The New HONEYMOON
How couples are reimagining the traditionally exotic (and expensive) vacation
BY ASHLEY ALT
Honeymoons are a tradition as old as time. They’re a way to solidify and celebrate the excitement of a new marriage—the ultimate vacation to kick off a new life. From bumming on a coastal beach to exploring the history and architecture of European cities, the point is to experience this once-in-a-lifetime journey together.
While a honeymoon is indeed a classic way to mark the beginning of your marital union, the way honeymoons are being taken today look a bit different. With more couples paying for their own weddings (and getting smarter about their financials in general), the “less-ismore” mentality is being brought to the honeymoon sector.
Karima Crawford and Leah Hinderer of the Planning Bee have nearly a decade of experience customizing unique events for budget-conscious couples. In place of the big, elaborate honeymoon, they are seeing more couples embracing the idea of a mini-moon—a shorter, more financially attainable trip—saving their “honeymoon” for another milestone in their marriage, like their first or fifth wedding anniversary.
“Overall, honeymoons are not being done on a big, glamorous scale as they once were,” Crawford says. “The thinking behind this is that more couples today are spending a big chunk of their own money on the wedding that spending even more on a honeymoon simply isn’t reasonable.”
In addition to being more financially friendly, mini-moons are a more realistic option for the hustle and bustle lifestyle of young couples as they are focusing on their careers and working toward things like saving money and starting a family.
“I have one couple who is doing their honeymoon in Colorado so they can hike,” Crawford says. “It speaks to who they are as a couple and what they like
to do, which we are also seeing more of—couples finding ways to incorporate elements of themselves instead of just going on a honeymoon because they think that’s what they should be doing.”
Hinderer echoes this sentiment. “My suggestion is to not break the budget
when planning your honeymoon,” she says. “You think you’re going to do this amazing trip to Europe, but we are now seeing couples being quite conscious of their spending. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime moment, so acknowledging it in a way that’s comfortable for the couple is key.”
If a couple is leaning more toward a
The Planning Bee’s Leah Hinderer (left) and Karima Crawford (right) with couple Joey and Lexi Meyer on their May 13, 2023, wedding day
mini-moon, Crawford and Hinderer suggest such destinations as Gatlinburg, Tenessee; Saugatuck, Michigan; Chicago and New York City, to name a few. In recent years, they have noticed even smaller getaways—for instance, couples spending a few nights in the Hocking Hills in place of a five-night stay in Charleston, South Carolina, or Napa Valley, California.
Whether a couple is choosing a honeymoon destination or finding ways to keep their relationship strong, “staying true to what works for the couple” is the answer, Crawford says.
“Overall, honeymoons are not being done on a big, glamorous scale as they once were. The thinking behind this is that more couples today are spending a big chunk of their own money on the wedding that spending even more on a honeymoon simply isn’t reasonable.”
—Karima Crawford, the Planning Bee
“If they enjoy being active together, teaming up in a game of beach volleyball, taking a scenic hike or joining a bowling league are all excellent ways to spend their time,” Crawford says. “In the same vein, if a calmer, quieter environment is more their speed, taking road trips together, hosting game nights with their friends or going stargazing are ways to keep the couple’s connection strong.”
Hinderer agrees, saying it’s all about loving each other through the good and bad times. “Keep dating each other,” she advises. “When you become parents or you’re buying a house and your marriage becomes busier, you have to plan those dates. Make sure it’s something you do, and make sure you’re being forward-thinking with it.” Meaning, whether you need to get a babysitter or plan around work events, be intentional about making date night a priority.
Another thing that works, Hinderer says, is celebrating “those small wins,” like getting through your first real fight and celebrating new jobs. “Being each other’s cheerleader is a big one, too,” she says. “You’re telling your partner, ‘I’m always going to be here no matter what,’ whether it’s a job offer that falls through or something else.” «

Unique Wedding Mornings
Jennifer Kontomerkos of the Finer Things Event Planning discusses how pre-wedding routines are changing. Plus, she offers other event-planning tips.
BY ASHLEY ALT
Traditional wedding mornings, as of the last few decades anyway, have looked like this: The ladies get ready for umpteen hours with the bride in a bridal suite, perfecting their hair and makeup in a sea of Champagne and muffins, while the fellas get ready (which takes all of 10 minutes) with the groom in a separate space.
