from the editor

Welcome to Columbus Weddings dors were named the best of the best by more than 8,300 voters. *** Before I sign off, I’d be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the departure of our art director, Alyse Pasternak. Alyse and I have worked diligently on many projects outside of Columbus Weddings since I joined the Dispatch Magazines team six years ago, but this publication has always felt like our baby—especially after we took on the monumental task of redesigning it in 2020. Alyse’s calm demeanor and willingness to go above and beyond her normal job duties (how many designers will write headlines or generate story ideas? Answer: very few) have saved my sanity countless times, and I’ll be forever grateful for our partnership and friendship. When asked if she’d like to say anything about her eight years as the Columbus Weddings art director, her first response was just a flurry of crying emojis—too difficult, she said, to put her love for this publication into words. “Not everyone can say they got their dream job,” she wrote in a farewell email to our colleagues. “It’s been a real honor and privilege to do something I love for as long as I have.” I hope you’ll all join me in wishing Alyse the best of luck in everything she does … not that she’ll need it, I think. Her next colleagues will be privileged to have her. Happy planning,

They say the only constant in life is change, and in my experience, they’re right. In the last two and a half years, COVID-19 changed everything about the way we live our lives, do our jobs … and plan our weddings. But with caseloads and hospitalizations staying relatively low after the omicron surge in early 2022, we can finally begin settling into whatever “the new normal” means for us and applying the lessons we’ve learned over the course of the pandemic. In the world of weddings, that means we can again extend invitations to second and third cousins—or we can choose to share the livestream link to our intentionally small ceremony. It means we can elope to get that perfect wedding date and host a blowout reception on a Saturday (or Friday, or Sunday—more about that on Page 28) that’s more convenient. Above all, it means that setting a date no longer need feel like a gamble: Will caseloads spike? Will there be another mask mandate? Will we have to postpone again? In other words, wedding planning can once again be the joyful and only occasionally stressful process it was before. That’s where we come in, by the way. We’re so excited to bring you nearly 100 pages of larger-scale and mask-free wedding inspiration once more. There are tips to personalize your day in new ways (Page 24), a look at wedding vendors who are expanding into venue ownership (Page 22) and of course our Real Weddings section (Page 47), which takes a deeper dive into the local weddings of five unique couples. There’s also the mega-feature on the winners of our third annual Best of Columbus Weddings reader poll (Page 31). From three-time champs to newcomers to the ballot, these 50-plus ven-

Step back, flower girls; you have some competition. First, it was flower grams—grandmothers strewing petals down the aisle ahead of the bride—and now, Central Ohio weddings are seeing all kinds of riffs on the role once held mainly by nieces and daughters. And the petal power isn’t relegated strictly to pre-ceremony processions, either: Floral send-offs are growing in popularity as an ecofriendly alternative to scattering rice as the newlyweds make their exit. —Emma Frankart Henterly

Hues to Use Pantone’s color of the year for 2022, Very Peri, offers a new, violet-toned blue to consider for your wedding colors. Not sure how to use it? The world’s leading authority on color has a few suggested color palettes on its website; one of our favorites, dubbed Wellspring, is billed as “a holistic and harmonious blend of nature-infused shades.” With several blues, greens and browns to choose from, picking pops of color should be a snap. New & Noteworthy Openings, closings and changes in the Central Ohio wedding industry

RENDERING: JBAD COURTESY JORGENSEN FARMS

BY EMMA FRANKART HENTERLY OPENINGS The Barn of Hidden Valley recently held its first wedding. Nestled between New Albany and Granville, this rustic venue offers hourly and full-day rentals with access to the barn, dressing rooms, a patio and outdoor spaces. Tables and chairs are provided; an event planner and coordinator can be added for an additional fee. 4212 Northridge Road, Alexandria; 614-8964309; thebarnhv.com Buss Farms debuted its new event venue with an open house in May, though the first wedding officially took place there back in October 2021. NEWS A rendering of the new space at WatersEdge Event + Conference Venue

