Oakland talks Christmas tree varieties and care By GEORGE KOSKO Oakland New Albany Nursery Manager The evergreen tree brought home for the Christmas season has come to mean many things since its first use, five centuries ago. The tree’s modern origins trace to Germany, where the Yule-tree was lit with candles for Christmas celebrations. Today in our multicultural world, it symbolizes not only the Christian religious tradition, but also represents a seasonal celebration of giving, love, friends and family. This year you will join a happy throng of 33 million fellow tree shoppers, who will go to find the ‘perfect tree’ at the local tree lot, garden center or cut-your-own tree farm. Many will accessorize, with fresh made wreaths, poinsettias and roping to complete their homes’ Christmas look. For those who worry about this harvest’s effect on the environment, fear not. Today’s Christmas trees are grown on farms, not harvested from the wild, and in their typical 7-12 year growth cycle in the field, provide thousands of acres of excellent habitat for birds, animals and insects. In our great state of Ohio, we have the happy advantage of choosing from several conifers that make for excellent Christmas trees. By excellent, I mean they have good aroma, hold their needles pretty good after cutting, and stay fresh for a reasonable amount of time. Favorite Christmas trees • Fraser Fir: Tops in terms of needle retention. This true fir has soft, dark green needles with a flash of silver underneath. A traditional spire shape and a nice aroma complete the package of what many call the ‘Cadillac of Christmas trees’. • Douglas Fir: The soft, true green needles have an almost citrus aroma

Balsam Fir

White Pine and fairly stiff branches for those heavier ornaments. Good needle retention and a full, dense look make this a very popular choice. • Concolor Fir: This fluffy and long needled true fir has waxy, bluish

needles that smell amazingly like oranges. Curved needles hold a long time and sweep up easy if they do fall. A beautiful and under used tree in our landscapes and at Christmas! • Canaan Fir: Native to West Virginia, but made popular by Ohio tree farmers and Ohio State University researchers. This is a newer variety with a wonderful balsam aroma and soft needles. A great, traditional spire shape, and good needle retention. • Balsam Fir: Similar to Canaan Fir but with a more open branching habit. Great balsam aroma and straight trunk. Fair needle retention. • Scotch Pine: An old favorite with a conical shape and medium 1 ½” long, pointy, but flexible needles. Good needle retention and relatively light weight. • White Pine: Long green needles on flexible branches give this tree a soft appearance. A light weight tree with good needle retention and clean smooth stem. The bendable branches make this a poor choice if you have heavy ornaments.

Oakland New Albany Nursery Manager George Kosko advises checking the water daily for a long-lasting tree.

Christmas tree care Preparation, placement and watering. That’s our motto here at Oakland Nursery when it comes to caring for your fresh cut, real tree. A little quality time spent preparing the tree, putting the tree in the right spot (Pssst, guys, measure your ceiling height), and watering daily, will greatly increase the chances of keeping your tree fresh for Santa’s visit. Choose a spot well away from heater vents, wood-burning stoves and intense southern sun exposures. Make a fresh cut not more than one hour before setting your tree into the stand, and immediately fill with fresh water. Check the water level several times the first two days and then daily thereafter. Avoid stringing old and worn-out lights on the branches and have a serious talk with the house kitty about climbing the tree! With hope and glad tidings, we hope your evergreen brings you all the best this holiday season!

Decorate with a nose toward inviting holiday aromas Holiday decor is as much about the sights and sounds as it is about the scents of the season. Few things evoke the holiday spirit as much as the aroma of fresh evergreen or spicy cinnamon and cloves. Incorporating inviting aromas into holiday decor can make homes feel even more special. Filling a home with fragrant decor takes a little ingenuity and planning. Here are some ideas to incorporate the scents of the holiday season into your decor. • Use a real Christmas tree. An easy way to create a pine-like scent indoors is to select a real Christmas tree. Ask the tree farm which varieties are the most fragrant. If a fresh tree is not possible, fill a decorative basket with pine cones and evergreen boughs for that woodsy appeal. • Create a seasonal scented simmer. Take to the stove to make a homemade air infusion from ingredients in and around the house. Simmer pine branches,

citrus peels, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, and whatever else can be placed in a pot or slow cooker with water. The scents will permeate the house for hours if enough water is added to the mixture. • Make holiday sachets. Some of the same ingredients for the holiday simmer can be dried and sewn into sachets. Add ribbon and hang on real or artificial

trees. Or tuck the pouches into various areas around the house. • Utilize essential oils. Natural food stores and other retailers may sell essential oils, which can be diluted and sprayed on surfaces or into the air. Exercise caution around upholstery, or test for staining before use. • Spend more time in the kitchen. Add delicious scents to the home by way of freshly baked goods or holiday meals. Nothing beats the smell of cookies right out of the oven, and the scents can linger for hours. • Make beeswax ornaments. Add scented oils to melted beeswax and pour into molds. Hang these creations as ornaments on trees or in other areas of the home. • Craft some “gingerbread” ornaments. A mixture of cinnamon, applesauce and glue can be used to make ornaments or gift tags that resemble gingerbread cookies, and these ornaments have more staying power than actual cookies.