While the preparation part may not change much, especially for couples with large bridal parties, what is changing is the way couples spend their wedding mornings before the chaos of makeup and mimosas ensues.
“Here in Columbus, it’s very separate,” says Jennifer Kontomerkos of the Finer Things Event Planning. “Girls do their own thing and guys do their own thing. We’ve got amazing glam squads who can bang out beauty in three hours to allow bridal parties more time to do things like morning yoga together.”
If the ladies want to do morning beauty services (which is often the case), Kontomerkos makes sure they also have catering, something as simple as sandwiches and pastries from Fox in the Snow Café, for example, because food is something that is frequently overlooked in the getting-ready process.
For her groomsmen, she always schedules a brunch reservation. “It’s nonnegotiable so they’re not sitting around for hours on end,” Kontomerkos says. “It gives them something to do and allows them to go out and get some fresh air. Everyone needs to eat and be refreshed so they can be ready for the day ahead.”
Other activities she suggests for grooms and groomsmen are golf, basketball and spa treatments, often in the form of a straight-edge shave. “There are a lot of great barbers in the Downtown area,” Kontomerkos says. “It’s relaxing for the guys and, again, gives them something to do while they’re waiting for the day to start.”
Read on for a few more event-planning tips from Kontomerkos.
Wedding Weekends: Kontomerkos remarks there are lots of good things to
come from them. A multiple-day wedding can make the experience more special for guests who have traveled and taken off work to celebrate the occasion.
Welcome Parties: If you go the weekend-
long celebration route, welcome parties are often included, too. The night before the ceremony, guests are invited to have a couple of drinks to kick off festivities. “It’s great for a couple, too,” Kontomerkos says. “I think it takes the

pressure off the couple as well as the, ‘Oh my gosh, I didn’t get to talk to my cousin or best friend,’ feeling.”
After-Parties and Farewell Brunches: Both of these are coming back strong. And in some (especially fun) cases, afternoon pool parties. “There are so many benefits to these add-ons,” Kontomerkos says. “Parents love it. The moms love it, as they get to hang out with their girlfriends that they rarely see. It’s all about connection and what a well-planned experience can bring to your guests.”
Opposites Attract: Kontomerkos recommends contrasting your events, as well. For instance, host the welcome party at a brewery if the wedding is being held somewhere more formal, like the Columbus Museum of Art. This approach has a way of appealing to all guests—from the ones who expect a more traditional event to those who want to celebrate in a more relaxed style. “Honestly, breweries are great. Columbus natives are definitely going to lean into the breweries,” she notes, citing Seventh Son Brewing Co. as “a classic.”
She also recommends rooftop bars like Lincoln Social, the Terrace on the fourth floor of the Lincoln building, Lumin Skybar and the Junto as excellent choices for welcome parties. And for folks looking for a place with a nice skyline view closer to the ground, North Bank Park Pavilion is a good option. «

The Rise of Wedding Content Creators
Meet an up-and-coming wedding vendor you’re about to see more of.
BY ASHLEY ALT
A new figure is emerging in the wedding industry—the content creator. This iPhone-savvy individual captures behind-thescenes moments that photographers and videographers might miss, such as a laugh shared between the bride and a bridesmaid as they’re getting ready in the mirror or the groom or a father doing a silly dance when they think no one is watching.
Here in Columbus, one of those individuals is Dania Hamoui, who launched Wedding Days with Dania at the beginning of this year. It’s a new service to the Columbus market that “documents your wedding day as it organically unfolds.” This concept has already taken off in several major cities, but Hamoui couldn’t find anyone with an online presence who offered it in Columbus. Referring to herself as “the one in the friend group taking all of the candids anyway,” she decided to create the service herself. So far, she has 26 weddings booked this year, plus engagement sessions, bridal showers and even bookings for bachelorette parties.
Essentially, what wedding content creators do is capture the more informal moments of the day. “I’m getting the different points of view that a photographer isn’t, from short clips to still photos,” Hamoui says.
She clarifies that wedding content creators like herself are not out to replace photographers or videographers, but rather to collaborate with them, offering a different lens for the couple and a quick turnaround—perhaps the most appealing part of the service. “It’s more so video footage [than snapping photos],” Hamoui says. “Movement and sounds can really encapsulate a day, and most couples crave that instant gratification of wanting to see the highlights of their special day, which is why I give them footage within 24 hours. Being able to see it the next day is really special, and that instant gratification can’t be overlooked.”
