Editor’s Note
Ready for A refresh?
W
e put this issue together with a broad concept in mind— refresh. Every year, spring brings us that opportunity, right? The earth transforms, and so can we. Yep, it’s a loftier goal than, say, cleaning a closet. (Though I would most definitely never undermine that project—or its value!) But a little life change here or there—whether it’s as simple as a new candle, as indulgent as a spa day or as heady as a job switch—is worth some thought. And I hope this issue gives you a few ideas to consider. Want to change your attitude? We introduce some intriguing women, including two Olympians, whose accomplishments—and setbacks—may inspire you. One is Stephanie Hightower—a worldrecord-holding hurdler and undeniably strong public figure. As I was interviewing one of her friends, she talked in awe about the mental capacity it must take to do what Hightower did so well for so many years. “Can you imagine running as fast as you can, and then jumping hurdles, and the idea that even if a toenail hits that hurdle, what it would do to you?” said Kathy Ransier, Hightower’s friend. “But she did it over and over and over. It’s an idea of such confidence, and such focus, and such dedication. She understands a win.” Another is Marcy Hinzmann-Harris, a Worthington-bred ice skater who competed in the Olympics and, after years traveling the world, has returned home to teach the sport she loves. At one point in time, before a competition that would help determine whether she and her partner made it to the Olympic Games, the tiny athlete’s knee blew out. But despite doctors’ concerns, she refused surgery for months. “I kind of knew my boundary and had tunnel vision,” she said. “I was like, ‘I’m going to give it all I’ve got.’ ”

Want to change your career? Columbus computer expert LeAnne Absalom yearned for a job that made her happy—something that would make her a role model for her daughters. So she founded a jewelry company that is thrilling women here and helping others around the world. Want to change your look? A new pair of shoes can put more bounce in your step. Want to change your stress level? An Eastern-inspired spa treatment may do the trick. Want to change your surroundings? Find ideas in our spread of stunning homes. Want to change your relationships? Reconnect with friends over a casual dinner party. (I tried each and every dish during our photo shoot, and let me tell you, girls, they are as delicious as they look!) A refresh can be tiny or grand, daychanging or life-changing. Either way, life shouldn’t be boring, and neither should you. Consider this tale, etched on a beautiful silver bracelet I found at Collier West and featured in this issue. “Come to the edge,” he said. They said, “We are afraid.” “Come to the edge,” he said. They came. He pushed them and they flew. Change—even that of the small variety— can be scary. But isn’t it fun to fly?

It generates that money in several ways, including concession tips and teddy bear sales (Nicklaus’ nickname is “The Golden Bear”). But perhaps most notably, it donates dollars for every hour its many volunteers work. And those volunteers are the backbone of the tournament. “It’s a pretty large group that makes it work, and they do an amazing job,” said Angie Fallon, who oversees hundreds of volunteers as chair of the Women’s Division Committee. Stephanie Hightower hurdled her way into record books and onto the United States Olympic Team. Then, she channeled her drive into local politics. Suddenly, she remembered that famed runner Stephanie Hightower—an acquaintance who lived a couple blocks away—knew a track coach at the school. So she dialed Hightower’s number
to make a brief plea. “By the time I hung up, she was in my house,” said Ransier, a Columbus attorney. “Seriously.” Hightower looked at the ailing mother and said, simply, “I’ve got it covered.” She had contacted the coach, and the coach had dispatched people to the young man’s apartment. He called immediately. It was a tremendous relief on a gut-wrenching day. And while Ransier still chokes

