“From early on, I preserved and illustrated a person’s identity with paint. Now with makeup, I help define a woman’s identity by creating the perfect complexion, starting with an exact color match for her foundation.”

Presenting a Special Spotlight on Local Business Owner, Jaclyn Peresetsky

Some people are born with a silver spoon in their mouths.

Jaclyn Peresetsky (artist, spa owner and esthetician)

was born with an artist’s brush in her hand.

-Jaclyn Peresetsky

Face Artistry

From Paint Brush to Makeup Brush

Even as a young girl, Jaclyn was captivated by color, makeup all things beautiful. This innate passion lead Jaclyn to paint portraits to pay for her advanced education at the prestigious Columbus College of Art and Design. During this time, she fell in love with faces. As she painted complexions, Jaclyn found it nearly effortless to identify even the slightest tonal changes in the skin that other skilled artists missed. This level of fine detail forced her to manipulate color on and off the canvas to create the perfect skin tone for each client which made them look flawless.

Capitalizing on her love of art, color and the beauty industry Jaclyn became an esteemed esthetician and spa owner of Skin Perfect in Worthington, OH. Her gifts as an artist coupled with her knowledge of color theory and esthetics gracefully transitioned from paint brush to makeup brush. Through her makeup brush, Jaclyn’s genius was unleashed and it was clear: Jaclyn is uniquely positioned to bring out the best “self portrait” for any woman. She is now developing an innovative color identification system, HVC technology, which will revolutionize the way women view makeup. And that’s what her clients craved: High-quality custom makeup colors.

Bingo

The new makeup line called

was born. Through Identity, Jaclyn helps women finally find their perfect colors for makeup, eliminating all the guesswork and making them look flawless.

Look who’s Talking Jaclyn is gaining popularity as the go-to person for custom makeup and color analysis.

Good Day Columbus, a Fox affiliate asked Jaclyn to discuss color analysis: http://www.youtube.com watch?v=TQf58rErC3U

Fox and ABC affiliates have requested Jaclyn multiple times

“She’s happy when her jewelry comes from the Diamond Cellar. The fact that they have the best prices, means I’m happy buying it there.”

To make sure we have the very best prices, we shop the competition. We recently made purchases at four national jewelry stores in Columbus, and in each case we beat their prices on the same jewelry item. We were anywhere from 18 to 34 percent less expensive.

Quality for quality, the best price anywhere.

Editor’s Note

Sparkly moments

S

he was sitting across from me at Northstar Café, a worldly young woman bubbling with teenage exuberance as she talked a mile a minute about ballet school and friends and curfews and travels. But there are hard parts, too, of giving up life as Emma Hawes knew it to move far from home and pursue a dream—demanding instructors, aching muscles, homesick tears. Why, then, is it worth it? When I asked the question, Emma—for the first time in our conversation—paused. She looked down, not into her colorful salad, but into a memory that was inevitably flashing with visions of bleeding toes and ice baths and bedtimes without a momma to hug. She turned her eyes upward, thoughtfully. “The gratification of being on stage.” There was no arrogance in her voice, just joy. “I think everyone has that—something that gives them the best feeling in the world,” she continued. “I don’t know how to describe it, except that I feel like I’m sparkly.” Emma’s mother, Jane—a friend of mine who wrote a story for this issue about letting her daughter leave home for boarding school—listened intently. And then, just as her daughter finished, Jane’s whole body relaxed—satisfied, knowing. I’m certain she wishes everyone who has ever judged her decision to send Emma away could have seen her baby girl’s face at that instant. Because isn’t that what life is about—finding those moments that make us feel sparkly? I have photos on my desk to remind me as much. In one, my stepson Mitch is suspended upside down in mid-air between a swing and a lake, his arms and legs spread wide. In another, my stepson Kyle is wearing his green football jersey and holding a Gatorade cooler, laughing so hard his eyes are almost closed, having just drenched Coach Dad after a win. Above that is

24

one of my stepdaughter Izzy celebrating a soccer goal, blond hair flapping in her face, fists clenched and mouth open, screaming in delight. Another shows my husband and I at the top of New Hampshire’s Mount Washington after a steep, rocky 8.4-mile ascent. We are sweaty and exhausted and beaming. And then there’s the glossy of baby Cooper in all his nearly naked glory, Daddy’s hands guiding him, wobbling toward Momma, blue eyes gleeful, a tiny tongue wagging from his toothless grin, so proud to have taken a step. When days seem too long and too busy and too stressful, I sometimes need to remind myself—don’t we all?—of the point. Someone once told me that in life, she wants only one thing: a house filled with love. It’s an exceptionally simple, beautiful goal, isn’t it? I hope each day that every decision I make aims to do the same. One way we can do that is to seek—and truly inhale—those moments of sparkly. Know what they are, map out how to get there and go toward them. Put the people you care for in the position to feel them. And give yourself permission to feel them, too.

The Bowler hat was invented in 1850 as a type of hard hat for gamekeepers on large estates. By 1912, the bowler hat had been transformed into an essential element of dress for men from all walks of life. The felt bowler was one of the most fashionable styles then and has retained its popularity. This bowler bat was recovered in 1993.

A weighted pivot ensured that this silver lamp would remain upright in all weather. For those passengers who wished to read in bed, an eye cast into the base of the lamp allowed for convenient placement upon a hook on the wall. This gimbal lamp, recovered in 1987,

Hot meals make the emergency shelter feel more like home, but cooking breakfast, lunch and dinner for as many as 50 homeless families would be daunting without volunteers. “We don’t turn anyone away,” said Jessica Wichtman, the center’s community relations and volunteer manager. Hosts are needed to prepare, serve and clean up meals at the center, located at 900 Harvey Ct. on Columbus’ North Side. A Leg Up on

VARICOSE VEINS

Randall W. Franz, MD, FACS, RVT

If prominent leg veins are causing you to contemplate the warmer months ahead with a certain amount of hesitation, you’re not alone. The National Library of Medicine reports that problem veins develop in half the population over the age of 50, and are more common among women.

T

hose “road maps” on your legs aren’t just unsightly—they’re unhealthy, and they put you at risk for a host of medical problems. They develop when the tiny valves inside the leg veins fail to close properly, allowing blood to flow backward and pool, engorging the veins and causing the bulging, discolored appearance that makes so many people self-conscious.

Expert help Don’t let varicose veins progress. Seek help from the area’s recognized leaders in vascular health, Central Ohio Vascular Services. At this premier practice, highly qualified and extensively trained vascular surgeons make use of advanced venous duplexing technology to identify the source of your venous problems. They then carefully select the best procedure for bringing relief for your problem veins.

Specialized approach If the problem lies in the greater saphenous vein, a minimally invasive office procedure is used to deliver laser energy to the walls of the problem vessel, gently collapsing it. Blood © 2009 Advent Media Group

naturally reroutes to healthier veins. When the problem is with one of the lesser leg veins, transilluminated powered phlebectomy, a gentle surgical outpatient procedure, may be employed to remove the diseased vein through a series of small incisions. “We use the TriVex™ system for this procedure,” informs board-certified vascular surgeon Randall W. Franz, MD, FACS, RVT, “an advanced method that allows us to place fewer incisions and remove the problem vein in less time than was possible with earlier methods. “We are unique in our level of expertise with TriVex™,” says Dr. Franz. “It delivers quicker recovery times and better cosmetic results for our patients.” Another procedure, one used to treat tiny, superficial veins that appear close to the surface of the skin, is sclerotherapy. Performed in the office, a series of fine-needle injections gradually cause the spider veins to disappear. “Patients shouldn’t suffer with varicose veins,” emphasizes Dr. Franz. “We look forward to putting our specialized training to work for them in relieving pain and restoring a more attractive appearance to their legs.”

Rhonda Fraas forged her way through cable company ranks. Now, the Time Warner executive successfully juggles career, community and family

s a young associate at a cable provider in Kentucky, Rhonda Fraas struggled to convince her employers that she had the skills to handle more responsibility. “This was back in a time when women were new to the office,” Fraas said of the early ’80s. “People were struggling with women’s roles and how they viewed you. You were dealing with developing the credibility to be given the work.” So she dug in and learned everything she could about every aspect of the business. And at the end of each day, Fraas—who had taken the cable job soon after high school—traded one kind of learning for another and headed to night classes at Sullivan Junior College. While she didn’t finish her degree, she clearly impressed her bosses.