Within 24 hours, she delivers an album of raw footage to couples, including 10 to 20 second bite-sized clips and a 60-second highlight video. These short videos, which are synced to the couple’s favorite songs, embody the moments that will touch the couple in ways that traditional photos can’t.
“The couple might be in their hotel room eating breakfast the morning after, and all they want to do is relive the night before,” Hamoui says. “Having these little keepsakes that they can look at whenever they want is so meaningful.” «
Remain present: Allowing you to fully unplug and “take it all in,” knowing every memory will be captured as the day naturally unfolds.
Three benefits a wedding content creator brings to the table: 1 2 3
Relive the entire day 24 hours later: While a photographer may need several weeks to deliver their magic, you get raw footage the very next day to appease that instant gratification bug.
Share the memories with family and friends: Whether the couple chooses to share the bite-sized clips and highlight reels on social media or with loved ones, they have little, timeless keepsakes to do so.
Content creators like Dania Hamoui supplement photographers and videographers with less formal footage and a quick turnaround.

Brianna + Ikesh Pack
BY MANDY SHUNNARAH PHOTOS BY MAGICAL MINUTES PHOTOGRAPHY
A couple of years after graduation, Brianna (Walstra) contacted her old high school classmate, Ikesh Pack, with a unique proposition. Bri was working for a nonprofit where people dressed up as characters to make children’s dreams come true. “I messaged him and was like, ‘Do you want to dress up as Black Panther for sick kids?’ ” the now-Mrs. Pack says.
Ikesh said yes, and it was more fun than he expected—even though one kid wanted to throw a punch because Ikesh’s Black Panther suit didn’t glow. That was the beginning of a new chapter of their friendship, one that eventually blossomed into falling in love.
Their transition from friendship to dating was so seamless that when asked about their first date, Ikesh laughs, “I wish I knew!” In lieu of an “official” first date, they decided on one later: the time they saw “Incredibles 2” at the drive-in. It was a fitting first date for a couple who bonded over superheroes.
Their transition from dating to getting engaged was just as smooth. “We were engaged before I even asked,” Ikesh says.
The couple had discussed getting engaged. Knowing how difficult it is to find vendors and venues in a timely manner (especially after the pandemic delayed many couples’ timelines), Bri proactively booked an engagement photo shoot—even before they were technically engaged.
When the couple arrived at their engagement photo shoot, Ikesh decided there’s no time like the present and dropped to one knee. “Our photographer was really confused,” Bri says with a laugh. Nonetheless, the engagement was perfect, and having the moment professionally captured was priceless.
Other priceless, personal details were incorporated into the Packs’ wedding day. “I made him cry like three times,” Bri says. “His grandpa had passed away earlier that year, so I had his grandfather’s ring resized and shined up [for him to wear]. Then I had a little picture of him and his grandpa to put inside of his tie, which he didn’t know, so I asked his groomsmen to point it out, and we got that on camera. Then we had rocking chairs for each person who had passed away that we wanted at the wedding.”
The couple chose a vintage travel theme for the big day and creatively integrated the theme into the wedding’s details. They furthered the theme by having a globe as a guest book and vintage luggage and cameras for décor, but most creative of all was letting
their wedding guests choose their honeymoon destination. “We asked our guests where they thought we should go, so they helped us decide our honeymoon,” Bri says. “Whatever had the most votes was where we were going.”
The couple set sail on a cruise to Greece, Italy, Turkey and several nearby islands this past summer, checking off a few of the many countries they hope to visit in a lifetime together. «

Kimberlin Trauthwein + Philip Jacob
BY MANDY SHUNNARAH
PHOTOS BY RACHEL RUTH PHOTOGRAPHY
For their first date, Kimberlin Trauthwein and Philip Jacob went on a day trip to Young’s Jersey Dairy in Yellow Springs. Phil proposed the idea, which Kim describes as “a bold move on his part” since you can’t easily leave if the chemistry isn’t there. Thankfully, that wasn’t an issue, and the experience gave Kim a chance to see Phil as a caring guy in action.
“At that point in my life, I wasn’t eating a lot of ice cream, so I got a little sick, and Phil had to buy me 7Up and Tums,” she says. “That was a big moment. Like, this guy is really great and has a nurturing spirit.”