CLOSINGS We are sad to report that Stoutsville barn venue The Pavilion at Orchard View was destroyed by a fire in late November 2021. Fire officials suspect an electrical issue was to blame, according to the Lancaster Eagle-Gazette. No injuries or fatalities were reported. Via Vecchia Winery, located on the South Side, was sold to new owners in January, according to an email from previous coowner Michael Elmer. The event venue located next door to the winery is closed. CHANGES One of Central Ohio’s most popular venues, Jorgensen Farms, is renovating its Historic Barn. Joining the barn will be a new ceremony building; a courtyard between the two spaces was designed with cocktail hours in mind. Two new suites with a joining covered patio will serve as ready rooms for couples and will each include a living area, kitchenette, vanity space and full bathroom. The new spaces are slated to open Sept. 2, with an open house on Oct. 2. 7500 Harlem Road, Westerville; 614855-2697; jorgensen-farms.com Another Central Ohio mainstay in the wedding sphere, WatersEdge Event + Conference Venue, is also expanding. Upon completion in 2023, the Hilliard facility will be 20,000 square feet and will feature two distinct spaces; the new addition will have midcentury modern and industrial design influences. 4643 Trueman Blvd., Hilliard; 614-532-4702; watersedgeevents.biz WatersEdge’s parent company, BTTS Holdings, has partnered with High Bank Distillery Co. to create an exclusive collection of 12 signature cocktails. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Friends of the Lower Olentangy Watershed, or FLOW. btts.biz, highbankdistillery.com In January, the photography duo Ben Hartley and Ben Adams of Style & Story split up. Hartley and his family took the Style & Story name with them to their new home in Tampa, Florida, while Adams launched his own brand, Storyteller Adams. “My goal is simple,” he says. “I will be providing a high-end photography experience, giving brides peace of mind when it comes to their wedding photos.” storytelleradams.com

QUIET RESPITE Brittany and Matthew Chandler read private vows to each other during their first look on July 24, 2021, at Crockett’s Run. “It’s so crazy how much chaos is involved in a wedding day,” Brittany says. “After all the hair and makeup and photos, I finally walked onto the wooded path to meet Matt for our first look. ... Seeing Matt in that moment was absolutely the best single moment on that day, and definitely one of the top five moments in my life.”

INDUSTRY Henry Photography owners Ashley and Coty Henry acquired Magnolia Hill Farm in 2018; its first wedding was held there the following spring. The Henrys had been operating their wedding photography business since 2010. Here, Alex (left) and DJ Szuhay’s ceremony on Aug. 14, 2021.

Double Duty Photographers, planners and other Central Ohio wedding vendors are getting into the venue game.

As the owner of the wedding and event planning company The Planning Bee, Karima Crawford enjoys nothing more than thinking about, dreaming up and mapping out weddings. “I love the aspect that comes along with it: the clients, and being able to work with people to execute an event, and [seeing] everybody happy,” says Crawford, who soon will not only help engaged couples plot out their day but also provide an ideal space for vows to be exchanged, photos to be taken and cake to be consumed. While continuing to oversee The Planning Bee, Crawford will soon open a new wedding and event venue called Genesis Downtown. Located on the ground floor of the Standard building on the corner of Long and Fourth streets in Downtown Columbus, the new venue is co-owned by Crawford and hospitality industry veteran Taylor Keene. With floor-to-ceiling windows allowing natural light to stream in and chandeliers that are tasteful but not ostentatious, the two designed 22

a stylish Downtown aesthetic that is flexible for parties of any size. Crawford sees opening her own wedding venue as the culmination of her years of working with couples as a planner. “It’s always been a goal of mine to own a venue,” she says. “Owning an event space was kind of like the cherry on top for me.” And Crawford is far from the only one: Across the Central Ohio wedding scene, numerous vendors are opening their own venues. They describe the move as a logical one; after all, those who plan, photograph or provide other goods or services at weddings are likely to know something about what makes a venue good or bad. “We’re educated [about weddings], and we care about making the experience better,” says photographer Christene Logesky, who, with her husband, Andrew, opened the event venue 1883 Locale in Reynoldsburg in 2021. The pair had already been photographing weddings as Andrew and Chrissy Photography since 2012.