“I always went back on what my mother said: ‘You can do anything you want.’ ” And Fraas has. She stayed in the cable world, leaving Kentucky for Austin, Texas; jumping from there to Mobile, Ala.; and eventually landing in Columbus—her home for the past 23 years. At each level, she convinced higher-ups that she could not only handle more, but that she could thrive under pressure and inspire those around her to do the same. (She also returned to school in the late ’90s and completed an executive education program at Northwestern University.) Today, she’s responsible for serving Time Warner Cable’s roughly 3 million residential customers scattered across seven Midwestern states, including Ohio. “Rhonda has a very caring heart,” said Mary Jo Green, who is Time Warner’s regional vice president and has worked with Fraas for more than 16 years. “First and foremost she’s concerned about people, whether they’re people that she works with, or customers, or people who work on the causes she supports.” Green remembers a period during the mid ’90s when cable technology was going through changes that unsettled many customers. “My office was right outside the call center,” Green said. “I could hear these customer service reps taking these calls all day from people who were upset and unhappy. And the reps were still happy. They loved their jobs. I think that reflected a lot on Rhonda and the job that

“It’s interesting to raise young kids at my age. It keeps you young. I have better skills to raise them than when I was younger.” –Rhonda Fraas she did.” Fraas’ ability to lead in times of adversity has made her an appreciated and respected president of the board of Action for Children, a resource and referral agency that matches parents with quality childcare, early-learning programs and other services. Carole Watkins, the most recent past president of the same board and the chief human

resource officer at Cardinal Health, credits Fraas with successfully guiding the organization through a difficult financial environment for nonprofits. “Rhonda, as president, served as a tremendous stabilizing force for the agency,” Watkins said. She actually took an interest in early-childhood issues watching her own employees, said Diane Bennett, Action for Children’s CEO. “She saw the need for not only quality childcare, but support for parents in their search and developing their own knowledge on how children grow and learn,” Bennett said. When she became a mother herself, she became even more passionate about children’s issues, Bennett added. “She is determined and generous and has provided strong leadership to keep this going,” Bennett said, “even in this slow down period.” Her own children, Henry, 8, and Evan, 6, inspired Fraas to do even more for kids. She also has joined the board of Flying Horse Farms, a camp in Mount Gilead for seriously ill children that is equipped and staffed to handle their medical conditions. The nonprofit camp allows the children to run obstacle courses, ride horses and swim, among other fun activities. In January, Fraas became the board chair. “The mission is so compelling,” Fraas said. “They can’t go to a regular camp. They need medical oversight. … It’s a transforming life experience for them.” Fraas said she’s able to cultivate a demanding and successful career and give back civically because of the support of her husband, Charlie Fraas, who she met through friends and married 13 years ago. As an executive at Casto, Charlie Fraas has a notable career himself in commercial development. To juggle their many responsibilities, the pair set guidelines to keep the focus on family. If they go out on weekends, it’s only one night. And they try to not travel away from home more than two nights a week. “People talk about a work-life balance. It’s definitely a challenge,” Fraas said. “There’s no magic ingredient to get it all right.” But when you’re being pulled in several directions, Fraas advised, just put family first. “That’s what the world is all about,” she said.

This is precisely how the Columbus comedienne boils down life, in delicious, bitesized bits of wisdom—never a know-it-all, but always knowing. And always funny. She is a 58-year-old Irish redhead filled with vibrance and vigor and opinion, but balanced with thoughtfulness and compassion and grace. She is quirky and hilarious

I Photos by: Will Shilling and very, very deep. She’s a cheerleader for everyone, a stranger to no one, the type of woman who could lunch at a table with a 6-year-old, the President and someone’s drunk uncle—and assure that everyone not only got along, but also had a famous time. She’s the type of person people gush about but have difficulty describing, because she’s just so Patti. After a few attempts at bottling her into words, her

younger brother Rob finally comes up with a valiant attempt. “Every party, every time you go out, every restaurant, everywhere you go, she’s going to be the center of whatever situation,” he says. “And everybody goes happily along the way with her.” But perhaps longtime friend Debbie Phillips, an author and former Columbus newspaper reporter, says it best: “She’s really a force.”

“She’s the life of the party. I think she’s in her element (on stage). She loves being up there, and you can tell. She loves having fun. And the audience loves her. —Bridget Brown, Pat’s niece

Beating Cancer Pat Wynn Brown is clear about something: She did not start Hair Theater because she had cancer. But she did, indeed, have it. When the doctor told her she had melanoma—skin cancer—her first fear was losing her hair. Her second was death. In that order. Neither fear materialized, thanks to successful surgery (and probably the fact she confessed to a priest at age 7 that she had committed adultery after mistakenly seeing a Playboy cover with a naked lady under the counter at the grocery store). The ordeal did, however,

and their attachment to it—hit Pat like a ponytail whipping across the face. She wrote the first episode of Hair Theater, and in it, she and three other women told their life stories

reinforce the value she and most women put on their hair. It also inspired her to advocate for doctor checkups. She proudly shows the scar on her arm, for example, hoping strangers will ask about it so she can remind them to have their moles checked. And she asks audience members not to put off medical visits of any sort. Pat started the Hair Theater Wig Fund at The Columbus Foundation to help women and girls going through chemotherapy afford wigs and hats. The fund has helped beautify more than 645 women.

through the evolution of their hairdos. Women roared. Nearly 10 years later, Hair Theater—now a motivational one-woman show with several episodes, all tied to hair in

some way—is still wowing sold-out audiences. Pat has performed everything from a Catholic school girl episode, which includes adventures in Our Lady of Perpetually Glorious Hairdos High, to one called “Dude, Where’s My Hair?, which incorporates real-life children with cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Select shows are underwritten by corporate sponsors so that ticket proceeds can benefit Pat’s Hair Theater Wig Fund, which helps women and girls going through chemotherapy afford wigs and hats. Sometimes, Pat’s shows are open to the public; other times, groups from Columbus to California call her in for special events. But while she may be laugh-out-loud hilarious on stage with a giant bouffant wig and a ukulele, she might be even funnier on her back porch, sipping V8 and ranting about mothers who spend 10

minutes in the grocery line explaining to their 1-year-olds what trans fat is instead of just saying, “No, you can’t have a candy bar. “I’m like, ‘Shut the (bleep) up!’ Pat says, rolling her eyes. “I don’t know how she does it, says her friend Marian Hutson, the principal of Bishop Watterson High School. “She comes up with the statements that are so true to life, but with such a funny twist to it. Patti actually knows exactly how she does it—with the truth. The late writer Erma Bombeck (whose every-otheryear workshops feature Pat as a speaker) once said that she doesn’t write what’s funny, she writes the truth, because the truth is funny. Pat does the same. “The show—it is me out there, and I think people resonate with that, Pat says. “It’s maybe what they wanted to say but they couldn’t. It’s the honesty that makes it work.

Capital Couture Momma Culpa Highlights from Pat Wynn Brown’s book “Momma Culpa: One Mother Comes Clean and Makes Her Maternal Confession” l The tooth fairy did not skip our house that night because of an emergency stop at Children’s Hospital to visit a very sick little boy. We just forgot to put the dollar under your pillow. The fairy remembered you the next night, and I like to think that the imaginary boy got better and went home the next day. l Although I was emphatic about this, families ARE permitted to bake cut-out holiday cookies more than once every seven years. More frequent baking will not bring bad luck. l That comfort blanket you had so much trouble giving up is not in the Smithsonian as previously reported. I still have it and check on it often. l I should not have remained in attendance at your seventh grade basement dance party. My only greater regret is demonstrating the Shing-a-ling steps to your horrified friends. l Yes, I did make a bargain with God that I would become a missionary at the direst cesspool of human suffering if he would inspire you to ask that perfectly nice girl to the prom. God kept his end of the deal. I didn’t.

P

at’s best-kept secret is not altogether surprising if one knows much about creative types like her: She struggles with depression. It comes in waves, she says. She does not take medication to treat it, instead relying on a healthy diet and loads of exercise. She believes that cultivating happiness for others helps her, too. So she puts an enormously complex amount of work into her shows, writing and singing and revamping each performance for months in front of a full-length mirror in her upstairs home office. Performing Hair Theater, she says, is like exposing her soul. “It’s about hair, but it’s about hope,” she says. “And if you can hang onto hope, you can hang onto anything.” She should know, as this year has pelted her with an onslaught of sadness. Her brother-in-law died, as did a handful of other relatives. Two of the children who performed as part of “Dude, Where’s My Hair?” also passed. And her mother’s health is declining, meaning Pat must visit more, clean more, do more. Nonetheless, Pat worries about everyone else: actress Sandra Bullock (“I wouldn’t be able to come out of my house”), the Obamas (“I don’t know how they sleep at night with all they have to deal with”), and reality star Kate Gosselin (there’s too much here to explain), to name but a few. “I like to think of it,” Pat jokes, “as a public service.”

