“
CCAD is the heart and soul of our creative economy.
—Kenny McDonald President & CEO, Columbus Partnership DR. MELANIE CORN President Columbus College of Art & DesignDear Friends,
Welcome to the President’s Report, our annual publication sharing information from the previous academic year alongside plans for the future. Traditionally, we share the President’s Report with existing constituents. You may be an alum or CCAD supporter retrieving this publication from your mailbox. If you’re an old friend, we’re endlessly grateful for your support and passion for CCAD. Alternatively, you may be just learning what CCAD stands for and reading this report for the first time. We’re sharing this report broadly with the central Ohio community because we’ve set ourselves on the intentional path to foster more equitable and prosperous communities through the power of art and design.
Last year marked our first year implementing The CCAD Way, our new Strategic Plan focused on Creative Collaboration, Intentional Inclusivity, and Proven Potential; we welcomed an enthusiastic rise in demand for our Youth & Community Learning programming; and with support from both state and federal dollars, we created a new CCAD “front door”—a state-of-the-art welcome center at the corner of Broad Street and Cleveland Avenue that houses such departments as Admissions, Career Services, and Alumni Engagement, as well as provides high-tech teaching, meeting, and study spaces for faculty, staff, and students. We’re thrilled to welcome the community to the space this fall.
The past year also found the world in a divisive place. I’m proud of the way CCAD has consistently made space for a multiplicity of voices that query and challenge the status quo. CCAD is more than an institution. It’s our people. And our people are the creative changemakers we need right now. For our institution and the world.
We’re a college in pursuit of creating a transformational educational experience—one that propels growth in our region’s economy. Read on for stories celebrating where we’ve been, where we are, and where we’re headed next—and how we’re impacting culture and commerce in the process.
To old friends, I appreciate your partnership as we move forward together. To new friends, I’m thrilled to welcome you to the CCAD community.
Sincerely,
Dr. Melanie Corn President @melanie_corn JENI BRITTON Founder and Chief Creative Officer Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams @jeni | @jenisplendidYou have in your hands what I like to call a snapshot of where Columbus College of Art & Design is at this moment in time and where it is headed. I have the privilege of serving as chair of CCAD’s Board of Trustees, and I relish having a front row seat to witness the power and impact of so many creative minds working together.
As I reflect on the past year, it brings me joy to think of the faces I saw flock to CCAD to enjoy the many community experiences the college has to offer. I myself was one of those faces years ago, attending Saturday Morning Art Classes as a teenager. But CCAD isn’t just for college students. It’s a cultural hub for anyone seeking inspiration or following a passion. If you are looking for a healthy dose of creativity, I’d encourage you to pay CCAD a visit. Take a class—CCAD’s beloved Saturday Morning Art Classes for adults and kids range from digital design to painting to jewelry making. Expand your skills—CCAD offers workshops and bootcamps on everything from UX to financial literacy, designed to help you update your skills or shift your career path. Or simply explore the art on view—CCAD’s Beeler Gallery is free and open to the public, and hosts multiple curated exhibitions a year featuring regional and worldrenowned artists.
As I look forward, I can’t help but think about how critical creative thinkers are for this particular time of social unrest. It takes artists and visionaries to say, do, and stand for the things other people won’t. I’m proud to be part of an organization that is shaping and supporting those types of trailblazing people every day. CCAD is doing something special: training the next generation of heartfelt connectors, truth tellers, empaths, and healers. The people who see beyond the veils of our society. We all know that Columbus, our state, and our country need these types of people to grapple with the urgent challenges of today.
Our city is the thriving hub of culture and commerce that it is because of generations of CCAD artists, designers, and entrepreneurs. I’m grateful to continue to support the college and the next generation of creative thinkers.

