“Art in Bloom,” this year’s garden showcase, truly was an artful masterpiece that stirred the senses. Trickling sounds from waterfalls and fountains played Mother Nature’s tunes while blooming spring flowers such as tulips, daffodils and hyacinths provided eye-catching color and sweet smells. Through his camera lens, photographer John Knouff captured the artistry of the Wood Landscape Services garden on page 44. Throughout the gardens, landscape designers employed low stonelike walls to define their gardens while also providing shape and texture. On page 40, Michael Leach speaks with some of the show’s landscapers about how homeowners might use similar hardscapes in their own yards. When combined with plant life, these decorative and structural walls make a big visual impact. If seeking to create visual impact inside the home, look no further than “Grand Entrances,” our cover feature. These elaborate foyers are designed to leave a lasting impression on guests long after they’ve departed. Dramatic foyers often share design characteristics such as soaring ceilings, custom woodwork and grand staircases. Deciding how to design and decorate such large spaces can intimidate homeowners. Interior designer Sally McDonald offers advice on how to dress these challenging spaces beautifully on page 10. Throughout this issue, we hope to provide readers with the tools to make an impact in their own personal spaces, whether indoors or out. Spring is the time for renewal and new beginnings, so get busy. Take a page or two of fresh idea seeds from Central Ohio Home & Garden magazine to plant in your own home and watch how they grow into someplace beautiful. Our Best,

grand ENTRANCES From floor to ceiling, beautiful foyers make flawless first impressions by KATHERINE HARBEN
F
or some homeowners, making a grand entrance can inspire serious stage fright. Choosing entryway architecture and design elements that immediately will impress yet remain timeless — surviving evolving interior design styles and trends — can feel a bit like dabbling in fortune telling. Décor, like fashion, is constantly on the move. But today, many homeowners are offering a confident “welcome back” to a formal entry element of bygone eras. Soaring two-story foyers are making a comeback in the blueprint of the American dream home. “We’re seeing entries as sort of a big deal again,” says Sally McDonald, interior designer and owner of Interiorworks in Columbus. “(The entry) is the place where you welcome guests into your home, and you want (it) to invite them in.” Central Ohio Home & Garden recently visited a handful of beautiful central Ohio homes with entrances that inspire. McDonald shares the fundamental elements that dress these in-demand foyers — and others like them — to impress. Among the most important, she says, is to keep such a dramatic space understated. She sees a trend toward simple elegance that doesn’t shout at guests as they walk through the door. Other than that, it’s just a matter of personal taste, budget and home style. “People do want something out of the ordinary,” McDonald says. »

Large foyers demand focal point lighting.
Classic architecture and design never go out of style in this nearly 100year-old Bexley-area mansion. Original stained glass lets in light that is beautiful and functional.

A large chandelier, lantern or series of mini-chandeliers add drama to any space.
Fashion Underfoot
Foyer floors are demanding. They usually possess a softness that welcomes or an attention-grabbing element, but they also need to be durable and stain resistant. After all, homeowners, family and guests will track in more than compliments on the décor. “(Homeowners want) a good floor that can take some weathering and people in and out,” McDonald says. A dark-colored or patterned rug — or a few — will help disguise dirt beautifully. Even carpet or patterned wood and tile can accommodate a decorative rug, such as Oriental, in complementary colors or style. Underneath the foyer rug, hard-surface flooring reigns supreme. Marble is still a popular choice, though McDonald says homeowners are trending toward honed or rough-finished natural marble looks. “It’s a little more earthy,” she says. “(It’s) not so fancy, polished or formidable. (It’s) a little quieter, not that McMansions look.” She sees a lot of stone and hardwood, once again in subdued, aged or distressed finishes such as French limestone or wider hand-scraped wood boards. Oak is still popular for its beauty and durability. When using marble or stone, homeowners want larger pieces, McDonald says, such as tiles 16 to 24 square inches. Her clients also request decorative wood and tile designs. On stairs, McDonald likes to use patterned carpet runners with brass stair rods. Runners allow the stairs underneath to peek out on each side. Often, the top of each stair is stained to match the stairway banister, while the foot of each stair is painted to match trim throughout the room or home.
Design That’s Way Over Their Heads
A multistory foyer is the height of elegance within a home. “If we’re talking grand, we’re talking plenty of head room,” McDonald says. Because these entries are a few stories high, McDonald likes to paint ceilings in an exotic or sky-mimicking shade to make crown molding stand out. She usually uses abundant molding around high ceilings to form a 2- to 3-foot canopy. Molding rolls up over the walls and onto the ceiling itself. In addition, a ceiling medallion gives chandeliers, pendant lights or other ceiling fixtures a classic, finished look that draws attention. “You’ve got a little bit more going on up there,” she says.
Seeing Is Believing
When lighting a large foyer, practicality is important. Wall sconces, lamps, recessed lighting or pendant lights can be used stylishly in strategic spots that don’t receive a lot of natural light. “You’ve got to get someone down those stairs safely,” McDonald says. An entry table, chest or bench with a lamp is a must, she »
TO MAKE A BIG ENTRANCE, JUST SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF LOOKING UP
Soaring foyer ceilings call for grandeur. Coffering, large and dramatic crown molding, and sky-mimicking or colorful paint can make a dramatic first-impression when used with careful editing.
DOWN BELOW
Hard surface flooring such as honed marble, wood or tile can take a licking and keep on ticking beautifully in a hightraffic entry.
COVER-UP
Oriental, natural fiber or intricately patterned rugs hide dirt and other wear and tear that naturally comes with a busy foyer.
BRIGHT IDEAS
Adequate light is a must. How else will guests see all of a foyer’s lovely details? Sconces, lamps, pendant lights and chandeliers make a statement while shedding light on areas where natural or recessed lighting might not reach, such as the middle of the stairway.
ONE STEP AT A TIME
The stairway often is the focal point of an entry. Stairway carpeting used with brass carpet rods provides a classic look, while iron railings that resemble modern sculpture almost eliminate the need for art on the walls.
WELL-FURNISHED
A round table placed on an entryway rug and topped with flowers, a lamp and family photographs provides guests with a warm welcome. A statement storage piece such as an antique armoire or dresser can provide a beautiful place for mail, keys and other odds and ends.