“A lot of times, venues open up and they don’t have the experience of the day-to-day details of a wedding,” Logesky says. “Why is this bridal suite so small? And why is there no storage? And why isn’t there a plating room?” Logesky has a personal connection to the building that now houses 1883 Locale, which was formerly home to Connell Hardware: For decades, her family had owned a restaurant, Vick’s Pizza, in a neighboring building. “I actually grew up next to the [Connell] building, and have been in and out of the building my whole life,” she says. Then, several years ago, Vick’s relocated its operations to the ground floor of the Connell building. Meanwhile, the upstairs portion sat unused. When Logesky and her husband decided to open their own venue, taking over the upstairs was an obvious choice. “If we would have built from the ground up, it would be—who knows—$2 million, easily,” Logesky says. “Our debt we acquired is one-fifth what we would have if we would have built a venue that looked like this.” Not that the couple spared any expense: A brick wall was repaired and painted— “People love our brick: it’s a selling point,” Logesky says—and wood that was on-site was repurposed. “All of our farm tables were built from the original drop ceiling,” she says. “The building really gave us some beautiful things.” Even the name of the venue refers to its past: “We named it 1883 Locale because ‘locale’ was the term for a venue in the 1880s,” she says. With their photography background, the owners knew the space needed to be functional on couples’ wedding days. “We were very excited to open a venue where we could have that knowledge behind it. We’re going to make sure the bridal suite has lots of light, we’re going to make sure it has a neutral palette,” Logesky says. Central Ohio wedding industry veterans Josh and Michelle Staley had similar instincts when renovating their recently opened venue, The Postmark, in Chillicothe. “We know what a chaotic wedding day looks like and what a smooth wedding day looks like, and what it takes to make that happen,” says Michelle, who owns Michelle Joy Photography. Her husband, Josh, owns DJ company Josh Staley Productions. The venue, originally a post office that was later turned into a restaurant, school and event venue, fell into the married couple’s laps: The in-laws of one of Josh’s employees owned the building and were looking to sell. “We went down and looked at it, and just saw the potential,” Josh says.

The main floor, which can hold up to 175, is used for events; the bridal suite is upstairs and a groom’s lounge, downstairs. Old-fashioned carpeting was ripped up and replaced with new flooring, and light fixtures were added, among other improvements. And they’re not done yet. “We actually have since bought the house next door and turned that into an Airbnb with a backyard ceremony space,” Josh says. “Guests who come to get married there can actually stay at that house next door.” The Staleys see the business as something couples will be drawn to regardless of whether they avail themselves of services provided by Josh and Michelle’s other businesses. “I actually haven’t photographed a wedding at Postmark yet,” Michelle says. (Another business run by Josh, a budget DJ brand called Turn Up Columbus, has serviced weddings at The Postmark as part of one of the packages offered.) The Logeskys also regarded 1883 Locale as distinct from their photography business, but they saw that venue clients were interested in hiring them to shoot their weddings once they realize they were photographers. “Now we’re floating both businesses with one form of advertising,” Logesky says. For her part, Crawford says that while she feels both of her businesses will benefit from her becoming a venue owner, she will always strive to put clients’ interests first: If Genesis Downtown, which can accommodate up to 250 people for a cocktail reception, is a good venue, so be it—but if it doesn’t suit a couple’s needs, she’ll suggest the wedding take place elsewhere. “If I don’t think that it would be a right fit, then I’m going to steer them to

