from the editor
Welcome to Columbus Weddings our recommendations based on real couples’ choices on Page 12. We also profiled one couple who followed a private elopement with a portrait session (Page 24), dove into the mechanics of livestreaming your service (Page 26) and asked local pros some of the most common COVID-19 questions we’re seeing (Page 22). Find inspiration in our Real Weddings section (starting on Page 47), which includes four couples who married this year, and in a styled photo shoot feature (Page 28) that explores an alternative to the traditional Saturday evening reception—something that may be hard to come by in the next year as 2020 couples who postponed continue to reschedule their events. Finally, I want to stress the importance of supporting the local economy. The diverse small businesses that make up Central Ohio’s wedding industry need your help. I encourage everyone to book locally based professionals, shop at independent stores and shout out the vendors who serve you well. One way to show them love is by voting for your favorite vendors in our annual Best of Columbus Weddings reader poll, now through Feb. 5, 2021, at cbuswedmag.com/Vote. If creating this issue has taught me anything, it’s that Central Ohioans find a way to survive and thrive amid a multitude of challenges. I hope this issue can help you do just that as you plan your weddings for 2021 and beyond. Stay safe and be well,

Ask any magazine editor, and they’ll likely tell you that letters from the editor are difficult to write. Such is the case with any recurring column, I suspect, but trying to encapsulate an entire magazine in a few hundred words only increases the challenge. Add to that the fact that we’re still in the throes of a global pandemic that has changed life—including wedding celebrations—as we know it, and you’ll understand why I stared at a blinking cursor far longer than I usually do when writing my biannual introduction to this magazine. So much of our day-to-day in 2020 is unrecognizable from the previous year, and while hope is on the horizon, it’ll likely be quite some time before we start returning to any sense of normalcy. As I write this letter in mid-November, Ohio is seeing its third and largest wave of COVID-19 cases, and the pandemic continues to ravage the country and the world. These facts were on our minds as we planned this issue: How do we celebrate weddings when mass gatherings are still discouraged? How do we offer advice when so much is unknown and ever-changing? In the end, we at Columbus Weddings did exactly what so many couples in the pages that follow have done: We planned, we adjusted, and we made do. We didn’t set out to make “the COVID-19 issue”—I’m sure you, like many of us, are feeling pandemic fatigue—but as the weeks wore on, we realized that such a theme was our only option. And while that theme is a bit grim, there are a lot of bright spots mixed into these pages—moments of resilience and ingenuity that give me hope for the continued success of the wedding industry in Central Ohio and beyond. Throughout the region, couples are adapting. This issue is filled with examples, but you can find

How They Did It Real-life details to inspire your wedding planning BY EMMA FRANKART HENTERLY Weddings, like many aspects of life in the COVID-19 pandemic, have looked a little different this year. From intimate ceremonies—which we’re officially dubbing “minimonies”—with plans for grand celebrations later to socially distant in-person events, local couples are finding ways to celebrate safely and with style. Here (and throughout the issue), we’ve highlighted our favorite real-life examples of how local couples are adapting to love in the time of coronavirus. Incorporate as many as you can to ensure a responsible and fun event of your own.
Take It Outside
PHOTOS: LEFT, CAPTURE PHOTOGRAPHY (2); ABOVE, DERK’S WORKS PHOTOGRAPHY (2)
When weather permits, an outdoor or open-air event is ideal. Small, enclosed spaces can turn a wedding into a super-spreader event in the blink of an eye. Below, Natalie and Joshua McPheron hosted their Aug. 15 wedding at The Farm at Harvest Hills in Delaware. The outdoor ceremony was followed by a barn reception with doors left open for air circulation.

Alone, Together
For three weeks before their July 25 wedding at Vue Columbus, Hannah and Eric Young self-quarantined to ensure they’d have zero exposure to COVID-19. They took lots of other precautions: color-coded wristbands for guests to indicate their physical contact comfort level, a giant 20-sided die roll in lieu of a bouquet toss and of course strict mask enforcement.
PHOTOST: BOTTOM LEFT, GABRIELLA SUTHERLAND PHOTOGRAPHY (2); TOP RIGHT, ASHLEY WALLACE PHOTOGRAPHY; BOTTOM RIGHT, ERICA KAY PHOTOGRAPHY (2)
Left, Mackenzie and Jim Hirst opted for an entirely outdoor ceremony and reception at Brookside Golf & Country Club on Sept. 19. Portable heaters and a bonfire helped keep guests comfortable after the sun went down. And the guests’ favors? Customized bottles of hand sanitizer, of course.
Keep It Clean The shelter house at The Old Blue Rooster Event Center has open sides and plenty of ceiling fans, which allowed for both excellent air circulation and protection from the elements at Jillian and Matthew Shoaf’s Sept. 5 wedding reception. The ceremony took place just outside, on the lawn.
Hand sanitizer as a guest favor is a no-brainer—and guests are sure to use it more than, say, a custom magnet or koozie. Above, Sarah and Ian Coldiron gave guests at their Sept. 26 COSI wedding mini sanitizer bottles featuring custom labels; they also had a candy bar with their favorite individually wrapped sweets.