T

here are a many things that make Pat the girlfriend everyone wants to have. One, as her nieces will tell anyone, is that she’s just plain fun. On family vacations, she assures that the Fish Fairy visits daily, bringing trinkets

like sparkly purses and piggy banks. “And she never tells where the Fish Fairy lives or anything about the Fish Fairy,” says her 8-year-old niece, Erin. Another, as her husband will tell anyone, is the element of surprise. She will dance on tables (if she’s getting too old for this, she has not gotten that memo) and host Wiener World (during which she hangs up pictures of wiener dogs, cooks wieners and assigns seats so family members have to mix things up). “It’s something new and fresh all the time,” Steve says. “She always has something going on.” But perhaps most impor-

tantly of all, she listens, and she remembers, and she cares. She is the type of woman who, at age 21, fostered a baby girl for three months and misses her still. The type who flies a New Orleans flag in her yard not because she has any connection to the city, but because those people continue hurting, and she has not forgotten. The type who reads about people in the newspaper having a rough go at life and writes them letters. Because Pat Wynn Brown believes that you can change the world with 44 cents. And so one act of Patti at a time, she does.

hen Emma was 2, I started taking her to a Mommy and Me (or sometimes Daddy and Me) creative movement class at the Delaware Arts Castle. Her teacher, Jill Garlock, was a well-trained dancer, instructor and absolute genius with kids. One snowy winter day, when Emma was 3, we were the only people to show up for class, so she got her first private lesson. I sat on the side and watched as Jill, for the first time, taught Emma real ballet steps. Emma mimicked Jill beautifully. Then Jill turned on classical music. “Dance any way you want,” she instructed, “and just see what the music makes you do.” Emma listened for a moment, and then suddenly sprang to life, her arms and legs sweeping through the air in time to the music. It was like watching a teeny tiny professional dancer—that’s how beautifully she moved. Jill and I immediately turned to each other, and we both had tears in our eyes. When we left, Jill spoke quietly: “You have a dancer, Mom.” I didn’t know then what that would mean, how that would change and shape our lives. But I knew it was true. mma eventually graduated from the Arts Castle to a handful of Columbus dance schools that focused on ballet, the style she clearly loved most. By the time she was 11, though, we had heard enough predictions of future greatness that we decided we needed to get an honest, objective assessment. After a bit of research, we discovered that the closest world-class ballet training program was in Toronto. We took Emma to Canada’s National Ballet School to audition for their summer program. They had no reason to tell us anything but the truth. The audition for about 30 rising seventh graders was conducted in front of a panel of seven NBS faculty members. Parents were allowed, even encouraged, to sit in the rear of the dance studio during the hour-long class. At the end, invitations to the summer program would be extended to those selected. My sister Mary, who lives in Toronto with her Canadianborn husband, Eric, came with me. I remember distinctly a point in the class when all seven of the faculty members seemed to notice Emma at once. Their eyes locked on her—and suddenly, almost in unison, they relaxed and smiled. Mary grabbed my arm. “They saw her,” she whispered. Emma was one of the three students selected for admission. The inevitable, I knew, was on the horizon. Dancers who perform at the highest levels train like professional athletes to get there—and starting at a young age. I could give her up for a summer. But I needed longer to put the finishing touches on the wings all parents try building for their child.

be fulfilled in Columbus: She wanted to play Clara in BalletMet’s production of the Christmas-season classic “The Nutcracker.” She scored the part—and during the process convinced me she had the personality to deal with a life onstage. Most people probably think

of performers as being an excitable and mood-swingy bunch, but the reality is that those who have happy and healthy careers are pretty even-tempered. After Emma’s first performance as Clara, we fetched her from the stage door. “Did you see what hap-

pened?” she grinned. “With what?” I asked. My husband, Dick, chimed in: “You were holding the doll differently.” After the critical plot point where Clara’s feisty brother Fritz breaks the nutcracker doll, her godfather reassembles it, wrapping its jaw with his kerchief and handing it back to Clara before she dances with it. On this night, however, the adult dancer playing her godfather handed the doll to Emma with worry. “It’s still broken,” he whispered. “Good luck.” In other words, she had to hold it together while dancing with it. And she did. Since then, we’ve seen her keep her wits about her in other performances, but that was the first time it happened in such a big way. Between shuttling Emma to and from classes—and tending to our younger son as well— we spent the year training Emma for a more independent life, unbeknownst to her. We forced her to take better care of her bedroom, to make her own food on weekends, to fight her own battles at school and ballet. We prepared her. And we prepared ourselves.

The Journey

E

mma enrolled at NBS as a full-time student the next fall, to begin eighth

grade. Trust me when I say it was never our dream to send our daughter to a boarding school at age 13. This, however, is her life, and her dream. It’s a school where about 160 students from around the world live, study dance and take all their academic classes on one gorgeous campus in the heart of Toronto. They encourage critical thinking and global perspectives, and we’re pleased with all the reading and writing Emma’s had to do (she may beg to differ, but I think she knows she’s getting a topnotch education). Their curriculum also includes nutrition and cooking classes, as well as classes to explore what their post-dance careers might be. Students are reassessed each spring to see whether they will be invited back for the following year. When people discover our situation, some are critical. People seem to be OK with

extreme measures to train world-class athletes, but they feel differently about artists. I choose to focus on the people who say things like, “I know it must be hard, but what a wonderful opportunity you’re giving her!” It’s never been easy for any of us to be separated. Plenty of tears still get shed, even four years later. But the only time I almost pulled the plug on this adventure was after her first Christmas break. I drove her the seven hours back to Toronto and, just as I was about to leave her at the student residence, she began sobbing. We have always told her that all she ever has to do is tell us she’s done and we’ll bring her home, no questions asked. “Do you want to come home?” I asked, trying to hold back my own tears. She shook her head, still sobbing. Just like the Inuit Indians have 27 different words for “snow,” Emma has about 27 different types of crying. This was a type I had never seen, and I waited her out, not sure

Emma (showing off her juggling skills at home) has a lighthearted side that helps balance the Capital-Style.com July/August 2010 seriousness of dance

what to do. Slowly, she calmed down and assured me she’d be fine and that yes, she really did want to be there. Less than an hour later, I got a call from her sounding as perky and cheerful as ever. The next day, I relayed the story via e-mail to a veteran NBS mom. “The first return from Christmas break is always the worst,” she wrote. “They were home long enough to get back into the rhythm of their old ways, so it’s always jarring to go back to school. It’ll never be as bad as this one.” I wished someone had told me that before. Thankfully, the veteran mom was right, but what a heart-wrenching mommy moment that was. Also thankfully, I have family support for Emma in Toronto. My sister and her husband serve as (young, hip) surrogate parents to Emma. They take her to church every weekend and have taught her everything she knows about Thai food, sketch comedy and ice hockey. Without them there, I could not have sent her so far.

Here, Jane watches Emma and friends swim during a visit home. At right, Emma and NBS friends, including roommate Helen Clare Kinney of Texas (in red), visit their favorite pastry shop in Toronto. Below, Emma hugs Colin at his school

We’ve also kept good on our promise to see Emma at least once a month, which makes long-distance family life somewhat bearable. Her classes are in six-week blocks with one-week breaks between, and summer break is six weeks. If she visits home, she often takes the train to Windsor, and we drive her home from there. Or, we visit her. Plus, we talk every day. Sometimes twice. We also harass her via Facebook until she tells us to stop.

It’s quite difficult to parent your child from a distance. There are more than a few nights when I get off the phone with Emma and go straight upstairs for a hot bath and a cold beer.