When Phil was ready to propose, he meticulously planned everything. The couple would go on a trip to Acadia National Park in Maine, take a ride to the top of Cadillac Mountain, and he’d propose at sunrise. But you know what they say about the best-laid plans.
“Kim found the ring the week before I proposed,” Phil says.
“Because he hid it in camping supplies!” Kim laughs.
On the morning Phil planned to propose, his plans were foiled again—this time by the weather. It was too cloudy to see the sunrise he’d hoped for, but a few hours later, while hiking, the sun broke through the clouds and gave him the perfect moment.
The ring box was inscribed with a quote from their favorite movie, “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”: “I feel like sometimes I’m in my own little world, and you’re always next to me, and I don’t know how you do it, but you understand me.”
As brunch lovers, they decided to get married at 11 a.m. and have a brunch-style wedding, full of sweet and savory goodness, followed by a cocktail hour. Kim and Phil wanted their wedding day to be full of quality time with the people they love, so they built plenty of space into the reception for visiting with family and friends, then had a disco-themed after-party.
“Instead of doing the evening wedding, late-night party and hungover brunch, you get the brunch out of the way, then the party,” Phil laughs.
Although the order of the festivities was unconventional, it was perfect for them. “Everyone had great things to say,” Kim says. “They were like, ‘This feels like who you are as a couple,’ which is what you want.” «

Rachel + Kyle Sattler
BY MANDY SHUNNARAH
PHOTOS BY RED GALLERY PHOTOGRAPHY
First, she stole his fries Then she stole his heart.
In December 2017, Kyle Sattler just wanted to watch the Ohio State football game with his friends at the Eagle and have a bite to eat. The last thing he expected was Rachel (Feierman), then a stranger, to sit beside him and start chowing down on his fries.
“I thought, ‘What do I have to lose?’” Rachel, now Mrs. Sattler, says. “I needed somewhere to sit and got a free snack.”
Impressed by Rachel’s boldness and confidence, Kyle asked her on a date at the Grandview Café, where they’d have their engagement party years later. Beyond their affinity for crispy potatoes, they bonded over a love of Ohio State and learned they had several mutual friends.
Then, on the weekend of July 4, 2022, Kyle took Rachel out to dinner at their favorite neighborhood restaurant, Lindey’s, and Rachel suspected Kyle might have something—perhaps a ring box—up his sleeve. “Usually, he eats all his food and some of mine, too,” she laughs. “But he was really nervous at dinner and said he wasn’t hungry.”
They took a walk around German Village where, little did Rachel know, a photographer was waiting. With the cobblestone roads and street lamps as his backdrop, Kyle dropped to one knee.
A year and a half later, the Sattlers headed to their New Year’s Eve wedding, which they’d been dreaming of even before they got engaged. “When you’re around our age, it feels like you’re going to three weddings in four weekends in the summer, so we wanted to do something that was unique and that people would look forward to that wasn’t in the heart of wedding season,” Kyle says.
From their Fourth of July weekend engagement to their New Year’s Eve wedding, the Sattlers know how to create even more reasons to celebrate on a beloved holiday. And in true NYE fashion, guests were given Champagne before the ceremony, and the couple made sparks fly at their reception—literally.
As their band performed a custom rendition of “Nervous” by John Legend, which was the couple’s first dance song, everything came together to wow the attendees. “The band had coordinated with the company that did the cold sparks to have them go off at certain points in the song, like the chorus, which is where we planned to do dips. So every time we dipped, the fireworks went off!” Rachel says. It was a perfect choice for a chorus that includes the lines, ‘When your lips hit my lips and the fireworks fly / Sendin’ sparks through the air, like the Fourth of July.’”«

Callie + Keith Vojacek
BY ANDREW KING
Often, planning a wedding comes down to a tension between what’s expected or traditional, and what really reflects the couple. And for Callie (Orme) and Keith Vojacek, embracing their own favorite things resulted in a unique wedding day for all involved.
The pair’s engagement was classic. After they picked out a ring together, Keith locked it in a suitcase in the basement to hide it from Callie. But the two had a trip planned to Vienna, Austria, and Callie suspected the proposal was on its way.