Masking Up
Marrying during a pandemic isn’t fun. Make the most of the historical significance of the event by commemorating it with newlywed portraits featuring custom masks, as Jessica and Katie Morrison, left, did on Aug. 22 at The Barn at Heather Glen in Sugar Grove. Bonus: The photo will serve as an automatic storytelling moment for your grandkids in the years to come.
Above, Abby and Matt Wrieden used masks and silly straws to safely party with a sense of humor during their reception at The Fives on Sept. 26. They wed earlier that day at sister venue High Line Car House.
Give Them Space
Social distancing isn’t just for the grocery store. Meredith and Nick Helfferich, right, ensured proper separation for their Aug. 22 ceremony at The Westin Great Southern Columbus by utilizing California-style seating, wherein guests sit at their dinner tables. Staff didn’t have to flip the room during cocktail hour and, because tables were 6 feet apart, guests never got too close.

You might be sick of hearing it, but the bottom line is that masks work. Ask your vendors, guests and wedding party to wear them to help prevent disaster among attendees. Don’t want to cramp your style? A clear face mask, like the one worn by the mother of the groom at Kirthi and Matthew Shelton’s Aug. 8 wedding at Bell Manor in Chillicothe, pictured below, is an unobtrusive alternative.
Let Them Eat Sweets
Individually wrapped cookies from Cookie Lady Columbus, pictured below, served double-duty as a contact-free dessert and a guest favor at Jennifer and Jeffrey Hart’s Athletic Club of Columbus wedding on Sept. 5. The couple also ordered a small, three-tier cutting cake from Alice’s Piece of Cake.

Go Live
Long a backup plan for guests who aren’t able to travel, livestreaming has become a go-to solution for guests near and far to catch a ceremony without being physically present. Haley and Sam Metzger asked a friend to record their July 4 ceremony at The Grand Barn at The Mohicans; see Page 26 to learn about vendors offering the service.
Above, Brittany and Jason Myers asked Kelly’s Cakery to create several flavors of cupcakes for their Sept. 5 wedding at Pinnacle Golf Club. (The Myers also had a lovely three-tier cake for display and cutting.) Cupcake flavors included maple bacon, cookie dough, Irish cream, buckeye, and Champagne and strawberry. COLOR
Color Your World Each issue, we highlight the Pantone Color Institute’s trend forecasts. For the first six months of 2021, the leading authority on color is predicting a shift toward bright and pastel. “Offering a range of shades illustrative of nature, colors for spring/summer 2021 underscores our desire for flexible color that works year-round,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, on the palette’s web page. The hues “combine a level of comfort and relaxation with sparks of energy that encourage and uplift our moods.” Central Ohio couples are ahead of the curve, having incorporated a number of these trendy tints for their 2019 and 2020 weddings.

Something Borrowed Argo & Lehne’s bridal jewelry loan program makes every couple feel like stars. When A-list celebrities hit the red carpet draped in dazzling jewels, they’re often loaned, not owned. This tradition inspired trusted third-generation jeweler Argo & Lehne to launch its Something Borrowed program. All couples who purchase their wedding rings at the shop are eligible to reserve pieces from the carefully curated collection of vintage, contemporary and custom designs to borrow and wear on their wedding day. Jewelry may be reserved as far in advance as desired, by shopping inventory online or in the Upper Arlington showroom with the friendly team; backup selections are noted in case first-choice selections are sold come wedding day. Pieces may be picked up two days prior to the wedding and returned the day after, usually by a prearranged friend or relative. “Our bridal customers range from first-time 20-somethings to 90-yearolds who have found new love,” says owner Robert Argo. As such, the collection offers pieces (for loan and sale) perfectly suited to a broad range of personal styles. “We had one bride who had a cowboy wedding with a square dance; she borrowed most of our pearl strands and used them as a multistrand belt and multistrand hat band for her 10-gallon hat.” Argo adds, “Our business is based on relationships; [we] welcome everyone just as we would our most important lifelong customer.” In other words, you’ll feel like a star. —Brooke Preston

