f you’re like most women today, your to-do list is long. You have work obligations. Obligations to your significant other. To your children. To your parents. To volunteer gigs, to your neighborhood, to your household, to your pets, your friends … the list goes on and on. But where are you on that list? It’s time for you to care for yourself. While at-home treatments can provide a temporary, inexpensive fix, lasting results require a professional’s expertise. From minor treatments to in-depth cosmetic procedures, Columbus clinics offer a range of services that will have you looking and feeling your best with little or no downtime for recovery. “We can make people look different, but not in a way where everybody is going to walk up and say, ‘Oh, you had this and this and this done,’ ” says Dr. Mary Beth Mudd, founder of the New You Center for Advanced Medical Aesthetics. “In good hands, you’ll look better, but not in a way that someone can put their finger on. It doesn’t have to look obvious.” Read on for a sampling of what’s available from local pros.

AccuTite What it is: Radiofrequency technology delivers a treatment that boosts collagen and contracts subdermal tissues in the neck, under the chin, on the eyebrow and elsewhere. It’s an improvement on ultherapy, a similar treatment that uses ultrasound to stimulate collagen production over time. Who it’s ideal for: Those with mild to moderate skin laxity or sagging Potential side effects/drawbacks: There may be some bruising and swelling, and it will take time to see the full effects. The expert says: “AccuTite uses energy to heat the cells that produce collagen, but also contracts the fibers in the fibroseptal network—which sits under the skin to help tighten skin—so we can see some immediate contraction and skin tightening, as well as the delayed results from actual collagen production,” says Mudd. “Why [AccuTite] is really interesting to me is that you can use controlled heat to do procedures like a nonsurgical blepharoplasty [eyelift], and apply it to places where traditional ultheraphy would cause nerve damage,” Mudd says. “The way that this field is expanding is just amazing to me.”
CoolSculpting
Cryotherapy facial What it is: Liquid nitrogen freezes the body’s superficial layers of tissue, reducing fat cells, increasing collagen production and treating acne and scarring. Who it’s ideal for: In addition to helping those wishing to plump up the skin on their faces, cryotherapy facials’ anti-inflammatory properties may help people with such skin conditions as eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis.

Potential side effects/drawbacks: Done incorrectly, cryotherapy can damage skin and lead to scarring. The expert says: “The whole idea of this is that we want to start making the skin act younger,” says Jaclyn Peresetsky, CEO and founder of Skin Perfect Spas and founder of the newly opened Skin Perfect University, which advances education for those in the beauty biz. “We want to encourage the body to make more collagen and elastin, but we don’t want to inflame it—inflammation is aging. This is a totally different way of thinking compared to when I first got into the field.”
Eyelash extensions What it is: A technician hand-glues extensions on top of your regular lashes, leaving you with thicker, longer and darker eyelashes. With proper care, they can last six to eight weeks. Who it’s ideal for: Extensions are great for women who want to skip a step in their morning beauty routine, since they make mascara unnecessary. Potential side effects/drawbacks: An unskilled technician can leave you with bad-looking lashes, or worse—an eyelid or cornea infection. Some lash adhesives can irritate eyelids.

What it is: A nonsurgical fat-freezing treatment that delivers precisely controlled cooling to target fat cells under the skin, while leaving the skin itself undisturbed. You can go right back to work afterward. Who it’s ideal for: Someone who works out and eats healthfully, but still struggles with trouble spots Potential side effects/drawbacks: Redness, swelling and some bruising are possible. The expert says: “When you walk out the door, you don’t look like you’ve had anything done—which is good in one way, because no one knows you were here, but on the other hand, that means you’re going to have to wait a little while for results,” says Mudd, who adds that it takes about six to eight weeks to see initial results.