25 ways to decorate for 25 days of Christmas By Jodi Dawson (Columbus Store Greenhouse Manager) & Kelly Martyn (Columbus Store Greens Manager)

much more! Novelties such as these are a fun easy way to transform your home for the holidays, instant decorations!

Christmas is coming, and we are so excited to start hanging the holly and decorating the tree. The holidays are such a magical time of the year, full of gift giving, family and entertaining friends. The holidays can be a bit stressful, but take a deep breath, Oakland Nursery is here to assist with you with your decorating and gift giving. Here are 25 fresh ideas to spruce up your home for the holiday, and be the talk of the town.

Make sure to drape garland around the banister of your staircase with live or artificial garland for an elegant look. Don’t forget the mantel! A classic look from every Christmas tradition, the mantel can always be dressed up with some garland and live greens. For a big impression add some ornaments, bows, and some candles.

1. Embellish Your Mailbox Easy! Oakland Nursery features over 20 different kinds of premade garland and swags to compliment any taste. For a classic look, secure the swag at the top of the mailbox with some paddle wire, and live garland wrapped around the pole. Embellish the look with a bow or a few ornaments for instant holiday cheer.

2. Window Boxes They are not just for spring and summer. Create an eye-catching arrangement by adding some magnolia leaves, evergreen branches, and a little sparkle here or there with picks. You can use the soil or an oasis block to hold your masterpiece in place. For an added touch of color contrast or height, include some Red Twig Dogwood or willow branches.

3. Embrace A Color Scheme The red and greens of a classic Christmas are what help make the holiday merry and bright. To create a more cohesive look incorporate the colors of your room that is festive and unique.

4. Make A Fairy Garden or Terrarium With the garden or terrarium already finished, place miniature trinkets among the plants to create a scene that can easily be changed along with a new season. Oakland Nursery carries an array of miniature doodads that can help transform your terrarium into a great conversation piece! A miniature gingerbread house here, a tiny candy cane there, a gumdrop road in front and you have created a cute little world right out of a storybook.

5. Display ornaments on your light fixture. Whether it be a whimsical array of colors or a sophisticated white and blue arrangement, your light fixture will bring some extra cheer to your dining room. For an extra touch, sprigs of eucalyptus, dark green cedar, or red winterberry can create an elegant draping effect amongst the lights. Please use caution if the lights are not LED.

6. Rearrange your house plants to compliment your decorating. Try amaryllis on the mantle, paperwhites in the kitchen, poinsettias by the fireplace and cyclamen on an end table. Add a few glittery sprigs to your palms, add a bow to your succulent pot, hang a few ornaments on your hanging baskets! Keep it fresh, merry, and bright!

7. Curb Appeal! After you put up all your lights, don’t put your ladder away! To create a rustic style, use the ladder as a canvas to set up your lights, mistletoe, and porch pots. To

8. Window Trimmings Have extra Christmas ornaments? There is a fun new trend popping up of displaying ornaments in your windows! Simply hang the ornaments from the top of your window frames at differing heights for a whimsical look and secure them with clear fishing line. To enhance the scene add some snowflakes and matching ribbon.

9. Shine Some Light Lanterns are making a comeback and we so happy they are! Classic and versatile lanterns can be decorated for every season, but Christmas may be our favorite style to create. To transform your lantern into a centerpiece for your coffee table, secure a few branches of white pine on the handle and the base with some boxwood. Fill the base with berries, small pinecones and glitter for a bit of glitz and glam. Take a look in our gift shop for the perfect LED Candle to help take your centerpiece up a notch.

10. Natural Elements If it wasn’t so blistering cold in Colorado, we like to think everyone would love to have a log cabin home in the mountains. But you can bring that rustic mountain feel of the holidays here to your home in Ohio. Feature some oversize pinecones from the Sugar Pine Trees out west in your porch pots, display branches of Western Red Cedar and White Pine with your favorite pair of skis over your fireplace. To really take it up a notch, light some Thyme’s Fraser Fir candles from our gift shop for the smell of the deep woods.

11. A Charles Dickens Christmas To create a scene from the pages of Charles Dickens, embrace the vintage elements of your home and frame your windows with greenery on your shutters. Extravagant greenery arrangements may look difficult from afar, but a few simple additions of boxwood and red cedar can create a beautiful draping effect. A wreath hung from the middle of the window with a bow and candle light inside will complete the look.

