HOWARD SMITH

WILSON BOHANNAN LOCK COMPANY

Mr. Howard Smith was born in Dayton, Ohio and earned a bachelor's degree in history with a minor in business from Hillsdale College. He also holds an MBA from Ashland University and spent four years in the United States Coast Guard. Howard started working for the Wilson Bohannan Lock Company in 1973 in the Accounting Department. He became its President in 1995. His connection to the family business was through his late wife, Pamela Norris Smith, who was the great-great granddaughter of Wilson Bohannan (who founded the company in 1860 in Brooklyn, New York). Pam’s grandfather, Wilson Bohannan Tway, moved the company to Marion, Ohio in 1926. The company will be celebrating 160 years in 2020 and currently is in it’s 7th generation of ownership with Howard and Pam’s daughters Patricia (Trish) Kozlik and Sarah Rassell helping run the business. Since his inception as its President in 1995, the company has more than doubled its sales. Prior to 1995, they outsourced all the manufacturing. Today, Wilson Bohannan is totally integrated, manufacturing and assembling all products in house. Wilson Bohannan takes pride in being 100% American Made. Howard has had the company continuously purchase new machinery and equipment to improve efficiencies and processes, so they can compete internationally. Wilson Bohannan strives to meet the ever-growing needs of its customer base by adding new locking devices to the growing list of products and is recognized as crafting some of the finest locking products made in the world. Wilson Bohannan is the oldest family-owned lock manufacturing business in America and one of the oldest in the world, and they have stayed strong to their core values. Since becoming President in 1995, Howard has worked to develop a succession plan for the next generation. He has developed a team of younger managers to help support his daughters and continue the legacy of Wilson Bohannan to the 7th generation. Howard has made many personal achievements throughout his career. In 2018, he was inducted into the American Lock Collectors Hall of Fame. He also has been involved in boards inside and outside of his community. Outside of Marion, he has been a member of Chief Executive Boards International for over 25 years.

Inside of Marion, Howard believes in giving back to his community by serving on many boards over the course of his 46 years at WB. He believes Ohio is one of the best places to do business in America. He states, “The attitude and work ethic that is evident from our state culture is truly beneficial to the success of our company.” Howard has been a large part of the success of his soon to be 160-year-old family-owned business. His dream is that one day his grandchildren will be the 8th generation to work and run the Wilson Bohannan Lock Company.

OUTSTANDING SERVICE

to the Conway Center for Family Business Thaddeus has been a part of the Center since its founding. He has graciously provided his time and expertise to our Peer Group programs as a facilitator. He spearheaded the Next Generation Leaders program, which has seen over 50 next gens develop their strengths and understanding of what it takes to run a family-owned business, and adds his organizational psychology insight at our Succession Planning peer group. We appreciate Dr. O’Brien’s dedication and service to the Conway Center and to family-owned businesses in Central Ohio.

There’s something really unique and powerful about being able to be in a place like the Conway Center where you make lasting friendships. Beyond that you have trust and you know that you can share vulnerability of ‘What is it like to grapple with this part of being a family-owned business?’ or ‘What’s it like to look at succession and who should rule?’ and, ‘How will we determine those key things?’ Jamie Richardson White Castle

So, I would encourage anyone who’s thinking about membership at the Center to jump in with both feet.”