EXPANSION Despite an economic downturn during a global pandemic, Gilded Social owner Tanya Hartman is growing her bridesmaid and social occasion gown storefront. Last fall, the shop teamed up with downstairs neighbor Due Amici to offer shoppers a prix fixe meal in its loft-style private event space. (A streamlined menu, lunch or brunch, a beverage and a takeaway dessert runs $25.) “We time it around when you’re having your appointment with us,” Hartman says. “We’re really trying to help you have the absolute best dress shopping, ordering and wearing experience possible.” To that end, in December the shop started offering cleaning services through longtime partners Dublin Cleaners. The shop provides pre-purchase options, pickup and delivery within Central Ohio, a day-after pickup service for garments that includes cleaning, and
a Gilded Garment package featuring a garment bag, a steam session, dry cleaning and a mini emergency kit. Other new offerings include sample and unworn gowns that national bridal retailer BHLDN has donated to the national charity Wish Upon A Wedding. Gilded Social will sell the gowns on behalf of the charity and split the proceeds, Hartman says, meaning half of all sales will go back to support the services Wish Upon A Wedding provides to couples facing medical hardships. And coming in January will be wedding-day styling assistance. “[The assistant] can be that extra set of hands ... and provide peace of mind,” Hartman says. “Our job doesn’t have to be over when you walk out of the store.” There’s much more going on behind the scenes at Gilded Social; visit cbuswedmag.com/Gilded for more details. —Virginia Brown

CHANGE Short North Trolley Co. and Columbus Trolley continue to make progress on their merger, which we first reported in our fall/winter 2020 issue. Columbus Trolley owner Mike Middaugh says the two companies now are operating out of the same garage and sharing a pool of drivers; between them they have four trolleys, plus the vehicles available through Columbus Trolley’s parent company, Coach Quarters. Middaugh expects the merger to be finalized, complete with a new name for the joined businesses, in early 2021. shortnorthtrolley.com, columbustrolley.com
CHANGE In late October, Milo’s Catering took over the spaces formerly known as Dock 580 and Juniper, which closed in June due to hardships presented by the coronavirus pandemic. The main space, the Venue at Dock 580, will be known as Brick & Mortar at North 4th Corridor; the Loft at Dock 580 will become Post 4 at North 4th Corridor, and Juniper will be renamed Revery at North 4th Corridor. Your COVID-19 Questions, Answered Local wedding professionals address common queries about wedding planning during a pandemic.
22
Even during a normal year, wedding planning can be a stressful, exhausting and downright overwhelming process. During the coronavirus pandemic, however, planning the big day has never felt more fraught. It’s one thing to agonize over cake and icing combinations; it’s quite another to worry about contact tracing if one of your guests falls ill. In search of guidance about the new normal, Columbus Weddings turned to local industry experts to answer a series of wedding-related questions you never thought you’d ask.
and safety. Remember this decision was made to ensure that no one becomes sick because of attending your wedding. Create an across-theboard rule for how you’re reducing the guest list—for example, keeping it to immediate family and the bridal party. This way uninvited guests won’t take your decision personally, and there are no hurt feelings. Most important: I recommend a personal touch by picking up the phone and reaching out to the guests who you will unfortunately no longer be able to accommodate. —Cathi Fallon, The Etiquette Institute of Ohio
We sent save-the-dates or extended verbal invitations, but now we need to reduce our guest count. How do we tell guests that they’re no longer invited without hurting their feelings? Let your guests know that this decision was very difficult, but after careful consideration it seems the best way to protect your guests’ health
We’ve decided to elope or do a small, family-only ceremony, with a more traditional reception in 2021 or 2022. What’s the best way to handle invitations? What we have been seeing lately is doing two sets of invitations and a much earlier save-thedate. The first set of invitations is just for those family members, [with] the actual ceremony

information and the reception information for next year. Then, at the same time, send out a more informative save-the-date. This can even include info about an intimate, immediate family ceremony and a link to witness it via Zoom if they so choose. This would also state that a formal invitation to the reception next year will be sent at a later date, and that you hope to see them then. When the next invitation comes out, it is just the information for the reception; there is no need to state anything about the actual ceremony, since it was mentioned in the save-the-date. —Jason Fletcher, Avant-Garde Impressions Standard etiquette dictates that guests should be invited to both the ceremony and reception, not one or the other—but standard etiquette can be quite challenging these days. In this scenario, now called a “minimony,” we would suggest the couple send a heartfelt announcement following the ceremony announcing that they have been married and will be hosting a more traditional celebration in the future. —Margaret Lydy-Meeker, On Paper

