Inspiring news for and about central Ohio parents! Got an inspiring tip for our next issue? Send it to jmantey@gmail.com with Parent Pulse in the subject line. Local designer (and dad) Christopher Mead created an iOS app great for children interested in color. Color Lab costs 99 cents to download and uses interactive educational elements and fun illustrations to teach the names and distinctions of 40 unique colors, such as chartreuse and cobalt. Find out more about the game at jellybeez.com/app/color-lab. The ever-growing Grandview Yard, a development on the eastern end of
the neighborhood on Third Avenue, recently welcomed a new tenant, Giant Eagle Market District. The grocery store chain’s Market Districts are renowned for their elevated shopping experience and organic meats and produce selections. The Grandview Yard location has a feature busy parents can take advantage of. The 93,000-square-foot space houses a sizzling wok station where families can grab healthy stir fry dishes to go.
Or, have the kids order a pizza at the in-store restaurant as you stock up on groceries. The Columbus Museum of Art opens its popular annual LEGO show this month (Nov. 21-Jan. 18). Artworks in myriad media inspired by or made from the famous toy will thrill kids and adults alike. If you’re looking for a show that’s a little more thought-provoking, try the OSU Urban Arts Space’s “25 On High: A Photographic Journey,” up through Nov. 8. The exhibit features photogra-
phy by 25 local artists who spent one year on Columbus’ main vein, High Street, photographing the people who make up this diverse community. If you have your own budding artist in the mix, look into Shadowbox Live’s new Play Cafe program. The Sunday, two-hourlong classes offer theater instruction for kids age 6 to 11 and put on a show based on a classic fairy tale. Sign up ahead of time online and the price is $5-$10 per session.

columbusparent.com | November 2014
As peanut butter and jelly is a staple of a young person’s diet, so should jazz music be a part of their regular cultural consumption. Awkward lesson-metaphor aside, the Jazz Arts Group of Columbus’ PBJ & Jazz concerts for children aren’t just good for you, they’re just plain fun. The hour-long concerts are interactive and designed to introduce young audiences to jazz and live music. On Saturday, Nov. 15, Latin jazz band Rachel Sepulveda & Ritmo Ondas will perform at 10:30 and 11 a.m. at the Lincoln Theatre.

every continent — the mother of “multiculturalism.” With every group she honored the languages spoken by participants — audiences learned how to say “I love you” in every language represented. She merrily played her harmonica, strummed her ukulele, shook her maracas and invited children and adults to join her on stages across the land. It’s been my joy and privilege to know Ella for almost 50 years and to share with her the joys of music with children and teachers. She is always Ella — warm, fun, kind, respectful, open to and interested in all who meet her. She is a role model sorely needed in this world today. The world she wishes for our children is one in which diverse cultures and peoples are bound together by music, song, dance, stories — the sacred connections that help us learn to live side by side in harmony. Happy birthday, Ella Jenkins! We thank you! We love YOU!

She’s the “First Lady of Children’s Song.” She’s known by children and families throughout the world. The Smithsonian now has gathered her 30+ albums of children’s songs. She has been the recipient of countless honors, too numerous to list in one column. In this high-tech world of ours, it’s easy to Google up information on Ella Jenkins and I hope you do. She is a national and world treasure! And Ella Jenkins turned 90 years old earlier this year. Ella was born in St. Louis, Mo., but raised mostly on the South Side of Chicago in a family and neighborhoods blessed with music in the air — chants, gospel, blues, jazz, the rhythms of the street, of children’s games and songs, the variety of instruments and voices. Ella was a pioneer. She honored the singing games of her childhood memories and shared them with children in community centers and schools. Miss Mary Mack, one beloved example, is known throughout the country. She invited children to the delightful experience of “call and response” songs, where they were charmed by the words and fun. Her I’ll Sing a Song and You Sing a Song became one of the most sung songs by children and teachers around the world. Her heart was/is open to the music of peoples from every country. She shared songs with children from