on emotion at the memory, Hightower’s entrance makes her laugh. “I tease her that this is when I knew,” she said, “she was a world-class sprinter.” It’s also when she was truly introduced to the woman behind the name, and she liked the woman so well that their casual friendship has transformed into a sister-like bond. Stephanie Hightower, 52, was a world-class hurdler, first for Ohio State University, and then for the United States. After retiring from running, she started working in politics, eventually becoming the controversial president of the Columbus Public Schools Board of Education. news for decades, as has her personality. And yes—she is driven and focused, strong-willed and outspoken, well-traveled and well-dressed. She expects a lot from those around her (just ask her son), and sometimes forgets others may not share her competitive drive (just ask her). “Stephanie’s got a very powerful aura about her,” said Denny Griffith, president of the Columbus College of Art & Design. “She’s got splendid energy and intellect. I think the Olympian’s drive that’s in her is something you can’t really hold back.” But Griffith and the rest of her inner circle says there’s also more—a faith she doesn’t wear on her sleeve, a killer sense of humor and, yes, a soft side (though never if her son leaves a mess in her meticulously kept kitchen). s a teen in Kentucky, Hightower had her sights set on one university— Tennessee State. It boasted a nationally recognized track and field program, and was the alma mater of her idol, Wilma Rudolph. But the coach told her she was too slow. So Hightower enrolled at Ohio State. There, she was coached by an Olympian who had competed in her signature event—the 60-meter hurdles. By her second year as a Buckeye, Hightower was working toward a singular feat—competing in the Olympics. “Everything I did—in my body, in my mind, in my activities—was geared toward making the 1980 Olympic team,” she said. Meanwhile, she became a four-time All-American and 15-time Big Ten champion, never losing in the 60-meter dash, 60-meter hurdles or 100-meter hurdles from 1977-1980. She competed in Madison Square Garden, and in that hallowed venue set a world record in the 60-yard hurdles—7.36 seconds—that still stands. And she made the Olympic team. But because of political conflict, President Jimmy Carter decided to boycott the Olympic Games in Moscow. Hightower wouldn’t have a chance to compete for the medal she was favored to win. “It was definitely
devastating,” she said. So, she recalibrated, and decided to try for the 1984 Olympic Games. She graduated from Ohio State and put her career on hold to train three hours each morning and three or four more each night. She traveled around the world and made money racing. Adidas paid her to wear their shoes. She was the favorite to win the next gold medal. But in Los Angeles, at the Olympic trials that determine who the country sends to the games, she ran a bad race. In a photo finish that is still used in seminars, there is a clear winner. But it’s unclear who finishes second, third and fourth. After reviewing the tape for half an hour, officials ruled Hightower the odd woman out. “When they finally announced it, I ran,” Hightower recalled. “I took off out of the stadium, and ran for like 40 minutes. I just ran until I couldn’t run anymore.” It was even more devastating

than the boycott, she said. She was numb for a week. As the Olympic team alternate, she still had to train as if she would compete. She had to be fitted for a uniform. And she had to show up. But upon realizing everyone was healthy enough to race, she left. She couldn’t even bring herself to watching the race on TV. Now, with the wisdom that comes with age, she is friends with the runner who won, though her competitive side most certainly lingers. “We joke about it all the time,” she said. “I tell her kids—your mom has my medal!”

ightower, who lives on the East Side, was sitting among friends at a dinner party when she declared there was no way she was sending her preschool son, Cameron Baker, to Columbus Public Schools. By that point in time, after holding positions with the Columbus Urban League (director of development and communications) and the Ohio Department of Mental Health (director of communications), Hightower had graduated to a high position within the mayor’s office. She had heard harrowing stories about the schools. “Why don’t you run for the school board and fix it?” a fellow diner challenged. In the ensuing weeks, local business leaders urged her on. Hightower started researching the district, the board. She wondered whether she could make a difference. She visited a big-name consultant. “You can’t win,” he

told her. The proposition became a challenge. She ran, and she won. Hightower spent one year as vice president and five as president, working to reestablish the credibility of the board within the business community. They’d never pass a levy without business backing, she knew. So she regularly visited the most powerful leaders in the city and argued the district’s case. She plucked Cameron from his private preschool and sent him to a public elementary school, cringing when he arrived home with stories of kids stabbing each other with pencils or pushing him around. She paid tutors to supplement his education, fearful he wasn’t learning to the levels she desired. And she endured an onslaught of criticism. In one news-making incident, a teen threw a rock at Hightower’s car, and she promptly got out, chased him down, heatedly put her finger in his face and swore.

The boy’s family, and several community members, were furious. (She apologized.) In another, the district came under national fire after Mifflin High School administrators failed to report a sexual assault to police. And the bulk of her criticism came from fiery fellow board member Bill Moss, who served on the board for almost three decades. Moss, now deceased, called Hightower a “child” and put her on the hot seat when a reporter discovered she had moved Cameron from their struggling neighborhood elementary school to an alternative one without the proper paperwork. Many people were put off by a personality they considered abrasive. “I do have an edge,” Hight-
ower said. “I always want 110 percent, because I expect that from myself. I always want it done yesterday.” Through it all, though, Hightower put her athletic training to use. Stay focused, she told herself. “As long as I can go to sleep at night, then I’m okay with the criticism,” she used to say. “And I’m sleeping real good.” Griffith, who hired Hightower to work for him at CCAD at the beginning of her school board tenure, admired the way Hightower weathered the negativity. “There was so much conflict, and it was such a messy time,” Griffith said. “Some of us would kind of get down in the dumps when the going gets tough, (but) she’s got a core of steel. She’s a very
strong person and very resilient. And she’s able to handle a lot of different things simultaneously, I think, with great energy and vigor, and she’s really impressive that way.” Her accomplishments were impressive, too. Under Hightower’s direction, the district passed a $392 million bond to improve buildings, passed a levy providing more than $62 million a year and improved the district’s credit rating, pulling it out of academic emergency. “Stephanie is not necessarily the most diplomatic person in the world,” former board president David Dobos once told The Columbus Dispatch. “She doesn’t sweat the details. But the major issues that have to get done, she will make sure that they get done.” Still, Hightower knew the district would take years— decades, probably—to fix. As Cameron prepared to enter high school, Hightower refused to send him to their neighborhood school. She entered a lottery to get him into two other public schools, but was unsuccessful. So she enrolled him in the private Columbus Academy and resigned from the board. “I knew,” she said, “it was time for me to move on.”