a clinical aesthetician with Columbus Aesthetic & Plastic Surgery. The injections are the spa’s most common treatment—and Anderson has experienced it firsthand. “I started when I was 23, and I’m 51 now,” she says. “People are like, ‘You have no wrinkles.’ I always tell my younger clients, ‘Start now, because it’s preventative.’ ”
Injectables What it is: A variety of injectable treatments can help you look younger. They include Botox; fillers like Juvederm, Voluma, Volbella, Perlane and Restylane; and Sculptra, a collagen stimulator that can boost collagen production and correct deep wrinkles and folds on your facial skin. These are not permanent, and results last for weeks or years, depending on the product.
Who it’s ideal for: Those who want immediate results Potential side effects/drawbacks: Pain, inflammation, swelling and redness at the injection sites. If Botox spreads beyond the intended area, conditions such as droopy eyelids are possible. The expert says: “Everyone in Ohio loves Botox,” says Marcella Brooks Anderson,
What it is: In laser hair removal, the hair follicle absorbs gentle pulses of energy, which prevents regrowth. Treatments typically take several sessions. When it comes to skin rejuvenation, laser treatments include the Halo Hybrid Fractional laser (to counteract sun damage and fine lines), BroadBand Light laser (to treat freckles, age spots, small blood vessels, acne and uneven skin texture), Contour TRL Laser Peel (deep wrinkles and spots) and the YAG laser (rosacea, redness and spider veins). Who it’s ideal for: The spectrum of options in laser skin treatments means a range of people can benefit from the procedure. Potential side effects/drawbacks: Swelling and redness. In some cases, you should plan on limiting sun exposure for a day.
JASON B. LICHTEN, M.D. Understanding that the human body is the finest work of art is what motivated board-certified plastic surgeon Jason B. Lichten, MD, to start his own cosmetic surgery practice, Central Ohio Plastic Surgery, in 2005. Dr. Lichten, voted by his peers as a Top Doctor, specializes in surgical rejuvenation, reconstruction and revision procedures, including breast augmentation, tummy tucks and facelifts, as well as nonsurgical injectables and minimally invasive laser treatments for veins, tattoos and facial resurfacing. Lichten believes plastic surgery is not about becoming someone you’re not, but rather about choosing to express yourself in the way you want to look and feel. Even as an in-demand surgeon, Lichten still manages to have a reassuring bedside manner, a great sense of humor (ask about his family’s annual Thanksgiving whipped cream fight in matching jammies) and a whole-hearted dedication to making sure his patients make informed decisions.

Light therapies What it is: Many concerns can be addressed thanks to the variety of available light therapies, including Gentle Waves (an LED treatment for aging skin that slows the breakdown of collagen and hastens its production), NeoLTS (which employs red and infrared light to stimulate hair follicles) and CureLight, which uses red and blue light to address redness and inflammation from acne and rosacea. Who it’s ideal for: Almost anyone can see benefit from light therapies. Potential side effects/drawbacks: Multiple visits often are needed for treatment to be most effective.
VARICOSE VEINS HAVE NO BUSINESS making me feel uncomfortable wearing a skirt. Suffer No Longer
Microneedling What it is: A pen-shaped device with a cluster of needles that makes tiny holes in the skin, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. Treatment typically takes 15 to 45 minutes; multiple initial treatments and ongoing maintenance treatments are recommended. Who it’s ideal for: Someone wanting to counteract signs of aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles. Potential side effects/drawbacks: Redness can last a couple of days and sensitivity a bit longer.

Microblading What it is: This style of cosmetic tattooing uses a small tool with several tiny needles to deposit pigment and make thin eyebrows appear naturally lush and full. The process takes less than two hours and lasts up to three years. Who it’s ideal for: People who have overplucked or naturally thin eyebrows, or who may have patchy brows because of scars or other issues Potential side effects/drawbacks: An unskilled practitioner can leave you with misshapen brows, scarring or infections. More typical, however, is discomfort during the process itself. The expert says: “Microblading looks natural; it looks like hair, it doesn’t look ‘off,’ ” says Anderson. After all of this work in a spa, salon or doctor’s office, you shouldn’t discount the wellness component, the experts say. Pairing healthy habits—eschewing smoking, eating healthfully, working out and mitigating stress through activities such as yoga or meditation—with your treatments “will always get better, quicker results,” than cosmetic procedures alone, says Peresetsky.