adds, to function as a drop zone for keys, mail or other odds and ends. Those coming or going also will appreciate a mirror. Umbrella stands — also used to hold walking sticks in those grand foyers of yore — are making a comeback, says McDonald. In large entries with generous floor space, a small round table resting on a statement rug makes a nice centerpiece for a room, while a tall and dramatic flower arrangement and some decorative elements complete the look. “Just (have) pretty things as you walk in the house that set the tone,” McDonald says. In addition to practical illumination, large foyers demand focal point lighting. A large chandelier, lantern or series of mini-chandeliers add drama to any space. “Twenty years ago, we would have seen a big, shiny brass chandelier,” McDonald says. Today, she sees a lot more variety. Iron or brushed metal chandeliers are popular and often feature clean-lined mod14

ern shapes and styles. Vintage- or lantern-style fixtures also are popular, McDonald says.
Picking Wallflowers
Big entries call for color, pattern or art to break up soaring multistory walls. “Two-stories is a lot to be just one color, no pattern, no separation,” McDonald says. She often uses wainscoting on stairways, or wallpaper to provide interest and depth. If homeowners have a boldly colored foyer ceiling or the rest of the home is brightly painted, she recommends milder shades for entry walls. “I tend to think of entries as neutrals, but if you do neutrals in the rest of the house, you can do color (in the entry),” McDonald says. Tone-on-tone striped wallpaper is a personal favorite of the designer, but she doesn’t recommend it for two-story foyers where it can overwhelm a room. A less-uniform pattern halfway up the wall works better. »

Best of Home Art is another way to break up big walls. It also provides visitors with clues to a home’s overall style. “It sort of sets the tone,” McDonald says. As far as what artwork is appropriate, almost anything goes. Oversized prints, paintings or photographs bring drama to multistory walls, but they also can make a bold statement in a one-story entry. Because guests can access art in a foyer better than, say, art hanging on a wall above a couch, it is a great spot for showing off smaller prized pieces as well. “(The foyer) is a nice place to hang art people want to get close to, to walk up and examine,” McDonald says. And art isn’t limited by available wall space. A small personal collection of pottery or a sculptural piece on an entry table or on a second-floor landing can wow guests just as effectively. The key is to create a welcoming and inviting foyer that provides guests with an appetizer for the main course of the home. Though most modern homeowners are not as bold when mixing paint colors or wallpaper patterns as were their Victorian cousins, the grand entrance is a timeless and welcoming detail that always will have a place in some of America’s most beautiful homes.