hen Marcy Hinzmann-Harris glides across the ice in an empty practice rink, her moves are so smooth and effortless that the performance seems worthy of an audience. Every spin, every jump, every landing looks polished to perfection. Rare missteps are quickly followed by graceful recoveries. Having spent her competitive figure skating career under the critical eyes of judges, the 28-year-old now enjoys the freedom of lacing her skates without anyone keeping score. A newfound love for the sport shines during practices with her husband and professional skating partner Lee Harris, who also never tires of hours spent on the ice. “It’s that place,” Marcy said, “where you really don’t think about what else is going on in your life.” The pressure that accompanied her many accolades, including the title U.S. Olympian, has lessened since returning from the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, Italy. After the Olympics, the Worthington-bred skater retired from international competitions to pursue a professional skating career. She and her husband spent the past few years performing in shows aboard cruise ships and recently returned to Central Ohio. Competing in the Olympics at age 23 was a longtime dream and hard-earned accomplishment for Marcy—a milestone that she will always look back on with pride. “Every skater dreams of having a photograph of them skating their performance on the ice with the Olympic rings,” she said. “I remember thinking, ‘I can’t believe there’s going to be that photo of me somewhere, someday.’ ” And yet, she’s careful not to let such a remarkable achievement define her. “She never turned into a diva,” said her grandfather, Les Hinzmann, who encouraged Marcy’s passion for skating as a little girl. “She never got impressed with herself. A lot of skaters do, and they get a little overbearing. She was humble almost to a fault.” May/June 2011 Capital-Style.com

The couple will dedicate their performance to Lee’s mother, Sally Harris, who is currently battling a recurrence of breast cancer, and to Marcy’s aunt, Nelly Brooks, a breast cancer survivor. “With skating being our platform, it’s great for us to go out there and skate for another reason except for ourselves,” Lee said. Skate for Hope—now in its eighth year—will take place June 18 at Nationwide Arena. “The show is like Stars on Ice and a dance recital,” said show founder Carolyn Bongirno. She has recruited skating celebrities like U.S. Olympians Johnny Weir, Rachael Flatt and Emily Hughes to perform this year. The show’s other stars are young figure skaters who have individually raised $500 for breast cancer research. Bongirno, an adult figure skater, created the event after overcoming a Stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis. She felt compelled to develop a charity that would help survivors—and their families—cope with the disease. She also wanted to teach children the importance of giving back. Since 2004, when the event debuted in Columbus, Skate for Hope has raised more than $300,000, with proceeds donated to the Stefanie Spielman Fund at the Ohio State University James Cancer Center and Solove Research Institute and the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer. Tickets cost $15 to $55. For more information, visit SkateForHope.org.

arcy’s introduction to the world of figure skating began in her parents’ living room, where she remembers watching Olympic bronze medalist Debi Thomas perform on TV. The energetic 8-year-old mimicked the star’s choreography, twirling and leaping across the carpet. Her parents, Isabel and Terry Hinzmann, recognized Marcy’s athleticism and enrolled their daughter in group lessons at the Ohio State University Ice Rink. “We wanted her to take up some kind of sport—soccer, ballet, gymnastics or figure skating,” Isabel Hinzmann said. “It was something for her to do … just an activity aside from Brownies at school. Never did I dream that she’d end up on the U.S. Olympic team.” The first skating lesson didn’t go quite as Marcy had imagined. The petite novice wobbled atop the slick ice and wiped out a few times, ending practice in tears. “We had to kind of coax her to go back the next time,” her mother recalled. By the second
and third lessons, though, she took off smoothly on her skates and excelled so quickly that the group instructor soon told her parents that Marcy would benefit from a private coach. The Hinzmanns knew their daughter was talented, but they couldn’t help but question whether such early praise was sincere: Did Marcy truly have a gift? epeated success at local and regional competitions answered that question. With her balletic body, Marcy “looked like a perfect little skater,” said Mary Hiser, a national U.S. Figure Skating judge and member of the Columbus Figure Skating Club. “From the get-go, she was very artistic. There were national judges at the time who said, ‘This girl’s going to be very good.’ ” At 12, Marcy qualified for her first national championship as a juvenile-level skater. “We could just see a progression,” Isabel Hinzmann said. “Every year, we could see that she was taking steps