Ameira and Davy Staudt and their dog, Archer, at their post-elopement photo shoot in Lancaster
The Final Detail Ameira and Davy Staudt’s intimate wedding was canceled due to COVID-19, but a post-elopement photo shoot made the marriage feel official.
Their story began at work. Staff at Mark Wahlberg Chevrolet were celebrating two co-workers’ birthdays: the receptionist and Ameira Martin. “Her boyfriend had gotten her a lot of things and I said, ‘Oh, that must be nice’” says Ameira. Davy Staudt, who also worked with them, was intrigued. “You don’t have a boyfriend?” he asked her. “When he said that, I knew he was hitting on me,” says Ameira—now Ameira Staudt—laughing about it today. Davy laughs, too. “She’s just so beautiful, and you could tell how sweet she was without talking to her that much,” he says. “Most people say don’t [date at work],” Ameira says, “but it worked out for us.” A Change of Plans Before COVID-19, the couple had planned to wed in a small gathering in Davy’s mother’s 24

backyard—just close family and friends. The couple liked the property’s abundance of trees and intimate setting. “We never wanted anything big,” Davy says. Then the pandemic hit, and their plans changed. “It honestly gave me the biggest anxiety ever, trying to plan all of this stuff,” says Ameira. “And we [couldn’t] even set a date [for] a later time, because who knows when this is going to be over?” Given the uncertainty and risk of keeping the original plan, they moved ahead on a new path. “We didn’t want to push it back,” says Ameira. “The most important part was that we got married,” Davy adds. “Neither of us cared about having anything big. [The ceremony] was mostly for our family, for their sake.” They got married with little fanfare on May 13, first picking up their marriage license at the court-

house and then exchanging rings before an officiant they found through Google. Still, they wanted something more to commemorate the occasion. Making It Official Photographer Gabby Sutherland, who’s been covering weddings as Gabriella Sutherland Photography since 2015, gave them the addition they wanted. She encouraged the couple to do a small photo shoot, even though their nuptials had come and gone. Following an elopement with professional photos is “a great way to cut costs and have a more chill wedding,” Sutherland says. For the Staudts, Sutherland suggested an early September shoot at Cheers Chalet in Lancaster. “We weren’t positive where we wanted to go,” Davy says. “But she sent us some locations, and this one had a little cabin down by the water with lots of trees.” The only two people on the guest list: their moms. “My mom was living in Canal Winchester, but she [recently] moved to Florida,” Ameira says. “That was a really special thing. She got to see that before she left. I think we would have regretted not having [our moms] there.”
During the shoot, Sutherland says the Staudts were laid-back despite a little unexpected exploring. “Any couple that’s willing to take a golf cart to go up the hill and find what we can find ... is willing to do anything for the photos,” she says. “I love the woods—all the greenery,” Ameira says. She laughs about the “keepsakes” that she accumulated: branches and leaves that got stuck in her David’s Bridal dress.
• Comfortable, elegant setting • Groups of up to 200 people • Beautiful gazebo for the perfect outdoor setting
The photo session also incorporated the couple’s dog, Archer. “We got him together, and he’s like a child to us,” says Ameira. Sutherland, who loves dogs, says photographing Archer was no problem. “I only needed him to look at me for two seconds to snap the picture.” They lured him with treats. Photos of the rings and other details rounded out the shoot. “With the photos, with me being in my dress, it felt so much more real,” says Ameira. “I had more feeling and emotion [at the shoot] than when we actually got married.” Adding to that emotion was capturing the moment Davy first saw Ameira in her gown. She was set on re-creating the oftphotographed first look after missing out on it at their elopement. “As soon as I saw him, I started bawling my eyes out. He truly is everything I’ve ever dreamed of,” Ameira says. Skipping the details of a traditional wedding—a first look, a formal ceremony and so much more—made the marriage feel somehow unofficial, Davy says. “It still felt like it hadn’t happened. But when we got our pictures taken … that’s when it felt like, ‘OK, now we’re good.’” «