12. Adorn your gifts with greens and berries You can be a kid in a candy shop in our wreath room at Oakland, where we have shelves of ribbon and colorful sprigs as far as the eye can see. Whether it be velvet, scarlet red, bright blues, candy cane striped, stark white, soft burlap or classic candy apple red, we are happy to create custom made bows. Add a pick of glittery cedar, golden pinecones or frosted winterberry, to make a gift go from classic to elegant.

13. Icing on the Cake Christmas tree decorated? Check. Mistletoes hung? Check. Christmas lights up? Check. But wait, something is missing. It doesn’t feel complete. Remember those ice skates and antique sleds from when you were young collecting dust in the basement? Bring back old memories and really enhance the holiday decorating.

14. Porch Pots Porch pots have always been a classic addition for holiday decorating, but now there are fun new additions available to really take it up a level. Birch poles and winterberry are a great color combination with dark red cedar, boxwood and pine. A few sprigs of frosted pine cones, blue velvet bow, and glittery gold picks can create an elegant centerpiece that will withstand the winter weather. If you’re looking for a particular type of bow, we can create a custom one for you at one of our gift shops.

15. Birch Poles Birchwood is a beautiful addition for decorating any season, but the creamy white hues of the bark are a great contrast against the reds and greens of the holiday. Birchwood brings sophistication to a centerpiece or porch pot decoration. For window boxes, birch poles can be cut down to size to add some height and color with your greens. If you have a fireplace, a birch pole bundle adds an elegant touch. What is even better, birch poles are easily reusable for spring decorations outside or tomato stakes in your garden!

16. Glowing Luminaries Luminaries create a beautiful soft glow, and it is a fun activity for every family to put together. Decorating is sometimes a hassle, but luminaries are a simple project that creates a magical cozy glow to your front yard. We recommend using battery operated candles that come with remote controls, which you can find in one of our gift shop locations.

17. Fill cylinders or vases with holiday cheer

Orchids are associated as a tropical decoration, but we love how much of sophistication the stark white orchids bring to a holiday centerpiece. To start the arrangement, place the white orchids in a clear glass container or vase, then place the vase in a clear shallow bowl. Around the base of the orchid, fill the bowl with colorful stones complimenting your holiday motif. Anchor sprigs of white pine and boxwood in stones, so that they delicately drape and almost float around the orchid. Add whichever novelties you may love to compliment the look, and there you have your masterpiece.

21. Amaryllis Throughout the Home There are plenty of charming and dazzling ways to deck the halls, one of our favorite ways are with festive amaryllis flowers. Amaryllis can transform any room and thanks to new cultivation they come in a beautiful array of colors: dark reds for the kitchen, striped pink for the living room, dark burgundy for the bedroom, or even beautiful white for the entryway. For a flower that is so simple to grow, they provide such beauty and wonderful smell to brighten up any room.

22. Bird Bath For all those bird lovers out there! Just because your garden has gone dormant doesn’t mean a bird bath can’t look great for the holidays! To help your transform the look, place a gazing ball or an oversized ornament in the middle and place greens and berries around and finish with a bow. For an added touch, place a string of fairy lights throughout the greens for a bright fun glow.

23. Paperwhites Create some winter magic! We feature glass vases in our gift shop that are designed for paperwhites to be placed in! Not only is it an elegant addition, but it may surprise your guests as well.

For an unconventional fresh take on the holidays, use your favorite ornaments, dried hydrangea flowers and live greens in your favorite vase for a kitchen decoration. To bring in some brighter colors fill your vase with citrus fruit, berries, Red Twig Dogwood, and red cedar for an easy festive decoration. If you have any extra pots or vases, this is an easy decoration that doesn’t require much maintenance for the other rooms of your house as well.

24. Wheelbarrow Full of Cheer

18. Home Decor

25. Succulent Wreath

Lining the shelves of Oakland Gift shops are beautiful new lines of Christmas novelties and home decor. Examples include paintings of winter wonderland, fun quirky Christmas doormats, throw pillows, Fraser fir candles, dinnerware and

Using a succulent wreath is a chic twist on holiday decorating! Embellish the walls or doors with them, or use it as a centerpiece with a candle in the middle. Oakland features premade succulent wreaths in our greenhouse.

A worn-out vintage wheelbarrow has character and potential that can be used as a fun home decor project. Fill to the brim with greens, berries, shovels and hand trowels to show your love of gardening. Why not add some garland around the handles or support braces underneath!