THE CCAD WAY
CCAD moved forward with intention last year to further the goals and objectives of the college’s 2021–2026 Strategic Plan, The CCAD Way. Here are just a few highlights; you can read the full plan at ccad.edu/strategicplan
AMPLIFY EDUCATIONAL OFFERINGS
We launched our innovative Master of Professional Studies in Retail Design program in January 2022. This first-of-itskind degree offers a curriculum developed and taught by retail experts and brings working professionals from across the sector together to learn design strategies necessary to lead the retail revolution.
EMPOWER STUDENTS
CCAD achieved a first-time-freshman retention rate of 82%, the college’s highest retention rate in over five years. We continue to build academic and student support systems that empower students to thrive at CCAD and beyond.
Embedded in the Strategic Plan—across multiple objectives—is a focus on ensuring CCAD continually acts to become a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive institution. To that end, in the 2021–2022 academic year, 100% of new full-time faculty hires were people of color; we awarded several new diversity impact scholarships for the first time; we launched our Bias Incident Response Team; we implemented new faculty training on equity-based pedagogies and practices; and we participated in a national DEI climate survey that will be used to assess further areas of opportunity.
PARTNERING FOR A CREATIVE FUTURE
When sharp students, innovative faculty, and forward-thinking organizations come together, great things happen. CCAD’s Corporate & Community Partnerships create outstanding collaborative learning opportunities that provide students with professional-level experiences. The community benefits too.
Last year alone, our students contributed over 21,000 hours of creative work to the economy. Leveraging $1.5M in federal community project funds, CCAD created a state-of-the-art space as a hub for connecting the business and nonprofit community with CCAD’s creative minds. The space opened earlier this fall.
CCAD students graduate with skills valuable to the workforce. In addition to art galleries and design studios, our grads can be found working at leading healthcare, retail, consumer, and financial companies.
In fact, 79% of Columbus Partnership organizations (a collection of leading businesses and institutions in Columbus) employ CCAD alumni.
*Based on a 2021 survey of the number of CCAD alumni working at Columbus Partnership employers.
HAVE YOU MET OUR FRIEND SMOKEY BEAR?
After many months of development and multiple trips to the forest, 18 CCAD students majoring in Animation, Comics & Narrative Practice, Game Art & Design, and Illustration launched Smokey’s Scouts, a forest-friendly mobile game. Developed in partnership with the Mid-Atlantic Interstate Forest Fire Protection Compact and USDA Forest Service, CCAD students had the historic opportunity to reimagine the beloved character Smokey Bear in his first-ever mobile game.

Last year, we:
• Increased enrollment in our Saturday Morning Art Classes, Creative Summer Workshops, and College Preview preparatory program
• Expanded youth and adult programming, including art for social change classes for youth and digital photography and graphic design classes for adults
• Created a partnership with Columbus City Schools that brought Art & Technology classes to CCS students to help bridge summer and fall learning
• Began new Professional Studies courses based on community and alumni feedback, designed to help professionals update skills, start a business, or shift career paths
• Welcomed the first Masters of Professional Studies in Retail Design cohort, guided by an advisory board of industry leaders at some of the country’s top retailers
Thousands of central Ohio community members took part in a CCAD class last year. Thinking about trying one yourself? Read on below to see what students and parents said about our classes.

“When it became clear that my daughter had a passion for art, I began taking her to the CCAD Saturday Morning Art Classes. Those classes set my daughter on her path as an artist and museum director.
Carrie Lacey Boerio, parent of a Saturday Morning Art Class Participant
“I have never been surrounded by so many people who understood me. Going into the program, I wasn’t sure what to expect but by the end of the first day I already had friends and memories that’ll stay with me for the rest of my life.
Participant in College Preview preparatory classes
“I stumbled upon this [course] looking for any extra art classes that could be taken and was very thrilled with how helpful this course was. It makes me wish I had consulted a CPA a long time ago.
Participant in Professional Studies’ Tax Literacy for Artists & Freelancers
“What I’ve learned in CCAD’s MPS program has directly impacted new projects, allowing me to challenge myself and my team to think differently.