Virtual Vows Livestreamed weddings can help you safely share your big day with loved ones.
For many couples this year, the big day wasn’t quite as big as they’d hoped. As the COVID-19 pandemic drags on, couples hosting micro-weddings have turned to livestreaming as a way to make sure their extended network of friends and family are still included. Although it may seem as simple as propping up a tablet and turning on Facebook Live, livestreaming a wedding is best left to the professionals. Horror stories abound of would-be virtual guests not knowing whose Facebook profile is hosting the livestream or being unable to find the Zoom link as couples muddle through the logistics of setting up video amid the other chaos of a wedding day. Julie Hedrick, co-founder of Blue Skies HD Video and Film Productions, and Josh Staley of Josh Staley Productions are two Central Ohio vendors who offer wedding livestreaming services, albeit with very different approaches. They weighed in so couples can learn what to expect from a virtual ceremony and how to choose the streaming method that’s right for them. “Do a livestream if you have a large amount of guests who can’t be there, or do a livestream if you just want to go ahead and get married and save the big reception for when all the COVID restrictions 26
COLUMBUS WEDDINGS SPRING/SUMMER 2021
are lifted,” Staley says. He expects livestreaming to be common even after the pandemic for those who can’t make it to the ceremony due to concerns about health or travel expenses. Hedrick, on the other hand, is more critical of livestreaming, seeing it as merely a necessity of the times. “Is it safer? Absolutely. Is it as special? Probably not,” Hedrick says. “I think, ideally, everyone wants pre-pandemic [circumstances], but I’m not sure we’re returning to that world anytime soon. So livestreaming is probably the next best option.” Both agree that livestreaming can be an unreliable technology. Between dependence on a stable internet connection and the inability to edit a live feed, couples should manage their expectations—don’t look for drone shots, gyrostabilized cameras, color correction or audio mixing here. What is lost in polish is gained in accessibility. Both Josh Staley Productions and Blue Skies can run a private stream on any platform a couple prefers, and the video is left online indefinitely after the event for loved ones who may not have been able to catch it live.

Staley, whose business is primarily focused on DJing, embraces the raw portrayal of a livestream, citing the good memories that can come from mishaps. Hedrick is less likely to suggest a stream. Her team, composed mostly of veteran TV broadcasters, can edit and deliver a “quick-flip,” fully edited wedding video in less than 24 hours, which she often recommends over a livestream. Staley and Hedrick’s differing philosophies on livestreams are reflected in the services they provide. Staley’s livestreams are fairly standardized, with high-end audio equipment and three cameras to cut between for the best possible angle. All the equipment is hooked up to a cellular modem, allowing his setup to stream smooth 720p video and audio from nearly anywhere, with a higher quality version posted online after the event. “You want to get married in the middle of the woods? I can go out there with that device and one camera plugged in, and we can do it,” Staley says. Livestreaming a weekday ceremony runs $499, a weekend ceremony is $999, and an entire day (ceremony and reception) costs $1,499. Josh Staley Productions also offers teleconference receptions, where groups of guests can be separated into “tables” that the newlyweds greet individually, avoiding a jumbled 100-person conversation. Blue Skies takes an individualized approach, offering custom camera setups with robotics and audio design to tailor the stream to any wedding. The company also aims for a full HD streaming experience. That said, the setup requires a wired ethernet connection or an extremely strong Wi-Fi signal, limiting the venues where it can provide the service. This tailored approach lends to a wider price range. Added to the regular video package, which usually costs anywhere between $1,500 and $5,000, a Saturday livestream can run from $800 up to $1,200. Despite their differences, both vendors emphasize customer service. Hedrick and Staley each stress the importance of flexibility at a time when life is dictated by the ebbs and flows of viral spread. Hedrick says the biggest benefit of contracting a pro for your wedding livestream is assurance that they can handle any issue that comes their way; you won’t have to worry about Uncle Bob frantically running around, asking for the Wi-Fi password or an iPad charger, as you share your first kiss. “That’s what you get with a professional,” she says. “[Any problem is] just magically fixed.” «

h c n bru Thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, couples are discovering that there’s more to a wedding than Saturday night dinner and dancing. Couples rescheduling their 2020 events into 2021 means that the most desirable weekend evenings are booking up fast, so those looking to get a specific date may want to consider a late morning or early afternoon celebration instead, says wedding planner Dana Watts of Thyme & Details. This summer, Watts worked with photo shoot hosts Broc and Alexa Pickering, of Broc and Alexa Photography, to create a scene sure to inspire.

Hailey Fitzpatrick & Alex Schnese BY PETER TONGUETTE | PHOTOS BY KISMET VISUALS About five years ago, Hailey and Alex Schnese had an introduction worthy of a classic sitcom: Their respective roommates set them up. “They introduced us,” Hailey says. “They were like, fingers crossed—hoping it would work out for themselves as much as for us, I think.” Alex was sure about the relationship early on, but, recognizing in himself a tendency to rush into things, he held off on proposing for about two years. By that time, not only had the couple nurtured each other’s interests, but they had purchased a golden retriever, Rosie, who would find herself with a role in Alex’s proposal. “I had made Hailey’s favorite dinner that night and then had gotten flowers earlier that day,” says Alex. “She had a stressful week, so everything at this point seemed on par.” Then Alex presented a gift to Hailey: a picture book he had made, celebrating one year since Rosie had joined their home. On the last page was a drawing of a ring. Alex was soon on one knee. Yet, six weeks before the Grandview couple’s wedding, Alex broke his ankle while participating in an adultleague hockey game. “On the ice, the very first thing I said was, ‘I’m in so much trouble,’” Alex says. The injury 48