some of the other amazing venues that are here in Columbus,” says Crawford, who has on her team a liaison to work with couples who book both The Planning Bee and Genesis Downtown. “That way, there’s not that conflict of interest,” Crawford says. (Couples who book at Genesis and decide to use The Planning Bee are eligible for a 10 percent discount on Planning Bee packages.) At least one Central Ohioan saw the trend of vendor-owned venues coming early: Teena Parker of Ampersand Flowers & Events in Worthington has made her small space available for events since opening her establishment about three years ago. “My background is in event planning and running a venue versus flowers,” Parker says. “When I saw a space that could be both a flower shop and an event space, I just kind of went for it.” Parker describes the venue as a blank slate. “It’s very bright, light, airy,” she says. “There are huge floor-to-ceiling windows. The walls are white. The floors a light gray.” While not a large space—capacity tops out at about 30—it can accommodate both bridal showers and intimate ceremonies. (Parker is a licensed officiant.) There is no preferred vendor list, though Ampersand is the exclusive florist for the space. “When I’m not utilizing the space as my own flower workshop, I can rent it out to other people to use,” Parker says. In the end, vendors tout their venues because of their unique perspective on the kinds of spaces that work best for weddings. “We see the needs, and we’re like: ‘We know how to do this,’ ” Logesky says. “So why wouldn’t we do it?” «

Built in the early 1900s, The Postmark was first renovated into a banquet hall in the 1960s. Josh and Michelle Staley, who own Josh Staley Productions and Michelle Joy Photography, became co-owners of the venue in 2019. Put Your Name on It Personalize your wedding décor in unique ways BY EMMA FRANKART HENTERLY In Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” Juliet asked, “What’s in a name?” Well, we at Columbus Weddings have a different question: What’s your name on? While cake toppers proclaiming the newlyweds’ new shared name or monogram will always be a classic way to personalize your day, Central Ohio couples are thinking outside the (cake) box and getting creative with their customization. One of the hottest recent trends that’s fast becoming a wedding-day mainstay is a wood-

Emilee carried a customized beaded clutch bearing the wedding date and her married initials; Brian, meanwhile, sported cufflinks with his initials and a customized Breitling watch etched with his name and the emblem of his squadron in the Navy. That includes the cutouts of their cats’ faces, which were included among the photo booth props for the day, and the neon “Drunk in Love” sign that graced the backdrop. The cats, Mushu and Theo, also appeared on custom cocktail napkins at the bar. Guest favors took the form of cookies with an L (for Lukacs) in icing, and an elegant gold cake topper displayed their new shared last name. FALL/WINTER 2022 COLUMBUS WEDDINGS

Irina and Nicolas Miller MARRIED DEC. 17, 2021, AT JORGENSEN FARMS OAK GROVE The Millers’ wedding included many personal details (see more on Pages 59-60), and their names or initials appeared in a number of places: on a customized acrylic ring box, on Irina’s dress hanger, in neon on a greenery display behind the bar, and on cookies that served as guest favors. The cookies carried another element of personalization: a starry sky theme, which was found throughout the wedding décor in a nod to Nicolas’ love of space. 26

Because they kept their own last names, it made sense for Kyle and John to choose an elegant script version of their first-name initials for their sign. The entire day was designed to reflect their personalities, according to Kyle. “We made the wedding ours,” he says. “We enjoyed every minute of it and made sure to focus it around us.”

MARRIED SEPT. 10, 2021, AT JORGENSEN FARMS OAK GROVE “Adam and I both love an Old-Fashioned. I’m also pretty picky when it comes to ice in those and like a large cube,” Sydney says. “[It] seems a little silly to spend money on ice, but honestly they just taste better with big ice cubes!” She and Adam ordered large cubes with their initials branded on top from Rock On Ice. “They went perfectly with our branded fruit, also with our initials,” Sydney says. “It was just such a special touch and made the cocktails delicious and cute.” The couple’s initials also appeared on custom napkins and the cake topper.

MARRI ED JAN. 15, 2022, AT ST. PAUL THE APOSTLE CHURCH; RECEPTI ON AT HI GH LINE CAR HOUSE The Pryatels incorporated personal details in numerous ways, from wearing family heirlooms to DIYed cornhole boards that served as their guest book. A custom neon sign bearing their last name hung behind their sweetheart table, and their handmade cake topper, sourced from Etsy, was designed to look just like them—right down to their attire and flowers. “I plan to turn them into Christmas ornaments,” Hannah says. Their likenesses appeared in one other spot that day: on customized M&Ms that served as guest favors.