ADVANCING A CULTURE OF HEALTHY CREATIVITY
CCAD is a diverse community of talented artists and designers, and a place where learning extends far beyond the classroom and studio. Last year, students built connections, explored the city, and discovered ways to thrive in a place that values both creative excellence and personal wellness.
CONNECTING WITH ALUMNI
Keturah Bobo (Fine Arts, 2006) appeared on season three of Hulu’s Black History Month series Your Attention Please, where she spoke about her artwork, which celebrates and uplifts the stories of underrepresented groups, particularly those of Black children.
Nick Burkard (Media Studies Time-Based, 2007) and Ryan Green (Media Studies Time-Based, 2003) both worked on Disney Studios’ Encanto (Burkard as Head of Technical Animation and Green as a Story Artist), which took home the 2022 Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
Brian Matyas (Illustration, 2007) received critical acclaim for his work as Senior Character and Costume Concept Designer at Lucasfilm, where he develops character designs for the hit TV show The Mandalorian, part of the Star Wars universe airing on Disney+.
Cameron Granger (Cinematic Arts, 2016) landed on the Forbes 2021 “30 under 30” list while being recognized for his work, including being selected as an artist-in-residence at the renowned Studio Museum in Harlem Artists in Residence program, curating a short film program at the internationally acclaimed Wexner Center for the Arts.
Proven Potential: CCAD alumni recognized for their vision and impactCCAD’s Alumni Office strives to deepen the connection between alumni and the college through programs, services, and special opportunities designed specifically for CCAD graduates.
Last year, we focused on fostering meaningful relationships through our Alumni Mentoring Program, which connects students with alumni for guidance in skill development that is needed for successful careers. Program participation grew by 53%, with participation from alumni located around the world and spanning five decades of graduating classes.
“Not only did [my mentor] help me with my senior thesis project this year, but she also offered me a job to work with her in store design and construction!
—Madison Dawson, student mentee (Interior Architecture & Design, 2022)
“I was extraordinarily grateful to get the chance to learn from an alum who imparted to me lessons of humility, determination, and teamwork. I’ve heard a lot of stories about the industry, but getting to have regular one-onone interactions with a professional made the information feel more tailor-made for me.
—Connor Rosciszewski, student mentee (Animation, 2024)
“It really gives an opportunity to foster learning for both participants, and possibly build towards a future where both mentor and mentee could become peers. You care for your mentees and want them to thrive, and their successes and struggles become personal to you. It is fascinating and wonderful to see the world through the eyes of a new generation and to share that moment when discovery or realization happens.
—Jeff Carlisle, alumni mentor, freelance concept artist and illustrator (Illustration, 1997)
From equipping young artists with the supplies they need to creating a healthy and diverse campus environment, here’s a sample of funding CCAD secured last year to support students of all ages in unleashing their creative potential.
SUPPORTING STUDENTS
$230,000 TO SUPPORT DEI SCHOLARSHIPS
At CCAD, we are committed to fostering an environment of inclusion and equity. DE&I scholarships provide support to students from historically underrepresented and marginalized backgrounds who will strengthen the CCAD community through a diversity of experiences and creative practices.
$120,000 TO SUPPORT YOUTH EDUCATION PROGRAMMING
An interest in art and design takes shape at a young age. Funds for youth education programming support scholarships that expand access to CCAD class offerings and ensure program participants have access to state-of-the-art supplies.
Successful artists and designers need more than technical skills and conceptual prowess; they need balance and a sense of wellness. Funds for mental health services support our Counseling and Wellness Center, along with programming and tools to help students mentally and physically thrive.

PIONEERING WOMEN DRIVE CCAD FORWARD
CCAD’s origins can be traced back to a group of women who harnessed their passion for art and education to found the Columbus Art School in 1879. And though much has changed in the 140-plus years since CCAD began, the college has once again seen landmark support from women in the Columbus community.
Last fiscal year, CCAD received two of the largest financial gifts in its history from two generous supporters: longtime philanthropist Loann Crane, and entrepreneur and business owner Alexis Jacobs. These two historic gifts will support transformational educational experiences that propel growth in our region’s economy. CCAD is incredibly grateful for their legacy and philanthropic investments.