She was certain he would pop the question during a romantic surprise picnic amid the gardens of Vienna, but he tricked her and kept her waiting. When they visited the Belvedere, a baroque palace that now houses an art museum, Keith got on one knee in front of the majestic fountains and asked Callie to marry him.
Back in Columbus, the couple was immediately inspired to move away from the idyllic setting of their engagement and emphasize their personalities. They wanted a Halloween wedding—costumes and all.
“It’s a big time of year for us,” Keith says. “We always dress up in multiple costumes. And I’d say it was almost a dream of Callie’s to have a Halloween wedding.”
They set their wedding date for Oct. 28, 2023, and sent out engagement photos that included the couple wearing the wild masks of Adam and Barbara from the comedy/horror film “Beetlejuice.”
The biggest decision left to be made was whether the couple themselves would dress up, or if a wedding dress and suit were costume enough. Ultimately, they decided there would be enough wacky costumes in the room.
“We went back and forth up until the day of, but we stayed in our dress and suit,” Keith says.
Until guests started to arrive, Callie and Keith worried whether the theme would truly be followed. Would people actually come in Halloween attire, or would they end up with a half-costumed, half-formal crowd? It didn’t take long for those fears to be assuaged.
“When we were waiting for people to arrive, we would kind of peek through the windows and see them decked out in outfits and go, ‘OK, yes, this is awesome,’” Callie says. “There were people in the parking lot wearing all sorts of crazy stuff. So that was very special to see.”
The evening was a massive success, and the theme brought people together more than anyone expected. “It got people talking to each other who didn’t know one another,” Callie says. “It was a really cool way to bring everybody together in this party atmosphere.”«

Taylor + Sterling Carter
BY ANDREW KING
PHOTOS BY LAVAR ELLIOTT PHOTOGRAPHY
From the first time Taylor (Guerrant) and Sterling Carter met, there’s been an air of kismet around their relationship. The pair matched on dating app Bumble on a Friday night, and before ever planning a get-together, they ran into each other the very next day at a TEDx event where Sterling was working as a videographer. Taylor didn’t even want to go and remembers not feeling well. But a friend dragged her along, and she was shocked to see Sterling there.
“It was kind of ‘in your face,’ ” Taylor says. “We just matched last night. How am I seeing you at this event today? Obviously, it couldn’t have been planned because he was working the event, so he had been contracted to do that for a while, but I wouldn’t have known that, and he sure wouldn’t have known that I bought tickets. It was a random one-off. It’s not like TEDx is happening every day.”
On their first actual date, the pair discovered that for months they had both been attending Life Transformation Church in Dublin without crossing paths.
Exactly four years after that fateful first meeting, Sterling planned an elaborate proposal. “I went crazy with it,” he says with a laugh.
His best friend, Jae Esquire, who would later serve as their wedding DJ, helped him set up a fancy dinner in an art space in Houston—Taylor’s hometown— complete with a compilation video and a hand-painted portrait of Taylor.
Immediately, the couple began the somewhat daunting task of planning a wedding that could accommodate their large guest list. On their fathers’ sides alone, the pair would have to contend with the fact that Taylor’s father was one of 13 children and Sterling’s was one of 11.
But they had another issue, one that disrupted many plans since 2020—Taylor was suffering from long COVID, and it had dramatically changed her relationship with food.
Taylor’s bout with the virus left her repulsed by the smell of cooked meat, which she says transformed into the smell of rotting eggs, meaning there couldn’t be meat prepared anywhere near the reception or ceremony. She considered an entirely vegetarian wedding but knew it wouldn’t thrill their carnivorous families. So they found a loophole: If the food was prepared outside where she couldn’t smell it, everything would be fine.
So she sent Sterling on “a really cool homework
assignment” to compile a list of food trucks that could work. Sterling turned it into a “playoff bracket of food trucks” that helped them narrow down their selections to Tacomania and Pizza Cottage.
The event was a huge success, and everyone involved felt that it reflected the couple’s personalities and relationship. And it set the stage perfectly for their next life milestone: a baby boy that arrived this past February. “It’s just been the biggest blessing, from the proposal to getting married and now bringing in a new life,” Sterling says. «

Connie + Spencer Barker
BY MADELINE FURASH
PHOTOS BY AZAR PHOTOGRAPHY
In August 2020, Connie (Andujar), a recent arrival to Columbus from Westchester, New York, matched with Bristolville, Ohio, native Spencer Barker on the Hinge dating app. Spencer made the first move, asking an important question: New York- or Chicago-style pizza? Connie, a lifelong New Yorker, enthusiastically defended her native style. This led to an in-person meeting at the Crest in Clintonville. Masked up and sitting on the patio, they kept talking until they realized the restaurant had closed around them.