required surgery, and Alex was in a cast until two days before the wedding. The couple learned in 2019 what many newlyweds are finding out now, during the pandemic: Even if a wedding is different than what was first envisioned, it still can be meaningful and magical. Alex got through the ceremony wearing a boot and relying on a knee scooter, and the overall vibe was just as the couple hoped: natural and not too formal. The reception’s 180 guests enjoyed food that reflected the couple’s personalities: Alex’s family's Wisconsin roots were honored with a huge cheese plate, and, instead of a wedding cake, the couple served Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams. Most importantly, everyone had a great time—even the groom, who couldn’t get around quite as easily as he would have hoped. “I wanted it to be a party that no one wanted to leave, and that’s exactly how it was,” Alex says. Adds Hailey: “Everything still was perfect—it didn’t take away from the experience at all.” The final twist in Hailey and Alex’s love story? Their former roommates not only served as a bridesmaid and groomsman; they married each other not long after. “We were both in their wedding as well,” Hailey says. «

Katie Martin & Jessica Morrison BY RYLAN LEE PHOTOS BY AMY ANN PHOTOGRAPHY There couldn’t be a more modern-day, fairy-tale romance than that of Jessica and Katie Morrison. It all began on Facebook. In 2008, Katie decided to create a safe-haven Facebook group for local gay women named Lesbians of Ohio. A few years later, Jessica requested to join. “I definitely looked through your profile a bit more than other people,” Katie admits to Jessica, “and it’s a big group.” Jessica, too, slowly became smitten with Katie after reading her posts in the group. Finally, the pair got to talking on Katie’s post about modern-day families, a topic close to home for Jessica, who adopted her biological niece, Esme, at birth. And it wasn’t long after bonding over the topic that Katie jokingly posted a meme about being single. Jessica saw her chance. “In my entire life, I’ve never been the one to make the move,” Jessica says. This time, she did. Things easily fell into place for the couple after their first date at the dog park. Their dogs, who graciously accepted roles as dogs of honor at their wedding, were also a happy pair, and Esme, then 6, requested Katie and Jessica marry within three weeks of meeting Katie. “[Katie and Esme] are so similar, and they are so bonded. I’m just the luckiest person ever,” Jessica says. Jessica knew fairly quickly that she wanted to propose and had planned to wait until a full year after their first date. But, with the encouragement of her family and friends, she decided to speed things up. Some four months earlier than planned, on Christmas morning 2019, she planned a scavenger hunt that led Katie to the ring as well as a letter from Esme asking her to be her “forever mama.” The couple quickly planned their wedding for the following year. When the coronavirus pandemic hit and government restrictions came, the two deliberated on whether to postpone the wedding. But thanks to an outpouring of help from friends and having already booked an outdoor venue—The Barn at Heather Glen—they decided to keep their original date and begin their married life as soon as possible. The day was filled with special moments, from having to eat their falling cake before dinner to now-7year-old Esme’s touching speech about her love for Katie. And although COVID-19 dampened their honeymoon plans, they still found a positive spin. “At this point, our honeymoon is going to be end up being a five-year anniversary [trip],” Katie laughs. « SPRING/SUMMER 2021 COLUMBUS WEDDINGS

Sarah Won & Ian Coldiron BY PETER TONGUETTE | PHOTOS BY ERICA KAY PHOTOGRAPHY If there was ever a year when a couple might mull calling off a wedding, it would be this one. The coronavirus pandemic has necessitated changes small and large to such celebrations, from fewer guests to copious quantities of masks. In the run-up to their planned September wedding, Sarah and Ian Coldiron weighed the pros and the cons. “Ian and I talked several times about wanting to cancel,” says Sarah, a teacher at Dublin Scioto High School. She worried about their loved ones falling ill. Ian was more bullish. “At one point, I said, ‘Sarah, we’re so close ... to this mountain, we might as well just see it through,’” he recalls. In the end, the couple decided that COVID-19 was not going to displace their big day. “We ended up going through with the original date—Sept. 26,” Sarah says. “It was at COSI—outdoors, both ceremony and reception.” Not that there weren’t considerable revisions to Sarah and Ian’s original plans. To enforce social distancing, they increased the number of tables and reduced the number of guests seated at each. “We had to order a lot of masks, and then we had to individually wrap them,” says Sarah, who also had hand sanitizer bottles on hand as well as colored wristbands to indicate a guest’s comfort level when it came to contact. Since the couple always envisioned a smaller wedding, they were comfortable with 52