Marques Hillman Richeson and Charles Hillman MARRIED NOV. 13, 2021, AT WALDEN IN AURORA, OHIO An artistic design incorporated Marques and Charles’ initials in the form of a custom gobo from Cleveland-based NPi Entertainment and on guests’ favors: mason jar candles. TREND

The Case for Weekday Weddings Increased demand for Saturday weddings drives some couples to consider alternate options.

After two years of canceled events and pandemic restrictions, wedding season is once again in full effect. But with two years’ worth of rescheduled weddings, couples excited to finally say “I do” are finding their dream venue has every Saturday booked until next year … or even the year after. Rather than having their dream of the perfect wedding dashed, a new trend has emerged from the post-pandemic wedding boom: Weekday weddings are in—with surprising advantages. “For us, all our Saturdays are booked from May to October. I’ve had brides reschedule their weddings four or five times, and they’re just exhausted by it,” says Lisa Johnson, private event sales director at Royal American Links. “But couples are getting creative and realizing there’s no ‘wrong day’ to get married.” For many Columbus couples, the pros of a weekday wedding far outweigh any cons. Not 28

only does booking a venue on a non-Saturday allow couples to exchange vows at their dream venue, but a weekday wedding often means lower costs, better vendor availability and, for some, extra celebrating. That was the case for newlyweds Sydney KeeneGrimes and her husband, Adam Grimes. The couple got married on a Friday at Jorgensen Farms. “Most of our guests were coming from out of town and staying until Monday anyway, so we decided to make it a weekendlong thing,” Keene-Grimes says. “We had a welcome cocktail at the hotel with everyone, then the next night we all went to Pins Mechanical Co. It was so great actually spending quality time with the people we love outside the chaos of the wedding day.” While the couple hoped for a Saturday, having a September wedding was most important to Keene-Grimes.

“My parents were married in September,” she says. “My father passed when I was 14, and having a September wedding felt like a way to honor him.” The Friday date was also less expensive, leaving room in the budget for several special touches. (Two of their upgrades, customized ice cubes and bar garnishes, are featured on Page 27.) “We also wanted a photo booth prop we could keep, so we splurged on a neon sign that said, ‘Drunk in Love,’ ” KeeneGrimes says. Cost savings can be a major reason for couples to consider planning a Friday, Sunday or even Thursday wedding. “If you book an off-season wedding on

a Monday, the price break is going to be significant,” says Jorgensen Farms event director Molly Blundred. “Many times, the savings on the venue alone frees up enough of the budget for the couple to upgrade whatever they want.” That was the case for Kaitlynne and Thomas Flanigan, who were married on a Sunday in October at Pinnacle Golf Club. “We saved $2,000 just for having it on Sunday,” says Kaitlynne Flanigan. “We used the extra money to upgrade our beer [and] get some nice gifts for our guests.”

The lower rate wasn’t the only perk the couple and their guests enjoyed. “The couple from the wedding the night before didn’t feel like taking down their furniture, so they let us use it for free,” Flanigan says. “It was like a little surprise upgrade.” Having a weekday wedding has other perks—like not competing with the Buckeyes for your guests’ attention. “Our whole family is huge Ohio State fans,” says Keene-Grimes. “And we’ve all been at a wedding where people are constantly checking scores.” However, weekday fetes require different considerations than a traditional Saturday event. Factors like increased traffic and work schedules should be taken into account. “It can be hard for people to make travel arrangements or get off work during the week. Be sure to check that people can make it,” says Johnson. “It’s important to remember people don’t stay out as late on weeknights, so think about your timeline as well.” In addition, Johnson and Blundred both suggest checking on the venue’s timeline for removing any décor or rental furniture for the space’s next event. “It was kind of a time crunch to get our rental furniture out of the venue for the wedding the next day,” says KeeneGrimes. “We didn’t love having to go back to the venue that early the next day, but it worked out.” Whether planning a Sunday brunch reception or a Friday party that melds into a laid-back Saturday hang, the most important thing is celebrating the best way for you and your spouse. “I think people would talk about it forever,” Johnson says. “Like, ‘remember when you got married on a Thursday?’” « 30