Nearly two years later, on Sept. 1, 2022, Connie went on a “regular date” that Spencer organized—an extensive scavenger hunt across Columbus that mirrored their dating timeline, including a return to the Crest.
The hunt ended at the Drexel Theatre, where the marquee greeted them with a personal message in lights: “Connie Marry Me.” To continue Connie’s surprise, watching from around the corner was her family from New York, her best friend from Georgia and Spencer’s family from Northeast Ohio and Indiana.
While planning their wedding, the couple toured 22 venues in 30 days across the Columbus area to find the perfect location. Working with the “amazing owners” at the Beverly Mansion, who agreed to help make the couple’s vision come to life, Connie and Spencer planned an event that blended their Puerto Rican and Mexican cultures together.
Connie’s best friend’s father acted as their officiant, and the couple featured a live mariachi band, Mariachi Garibaldi, during their reception. White, sage and gold accent colors decorated the mansion, while their caterer, Metro Cuisine, incorporated traditional Puerto Rican and Mexican spices and dishes into their menu. A local Mexican baker, Mary Romero, provided a traditional tres leches cake.
The couple’s goldendoodle, Hudson, was a guest of honor. “One of my favorite photos was when my dog was there, with Spencer’s family and my family. It encompassed what the day was all about: bringing two families together as one,” Connie recalls.
Hudson was featured throughout the day, including having her own specialty “pup”-tail and her face on the drink stirrers. Connie coordinated with Furball Fitness to help handle Hudson’s logistics during the day.
“Since we had family coming from New York and California, we wanted to have the best party and wedding we could to show everyone a good time and emphasize our values: God and family,” Spencer says. «

Abigail + Robert Easterling
BY MADELINE FURASH
PHOTOS BY DERK’S WORKS PHOTOGRAPHY
Cleveland native Abigail (Magner) first encountered Robert Easterling during her freshman year of college when she visited Michelle, her best friend and future maid of honor, at Ohio State University. Robert happened to be Michelle’s floormate.
Several years later in 2018, Michelle decided to reintroduce the pair—Abigail in Lakewood near Cleveland and Robert in Toledo. She shared their phone numbers with them and encouraged them to connect. They did so and went on a first date in Lakewood, which included paddle boarding and dinner at a local arepa bar. The couple continued to date long distance between Toledo and Lakewood for the next year.
After a few years of dating, the couple moved to Columbus, when Abigail started to “drop some not-so subtle hints” for Robert. Robert, however, was determined to throw her off the scent of an upcoming proposal.
On Oct. 30, 2021, on a camper van trip to visit Utah’s national parks, Robert proposed at the top of a trail near their campsite. “I was so surprised. I had no idea that he bought a ring!” Abigail says. Robert says the proposal almost didn’t happen. “She kept trying to get us to turn around,” he says. She insisted that the trail wasn’t one of the ‘cooler’ trails and tried to get us back to our campsite.”
The couple hosted their wedding at the Ellis in Italian Village. The rustic venue offers an all-inclusive wedding package, including florals, catering, wedding cake and décor that allowed for a less stressful planning process.
“We picked the Ellis because they did everything for us, and we used every vendor that was recommended,” Abigail explains. Sage green florals and neutral pastels decorated the industrial venue to create a classic design. “We wanted something timeless—something that would still look good in 20 years,” she says.
Windi Noble of Run to an Elopement officiated the couple’s wedding ceremony. Before the ceremony commenced, Noble led the wedding party in practicing a “mindfulness minute,” providing a dedicated time for the couple to cherish the special moment. “We took a moment to be grateful for having all of our friends and family here with us,” Robert shares.
“It’s not every day that every friend and family member you love is in the same room. Taking the time to be grateful helped capture the extraordinary essence of the day.” «

Hien + William Eisenman
BY BRITT TIMMONS
A warm summer night at the Ohio State Fair is the perfect backdrop for a high school couple’s first date. This was the case for Hien (Ta) and William Eisenman—except with an unappetizing twist.