the final guest count of 114 (down from the 140 guests they originally anticipated). Other elements of the ceremony were unaffected by current events, including the couple’s song selections. “We wanted people to feel [the] story of our relationship,” Sarah says. For example, for her processional, Sarah selected Lady Gaga’s “Shallow,” which the couple—devoted weekly moviegoers—first heard in the 2018 remake of “A Star Is Born,” in which the singer played the lead role. “That was the first movie that we saw together ... where [we] actually cried together,” she says. The first dance took place to the sounds of Jack Johnson’s “Better Together,” which the couple had danced to one night while cooking together in their kitchen. “We were like, ‘Oh my God, this has to be our first dance,’” she says. The couple wrote their own vows. Looking back on the day, neither Sarah nor Ian regrets proceeding with a wedding in the midst of a pandemic. The experience was, to say the least, unforgettable. “I said to Ian, ‘No matter if we’re 50, or when we’re 80 [or] 90 ... the fact that it was during a pandemic will help us always remember what year it was,’” Sarah says. Ian calls the ceremony a salve during stressful times. “Love will prevail,” he says. “Everyone just had a great time, and no one really thought about COVID-19 that night.” «

Hannah Schumick and Eric Young BY NICHOLAS YOUNGBLOOD PHOTOS BY ASHLEY WALLACE PHOTOGRAPHY After a two-year engagement and endless preparation, the time had come for Hannah and Eric Young’s wedding. Then, as was the case for so many weddings in 2020, COVID-19 threw a wrench into all their plans. “It was one of the most difficult times for both of us,” Eric says. “It was really challenging for us to go through as a couple, but I would always remind Hannah that if we can get through this, we can get through anything.” This wasn’t the newlyweds’ first time changing plans on the fly. The pair met in 2015 at Union Café through mutual friends. Three weeks later, Hannah messaged Eric asking if he wanted to see her again that night. Despite being in Cincinnati, moments away from watching The Black Keys headline Bunbury Music Festival, he agreed and made a beeline back to Columbus. During a third anniversary trip to Washington, D.C., he similarly winged his proposal at the Lincoln Memorial, enlisting a fellow tourist to snap a photo while he got down on one knee, and it couldn’t have worked out more perfectly. Still, the couple had never faced anything quite like a pandemic. As the wedding date approached, sacrifices had to be made. The already-small guest list dwindled from 80 down to 40, Eric canceled his bachelor party, and contact-intensive traditions like the bouquet toss seemed impossible. But as Eric said in his vows on the big day, “Love isn’t canceled.” Hannah and Eric came up with creative workarounds that kept the spirit alive. “Everybody still had a really good time,” Hannah says. “The changes weren’t so drastic that it made the day any less special.” The couple insisted on masks for all their guests and carefully arranged seating to keep social distance. They let guests choose a color-coded wristband that indicated their comfort with personal contact and handed out individualized desserts in lieu of a single cake. Their most creative solution allowed them to save the bouquet toss. Instead of throwing the flowers into a tightly packed group, Hannah assigned single guests a number and rolled a giant 20-sided die—a nod to the couple’s love for Dungeons & Dragons—to determine the winner. Ultimately, Hannah and Eric say working as a team made the whole event possible, even in a pandemic. “As long as [she] and I are on the same page—regardless of the chatter outside—it doesn’t matter,” Eric says. “It’s our day.” « SPRING/SUMMER 2021 COLUMBUS WEDDINGS

Alekhya Dega & Justin Shum BY PETER TONGUETTE | PHOTOS BY STYLE & STORY When they first embarked on their relationship, Alekhya and Justin Shum bonded over touchdowns, extra points and end-zone celebrations. Like so many Central Ohioans, they are fans of the Ohio State University Buckeyes. “We spent a lot of our friendship watching Ohio State football, and it just developed more into a relationship as months progressed,” says Alekhya, a native of Dublin who was introduced to Justin in February of 2015. “Especially at the beginning, it was like: ‘Hey, we’ll just hang out during the next game and get together,’” says Justin, who grew up in Upper Arlington and attended OSU. “We’re both deeply rooted with Ohio State football and the culture that comes with it,” Alekhya says. When the couple set their wedding date, Alekhya’s first priority was to identify a date compatible with the couple’s astrology for their Hindu ceremony; she landed on Oct. 5, 2019. Alekhya then checked the OSU football schedule and discovered, to her chagrin, that the Buckeyes were to face off against Michigan State. At first, Alekhya was not too alarmed. “Normally, this is a noon game or a 3:30 game—not a big deal,” she says. But then the game was designated as homecoming and scheduled to take place at night. “Usually, for Indian weddings, the morning is the ceremony and then there’s a break, and then the evening is 56