D

uring Emma’s Grade 10 year, things started to gel in a truly humbling way. She was cast as the lead in two big pieces for the National Ballet School’s annual Spring Showcase, including “Swan Lake.” It was an incredibly demanding experience for her, both physically and emotionally. At one point, the school put her in a single room so she could get as much sleep as possible. And we had to

increase the minutes on our cell-phone plan because she was calling home for moral support so often. But it all paid off. The shows went very well. I remember sitting in the theater on the closing night, watching but also hearing the audience’s enthusiasm for her performance grow with each section of the ballet. You can hear some of this on the video excerpt that NBS has put up on its YouTube channel. When Emma takes a bow during one

break in action, you hear a few people shout, “Brava!” or “Yes!” It struck me that I had no idea who these people were. And it further struck me that suddenly, our daughter didn’t belong to just us anymore. This realization was scary. But it also felt like bittersweet proof that we had made the right decision to let her pursue this dream. Still, it never will be easy. While Emma is good about sleeping well, eating right, bathing herself in Epsom salt and soaking her feet in ice water, it takes a lot of Momand-Dad nagging to get her to the residence manager’s office for sometimes-needed cold medicine. They’re strict about staff issuing medicine so they can keep track of who’s taking what and how much. I agree with the policy, but I know that if Emma were at home, she would get medicine as soon as she needed it. That’s hard. It’s also difficult to parent your child from a distance when you can’t be there to coach her through dealing

with a teacher who rants about American politics or a dance partner who bruises ribs with his hoisting technique. Problems always get resolved, but you often have to wait until the next day to find out how. There are more than a few nights when I get off the phone with Emma and go straight upstairs for a hot bath and a cold beer. Dancing is not my ambition; it is Emma’s. There is only one picture in the house of her dancing (when she was 9), and you will never see a pair of pointe shoes used as art in my home. One of the reasons we let Emma head to NBS is we believe it’s healthiest to let ballet be her thing, not ours. As much as I miss seeing Emma every day, this dream never has been nor ever will be about me. It’s about her. And that’s exactly why I’m letting her pursue it. The Journey Sit down with Emma Hawes for lunch during a visit home, and it’s obvious the young ballerina is going places. She squeezes every ounce out of a day—volunteering, swimming, dancing, hanging with friends— while talking a mile a minute and smiling the whole time. Story by: Kristy Eckert What’s your typical day like at the National Ballet School? Usually I get up at 7:45, get ready, and then get down to breakfast at 8. I get over to school—we have a uniform—by 8:20. We start school at 8:25. We have classes in the morning, and then there’s lunch, and then two more classes. Dancing starts at about 2:30. We have our daily ballet class from 2:30 to 4:30, and then there’s an extra class— improvisation, ethnic, folk, etc. As we get closer and closer to shows, we have more rehearsals, and those can go to 6:45. You’ve obviously thin. How much do you weigh? I’m five-foot-five and a size two. I don’t know how much I weigh. We’re not allowed to have scales. I’m sure you get this question a lot: Do you starve yourself? I feel like people assume that dancers don’t eat, but really, we eat the same as athletes. We can put down the food for sure! The truth is, yes, you do have to be skinny; there are some people that take that too far. But the school feeds us really well. They don’t restrict our food. They always have

it took me a day. Now, I just need to unpack my stuff.

snacks available at all times. What’s a typical day of eating like for you? Breakfast is crazy. I have toast, eggs, bacon, fruit and sometimes they have Nutella, too. After the first classes, we go get cereal or fruit with dried nuts. For lunch, it’s usually pasta—like spaghetti and meatballs—and there’s a big salad bar with beans, chickpeas, lentils. Dinner is usually meat with vegetables. Or fish. There’s always a salad bar. And there’s dessert. We’ll have blueberry pie, cheesecake. What are the living arrangements like? I have one roommate. Each floor belongs to a certain age group, and we have a house parent. I hear your house parent can ground people. What for? Breaking curfew. We got

grounded one time for running through the hallway in our swimsuits! Do the dancers date each other? It happens. Are you dating anyone? No. I kind of feel like I don’t want to deal with that. I feel like I have too many other things on my plate. You’re really close with your family. What’s the homesickness like? In the beginning, it was really hard, because I hadn’t really gotten to know my class the way I do now. The first year was the hardest. It’s been a decreasing time period that it takes me to calm down about homesickness (after visiting home and returning back to school). In eighth grade, it took me a good week. By grade nine, it was down to three days or so. By grade 10,

6SLGHU9HLQ 7UHDWPHQW

The school has its students, including you, regularly talk to a psychiatrist. What’s that like? It was kind of weird, because I didn’t think I needed something like that. But I enjoyed it. It’s a little bit of an escape. That and going to my aunt and uncle’s on the weekends are my escapes.

%RG\ &RQWRXULQJ

What’s the hardest part? Just kind of believing in myself. I constantly have to remind myself where I am, and how lucky I am to be where I am. Especially when you’re working the hours as hard as you are, it’s easy to forget why you’re doing what you’re doing. (Constant criticism) can take a toll on a lot of dancers’ self esteem. What makes it worth all the work? The gratification of being on stage. Working so hard to get somewhere, and finally being able to perform it. I think everyone has that—something that gives them the best feeling in the world. I don’t know how to describe it, except that I feel like I’m sparkly.

Local pair find niche in girly golf and tennis stationery Story by: Andrea Cambern

t seems like such pleasant place to work, all pink and green and girly. The workspace, in an upstairs bedroom at Liz Graham’s Powell home, is the headquarters, design studio and distribution center of Bloom Designs—and a reflection of the fun stationery Graham and her business partner, Samantha Shroff, create. The duo met while working together at a small stationery boutique in Cincinnati. Graham, now 30, had studied graphic design at the University of Dayton, and Shroff, now 32, had studied fashion design at Kent State University. They shared a passion for paper art. Their business was born of a simple request from Graham’s mom: Design note cards featuring her tennis team’s uniform. Shroff rendered a design, Graham crafted its layout, and the cards were a hit. “Everyone loved them,” Graham said. “The golf pro at the club saw the cards and said, ‘You need to do this.’ ” And so they did. After researching the market, they felt they could fill a niche. They devised a plan to produce a custom line featuring images of all things sporty,

74

Capital-Style.com July/August 2010

with a fashionably feminine twist. With seven designs in tow, they decided to test the waters and set up shop at a trade show in Florida. They got so many orders that they returned to Ohio, quit their jobs, and launched Bloom Designs. “It’s been a dream,” Graham

said. “We both always wanted to start our own company. We loved what we were doing, and were surprised at how many people responded to it.” Now, six years into business, Bloom Designs can be found in some of the country’s most tony pro shops, from Pinehurst in North Carolina to

Muirfield Village in Dublin. “It was the bright colors that first caught my attention,” says Amy Zierten, merchandise manager at Muirfield Village Golf Club. “We used a personalized travel mug for a ladies-only shopping event, and they were thrilled with the fact that it had their name on it.” While sports designs make up the bulk of Bloom’s business, they also make personalized note cards, travel mugs and more featuring everything from baby animals to flowers. The common thread is a bright palette with a bit of whimsy. For now, the pair handles everything, from creating the images for both stock and custom designs to packing up and sending out orders. The packaging is part of the appeal, and each grosgrain ribbon is tied with TLC (sometimes by Graham’s husband, Steve, who is more than happy to pitch in but a little reluctant to admit it). Although both women agree that starting a home-based business wasn’t easy, they have no regrets. “It’s intimidating to start a business. But we decided to take one step at a time,” Shroff said. “We learn something new every day, and it makes it exciting.” For now, the focus is wholesale and internet orders, but both look forward to the day when they can move Bloom Designs out of the house and into a space that combines a storefront and office. Meanwhile, that flirty upstairs bedroom seems the perfect place for two creative souls to bloom. For more on Bloom Designs, visit www.BloomDesigns.com. Swanky Swimwear Lois McCourt was in a department store last year looking for a bathing suit. All she found was frustration. “I see frumpy and I see skinny, and I say, ‘Where am I?’ ” she recalled. “And I want to cry.” Instead of succumbing to tears, though, the 46-year-old Long Island native and onetime jewelry designer—who is now a stay-at-home mom with three sons in Dublin—got to work. The result? Swankini swimwear. McCourt’s flattering two-piece suits, on the market since January, have already been featured on the “Today” show and in Redbook. “The best feeling is when someone comes out of the dressing room,” McCourt said, “and says, ‘I feel good in it.’ ”

And he has worked with celebrities like Jennifer Lopez. Still, the 40-year-old who studied at the Columbus College of Art & Design doesn’t forget where he came from, friends say. That’s part of the reason the globe-trotting designer and consultant was named this year’s Alumni Fashion Icon, an award presented annually at the spring senior fashion show. “It’s always the same Ed,” said longtime friend Keith Morgan, Buchanan’s freshman year roommate at CCAD. “The fact that he works within those circles and yet stays …

He immediately fit in on campus, he said, and decided to study fashion design after completing his freshman year foundation courses. “He was always really energetic and interested in what he was doing,” said Brooke Hannan, the professor who started the fashion design program and mentored Buchanan. “You could hide, I suppose, if you really wanted to, and he wasn’t one of those people. He was always right there.” During his studies, however, Buchanan eventually felt pulled toward the Big Apple— as many fashion students do, Hannan said. He moved to

Here, Buchanan at CCAD; at right, some of his designs

New York, finished his degree at the Parsons School for Design, and started earning a reputation with jobs at places like Giorgio Armani and J. Crew. In 1995, Bottega Veneta approached the well-known but relative-fashion-newbie about establishing its inaugural apparel line. “At that time, Bottega Veneta was only handbags. And it was kind of a collection which was for, let’s say, a consumer of a certain age,” Buchanan said. “I wasn’t so interested, because

I was young, and I just wanted to do something which was cool. I was like, ‘Who? Bottega who?’ ” Nonetheless, he took the New York-based design director position, adding knitwear—which was to become his specialty—and leather goods to the brand. Buchanan also formed a close friendship with Manuela Morin, a Bottega Veneta designer and native New Yorker. When the company moved its design studio and staff to Milan, the pair experienced

the transatlantic transition together. Morin watched as Buchanan’s style sense was affected. “I think that has broadened his horizons and taste levels,” she said. Both left the company in 2000 and together launched LEFLESH. Buchanan designed knitwear and ready-to-wear pieces, and Morin created handbags and shoes. Their collections received acclaim at fashion shows and were sold in Paris, London and New York, among other places. Buchanan adds levity—and laughter—to any situation, and that held true even when starting a line from scratch in the often-serious fashion world, Morin said. “Edward always puts a smile on your face,” she said. “And when we started our company together, it was just a lot more of that.”