There’s no place like Home for the Holidays By Kriss Rogers Oakland Inside & Out Gift Store Manager

With the arrival of the holiday season the focus is on togetherness and reconnecting with friends and family to celebrate the season. Whether your decorating tastes are traditional, vintage or totally fresh, it’s time to deck the halls! Holiday is a magical time of year and especially during the holidays we want our homes to have a feeling of warmth, connection and well-being. Social media has transformed home décor in a big way, bringing trends like farmhouse and botanical accents into home fashion. Instagram is the second most popular social network after Facebook. It’s a great source for finding or sharing ho liday decorating ideas and a great source of holiday inspiration. Here are some of the trends we see heading into Holiday 2019

Natural and Authentic There has been a continuing interest in natural materials. A lot of natural elements like bark, metal, birch and even reclaimed wood. This trend is a mix of neutrals with warm wood tones and shades of green to create a calm and serene holiday feel. The natural look adds an organic element to your living space.

Mad for Plaid These frosty fellows always bring a big dose of whimsy and cheer to your holiday vibe. A true holiday classic.

Plaids will never go out of style as a classic holiday decoration. Tartan and buffalo plaids are major fashion trends this season and it translates into holiday décor in items like ornaments, ribbon and textiles like pillows and throws. Plaid blends well with both modern and retro pieces which can be anything from the 1920s to the 1980s. Putting a new spin on retro pieces is referred to as newstalgia. A mix of neutrals, white, ivory, warmer shades of taupe and grey with metallics and pale pastels create a clean and simple look. The concept of Hygge has been around for a few years but it is still trending in holiday décor with a Nordic look that appeals to those who want a less cluttered look with a traditional holiday feel.

Seasonal Shimmer

Holiday party accessories

Warm metallics are the shining star this holiday season; the shine is reduced and aged look is trending. Try mixing copper, bronze and gold together for a beautiful seasonal shimmer. These metallic hues will fit nicely into almost any style. Think of these metallic accents like a fashion accessory for your holiday look, use elements like decorative pillows, throws and other accent pieces to complete the look.

Cheers to your next holiday party! Make sure you complete the look of your event with all the finishing touches like serve ware and cocktail napkins. A great way to add a holiday feel to the dining room is to keep the table set, create a beautiful holiday tablescape and leave it set for everyone to enjoy. Add warmth to the living room by adding some decorative pillows. To complete the look at the front door you can add a festive seasonal mat for a warm holiday welcome. Create some fresh curb appeal by updating the front porch planters; just add a few sticks or birch limbs and oversized ornaments. Choose looks from elegant to whimsical to create your own distinctive holiday feel.

Botanicals

Holiday collections You may have seen the #shelfie hashtag popping up in social media lately especially if you are an Instagram user. #shelfie is a play on the selfie hashtag and describes a beautifully decorated shelf. This holiday, focus on making your holiday décor more about you and your family. Think about the story that your holiday collection of memorabilia can tell. Ask your family members to select a piece that helps tell the story and add it to the vignette; it’s a fun and inclusive way to decorate. Mix in seasonal accents with some everyday pieces to create the perfect #holidayshelfie.

Colors of the Season

Seasonal shimmer is a great way to add sparkle to your holiday décor. This look can be added with metal, fabric or glass.

A beautiful wreath on the front door can greet your holiday guests all season long with an entrance to remember.

This is an easy and economical way to accessorize your holiday home. Items like Eucalyptus, Winterberry and Boxwood, when paired with vases, planters or baskets add warmth and dimension to any holiday décor. Use pinecones, grapevine or magnolia leaves, they easily make the transition from fall to holiday and can even be repurposed thru winter with a simple accent color change.

KEY DECORATING PIECES Wreaths Welcome nature inside, greenery and flowers add freshness to any indoor space. Real or faux, indoors or out, wreaths can bring an instant holiday feel to any room on a door, a wall or as a centerpiece. You can brighten your door simply by adding a wreath, make it your own by adding lights, ribbons or holiday ornaments that match your home’s decor.

*** The goal is to make your home cozy and inviting for friends and family. Have fun with your holiday decorating, let your imagination be your inspiration and you will be amazed at your results. Take time to enjoy the season with family and friends and create memories you will cherish for years to come. Let us help you make the season special and assist you with all your gift and decorating solutions. Make Oakland Nursery your holiday destination, we hope to see you soon at Oakland Inside & Out!

Ornaments Not just on the tree, but in vases, bowls, wreaths or swags. Think outside the tree and fill a pretty bowl or a glass vase with colorful glass ornaments for a glittering centerpiece. Blue themed trees are trending with blue ornaments making a splash for holiday 2019 in a wide range of shades ranging from subtle to bold and bright.

Candles Of all the senses, smell is tied closest to memory. Great holiday and winter fragrances evoke nostalgic memories and help to create that cozy, cuddle up, comfortable Hygge feeling. Make your home smell like Christmas, use scented candles with scents that evoke fond holiday memories. Candles provide an instant glow that transforms the mood of the room. Use an assortment of sizes like pillars, tapers, and tea lights to keep it interesting.