Budding Bookworms By Joel Oliphint
We have two readers in the house now. Other than being more careful about the Post-it notes I leave around the house and the two sets of eyes peering over my shoulder at text messages, it’s a great thing. Our first-grader, Liam, is now reading chapter books like the Magic Tree House series and a graphic-novel series called Super Dinosaur. If he’s not sleepy when we put him to bed, he wears a headlamp and reads under the covers. If he wakes up before the clock strikes 7 (any attempts to engage with Daddy before that are unwise and highly discouraged), Liam often finds a nearby book to pass the time. “I think I’m becoming a book-
worm,” he said recently as his parents and librarian grandma burst with pride. I’d forgotten what a milestone and a thrill it is to become a proficient reader. Watching my children has reminded me of running errands with my mom and reading billboards aloud just because I could. Everything was starting to make sense. Still, the true significance of this new skill doesn’t completely sink in as a child. I remember feeling like Sesame Street was always going overboard in its claim that reading was magic and that books could take you anywhere. (The show also had me convinced that littering was the most heinous crime you could commit — not a bad scare tactic,
in retrospect.) But now, watching my own kids, it truly does feel magical — like someone gave my kids a decoder ring, and now all these squiggly symbols that were previously a jumbled, incoherent mess have been reassembled into tidy, revealing messages about our world. Even when they get those messages wrong, it’s still awesome. As a kindergartner, Liam spotted the sign for “John Eagle Candies” and emphatically proclaimed, “John! Igloo! Kansas!” When they get it right, further explanation is often needed to fully grasp the meaning. My kids have always been curious, but now that they can read, it has only opened the door to more
questions — this time with a specificity that tends to expose my own ignorance about things I thought I understood but, when prodded, do not. A recent conversation in the car: “Is ‘KFC’ a restaurant?” “Yeah. It stands for Kentucky Fried Chicken.” “Why is there a picture of an old man on the sign?” “That’s Colonel Sanders. He … started KFC. I think.” “Why do they call him ‘colonel?’” “Probably because he was in the Army at some point.” “Is he still alive?” “No.” “Did he die in a war?” “I don’t think so.” “When did he die?” “I have no idea, Liam. A long time ago probably.”
Joel Oliphint is a freelance writer who later became curious about Colonel Sanders’ life but found the “amateur obstetrician” descriptor in Sanders’ official bio a little disturbing.
“Like 100 years ago?” “No, like 50 years ago. Maybe. I don’t know. I really don’t know much about Colonel Sanders.”

Model an attitude of gratitude. Kids learn best by example, so let your children see and hear you model the type of attitude you’re trying to foster in them. eaching children gratitude may seem especially important at this time of year, when many families are preparing to celebrate Thanksgiving. A sense of gratitude, like most characteristics, can take time to develop. Sure, kids have an innate desire to be good to others but, every now and then, a sensibility of “the world is me” may surface. If you see this behavior, know that your child isn’t unusual. Here are a few simple ways to encourage appreciation and teach the power of gratitude.

“I AM MALALA: HOW ONE GIRL STOOD UP FOR EDUCATION AND CHANGED THE WORLD”
by Malala Yousafzai with Patricia McCormick In 2012, the Taliban attempted to assassinate Malala Yousafzai for repeatedly speaking out about a female’s right to be educated. The young girl survived, fought back and along the way earned the honor of being the youngest person ever nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Her memoir easily blends a seemingly normal childhood spent fighting with her little brother, watching Ugly Betty reruns and obsessing about good grades with her courageous efforts to stand up for children’s rights within the political and social upheaval of Pakistan. An inspiring and fast-paced read that will resonate for a lifetime.