After indulging in fair food, the pair, who met while attending Bexley Middle School, decided to take a spin on the Ring of Fire ride, where William suddenly became ill. “It always comes back to this: How am I choosing the same guy who puked on me in high school?” Hien says, laughing.
Despite this rough start, the couple continued seeing each other until their young relationship was cut short just three months later, when William and his family moved to Colorado. Even though they broke up, the two remained friendly, texting each other every year on their birthdays. Then, in 2018, a decade after their high school romance, William invited Hien to a weekend getaway at a condo in Aspen with some of his friends. Hien accepted his invitation and flew out for a visit. Faceto-face, Hien and William couldn’t deny their rekindled connection, and they officially started dating again a couple months later. Eventually, William moved back to Ohio to be closer to Hien.
For months, William contemplated the perfect location to propose, but changed his plans at the last minute when Hien requested they have a French-themed picnic below a 20-foot replica of the Eiffel Tower that William’s aunt had recently installed in her backyard. As the couple enjoyed the unique view, along with some tasty pastries from Le Chatelaine French Bakery & Bistro, William’s aunt approached them asking if she could take a picture, giving William his cue to pop the question.
Though they both now live in Colorado, Hien and William wanted to host the wedding in Columbus and incorporate cultural traditions from their backgrounds. A rabbi officiated the wedding ceremony, which included Jewish customs such as a chuppah and stomping a glass.
A show-stopping moment during the reception included a wardrobe change into traditional Vietnamese wedding clothes that were custom-made for the couple in Vietnam. Family and friends gave a total of six speeches, including one in Vietnamese. And in a playful spin on tradition, William’s grandparents walked down the aisle as the “flower girl and boy.”
“We were able to intertwine those things and show respect to all the elders of the families,” William says of their unique customizations. «

Victoria + Curtis Conrad
BY BRITT TIMMONS
PHOTOS BY QUEEN ANNE’S LACE PHOTOGRAPHY
For Victoria (Pasini) and Curtis Conrad, a routine moment turned into the most romantic occasion. The couple, who lived in Schumacher Place at the time, had a Saturday morning ritual of grabbing coffee and tea at Stauf’s Coffee Roasters and then walking to Schiller Park. One such Saturday, Victoria noticed something seemed a little off. Curtis didn’t have an appetite, acted extra affectionately and kept lingering in various areas of the park. Despite Curtis’ “weirdness,” Victoria had no idea this weekly walk of theirs would end in a proposal.
Just as they were about to leave the park, Curtis got down on one knee, ring in hand, and asked Victoria to marry him. Walkers and joggers congratulated the couple as honking cars passed.
The two Columbus natives met while attending the University of Cincinnati. Victoria’s best friend was dating Curtis’ best friend, and the couple had been trying to get Victoria and Curtis together—though neither one was interested. Their paths later crossed at a beach-themed fraternity party in 2018. After they were introduced, Victoria dropped her phone in water, and Curtis tried to help her find some rice to dry it out. The couple connected instantly, chatting the night away, a characteristic of their relationship that hasn’t changed.
“We never were without a moment of conversation. There’s always something we could talk about,” Curtis recalls. “Yeah, we both can talk,” Victoria adds, laughing.
For their wedding, Curtis and Victoria wanted to create an intimate setting where guests could chat and mingle. The Revery at North 4th Corridor provided the perfect backdrop. Candles set a romantic ambiance, as did a perfectly timed sunset that began just as the ceremony started—a beautiful coincidence.
One personal touch that certainly was no accident: the handwritten letters Victoria and Curtis penned for each guest. The envelopes for the letters included each guest’s name and table number, complete with a custom wax seal. All the envelopes were displayed on a large, decorative board the couple made themselves.
“We wanted to personally touch everybody and let them know we were really happy that they were there and what it meant to us,” Victoria explains. “It was fun. That’s definitely my love language—cards and words of affirmation—so I really enjoyed it.” «

Lindsay + Michael O’Horo
BY CIERRA JOHNSON
DERK’S WORKS PHOTOGRAPHY
For Lindsay (Carmody) and Michael O’Horo, a chance encounter at an eighth-grade dance lesson was the first step in a love story that would span years and miles. “We both went to different Catholic schools here in the Columbus Diocese,” Lindsay says. “As a part of our eighth-grade tradition, in the Catholic schools, they bring three or four different schools together on Sunday evenings in the winter.”
