What drew you to family medicine? I wanted to do everything! I didn’t want to limit myself to one system of the body, so I chose family medicine because it allowed me to do something different every day.

What is the most rewarding part of your job? I’ve had patients begin to weep in gratitude, just telling me how thankful they are to have felt seen and heard. Some have had concerns that others had dismissed. In those cases, I just listen, order tests and reassure our patients that we will do our best to try to figure out what was happening, while reminding them that we did not create the body, so sometimes the result is a lot of things that are not the problem but not a definitive answer as to what the problem is. That is the most rewarding part of my job. Connecting with patients and helping to give patients dignity, while hoping to educate and provide a level of understanding so that the patient is engaged and empowered to find their best health.

How has the COVID-19 pandemic altered your practice? The pandemic has high lighted how desperately we need to prioritize making a difference in a patient’s life and how important connection to one another is to our self-care and our mental health. I have intentionally slowed down with patients whom I see need that human connection and are suffering from the isolation that COVID-19

How has critical care medicine changed since you started practicing? There have been important advances in technology, such as the widespread availability of bedside ultrasound as a diagnostic tool. At the same time, we have had better recognition of the limits of technology and have adopted a more conservative approach to many of our more invasive procedures, realizing in some cases “less is more.” However, I think the most important advance is the develop ment of the team approach to the patient care. Now, rounds are multidisci plinary with nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, dietitians and social workers all contributing to the daily plan of care for the patients.

What would you have been if you had not become a doctor? One of the aspects of my job at Ohio State that I enjoy the most is teaching. So if I were not a doctor, I may have been a high school teacher. Alternatively, one of my passions outside of work is tennis. I played college tennis, and during medical school, I had a part-time job as a tennis instructor. So I also might have been have become a club tennis pro.

What has been the proudest moment of your career? I’ve been fortunate to have many great moments in my career, but being able to participate in my son’s “white coat” ceremony as he entered medical school at Ohio State stands out. My father, a Filipino immigrant, came to this country in the 1950s shortly after graduating from medical school. He came here, on his own, to complete his residency and eventually embarked on a career in general surgery. I was very

How has the COVID-19 pandemic altered your practice? We did telemedicine for a few months, but patients needed to be seen in the office, as we perform injection treatments on a regular basis on most of our patients. This includes therapeutic Botox and nerve blocks.

What are some of the best ways to prevent headaches? This is a complicated an swer. It is important to track headaches on a calendar, as they may be treated differently depending on the frequency. Migraines are genetic in origin, and increased frequency occurs because of hormonal changes, stress/anxiety, neck problems, teeth-grinding and sleep problems, to name a few of the most com mon triggers.

What’s different about your field, neurology, than other specialties?  A neurologist treats many chronic conditions that can be present for a patient’s entire life. These include progressive conditions such as Parkinson’s and dementia and nonprogres sive conditions like migraines and dystonia. In either type of illness, we may treat a patient for many years, which allows us to get to know the patient and their family well.

Do you recall a particularly gratifying case—and what made it gratifying?  I can tell you about the most gratifying condition to treat. I am an expert in the treatment of dystonia with botulinum toxin (Botox). Dystonia is a condition of twisting and turning muscles, which can cause muscle pain, pulling, spasms and trem ors.