Coding is the new literacy! Scratch, a programming language developed at MIT, bills itself as a creative learning community where kids can learn to program while connecting and sharing projects with each other. Scratch works by snapping together graphical programming blocks, allowing users to create their own interactive stories and games. An absolutely essential skill for the 21st century, coding requires creativity, problem solving and the ability to work collaboratively. The desktop version (scratch.mit. edu) is supported for Mac, Windows and Linux and has more than 6 million projects that have been shared. It is geared for ages 8-16. The Scratch Jr. app, released this summer for iPad for ages 5-7, has been simplified for younger learners. Both the desktop and mobile versions are currently available for free, but please consider making a donation to the Code-to-Learn Foundation (codetolearn.org) in return. —Christy Meister

When parents and kids share pop-culture passions By Joel Oliphint
was the year 2000, just after Lego began releasing Star Wars-themed sets. Visual artist and designer Clinton Reno was still a kid-less bachelor, but the nostalgic pull of Lego and Star Wars was irresistible, so he bought and assembled several sets. After marrying and
moving, Reno boxed up the bricks and jettisoned them to the attic, where they collected dust for years. Two years ago Reno’s oldest son, Wyatt, then 4, began showing an interest in Legos, so Reno dug out the Star Wars sets and thus began the sharing of a Lego passion that shows no signs of waning. “Now he has way more than I ever did,” Reno said. “There are
times when, for my birthday or Father’s Day, he’ll get me sets so we can put them together.” Kids are always looking for ways to fit in, said Kevin Arnold, a psychologist and director of the Center for Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy in Columbus. One way they do that is to model behavior, particularly from someone they identify with, such as a parent. Sharing a pop-culture interest is a natural way for children to connect with their parents, and vice versa.

“From the parent’s perspective, it’s bonding and, from the kid’s perspective, it’s attachment,” Arnold said. “The content is really like a stage on which the attachment process — you could call it love — plays out. It rekindles the parent’s old emotions and sense of excitement and then the kid identifies with that, and it feeds their sense of being connected to the parent in addition to being excited about the material itself.” Wyatt’s explanation for why he enjoys building Lego sets with his dad is simple. “I just like playing up there with him,” he said, sitting in the downstairs living room of his family’s Harrison West home. “We’ve got a big table [upstairs],” Reno said. “We’ll just be up there — not necessarily building the same things, but we’re up there playing Legos together. … I think at the heart of it, I enjoy being not much of an adult.” “It’s important to remember a kid can’t be like a grown-up, but the grown-up can go back and behave in ways they did as a kid,” Arnold said. “It forms a real possibility for the kid and the parent to connect.” Once kids reach a certain age, television is another natural way for them to co-opt a parent’s interest. Wendy Weyer, who recently moved from Clintonville, remembered watching reruns of Dr. Who with her father in the late ’70s: “We would watch with him just to spend time together. I think that’s

So French and Noah’s mom, Kitty McConnell, grabbed a camera and took Noah to Highbanks Metro Park, where they found an area devoid of passersby near the creek. Noah, decked out in camo fatigues, played Arnold’s role, and French put on a Predator-like mask as they tromped through the woods. The resulting footage, which French intercut with scenes from the actual movie to make Noah vs. Predator, is priceless (check it out using the link on our website, ColumbusParent.com).

French and Noah, now 12, have also used figurines to make stop-action movies. But for Predator, French had a better idea: “Let’s go make our own movie,” he said.

Ben French’s stepson, Noah, went through an Arnold Schwarzenegger phase, which led to an obsession with the 1987 cult classic Predator. When he was 8, Noah dressed as the Predator for Halloween, and French scoured eBay to find action figures from the ’80s. “He would claim to see Predator while we were camping,” French said.