Fare Season A
When spring is the secret ingredient in an easy, elegant brunch, eggs aren’t the only things sunny-side up
fter a season of hearty soup, casserole and pasta cravings, spring brings an equally robust desire for something different. Like the expectation of an empty blue ocean of sky, spring creates a yen for light, uncomplicated fare. And with the seasonal shedding of holiday parties and winter layers, comes an itch to play host without the hassle. After all, who wants to spend hours in the kitchen when the greener grass on the other side of the back door is calling? A midafternoon brunch might be the perfect spring fling to satisfy all. than dinner and lending itself to more variety than breakfast or lunch, brunch is a light affair full of spring possibility. These simple and sunny brunch recipes courtesy of Tastefully Simple, The Pampered Chef and Heavenly Dips use prepared foods and time-saving cooking tools that free up hosts to mingle without mangling the menu. Because the best spring fare, like spring fun, is easy-going, brunch hosts can spend their time enjoying the season’s outdoor delights, rather than hours whipping up complicated delights of their own in the kitchen. » SPRING 2010

FOUR SEASONS SUNROOMS
ROOMS t’s about time. Showers, flowers and sunny skies are on the horizon, and stir-crazy homeowners can’t wait to spring into their backyards to enjoy the view. But why wait? Outdoor access need not be limited by the seasons — even here in central Ohio. In fact, communing with nature doesn’t necessarily mean enduring the elements, bugs or potential sunburn at all. What if homeowners could window-shop the outdoors anytime of year? Sunrooms, garden rooms, patio rooms — whatever homeowners call them and whichever style they prefer, three- or four-season rooms allow effortless outdoor admiration. With copious windows smartly placed to utilize the sunshine, view and breeze, these room additions blur the boundary between »

home and the great wide open. “It’s not just an extension of the house,” says Jeff Borovetz, president of central Ohio sunroom builder Suncraft. “It’s a vacation at home.” Whether homeowners hire a traditional builder or one specializing in multiseason rooms, there are a few details they will want to be crystal clear on before beginning a window-centric renovation or addition.
FOUR SEASONS SUNROOMS
“It’s not just an extension of the house. It’s a vacation at home.”
HEART OF GLASS
Homeowners often choose to upgrade decks or patios into sunroom-style additions, Borovetz says. The more all-season, the better. For instance, a screen porch protects from sun, rain and bugs, but a three-season room adds windows to moderate temperature somewhat, and thus, extend usage into fall or even winter. With the coziest view, an insulated all-season addition is completely temperature controlled to allow year-round room for the view. “You can hang out in your pajamas in winter,” says Jim Best, general manager of Home Improvement from Rosati. Three- and four-season rooms feature the same high-quality windows manufacturers use throughout a home. Best says his company usually uses efficient low-emissivity, or “low-e,” glass that reflects radiant heat and ultraviolet light. This also helps protect furniture and window coverings from fading. Any indoor or outdoor furniture can be incorporated into a three- or four-season room. Although heavily focused on windows, only some multiseason rooms feature all-glass roofs — usually conservatories or solariums. But almost all incorporate some glass overhead by using windowed gables or generously sized skylights. For consistency, window style usually mimics what is used throughout the rest of a home. Windows and trim come in dozens of colors or can be color-matched.
ACCORDING TO CUSTOM
Though prefabricated sunrooms can be had, most companies custom design these spaces as they would any room addition. They can be aluminum, vinyl or wood-frame construction. Due to the level of customization, multiseason rooms can be added to an existing home and still appear as if part of the original structure. “We design it to look like it fits with the house,” Borovetz says. “If the house has cedar trim, we do cedar trim. If » SPRING 2010

By Design it has a steeped roof, we’ll do a steeped roof. It just maintains the character of the original house.” Best says sunrooms can be blended into almost any home with any yard topography. Homeowners usually choose rectangular or square-shaped rooms, he says, because simple is less expensive. The company specializes in sunrooms with cedar interiors. “It’s a nice warm look, (it) feels good,” Best says. “It gives a different feel from the rest of the house.” Best and Borovetz recommend carefully considering garden room placement. Homeowners want to make the most of their views and think about how much sun a certain spot will get year-round. It would be a shame, Borovetz says, to pay for a wall of windows that faces a fence or that will be covered by blinds much of the year. Builders have architects to assist homeowners with designing the right room for the right area. But before the team decides where to plunk down a new view to the outdoors, they also will consider a host of factors, including how homeowners will use their rooms and what will go in them, any historic or association codes that might apply, where second-story windows or balconies sit and more. “Every yard (and home) is different,” Borovetz says. “The
whole package is what we design. We take all that into consideration.” Homeowners also should consider the proximity of their neighbors. They might choose a windowless wall on the side where their yard abuts the house next door, or a partial wall with fewer windows on that side. Many homeowners like to create large, modern family spaces by placing their sunrooms against open kitchens or living areas, Best says. He has noticed that homeowners often add a garden room as part of a “staycation” overhaul accompanied by a new deck or patio, landscaping upgrades and even an outdoor kitchen. A high-end three-season room starts at about $20,000, Borovetz estimates, while a four-season room starts around $30,000. They can be built year-round, but spring is especially busy, he says. A typical design and build process takes a few months. Homeowners should plan ahead, say Best and Borovetz, so they can begin enjoying their year-round vacation view as soon as possible. “We are able to create a really nice experience,” Borovetz says. “When we get done, we’ve transformed (the house) into a new space. (Homeowners) take a new interest in their backyard(s).”