Carson & Andrew Kitzmiller BY ABERNATHY MILLER | PHOTOS BY THE BRAUNS When Andrew and Carson (Wagner) Kitzmiller exchanged vows at Carson’s childhood home in Lewis Center, it was the couple’s second time saying “I do,” but their first chance to celebrate with loved ones. “It was like we finally got our big day,” says Carson. “We didn’t know when or if it was ever going to happen.” But after three years, a global pandemic, a rescheduled wedding and an impromptu ceremony, everything came together. Andrew, a dentist, and Carson, a market researcher, met at Ohio State University in 2012 through mutual friends. “I was really drawn to how frank and upfront [Andrew] is,” says Carson. “But it was our mutual spontaneity and curiosity for life that really brought us together.” Spontaneity is something the couple has in spades, evidenced by a whirlwind trip to Europe before they got engaged. “We randomly bought standby tickets to Europe when there was an airline that had a deal. We just took a backpack each and just went to Paris,” says Andrew. “It was exciting wondering if we would get a seat on the next flight.” After a romantic proposal in Goodale Park, the couple—who now live in Cincinnati—planned their big day 48

for September 2020, complete with all the bells and whistles. But the pandemic put an indefinite hold on their plans. They rescheduled for September 2021, but stayed true to their spontaneous nature and their original plan, in a way. “We scrapped the idea for the big wedding and had a surprise ceremony with 10 people the day before our original date,” says Carson. “But since we already had the 2021 date held, we decided to throw a big party then, too.” Having it at Carson’s parents’ home added several layers of sentimentality. “My family built that house when I was 13, and sold it shortly after [the wedding],” she says. “It was kind of the perfect send-off.” The couple’s elegant, bohemian-themed fete included flowers by Bear Roots Floral, boho lighting fixtures and specialty cocktails named for the Kitzmiller’s English bulldog, Winston. “The best part was finally getting to experience it together,” says Andrew. “Seeing her in the dress that’d been hanging in her closet for three years was incredible.” Adds Carson, “Everyone was just ready to celebrate. The whole weekend was a serotonin high.” «

Sarah & Irina Padua BY LAURIE ALLEN PHOTOS BY BEAR CREATIVE CO. Sarah (Paul) and Irina Padua’s wedding took place 3,000 miles from where it was originally planned, but the couple says it was better than either could have imagined. COVID-19 forced Irina and Sarah to relocate their wedding from California to Ohio and to scale it back dramatically. The couple ended up doing the wedding planning themselves, and their families pitched in to decorate and help make their wedding dreams come true in Granville. “It was perfect: It was a small, intimate wedding and a small venue,” Sarah says. “We are so glad it worked out this way.” The pair met in Cleveland during a post-graduate program in preparation for medical school. “I had come from San Francisco, and I knew no one,” Irina says. “Sarah and I were in a lot of classes together, and she was my first and closest friend.” Their friendship grew into a romantic partnership, and in October 2018, Irina proposed in a unique way. She had invited their families to an annual pumpkincarving event where attendees turned their finished pumpkins around one by one. When it was her turn, Irina revealed what she had carved: “Will you marry me?” Sarah, who had just gotten off a plane after interviewing for a residency program, definitely was not expecting the proposal. “I didn’t even have the time to take a shower or try to look nice,” she laughs. The wedding and reception took place outdoors at the historic Bancroft Cottage at Seek-No-Further Cidery in Granville, which Sarah found on Instagram. It was the first such event for the venue, which previously had held one elopement. They chose another “newcomer” in the then-home-based Three Bites Bakery. Desserts were a nod to Sarah’s Italian heritage and Irina’s Filipino lineage and included Italian wedding cake, tiramisu and Filipino Polvoron cookie favors; in an interesting twist, the wedding cake baker herself is half-Italian and half-Filipino. Sarah honored her father, who died unexpectedly nine months before the wedding, with several special touches. Her wedding bouquet included a photo charm with his picture and a blue flower made from one of his shirts; a heart-shaped piece of the same fabric was sewn inside her dress. Ultimately, the Paduas are grateful their wedding didn’t leave them feeling pulled in several directions the way a larger event might have. “What I really loved was how much time I got to spend with Irina during the day,” Sarah says. “I wouldn’t change a thing.” « FALL/WINTER 2022 COLUMBUS WEDDINGS