MORE FAMILIES’ SHARED PASSIONS
“Well, I have no idea what this is, but it looks like I’ve seen it before,” Noah said in the home movie, scanning the woods dramatically. “Looks like these things are dang tough.” Colin Weyer and his mom, Wendy
episodes through Netflix on his iPad. Now Colin is the one educating Mom about Dr. Who. He has a Dr. Whothemed shirt and other fan paraphernalia with phrases such as “Don’t blink” — something only self-described “Whovians” would understand. Recently, Weyer and Colin found a new show to obsess over together: Lost. Weyer has already watched the series, but Colin is just now diving in. They often make popcorn together before settling in to watch. For an 11-year-old, Lost can get pretty intense and that intensity, Arnold said, “provides a connection point to the notion of providing safety and trust — that nothing bad is going to happen. You can talk about how it’s not real.” “What I like about watching Lost with my mom is I just feel comfortable and safe,” Colin said.
Music is a constant in the home of Colin Gawel, singer and guitarist in longtime local rock band Watershed. When his son Owen was 3, Gawel was watching The Kids are Alright, a rock documentary about The Who and, at one point, he left the room. When he came back in, Owen was smashing his toy guitar on the ground a la Pete Townshend. Now a fifth-grader, Owen is old enough to jam with his dad on drums and guitar, and they go to concerts together a few times a year. The most memorable show happened two years ago when Owen was 8. Through a friend of a friend and some genial crew members, Gawel and Owen got to go backstage at a Cheap Trick/Aerosmith show. They met Cheap Trick guitarist Rick Nielsen and watched Aerosmith perform from the side of the stage.
Owen Gawel
“One day, when you’re really mad at me,” Gawel told Owen, “I want you to remember this night.” For Owen’s end-of-the-year project to close out fourth grade, he put together a huge poster-board display explaining the British invasion. “He really knows it. He knows how music works,” Gawel said. “He knows how Chuck Berry influenced the Beatles, how Kiss liked the Beatles. He’s putting it together.”

part of the reason I like that genre. For me, it was a natural thing to experience it with my kids.” Dr. Who became a multigenerational interest about two years ago when Weyer’s oldest son, Colin, then 9, sidled up next to his mom as she watched an episode of the revamped BBC series about a time-traveling humanoid alien from the planet Gallifrey. “I thought it was interesting,” Colin said. “It’s awesome to see people taking reality and making it fiction. Like, if you were walking around in public, you see a police call box, but you would just think it’s a call box. But in Dr. Who reality, it’s the time machine.” For a while it was a weekly tradition for Weyer and Colin to DVR the episodes and watch together but, after the Weyers cut the cable cord, Colin jumped ahead of his mom, watching

Children can measure ingredients, pull ingredients from cupboards and be engaged in conversation about substitutions they can use. If you’re hosting, talk to your guests ahead of time to develop a plan if any special dietary needs are to be met. If your family is a guest, let the host know about glutenfree necessities, and consider bringing your own gluten-free dishes. Prepare glutenfree dishes first, and serve them in separate areas with their own utensils in order to prevent cross-contamination.

Living with Gluten Sensitivity
22
While parents are looking out for their gluten-free kids, they can teach their kids to look out for themselves, too. Kids with gluten sensitivity should:
Speak up: Encourage your child to ask people about gluten-free options at school, restaurants and friends’ houses. Make sure they know to be vocal about their important dietary needs. Read labels: Teach your child to closely examine labels on all foods, drinks and snacks. By knowing what ingredients to look for, they become more familiar with what is and isn’t safe. Educate: Tell your child to share their knowledge about gluten-free foods with their friends. Your child can help make sure their friends’ families know what foods they can and cannot eat when they visit.

received a painted flowerpot with a Styrofoam ball on top filled with 50 Dum Dum suckers. “It was one of my favorite gifts all year,” Walsh said. “My own children couldn’t wait to get their hands on it. The little girl had worked so hard on it, and I still have it in my kitchen.” If you aren’t the crafty type, never underestimate the value of a gift card, especially for busy teachers who have their own children at home. More and more parents opt for gift cards, “and I have to be honest that I do miss the occasional child-made gift or Christmas ornament. These are always heartwarming and make tree decorating a little more special,” said Dee Knight, a teacher at Burbank Early Childhood School in Upper Arlington. But “as a busy mother of two,” she said, “gift cards that can be used for the entire family are always nice.” When it comes to gifts, whether for a teacher or family member, it really is the thought that counts because, when it comes down to it, what we all want is someone to tell or show us they appreciate the hard work we do every day.