Retaining walls do more than provide order outdoors
I
t’s easy to see why homeowners would be interested in something that complements every plant in their yards, enhances their homes, needs little care and makes their neighbors green with envy. There are few hardscape structures that have more visual impact than a landscape wall. They can be low, freestanding structures used mainly for aesthetic effect or can be built to shoulder the load of a hillside and create a terraced landscape that makes mowing or planting easier. Walls create a sense of elevation, even 40

where there is none naturally. Just a few tiers of stone wrapping the end of a landscape bed can add a sense of height. Stone, brick or cleverly disguised concrete walls can be built to complement nearly any home and flatter the flowers and leaves of perennials, shrubs and trees. Trained to grow over a wall in a sunny locale, for instance, rambling roses and clematis connote the romance of an English garden. Hostas, coral bells and other shade-loving characters seem to glow when planted against the backdrop of a retaining wall. When those
same roses and perennials lie dormant under snow, the handsome wall remains a wintry focal point. Some gardeners use walls for growing flowers and herbs. Pockets of soil can be placed between stones and then filled with creeping phlox and rock garden plants, says Bryan Joyce, an Oakland Nursery landscape designer. All this visual appeal takes muscle, money and a little engineering, so homeowners should make a plan before starting. “It’s not something you want to do on a whim,” says Larry Burchfield, owner of Cedarbrook Landscaping. “It’s a bold texture for the most part, an immediate focal point. It will attract the eye.” Landscape professionals say small-scale wall-building is an achievable DIY project for most homeowners. Dry-laid walls are easiest to install. Here, stones are placed atop one another up to about 3 feet high. Harder to do are mortared walls made of brick or stone. And depending on the size of an embankment, hiring professional help might be the best option. “The biggest problem is drainage,” says
Off-The-Wall Basics Factors to consider when building walls: • Select materials that echo a home’s look and color. • Check with local government about rules governing construction. • Before digging, check with utility companies to mark underground lines. • Dig deep for mortared walls. A mortared wall base or footer must be 30 to 36 inches deep to ensure it’s below the soil freeze line. • Install tile to improve drainage around retaining walls, especially if there’s water flowing from roofs or areas higher up the slope. • Build retaining wall sections of 2-1/2 to 3 feet tall before creating the next terrace and wall. Limiting height will make walls less likely to topple.
Chris Henthorne, owner of Henthorne Landscape. “You can build the prettiest wall that’s nice and plumb and even,” he says of weight-bearing retaining walls. “If you don’t have the drainage right, it will start buckling.” Water causes soil to expand and contract during freeze-thaw cycles. This pressure affects wall stability, the pros say. Before erecting a wall, dig a trench 6 to 12 inches deep and fill it with crushed limestone. Backfill with gravel along the walls to aid drainage. Homeowners also will improve stability of walls on a slope by “battering,” or laying each tier 1/2 to 1 inch farther in than the one below. This results in a gently stepped wall resembling the sides of a pyramid. Concrete blocks that interlock make battering and assembly easier. They work a bit like giant Legos. However, make sure the first tier is perfectly level, or imperfections will be magnified into “bubbles” in tiers above, Henthorne says. The end result might be a bit of work, but it’s a small investment for enormous visual returns.

ART of the SEASON There was more than art blooming in the Central Ohio Home & Garden Show’s Garden Showcase this year. Everywhere one looked, spring inspiration was growing on trees — and every other plant imaginable. Beauty, color and creativity sprouted from the show’s 10-of-a-kind garden landscapes, such as this one from Wood Landscape Services featuring kinetic sculptures from central Ohio artist David M. Morgan. From bee-inspired elements and flowing water to Parisian influences, movie magic and art-deco cool, the showcase gardens were full of enough eye-catching plant life and showstopping design to inspire any homeowner to start crafting their own backyard work of art. 44