The pair went on to attend separate high schools and colleges, but were reunited during the pandemic. “I lived in D.C. for about nine years,” Lindsay says. “Because of the pandemic, I was coming back to Columbus pretty frequently, so we connected on Hinge and went on three separate dates when I was home.”
Over those dates, Lindsay and Michael quickly got reacquainted, and Lindsay realized this was the perfect time to move back to Columbus, where their relationship continued to grow.
After two years together, Michael proposed with a nod to their Catholic school connection. “I work at St. Mary [in] German Village,” Michael says. “I told her the pastor got us a gift card to Lindey’s, which is our favorite restaurant.”
But first, they took a detour to Frank Fetch Park in German Village, where Lindsay’s brother was waiting to capture the proposal.
The couple says their wedding was much like their engagement—an opportunity to celebrate their love surrounded by those they love the most, with a bit of flair.
The ceremony was a traditional Catholic service held at the Mother of Mercy Chapel of the all-boys high school St. Charles Preparatory, yet another nod to the pair’s Catholic roots.
Lindsay and Michael say their approach to wedding planning was methodical, placing an emphasis on experience. They leaned on Courtney Heibel of Rooted Together and floral designer Regina Prange, owner of Natural Designs, to transform Post 4 at North 4th Corridor into their dreamy backdrop. As for music, they went with someone they trusted and who had already set the mood for three of Lindsay’s other relatives: DJ Joe Moorer and the group he plays with, the Conspiracy Band.
The night was perfect: filled with friends, family and dancing, bringing their love story full circle from that memorable school gym encounter more than a decade ago. «

Maddy CrawfordHarp + Tyler Harp
BY SAM ARTHURS
PHOTOS BY OHIO COMFORT PHOTOGRAPHY
As a freshman at Heidelberg University, Maddy (Crawford) wanted to be more involved with the school after her basketball season ended. She attended a meeting about gender equality on campus, where she met Tyler Harp, a senior and a member of the organization hosting the event. The two immediately hit it off, realizing they had a friend in common. Hoping to see each other again, they each asked their mutual friend about the other.
Their first date didn’t come until they were on summer break months later. Both back in their hometowns, Tyler drove from Toledo to Willard, where Maddy lived. Tyler ended up meeting Maddy’s whole family when he picked her up, winning them over right away—so much so that they would later become co-conspirators.
After Maddy graduated from college, the couple moved to Columbus, where Maddy began studying physical therapy at Ohio State University. During the 2020 pandemic, Tyler set up a secret FaceTime meeting with Maddy’s parents to ask permission to marry their daughter. From there, they hatched a plan to surprise an already suspecting Maddy. Because the two share a birthday on July 5, she thought he might surprise her then. But she underestimated how many people Tyler had enlisted in his plan.
Tyler orchestrated a surprise engagement at Maddy’s childhood home, one of her favorite places in the world. He sprinkled little notes throughout the house that led her to the backyard. The image of Tyler standing in front of the glittering lake that holds so many memories for Maddy stands out fresh in her mind, years later.
Family and personal touches have been constant parts of Maddy and Tyler’s relationship. Three years after their engagement, the couple brought so much of themselves to their wedding day. They walked down the aisle to sisters Ella and Naomi Schaag, friends from Maddy’s hometown, playing “Lover” by Taylor Swift on violin and piano. And their officiant was a family friend who had been a junior bridesmaid in Maddy’s parents’ wedding.
Maddy and Tyler are particularly thankful for their photographer and wedding coordinator Taylor Cox. They booked Taylor Cox of Ohio Comfort Photography two years before their big day, while she was still building her portfolio. The couple is still in love with the flawless photos, but they mostly remember how
comfortable Cox made everyone feel in front of the camera.
Meanwhile, Ann Marie Orren lived up to her glowing reputation at Scioto Reserve Country Club as a revered wedding planner. She mapped out every detail and executed to the minute, making the day flow seamlessly. But Maddy was particularly impressed by Orren’s thoughtfulness. After a packed schedule of wedding portraits, the couple came back to their table to find Orren had arranged to have their food kept warm in their absence. Maddy and Tyler couldn’t have been happier with everything.«