The pair showed their final collection in 2005, when Buchanan and Morin took up separate consultancies. Today, though, they still speak often and run into each other in Milan on occasion, as they both consult for Italian clothing company Stefanel. Buchanan has also launched Sansovino6, a knitwear line of comfy luxury featuring light, long sweaters and long-johnlike pants in neutral colors. “I’m not so interested in selling,” Buchanan said. “I just want to create great clothes for my friends that we want to wear.” But it turns out other people want to wear his goodies, too. “People responded, and it kind of took off,” he said. Sansovino6, now in its second season, is available in stores in Italy, France and Japan. Buchanan expects it might be

carried in New York and Los Angeles after its third season. On Buchanan’s occasional trips to Columbus, he stops by CCAD and speaks to fashion design students, sharing his sketches and occasionally putting on impromptu minifashion shows of his work. (The school awarded him an honorary degree a few years back.) He stays in touch with his former professor Hannan, for whom he bought a ticket to the senior fashion show in May so he could thank her in his acceptance speech when he was honored. And he organizes reunions of sorts with CCAD friends like Morgan, who also attended the show to cheer on his old roommate. Perhaps that friendly, relaxed, all-inclusive personality is why Buchanan’s designs are

I like to think I’m a realist. And I like to create products that I think I can see a woman wearing. I enjoy designing women’s wear because there’s a bit more risk involved. With menswear, the majority of the consumer is very classic— which is perfectly fine, because I like classic as well. But with women’s wear, you can play more with color, with print. There’s a bit more space there.

On the future of fashion I’m doing another brand that’s based on organic knitwear, called Tint. Within the knitwear market, there’s a lot of research that’s been done using organic materials, sustainable materials, and organic and sustainable dyeing processes. The end result is that it’s more expensive, but it’s conscious, and I think the future is— needs to be—conscious.

so successful—because they are equally as easy. Like him, they are stylish without being ostentatious. “I’m not accustomed to being called an icon,” Buchanan said as he accepted his award. But, he added with a laugh, he could get used to it. July/August 2010 Capital-Style.com

Do you need closet help? It’s A Cinch She knew she loved this top. But paired with skinny jeans (she’s new to them) and a belt, it’s even better, Brokaw said. “I think my own corset belt made the entire outfit.”

ake one look in Adrienne Brokaw’s sizable walk-in closet, and it’s clear she appreciates fashion. The 42-yearold partner at Ernst & Young boasts a collection of quality suits, great shoes and several beautiful pieces from Jinny, an upscale Short North boutique. But like many women—even the fashion savvy—she faced a couple of dressing challenges. Among them: How to look professional without looking overly formal, and how to create weekend looks that are casual but sophisticated. Enter Elizabeth Bean Smith, owner of Wardrobe Therapy and Central Ohio’s unofficial closet queen. Smith spent half a day with Brokaw to help. First, they purged, filling four garbage bags with items to give away. Then, they worked on pairing new pieces. Here are some of the looks Smith put together for Brokaw—all using items she already owns.

Elizabeth Bean Smith studied at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology and worked for years in retail before opening Wardrobe Therapy. She offers services like consulting (she’ll help you figure out what cuts and colors make you look best); closet organization (she’ll be honest about what jeans you should purge and what pieces you need); and shopping (she’ll go alone or take you along). Packages for women or men start at $300 for three hours of in-home consulting and five look-book photos. For more info, visit www.Wardrobe TherapyLLC.com.

Versatile Vest Brokaw knew to pair this asymmetrical vest with a fitted tee and cuffed boyfriend jeans for a casual look. But, Brokaw said, “This is how we made it work for professional.”

Updated Classic This classic dress also was bought more than a decade ago. But by updating it with these pieces, “No one would know that dress was 10 years old,” Brokaw said.

“Even though you think you know your style, you need that voice of reasoning to tell you, ‘You know, you don’t need that.’ Elizabeth gives that boost of confidence that if I’m wearing something out, I know it looks good.” –Adrienne Brokaw July/August 2010 Capital-Style.com

Laser hair removal eliminates unwanted hair... wherever it may be Stories by: Dana Wilson

omen shave, wax and tweeze to maintain satiny-smooth skin, but the same stubborn problem always resurfaces: unwanted hair. For some—particularly those who struggle with excess facial fuzz—laser hair removal can be a life-changing experience. “There is a small group of women who come in and say, ‘You have changed my whole life,’ ” said Dr. Kristen Kenney of Premier Aesthetic and Laser Centre in Delaware. The method destroys individual hair follicles, providing permanent results after a series of sessions under gently pulsing lights. “The convenience of not having the hair far outweighs

the little bit of sting that you might feel,” said 44-year-old Amy Goebel of Dublin, who is a patient at Westerville Dermatology’s Aderma Skin Care Center. “My goal is to never have to buy a razor again.” Though convenience is a major selling point, many women who choose this cosmetic treatment discover that eliminating excess hair also boosts their self confidence. As women age, hair often emerges in new and unexpected places. Birth control pills, pregnancy, menopause and other hormonal changes can trigger the growth of new hair, particularly on the face, chin and upper lip. Medications and genetics also are to blame. More women seek to remove hair from their face than any other area of the body, said Dr. Nina Deep, who routinely performs laser

hair removal treatments at her Westerville practice, Nina Deep Aesthetics. “Sometimes women come in and they’re mortified because they’ve got a full beard, essentially, and they don’t realize they’re not alone,” Deep said. “I really think it’s empowering for women to get rid of embarrassing hair. For some women, they’ve never let their kids touch their faces.” Deep and other doctors aren’t easily fazed when it comes to hair-removal requests. Kenney said there isn’t an area on the body that she hasn’t treated with lasers, from belly buttons to toes. For women, the chin, upper lip, bikini line and underarms are the most popular areas. About 10 percent of Kenney’s clients are men, who usually want to de-fuzz their back, July/August 2010 Capital-Style.com

Lasers are safely used on all skin tones and types, but experts say the treatment is most effective on patients with dark, coarse hair and light skin. The process requires patience—it typically takes several laser sessions to completely kill all of the hair follicles. Treatments are generally spaced four to six weeks apart to give dormant hair time to surface. And touch-ups are necessary. Even though laser hair removal is considered a permanent treatment that lasts for years, there’s always a chance that a small section of hair will be missed or that new hair will grow over time. “There is some maintenance involved,” Deep said. “I tell my patients, ‘Just plan to see me once a year. Every time you get (the treatment), even less will come back.’ ”

Laser Hair Removal 101 How does the procedure work? Lasers destroy hair follicles with heat. Is it permanent? Yes, but a series of treatments—usually four to six—are needed to drastically reduce or eliminate all hair. Touch-ups also are recommended for strays that might grow later. How many treatments will I need? Patients typically see results after four to six treatments. Is the process painful? The procedure feels similar to the light snap of a rubber band. Certain areas of the body are more sensitive, such

as the upper lip and bikini area. A topical anesthetic cream can be used to ease discomfort but usually isn’t necessary. Are there side effects or risks? Side effects can include redness, swelling and tenderness. The risks are pain, burns, discoloration and scarring, but are not typical when lasers are used on the proper setting. Research the expertise of your doctor or nurse before undergoing any treatment.

What should I expect after treatment? You might experience a temporary sunburned feeling. Avoid sunlight immediately after treatment. Hair will continue to grow until the follicle

Am I a good candidate for this? Laser treatments work best on dark hair and are not effective on white, blond or red hair. How much does it cost? The cost averages $100 per treatment and up, depending on the area of the body and volume of hair.