your teacher loves that — and opt for thoughtful homemade personal cards and gifts or gift cards. They’re on most teachers’ wish lists. “One year, our classroom moms got together and collected money for a class gift. It was such a generous gift of gift cards, jewelry, a scarf and even some cash, too. They also had each student make a picture for us which they collected and made into a booklet. This booklet is what I treasure. I know it might sound strange but I loved it even more than the gifts,” said Kristi Stumner, a teacher at BEARS Preschool in Upper Arlington. Ditto from Stumner’s teaching partner, Janice Walsh. “It’s the thoughtful gifts that mean the most,” she said. She has a special drawer where she keeps her “favorite cards I have received over the years. I do love the gift cards, but through the years I can’t tell you who gave me a gift card, but I remember every personalized gift and I treasure them.” And, if your teacher has children of her own, sometimes well-planned gifts can be a treat for the whole family. Vickie Guay probably received enough candles and “World’s Best Teacher” coffee mugs to fill the back of a pickup truck in her 30 years at St. Mary’s School in Lancaster. She certainly loves that her students’ parents thought about her every Christmas, but a few gifts stand out among all the rest. “My favorite gift ever was a basket filled with a variety of homemade cookies, because it meant I didn’t have to figure out when I could squeeze in the time to make my own cookies that year, and it was full of cookies I had never tried before,” said the now-retired first-grade teacher. One student even made a sign that said, “Mrs. Guay Rules!” “I had it up in my classroom for years,” she said. The holidays are right around the corner, and many parents long to show their children’s teachers how much we really appreciate them. The best way might not be what you expect. This year, skip the mugs and candles — unless you are 1,000 percent sure

he executive director of the Short North Alliance enjoys seeing strollers rolling through the streets of the historic arts neighborhood. Betsy Pandora considers it a sign of the area’s success as a destination. “We cater to diverse groups of people. The Short North is incredibly family-friendly,” Pandora said. “A lot of young families are moving into the neighborhood.” The district, which began its transformation in the 1980s with a few galleries amid bars and rundown buildings, has become a nationally recognized place to shop, dine and view art. The numerous galleries and public art displays offer a really “low-barrier way to expose kids to the arts,” Pandora said. Gallery owners in the area have come to expect that parents will bring their children with them on shopping excursions and during Gallery Hop, the monthly event when Short North businesses stay open late and galleries often schedule exhibit openings. Gallery Hop always occurs the first Saturday of the month. Anne Evans, whose two children attend school in the neighborhood, appreciates the murals and other public
art installations. “There’s a nice art vibe that comes across to all ages,” the Columbus resident said. For a more formal introduction to the arts, the Pizzuti Collection, one of the area’s newest galleries, offers a family tour at 11:30 a.m. Saturdays. Admission is $10 for adults. Students are free. “The tours are led by a staff person,” said Mark Zuzik, programs coordinator. “It’s all about looking, getting (kids) to slow down.” Tour guides encourage children to view the pieces from a variety of angles, even sitting or lying on floor to get the best view. They also provide youngsters with sketchbooks so they can draw or write their reactions to pieces, which are part of the personal collection of Columbus developer Ron Pizzuti and his wife, Ann. Art is only a part of the Short North experience, Pandora said. Kids will enjoy many of the shops. Big Fun carries vintage toys, collectibles and goofy gag gifts. Utrecht Art Supplies is not only a great place to feed your inner artist, but the store stocks a collection of small, inexpensive toys that would make great stocking stuffers.
from left: Pizzuti Collection; Goodale Park pond and playground; Short North sidewalk scene. Bink Davies sells a wide array of items from silly socks and bacon candy to cuddly stuffed animals and interesting hostess gifts. Global Gifts more than lives up to its name. The shop has home goods, jewelry and toys from more than 40 countries. The store only carries fair-trade goods, meaning all of the artisans are paid a fair wage for their products. Tigertree, known for its holiday window displays, sells books, puzzles and other fun kid items. Kingmakers, the game parlor that opened earlier this year, is another unique destination. Visitors pay a $5 fee to play any of the parlor’s more than 400 board games. Staff members help visitors select a game and get started playing it. During the afternoon, the facility, which serves snacks and beverages (including wine and beer), is very kid-friendly. Another great family destination is Goodale Park, home to playground equipment and the famous elephants fountain. The fountain pays tribute to the Sells brothers, Columbus residents who started a traveling circus in the late 1800s. The brothers and many of the circus acts used to winter in Columbus. Eating is another important pastime
in the Short North. For healthy treats with an emphasis on organic ingredients and American food, try the Northstar Café. For comfort food with a twist, head to Melt Bar & Grilled, which specializes in grilled cheese sandwiches stuffed with everything from chorizo to berry preserves. Each member of the family can have the toppings of their choosing at zpizza, which sells pizza by the slice. Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams and Le Chocoholique have tempting treats that will expand a kid’s palette. For multiple dining options in one spot, visit the North Market, where you can nibble on flavored popcorn, freshbaked pretzels, pierogis, spring rolls and cheese. Home to a variety of ethnic eateries, foodie businesses and eclectic shops, the North Market makes a great outing. “It’s a unique place,” said Pam Tylka, owner of Pam’s Market Popcorn. Kids like to visit her store because of the rainbow-colored popcorn and the disco ball she decorates for various holidays. She loves that the market draws a mix of regulars and visitors. “I’ve watched kids grow up since they were babies in the tummies,” she said. “We’re all family.”