She’s not one to seek attention like that.” Isabel Hinzmann Marcy’s mother in the right direction as far as learning more and achieving goals that she would set for herself.” Marcy showed motivation, determination and selfdiscipline early on that set her apart from other young competitors. “For her, it was the whole process,” Hiser said. “It wasn’t just about going to nationals, or making a team, or winning a competition. She liked going to the rink every day. I never saw her parents tell her to get back on the ice. If anything, they had to pull her off.” Such intense dedication required sacrifices along the way for Marcy, her parents and younger siblings Tyler and Tiffany.
“We tried to keep normal family life, although with a skater in the family that’s hard sometimes, because there’s a lot of traveling and a lot of focus on that one child,” Isabel Hinzmann said. “It was a fine balance, making sure everyone’s needs were met. At times, it was all-consuming.” Marcy’s mother homeschooled her from eighthgrade on to adapt to her daughter’s full-time training schedule, which allowed little time for off-the-ice socializing. Marcy missed out on a typical teenage life filled with school dances, sports and sleepovers. “I was always just pretty much a skater and working on my school work and that took all my time,” Marcy said. “I started sacrificing a lot, but I wanted to. I didn’t think about it. It seemed very natural to me to want to go in that direction.”

She remembers feeling calm and worry-free as she stepped onto the ice, and her parents watched from the stands with a similar sense of relief. When the announcer read Marcy’s name, her mother felt overwhelmed with pride. She did it, Isabel Hinzmann thought. She’s here. This is what she wanted. “I was so proud of her,” she said, her voice filled with emotion at the memory. “I saw her work so hard toward this. We were just so happy to be there to share that moment.” Marcy skated two of her best personal performances

kating makes up a big part of Marcy’s postOlympic life. It’s a passion she shares with her husband, Lee, a Canadianborn hockey player who also competed as a pair skater. The couple met in 2003 at a competition in Helsinki, Finland, (“I thought he was cute and had a crush on him

right away,” Marcy said) and married three years later. Marcy and Lee recently returned home to Westerville after show-skating on Royal Caribbean cruise ships. As paid entertainers, the couple performed their pairs routine nightly while sailing to Europe, the Caribbean, the Mexican Riviera, New England and Canada. “There was a standing ovation every night,” Lee said.
“The first time we got a paycheck, we went back to our room and were almost dancing around. We were like, ‘We’re getting paid to do what we’ve done for 20 years!’ ” “It felt wrong to us,” Marcy said, laughing. “It was so cool.” The only downside of life aboard a cruiseship, she added, was living in a room “the size of a walk-in closet. But we were together.”
When their fifth cruise contract ended in October, Marcy and Lee flew home for a day before flying off to Germany for the rest of the year to perform in a Christmas show. They returned to Ohio in January, content to give up traveling the world at a whirlwind pace and finally settle down. Marcy, who moved away at 18, said she’s now rediscovering Columbus with Lee. The couple love exploring new restaurants with friends and are regulars in the stands at Blue Jackets games. “It’s the little things, believe it or not, that mean so much,” Marcy said. “It’s doing laundry in your own washer and dryer, sleeping in your own bed, cooking your own dinner. Those are the things we’re really enjoying.” Their days are now spent pursuing a new passion— coaching students of all ages at The Chiller Ice Rinks. The job isn’t glamorous, and demands odd hours seven days a week, but Lee and Marcy find the work fulfilling. “They’re a breath of fresh air,” said Denise Hughes, The Chiller’s figure skating director. “We’re happy that they’re here to stay.”