Families share a laugh during a recent Grandview Hop Story by: Dana Wilson

I Photo by: Will Shilling

Though it once simply showcased art, the Grandview Hop has evolved into a lively street festival that celebrates community. On the last Saturday of each month, shops extend their hours and welcome visitors to stroll a four-block stretch of Grandview Avenue. “We do our best to fill every inch of that with something fun,” said Steve Weaver, president of Explore the Avenue, the local merchants association. Musicians perform; food and craft vendors line the streets; and restaurants offer one-nightonly dinner and drink specials. “The message we want people to leave with is just how many great restaurants and shops we have here,” Weaver said, “so they come back and visit us throughout the month.” The next Grandview Hop is July 31 from 5 to 9 p.m. For a guide to the community, visit www.TheGrandviewHop.com.

The owners of a world-renowned auction house artfully blend antiques with modern living Story by: Kristy Eckert

hey were young, savvy business owners with a point to prove: Antiques have a place in modern living. So Amelia and Jeff Jeffers—who at 39 and 42 are the country’s youngest owners of a national auction house— teamed with a builder to design a home for last year’s BIA Parade of Homes in Dublin. They intended to create a new place that could provide the space and function a family needs while also showcasing antiques. They did it too well. Six months into the project, the Jeffers—who own Garth’s

Auctioneers & Appraisers in Delaware and had long lived in a large 1810 home on their business’s property—decided they wanted to buy the Parade house themselves. About a year after the project’s completion, the couple and their four children—ages 12, 10, 8 and 6—are enjoying life in their new digs. “Here, the antiques almost pop,” Amelia said. “It’s almost like it breathed new life into our collection.” There’s also something to be said, she joked, about turning on the thermostat and it actually heating the whole house. Their clients, the Jeffers said, thought they were crazy to give up their old, labor-oflove home. But as the children grow and become more active, the couple wanted to spend more time with them and less on maintenance. “The reality is,” Jeff said, “it’s about family living.” Family living is actually

what the Jeffers were about before they even had children. Jeff, who is originally from the Cleveland area, had taken his Ohio State University degree and opened two Buffalo Wild Wings restaurants in West Virginia—one near West Virginia University and the other near Marshall University. He met Amelia, a West Virginia native who was studying at WVU, in Morgantown, and they married and began running the restaurants together. Soon, the then-owners of Garth’s—who had been impressed by Jeff after he painted their house in college and subsequently gave him business advice on his restaurants—invited the Jeffers to work with them and eventually take over. The couple, who wanted children, saw the auctioneering business as a lifestyle more conducive for family, so they made the jump. (They sold both restaurants last year.) Nearly 15 years into the

Antiquing Tips Interested in starting a collection? Here’s the Jeffers’ advice.

l Buy what makes you smile. At the end of the day, you have to live with it. l Buy the best that you can afford in what you like. l Do your homework; researching antiques is easy online. l Start in stores, like those in Powell. Make friends at auctions to help you along.

business, they have successfully ushered Garth’s into the 21st century with, among other things, an active Facebook page and online auctions. Meanwhile, they’ve acquired a taste for antiques themselves. Their personal collection includes several Ohio-made pieces, and ranges from handcarved wooden chests that hold family photos to an iron trivet beside the oven that is actually used. “It’s about the story, who made it,” Amelia said. Jeff, who can recite a time period and tale about nearly every piece in their home, said they value that these items were crafted for somebody for whom the maker clearly cared. He says one of his colleagues once said it best: “Great folk art is really an affair of the heart.” The Jeffers hope their own home is proof that old and new can beautifully blend. “You can change a room with one antique,” Jeff said. “It doesn’t have to look like your grandmother’s house.” July/August 2010 Capital-Style.com

The House The Jeffers teamed with New England Homes to build their 5,500-square-foot house. It has four bedrooms and five-and-a-half bathrooms, including a master suite on the first floor. The three upstairs bedrooms are unified by an open landing that serves as a game area. The back end of the house includes a second flight of stairs leading to a bonus room. The home won the People’s Choice Award for best house in last year’s BIA Parade of Homes.

The Kitchen

With six hungry mouths to feed and plenty of friends to entertain, the Jeffers spend a lot of time in their kitchen. On either side of the main sink are four dishwashers (two deep and two shallow) designed to look like cabinetry. “That’s maybe one of my favorite things about the house,” Amelia said. Above the sink, a German house blessing graces the wall. Across the room, the stove includes a griddle and, above it, a pot filler that stretches over all of the burners so pots can be filled with water without being hauled to and from the sink. Beside the stove, on the countertop, sits a lazy heart trivet made in the 1770s that Jeff gave Amelia as an anniversary gift. “I love that thing that is sitting off to the side that someone might not notice,” Amelia said. In the dining area just beyond the kitchen’s edge, the family eats at a table that Jeff made himself out of curly maple.

The Library

The Paper

The library’s fireplace mantle and built-in shelves hold several bellows, which are devices used to blow air into fireplace flames. Bellows often include interesting hand paintings and aren’t difficult to find. “It’s an affordable way to collect, Amelia said. “And, Jeff added, “it adds color. Focusing on color is a good way to start collecting antiques, he noted. “We think people can begin to collect and focus on color and have some fun. The glass tulips on the piano are German and French antiques made from 1910 to 1920. Collectors purchase the stems, which cost about $100, one at a time and eventually build a vase full of flowers.

The library shelves also include favorites from the Jeffers’ collection of paper, which includes items like love notes or awards of merit that are painted, pin-pricked or otherwise artfully made. The framed paper art shown here includes two valentines made around 1800 in Southeastern Pennsylvania and written in German.

Décor The Paintings The Jeffers are avid collectors of work by Charles Duvall, a Columbus artist who painted oil on canvas and is known for his landscapes. He created the bulk of his work from the 1920s to the 1940s. “We happen to like his style,” Amelia said. The couple owns the only human figure Duvall ever painted—a stunningly tasteful nude woman he created in 1946. It hangs on a wall above the master tub—opposite a flat-screen TV.

The Chest This sunflower chest is the oldest piece in the home. It was made in America in 1680, when colonies were just being founded. Now, it holds stationery inside and family photos on top.

The Carpet Balls This jar is filled with carpet balls, which are pieces used in an English parlor game similar to bocce ball. More common ones cost about $100, more rare ones, $400.

The Backyard Several neighbors join the Jeffers for summertime fun, swimming in the pool and roasting marshmallows beside the fireplace. Northwest Landscape Design, of Plain City, won an award for creating this outdoor living space.

The Mud Room The space (where stairs lead to the bonus room) includes a 1920s boot-scraping rug made of iron hearts that now serves as a magnet board. It was a gift from Jeff to Amelia.

Homes on Parade

The Jeffers have teamed with New England Homes again to design a house for the 2010 BIA Parade of Homes. (Though this time, they promise they’re not moving in!) You can see the home, along with seven others, during the Parade, which runs July 24 to August 8 at Ackerly Park in New Albany. Admission is $12. For details, visit www.BIAParade.com. Luxurious kitchens add wow factor to fabulous homes Story by: Dana Wilson Photos by: Will Shilling

T

he kitchen takes center stage in most modern homes—and not just at mealtimes. “It’s kind of the heart of the house,” said Amy Conley, a real estate agent with Real Living HER. “Whether you’re a cook or not, it’s where you live your life.” Conley and other agents say that the most buyer-friendly kitchens are beautiful yet functional, and tend to share some universal design trends: an earth-toned color palette; stainless-steel appliances; granite countertops; artistic backsplashes; and large center islands for food prep and entertaining. The Central Ohio Luxury Home Network’s recent Luxe Home Tour showcased an elite collection of houses priced at $650,000 and above, including kitchens that are cooking up that wow factor. These are the highlights.

Light & Lovely The Retreat 456 Partridge Bend, Powell 4 bedrooms; 3 1/2 baths 6,264 square feet Built in 1993 on 2.5 acres Price: $1,190,000 Enveloped by a park-like setting, this home features a massive great room with a stone fireplace that connects to a spacious kitchen. When the owners remodeled the kitchen, they changed the custom cabinets’ color from blue to bisque, added a tumbled marble backsplash and installed stainlesssteel appliances. A wall of windows lets plenty of natural light into the kitchen, which opens to a screened porch and a wrap-around deck.

Unearthing Hometown Harvests

You don’t need a backyard garden to stock your kitchen with fresh, homegrown foods. Local farmers markets are brimming with just-picked fruits and vegetables. The goods change with the seasons, making weekly grocery-shopping trips an adventure, not a chore. We’ve mapped out an array of markets open for business this summer and fall, ranging from one of the oldest (Olde Worthington) to the newest (the Market at 15th and High).