Shivani Patel & Dheeraj Muddasani BY ABERNATHY MILLER | PHOTOS BY STYLE & STORY Shivani Patel has been on dating apps before, so when she extended the distance setting on an Indian-specific dating app, she wasn’t expecting to meet her future husband. That all changed when she matched with Dheeraj Muddasani, a doctor in Louisville, Kentucky. “I thought he’d never reach out—but then he did and asked to talk on the phone. That really impressed me,” says Shivani. “I immediately thought, ‘This guy is awesome.’” “We had an instant connection,” adds Dheeraj. “We’d have eight-hour conversations, and it felt like no time had passed.” Seven months after their first date at Pins Mechanical Co. and several trips between their cities, Dheeraj planned a proposal in Columbus. But the pandemic thwarted his best-laid plans. “I hired a photographer, called her family, I had this huge production planned—and it all just fell apart,” he says, laughing. “It took a pandemic with no end in sight for me to propose at my apartment [in Louisville].” Shivani was ecstatic, though very surprised. “We had both been working from home for weeks. He had to make up a reason for me to change out of my sweatpants,” she says. The couple wanted their wedding to incorporate elements of traditional Indian weddings, with modern 52

twists. They hired Columbus event planner Aisle & Co. to bring their big day to life. “Indian weddings are a lot to take on. It was Natasha [Churches, owner of Aisle & Co.] who really stepped up and made it special,” says Shivani. In addition to wanting a Hindu priest to perform the ceremony, it was important that Indian cuisine be served at the reception—a task they were grateful to have Aisle & Co. help with. “Right before the wedding, our caterer fell through,” says Dheeraj. “We couldn’t believe Natasha found a replacement almost immediately.” The couple wed at the Westin Great Southern Columbus as 200 guests looked on and enjoyed treats from Mardi Gras Homemade Ice Cream, which specializes in traditional Indian flavors. “My mother said it reminded her of the flavors she had in her village in India,” says Shivani. But the couple’s favorite part of the wedding was how easy their vendors made it for their families. “Weddings can be very stressful—I didn’t want my mom to go through that,” says Shivani. “We could not have had such an amazing wedding weekend without each and every one of [our vendors].” «

Kendall & Ashley Loyer BY DANA RANDALL PHOTOS BY THEORY IMAGE When Kendall Loyer and Ashley Dorner met in January 2017, neither of them could have imagined that a few years later they would be exchanging vows. “Kendall was a boxing instructor at the gym where I attended fitness classes,” recalls Ashley, now Ashley Loyer. “She had no idea if I was gay or lesbian or anything like that, and I wasn’t giving her any hints because I didn’t even know. But it was very funny and intriguing to feel like ‘I really love this person and I’m going to explore why I feel this way.’” Kendall later asked Ashley if she wanted to go out for pho, and by April, they were officially “a thing,” Ashley says. Despite her initial uncertainty about dating a woman for the first time, she felt certain enough to present Kendall with a promise ring just a couple of months later. The proposal began as a bicoastal agreement over the phone while Ashley was attending Navy Supply Corps School in Newport, Rhode Island, and Kendall was starting her Ph.D. program at University of California, Riverside. The couple had an informal ceremony at a courthouse in Rhode Island in 2020. Ashley gave Kendall a more formal proposal a few months later; after multiple deployments and COVID challenges, they were finally able to celebrate with friends and family in December 2021. “The wedding itself got pushed back a couple times,” says Ashley. “But Jorgensen Farms was amazing at working with us to shift dates as necessary and help make our wedding day feel as special as possible.” Family and friends pitched in, too: An old friend from high school offered to officiate, since he lived nearby and was already ordained, and Kendall’s mother baked desserts for the day, including a pineapple upside-down cake in lieu of a traditional tiered cake. The brides added another special touch to the night by changing outfits after the ceremony. “One of the most memorable moments for us was seeing everyone’s faces as we entered for the ceremony, and then again afterward with our outfit changes,” says Ashley. “We are truly thankful for our vendors that helped bring our vision to life,” Kendall adds. “It all truly felt like magic and went by way too fast.” « 54