a reception,” Alekhya says. “I knew the reception time was going to hit exactly at game time.” A Big 10 foe, homecoming, a night game—it spelled trouble. Although Alekhya and Justin were concerned that guests from overseas—she had family in India, he in Hong Kong— would have trouble finding hotel rooms, they decided to proceed with the wedding at Downtown’s Hyatt Regency. The traditional, multiday celebration emphasized Alekhya’s Hindu background, kicking off Thursday with a mehndi ceremony featuring the application of henna body art. A Friday morning mass, to embrace Justin’s Catholic roots, preceded the main festivities on Saturday. Amid the hubbub, the couple found time for some quiet moments. “At the reception, I had asked the wedding planner: ‘I would like 15 minutes in a room alone where both of us can just have dinner together,’ ” Alekhya says. Of course, OSU references could be found in the superfans’ ceremony. In his vows, Justin spoke about themes of leadership and love that he had encountered in former OSU coach Urban Meyer’s book, “Above the Line.” Alekhya and Justin were glad they went ahead as planned. After all, there will be plenty more OSU-Michigan State matchups. “At the end of the day, we looked at it like: ‘Football comes and goes every year, but you get married once,’” Alekhya says. «

Amy Rico & Austin Pitts BY EMMA FRANKART HENTERLY PHOTOS BY OH DEER PHOTOGRAPHY Amy and Austin Pitts always knew they wanted a small wedding. The high school sweethearts have an affinity for travel and, after Austin proposed during a trip to Aruba in early March, planned to have a destination wedding in Maui. Less than two weeks after they returned from Aruba, the state of Ohio was on a stay-home order to curb the spread of COVID-19. After dating for eight years, they weren’t keen on waiting to be able to travel to have their dream wedding. After some thought, they came up with the perfect Columbus destination. “Genoa Park and the Scioto Mile is where we went eight years ago to watch the fireworks, and that was the first time [Austin] said, ‘I love you,’ ” Amy says. “I was like, if we can’t do it [in Hawaii], let’s do it in our favorite place, and let’s just have a small ceremony with our family and a couple of friends.” A small reception for about 80 guests at Scioto Grove Metro Park, catered by Condado Tacos, was planned to follow. But as the pandemic wore on, it became clear that even the relatively small gathering wouldn’t be possible; because the park is not a catering or banquet hall, it does not qualify for the governor’s exemptions to the 10-person gathering rule. By July, Amy and Austin decided to scrap that idea, too, rescheduling the party for June 26, 2021—which just happens to be Amy’s grandparents’ anniversary. (The Pitts also plan to visit Hawaii for a combination honeymoon, vow renewal and one-year anniversary trip.) The wedding itself, however, wasn’t about to move. “We could have gotten married at City Hall, and I wouldn’t care, as long as I got married to Austin,” Amy says. “It’s not about the party, and it’s not about the Instagram stories you’re going to post, or anything like that. It’s really about who you want to spend the rest of your life with.” The pair began making arrangements for a socially distant, COVID-compliant minimony: They curated a small guest list of close family and friends, Amy’s brother got ordained to officiate, outfit-matching masks were ordered. On the big day, guests stood well apart in family groups as the pair exchanged vows on the bank of the Scioto River with the Columbus skyline in the background. After, the Pitts celebrated with three dinners at Condado Tacos on three consecutive nights: one with friends, one with Amy’s family and one with Austin’s family. “I don’t think there was anything I’d want to change or do differently,” Amy says. “It was perfect.” « 58

Pro Tip
The best advice we can give when planning a wedding-day timeline is to add cushion time! Sometimes the simplest things can take an extra 20 minutes and then, all of a sudden, the whole morning is thrown off. ... Be sure to also think about the travel time and traffic to and from your getting-ready location and your venue. —Kristin Gibson, 614 Wedding Photography

JAMIE & JEFF GUYNES | Jan. 18, 2020 Jamie’s grandfather built the ceremony backdrop and co-officiated at Vue Columbus; he also built elements of the reception centerpieces. The most memorable thing about the big day, Jamie says, was “being surrounded by and able to celebrate with our family and friends.”

EILEEN & MATTHIEU MCLEAN | March 14, 2020 Much of the McLeans’ relationship before their marriage took place long-distance, with Eileen living in Columbus and Matthieu in Canada; the pair met while he was in town visiting family. They had to juggle wedding planning with Matthieu’s immigration process, “which added a lot more planning than usual,” Eileen says.

MEREDITH & NICK HELFFERICH | Aug. 22, 2020 Nick proposed to Meredith, then a cruise ship performer touring Europe, atop a Norwegian mountain, depicted above. Their wedding and reception at the Westin Great Southern Columbus featured a song that Meredith wrote for Nick, performed by two of her colleagues. “It was absolutely magical,” Meredith says. “I made Nick cry with this song, and Nick never cries!”