WHY LOCAL MATTERS

A

griculture ranks as the top industry in Ohio, contributing more than $98 billion annually to the state’s economy. But less than 1 percent of the food grown here is actually consumed by Ohioans, said Michael Jones, owner of the Greener Grocer and executive director of Local Matters, a nonprofit that promotes locally grown food. “We’ve really lost touch with the food on our plate,” Jones said. “We don’t know who has grown it. We don’t know how it’s grown. I think buying from lo-

cal sources really helps you begin to tell a story and see how connected we are to the person who puts that seed in the ground.” One of Local Matters’ goals is to make access to local food easy. The group’s Fresh Connect directory, www. Local-Matters.org, links consumers with restaurants, farmers markets, cooperatives and community gardens. Buying locally doesn’t just benefit the economy, Jones said. “Being closer to the source really encourages more healthful eating.” Spring 2009 Capital-Style.com

Salt and Pepper Cucumber Martini Ingredients u 2

ozs Absolut Peppar vodka ozs Absolut vodka u 2 ozs cucumber juice u 2

Directions

To juice cucumbers, use an electric juicer; or, in a food processor, puree the chopped, whole cucumber (seeds, skin and all) and strain through a cheesecloth. One large cucumber produces approximately 8 ounces of juice. Rim a martini glass with salt and fresh cracked pepper (run a lemon wedge around the rim of a chilled glass and dip onto a plate with a salt and pepper mixture). Combine the vodkas and the cucumber juice in a martini shaker with lots of ice. Shake until cold, about 45 seconds. Strain. Makes 1 martini.

Columbus chefs share recipes featuring fresh, local ingredients Story by: Dana Wilson I Photos by: Will Shilling

The beauty of farmfresh cooking is in its simplicity. But figuring out how to best use Mother Nature’s products still requires skill. We enlisted the help of three Columbus chefs to create a summery meal using homegrown ingredients found at local farmers markets.

Alana Shock

T

(Chef and Owner)

he menu at Alana’s Food and Wine changes almost daily, and that’s because the chef-owner draws her inspiration from seasonal ingredients. Alana Shock spontaneously plans some of her dishes while wandering the aisles of the North Market, where many of the vendors greet her by name. She knows the origin of nearly everything served on her plates—from the naturally raised meat to the herbs in her pesto—thanks to the relationships she’s developed with area farmers. A down-to-earth approach has guided Shock throughout her career. “If you cook in season, you have to do so little to make it nice,” she said. “The taste is so much better.”

Chilled and Dilled Cucumber Chardonnay Soup Ingredients u 3 English

After washing, seeding and chopping the cucumbers, combine all ingredients (except heavy cream) and puree in small batches. Once pureed, stir the heavy cream into the soup. Let the soup chill for an hour before enjoying. Garnish with smoked trout or chives. Makes 5 cups. Note: Sour cream makes an acceptable substitution for yogurt, and substituting buttermilk for heavy cream makes for an enlightened, lively soup. July/August 2010 Capital-Style.com

A

s the local-food movement spreads in Columbus, more city dwellers are connecting with Ohio’s agricultural roots. Paul Yow, executive chef at Barcelona, makes an effort to serve a healthy dose of locally grown foods. Access isn’t a problem: Farmers have shown up unannounced at the restaurant’s back door with truckloads of produce. But Yow won’t buy from just anyone. “I want to know it’s grown safely,” he said. Many ingredients for his Spanish dishes come from the Wayward Seed Farm in Marysville, Green Edge Gardens in Amesville (near Athens) and the Greener Grocer at the North Market. “The money does actually filter back through the local economy,” Yow said. “Plus, you also get great flavors.”

Sprinkle with a little bit of salt and roast in a pre-heated 350 F oven for about 25 minutes (or until the thickest part of the thigh is done). Time this so that they will be done cooking approximately 10 minutes before preparing the rest of the dish. If using the breast meat, drain well. Place a large sauté pan over medium heat for two minutes. Add the olive oil, chorizo and the chicken breast. (If using the legs and thighs, they will be added later.) he dessert menu at Black Creek Bistro shines year round, but pastry chef Michelle Milhous-Garland looks forward to summer’s abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables. Some are picked from restaurant owner Kent Peters’ farm. Milhous-Garland’s sweet creations include traditional favorites—madefrom-scratch ice cream and strawberry shortcake—as well as the unexpected, like corn creme brulee. “Everybody wants dessert, she said. She has a vegetable garden at home and frequently shops farmers markets for the ripest selection of fruits, particularly berries, because most storebought produce is picked prematurely to allow time for shipping. Ripening continues during the trip. Local farmers, though, often pick and sell on the same day. It doesn’t get much fresher. “You’re getting something that’s right at its peak, Milhous-Garland said.

lush honey locust tree shades the courtyard patio at G. Michael’s Bistro & Bar in German Village. It’s a fitting symbol for the eatery: The mature branches spread their leaves over a relaxed restaurant where local ingredients meet Lowcountry traditions in a classic neighborhood setting. Cooking up this old-is-new alchemy is David Tetzloff, the restaurant’s executive chef and co-owner. A Miami of Ohio grad, Tetzloff went to culinary school at Johnson & Wales University in Charleston, South Carolina. He returned with a taste for Lowcountry cuisine and a passion for seasonal flavors, and the

A long wooden bar, exposed brick walls and comfy banquets make G. Michael’s front room a seriously fun place to chill out. Happy-hour discounts on drinks and small plates are available at the bar. results are perfectly suited for a bistro that’s both hip and historic. Every visit to G. Michael’s should begin at the bar. The narrow room with exposed brick walls is exactly what you expect from a cozy German Village hangout, and you can drink in the history (and the drinks) from a comfortable perch at the long wooden bar. We started with a Village Royale martini ($9), an icy mix of Vox vodka, Caravella limoncello, Grand Marnier,

prosecco and muddled orange. The drink is smooth and surprisingly a little dry, with a delightfully tart lemon finish. The Third & Willow martini ($9) was equally well-made and not at all cloying, avoiding the syrupy trap that can snare some sweet drinks. It’s made with Cîroc vodka, Lillet blanc and grapefruit juice, which comes through as a clean, refreshing burst of citrus. Unfortunately, rain kept us off the patio during our last visit. (I have to admit, I have

a bad track record of bringing bad weather to G. Michael’s with me; you’d be well-advised to avoid the patio when I’m dining there.) The bistro-like dining room is just as comfortable, though, and much drier. A wall of windows overlooks the patio, offering a pleasant view of that old locust tree even during a downpour, while a skylight shines from above. The warm natural light adds to G. Michael’s relaxed and unfussy mood.

Our meal started with one of the menu’s Lowcountry favorites (and ours too), the Shrimp and Grits appetizer ($12). The sweet seafood is joined by spicy, smoky Andouille sausage and country ham, while the creamy grits cut through the heat with comforting heft. The Crab Cake ($9), an appetizer special that evening, was just as hearty for a small plate. The meaty patty was served on a bed of vinegary black-eyed peas.

Executive Chef David Tetzloff has been firing up fresh flavors at G. Michael’s since 1999. He co-owns the bistro with local restaurant veteran Jeff Benson. Continuing our flavor travelogue, a true highlight was the Duo of Ohio Pork ($24), which showcases Chef Tetzloff’s wide-ranging flair for Southern cuisine and local ingredients on one gloriously oversized plate. This power couple includes a crispy, country-fried pork loin and fork-tender pulled pork. Sweet braised cabbage and oniony home fries underscore the meaty affair, while a cider-vinegar barbecue sauce adds a tangy pop. Nice. The chef also has a tasty touch with seafood. Authentic Italian Cuisine was a thick steak of fish with a bright citrusy kick. It was topped with a chunky crab salad and served with fingerling potatoes and asparagus. The Grilled Mahi entrée ($26) takes a richer approach, with a buttery bacon sauce and a cheddar-jalapeno polenta cake that revealed a warm, creamy center beneath its fried-crisp crust. This is straight-up fine comfort food, no matter what region you draw inspiration from. For dessert, we enjoyed the Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie Bar ($6.50). Served warmed in its own ramekin, and topped with Jeni’s ice cream, this gooey delight was a great way to end our journey from Lowcountry flavors to the best ingredients in Columbus.