Madeline & Austin Fu BY VIRGINIA BROWN | PHOTOS BY NICOLE DIXON PHOTOGRAPHIC Madeline Crosby and Austin Fu’s story began in a materials science class at Upper Arlington High School, where they were assigned lab partners their senior year. After getting to know each other, Madeline, now 26 and Madeline Fu, took a leap. “I initiated a Sadie Hawkins dance proposal,” she says. “I got creative with a science word problem, which was kind of nerdy at the time, but I still have it. It’s in our little box of memories.” For their first official date, Austin, who is also 26, took Madeline to Tensuke Express in Japan Marketplace. “You ordered a bowl of udon noodles,’’ Austin says to Madeline. “And you taught me how to use chopsticks,” she says. Three months later, Austin asked Madeline to travel to Taiwan with him to meet his extended family. Born in Columbus, Austin had moved with his family back to Taiwan as a baby, returning to Ohio as a teenager. “Meeting extended family and seeing his roots really blossomed our relationship and strengthened it,” Madeline says. After high school, Madeline set off for college at Loyola University Chicago; Austin had enrolled at the University of Colorado Boulder. “I really didn’t want to start [a relationship], but it just kind of happened,” Madeline says. After his freshman year, Austin transferred to Ohio 56

State University to be closer to Madeline; after college, the pair both ended up in Columbus. Austin proposed in August 2020 at the Columbus Park of Roses. On Oct. 23, 2021, the couple married at St. Christopher Catholic Church in Grandview. Madeline, who had always wanted a fall wedding, chose the colors wine, green and gold. To find her dress, she visited several boutiques and bridal salons but eventually purchased one she had seen before, new, from someone who had eloped because of the COVID-19 pandemic. “It was less expensive and in better condition than the two sample stores,” she says. A wedding-day surprise came when Madeline’s mother, who had won a performance from the Ohio State alumni marching band in a raffle, booked them to play at the reception. “We were participating in our own cocktail hour, and all of a sudden they appeared and played for 20 to 30 minutes,” Madeline says. “That was definitely something very memorable.” Because many of Austin’s extended family members could not fly in from overseas for the event, the couple hopes to hold a second reception in Taiwan when travel restrictions lift.«

EMILEE DEUTCHMAN-BLASCHKE AND BRIAN BLASCHKE | Nov. 20, 2021 Familial touches were found throughout Emilee and Brian’s day at the Athletic Club of Columbus: The ceremony included the tallit prayer shawl from her father’s bar mitzvah and the kiddush cup from her parents’ wedding. At the reception, Brian cut their cake with the ceremonial naval officer sword his grandmother gifted to him when he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy.

MEGAN MCGINNIS AND DANIEL JUAREZ | Feb. 2, 2022 Megan and Daniel’s Franklin County Municipal Court elopement was small in attendance, but large in detail. Two tiny Lego figurines, carried in Megan’s bouquet, stood in for their wedding party, and their pets served as honorary ring bearer and flower girl. The newlyweds enjoyed dinner with their families at The Refectory; they’ll have a more traditional reception at a future date.

JAW-DROPPING “Right after dinner, before our first dance, we were doing some rounds at guest tables and heard a huge, collective gasp in the crowd,” says Ali Larrick. The gasp was one of awe, however, as staff at Revery at North 4th Corridor opened the space’s roof. “It was a huge ‘wow’ moment. We did our first dance there under the stars … it was completely magical.” Ali married Daniel Sewberath Misser on Oct. 1, 2021. Their first dance was to “The Bones” by Maren Morris, chosen for its message, Ali says. “The song’s lyrics exemplify how, when the foundation of your relationship is good and you’re committed to working on it, you can get through anything.”