his was the year the Meloun family of Hilliard decided to trade in their traditional family trip to Disney for adventure travel. “The boys asked if we could do something more active,” said Stacy Meloun. Nine-year-old Keegan and 8-yearold Brendan were thinking big — really big! — and decided this year they would tackle real adventures such as whitewater rafting, rock climbing and caving. While apprehensive at first, Meloun and her husband, Grant, decided it was a doable idea for the family. They found Adventures on the Gorge (AOTG), an extreme-experience adventure company in Lansing, W.Va. AOTG caters to both adrenaline junkies who want to tackle Class VI rapids as well as families like the Melouns who want their adrenaline rushes served up incrementally. In the course of five days, the Meloun family packed in Timber Trek Aerial Adventure Park (a challenging, outdoor obstacle course), rafting on the familyfriendly Upper New River, hiking, paddle

boarding, kayaking, rock climbing, swimming and cave exploration. The adventures not only challenged everyone in the family, but Keegan and Brendan came home with newfound confidence and, frankly, bragging rights they earned the hard way. “The kids did stuff I wasn’t sure they would do. Keegan wasn’t sure about rafting,” said Meloun, referring to her trip in a two-person boat with her son. “Keegan didn’t even paddle at first. I paddled. Then he paddled a little and, by the end, he was the only one paddling.” Brendan earned his adventure stripes by stepping up to a challenge that would intimidate most adults: caving at the Lost World Caverns. He was the youngest AOTG participant to date (new age limits are now 10 and up) to navigate two miles of caves 250 feet below the ground with knee and elbow pads. Meloun admitted the tight crawlspaces and pitch-dark trek were challenging even for her. But the real reward was hearing young Brendan emerge with an exuberant, “I can’t believe I made it, Mom! I did it!”
When Stacy and Grant wanted to try a more extreme adventure on the TreeTops Canopy zipline tour (ages 10 and up only), the boys tackled their own adventures at Kids Camp, where they learned how to read a compass and enjoy kid-friendly activities. “It (Kids Camp) was a great option for things that we can’t all do if the kids are too young,” said Meloun. “It was nice for Grant and I to do something together.” Adventures on the Gorge is a company made up of the top four rafting and adventure outfits in the region that merged into one company, and it offers dozens of activities ranging from a bridge walk (851 feet above the New River) to ATV tours to horseback tours, hiking and even paintball. The company is not alone in expanding its outdoor-adventure options. Many companies now include experiences that suit varied age ranges so the whole family can enjoy outdoor adventures together. In a 2014 Industry Snapshot report by the Adventure Travel Trade Association, 17 percent of adventure travel tour opera-
tors around the world say their customers now travel in family groups. This kind of adventurous family vacation is valuable far beyond the cool photos and bragging rights of tackling rapids together. “Bonding with the outdoors is important because these experiences have purpose and create character,” said Dave Arnold, vice president of Adventures on the Gorge. “Every day, as families are on the river or engaged in obstacle courses, I see them share extraordinary personal and bonding moments.” This proved true for the Meloun family. “It was a great bonding experience for us,” said Meloun. “There was a sense of camaraderie. Those are the kinds of experiences we want the boys to have. It was by far our favorite vacation. There’s no comparison.”