Drinks: The bar serves more than 100 wines, along with an ample selection of classic and specialty cocktails. The Italian Ice Martini, the restaurant’s signature drink, is worth sipping for its light, sweet flavor—and for the amount of labor that goes into making it. Bel Lago’s bartenders soak lemon zests in vodka, let the concoction cure for about 10 days and then add simple syrup. The homemade limoncello is then mixed with cranberry juice to create a pretty, magenta drink with a strong citrus flavor.

atmosphere: Perched atop a cliff overlooking the Scioto River, the breezy, uncovered patio at this Mexican and Latin restaurant is a casual party spot during warm-weather months. into a specialty wine store that carries vino from all over the world, in addition to beer, cards and gifts. Since taking the reins there nearly 15 years ago, Muncie learned more about wine the way she suggests anyone should: “Read, read, read and taste, taste, taste.” She also takes annual trips to various wineries, with plans to visit Champagne, Barcelona and the Catalonia wine country this year. Domaine Serene Winery Hill Vineyard pinot noir (2006) Region: Willamette Valley, Oregon Tasting notes: Layers of flavors begin with dark berry fruits and evolve to mushrooms and wet soil, in the typical Burgundian style Pair with: A mushroom-based dish; salmon or lamb; hard-cured cheeses Why Faye likes it: “This is one of the stars of Oregon. It’s absolutely beautiful, with a finish that goes on and on. They make two others that are more expensive, but I absolutely love this one. It’s more of a celebratory-level wine, but it’s worth every penny.” Cost: $85

This being German Village, do you keep a lot of German wine in stock? We do, actually. There are two German restaurants near here, so tourists especially will eat there and then maybe come over for a bottle of German wine to take home. And riesling is a world-class grape. If you can get people to drink riesling, they’re all about it. A lot of times people think, “Oh, I don’t drink sweet wine.” But riesling is something they definitely need to experiment with. What do you like to drink? I’m a huge Champagne and sparkling wine fan. Some of my very favorites are the bubblies. And also pinot noir. Would you talk about your other retail venture? Faze is in Upper Arlington. I’ve had that store 23 years. It’s an upscale, eclectic lady’s boutique. I split my time between Hausfrau and Faze. And in my spare time, I enjoy traveling, reading. I bicycle a lot in the summertime. I entertain a lot; I have a lot of friends at my house in the summer. I have a pool, so it’s a nice place to hang. I manage to fit my fun in.

Pierre Gimonnet & Fils brut Champagne Region: Champagne, France Tasting notes: Full-bodied and yeasty, with pear, apple and toasty flavors Pair with: Any appetizers or cheeses; chicken, fish or light meat dishes Why Faye likes it: “It’s a cru wine, which means it’s a reserve. Almost every house makes what is called a non-vintage style, which is the house style. You know that if you have a bottle today or a bottle five years from now, it’s going to have a similar profile. In the vintage-year wines, the wines can differ dramatically.” Cost: $60

If you’re uncomfortable with them using a box grater, prepare the vegetables for them the night before. Next, how about a yogurt parfait? Then the mix is layered with crunchy granola and fresh berries. Finally, sandwiches don’t have to be out; they just need a makeover. Show your kids how to use tortillas instead of bread in a Hot Turkey Tortilla Panini. Cheese, turkey and tomatoes, plus the secret ingredient of coleslaw, are arranged in a flour tortilla. The tortilla is then cooked until golden brown in a hot skillet. Summertime is an excuse for fun— cooking included. The bonus? Maybe they’ll even be compelled to make dinner for you.

(Makes 1 serving) Your child can use whatever meat and cheese he or she likes. To make it vegetarian, skip the meat and add more cheese and veggies, such as shredded carrots and thinly sliced cucumbers.

ingredients: l1

teaspoon olive oil or vegetable oil flour tortilla (soft-taco size) l2 tablespoons shredded mozzarella l2 to 3 oz. thinly sliced turkey breast l1 /4 cup purchased coleslaw l2 thin slices of tomato l1

instructions:

Pour the oil into a medium-size skillet over medium heat. Meanwhile, lay the tortilla on a cutting board. Sprinkle half the cheese over one half of the tortilla; layer turkey, coleslaw and tomato over cheese; sprinkle with remaining cheese. Fold uncovered portion of tortilla over filling. Carefully transfer tortilla to skillet. Press down once or twice with a spatula. Cook until golden brown. Carefully flip the tortilla over. Cook until golden brown. Serve warm.

Veggie Dip with Pita Chips (Makes 2 servings) This recipe makes enough for two people, so your child can share with a sibling or friend or store the remaining dip in the refrigerator and the pita chips in an airtight container.

ingredients: l2

pieces pita bread (white or whole wheat) cup mayonnaise (light or regular) l3 to 4 oz. cream cheese (light or regular), softened l 1/4 cup purchased salsa l 1/4 cup grated carrot l 1/4 cup grated cucumber with peel l Handful of parsley leaves l Juice of 1/2 lemon l Salt and pepper (optional) l 1/3

instructions:

Preheat the oven to 400 F. Cut the bread into triangles (a dinner knife works fine). Arrange on a baking sheet. Bake until crispy, about 10 minutes. Stir mayonnaise and cream cheese in a bowl until well mixed. Stir in the salsa, carrot and cucumber. Tear the parsley into small pieces. Stir into the dip. Stir in the lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper, if desired. Serve the dip with pita crisps. Store any remaining dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Store any leftover pita in a zip-top bag at room temperature.

My Shake Testing the Power Plate I’ll admit I was skeptical about trying a fitness machine designed to shake my body into shape. The Power Plate doesn’t look especially scientific or intimidating—it resembles an oversized scale with handlebars—but within minutes of stepping onto the vibrating plate, I felt a burning sensation deep within my muscles. My 55-minute-long group Power Plate class at the Pilates and Personal Training Studio of Bexley began with a quick warm up on an elliptical machine. Then, instructor Jamie Bumgarner led me and two other clients through a series of cardio and strengthening moves on and off the plate. The vibrations tingled my whole body, from my toes to my teeth, and intensified each squat, leg lift and static pose. We alternated repetitive movements, using hand weights, medicine balls and resistance bands. Halfway through our session, sweat was dripping off my forehead. I felt like I’d been working out for double the amount of time I’d spent at the gym. (I take several high-impact cardio-dance classes a week and don’t usually tire easily, so I was surprised to feel the effects so quickly.) After class, my legs shook as if I’d just finished running a race. I hadn’t exactly conquered the Power Plate in a day, but I’d survived, and that alone felt good. My quads, glutes and hamstrings, though, didn’t fully recover until two days later. –Dana Wilson

he regulars at the Pilates and Personal Training Studio of Bexley are no couch potatoes. So when the studio doubled its size earlier this year and introduced a new vibrating piece of workout equipment to its clients, most were game to try it at least once. Those who stuck with the Power Plate discovered a killer workout. “We’ve had people say, ‘I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to get through the class,’ ” said Katie Wolfe Baker, the studio’s manager. “A lot of people feel they need that boost.” What separates the Power Plate from traditional gym

gear is its gentle vibrations, which transmit waves of energy throughout the body. On the lowest setting, the plate pulsates 30 times per second and triggers muscles to rapidly contract. But users can’t expect to simply turn on the machine and stand still while it does all the work; results come weeks after performing a combination of strength and cardio moves atop the plate. “Instead of using dumbbells or barbells to apply force, we use vibration and basically apply more gravitational force,” explained Tony Swain, training and education manager for Power Plate North America, a California-based company. “When that plate drops, your

body thinks the earth just fell.” As a result, muscles work overtime without your brain controlling the reaction, Swain said. “It’s much more of a neurological workout than a conscious training.” The Power Plate’s intensity is appealing to those with limited time, or those who have difficulty motivating themselves, Swain said. There are therapeutic benefits, too, because the vibrations help increase blood flow and can be used before or after workouts to massage sore muscles. “People are like, ‘It can’t be a workout. I don’t see the movement,’ ” Swain said. “That’s a misconception until you get on it.”

Anne Adair, owner of Urban Moves in Bexley, uses the machines to help clients build strength. “I’ve had them for long enough to really see benefits,” she said. “What I’ve seen is, people who are coming back from an injury get better and recover stronger.”

With three little boys and too much chaos, Laura Hamrick was about to lose it in the grocery store. The vibrant saleswoman-turned-stay-at-home mom tried to balance her 8-month-old son’s container of Cheerios on the cart handle, thinking it should somehow attach. So she went home and designed OnTray, a plastic dish that clips to grocery carts and holds snacks, coupons and more. To date, roughly 20,000 have been sold worldwide, and the product—available at several stores and www. OnTray2Go.com—has appeared everywhere from Oscars gift baskets to Parents magazine. “It’s not going to change the world, but it’s one of those gadgets in life that just makes the world a little bit better,” said Hamrick, 36. “It’s amazing how people say, ‘You know, this is the best $7 I ever spent.’ That’s exciting to me.” Story by: Kristy Eckert