peace, love, bling LeAnne Absalom waved goodbye to Corporate America to start a jewelry business that is helping women at home and abroad

eridot, agate, fluorite. Two years ago, those words were not part of LeAnne Absalom’s vocabulary. You were much more likely to hear her speak of terahertz and network topology. But this former information technology expert is now the creative force behind Peace Love Bling, an import jewelry business with a social conscience. It’s mission? Empower women and emerging entrepreneurs. Absalom discovered the beautiful handcrafted designs she now imports on the streets of Beijing. “These women literally spread jewelry out on blankets and sell it on the streets and in subways,” she said. Now, thanks to Absalom, the jewelry is featured in 35 stores in five states and online. And the women in China who create each piece are able to support their families with dignity and stability. Absalom, 43, moved to Columbus from New York after her husband, Dave, took a job at Nationwide. She joined JPMorgan Chase & Co., but sensed that her entrepreneurial

spirit would ultimately prevail. “I knew that for the next 25 years, I wanted to do something that made me happy, (made me) a role model for my daughters, and created lifetime employment,” she said. So Peace Love Bling was born. The jewelry is crafted with real gemstones, from exotic pearls to brightly colored crystals, and priced from $10 to $350—less then what some stores charge for faux stones. Each female artist is given the workplace and tools to be successful, and they are paid well, Absalom said. On top of empowering women around the world, sales also help

women at home: A portion of each piece supports local women’s charities, including Dress for Success and a domestic violence task force. The response to the chunky, unique, one of a kind designs has been extremely positive, Absalom said. The chic Short North bridal shop Big Rock Little Rooster carries some of Peace Love Bling’s goods. “Our customers are drawn to unique. And they love the fact that each piece can be customized,” said manager Kristin Cooke. “But it’s not just the amazing designs that has them buying, they also love supporting the cause.”
Absalom hopes to expand into home trunk shows to give even more women an opportunity to succeed. Though she’s no longer traveling the world for corporate giants like WorldCom, Absalom—who works out of the third-floor loft in her Old Towne East home—couldn’t be happier. “When you step on a path and things start to fall into place,” she said, “it’s a signal that you’ve taken the right steps.” For more, visit Peace-Love-Bling. com. Buckeye Ranch has two fundraisers on the horizon
ranch hands Fifty years ago, a group of Central Ohio women pooled their money and energy to create a place for troubled boys. Now, their legacy thrives as The Buckeye Ranch celebrates its golden anniversary while scooping even more children (including girls) into its arms Story by: Melissa kossler dutton I Photo by: Will Shilling

he Buckeye Ranch stole Barbara Lach’s heart the first time she visited the Grove City facility that helps troubled youth. A young boy who was receiving services there escorted her around the property. Lach found the youngster to be “delightful” company. After the tour, Lach turned to the director. “What could that child possible have done to end up here?” she asked. His response convinced her she needed to volunteer for the non-profit agency. “It’s not what he’s done,” the director said. “It’s what’s been done to him.” “It took my heart,” Lach
recalled. After that meeting, she joined a long line of Central Ohio women dedicated to helping the Buckeye Ranch deliver a broad spectrum of services to children with emotional, behavioral or mental issues. The 73-year-old currently serves as chairwoman of the Ranch’s company board of directors. Buckeye Ranch, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, was started by a group of volunteers known as the Women’s Juvenile Service Board. In the late 1950s, at the urging of a local judge, the women began raising money to build a residential home for disadvantaged boys, said Carol Head, one of the original volunteers. The women made buckeye
corsages to sell at Ohio State Football games, hosted charity balls and sold Christmas cards to earn the money to build Buckeye Ranch, the 87-yearold said. She recalled selling corsages with Woody Hayes’ wife, Anne, while riding a train headed to Michigan for a football game. “It was a very active group,” said Head, who lives in Westerville. “We were inspired.” When the facility opened in 1961, it housed 10 boys. Today, the organization serves 1,650 children—boys and girls—every day, on and off campus. It helps in a variety of ways. The 145-acre Grove City campus still offers residential services for as many as 88 children aged 10 to 18. The ranch
The Buckeye Ranch is partnering with Dine Originals Columbus to present the Taste of Dine Originals, a fundraiser to support programs and services. The May 12 event at the Grange Insurance Audubon Center, 505 W. Whittier St., starts at 6 p.m. and will feature food from more than 50 locally owned and operated restaurants. Tickets cost $100 and are available at BuckeyeRanch.org. The Buckeye Ranch Bash, a fundraiser geared to local corporations, is scheduled for June 25 at Columbus Crew Stadium. Attendees will enjoy a party, silent auction and Kenny Chesney concert.
also has a foster care program for children who are ready to leave residential treatment but are not able to be reunited with their families. Foster care also is available to children who do not require residential care but cannot live at home. The ranch provides specialized care to kids who are deaf or hearing impaired and who have emotional or behavioral problems. In recent years, the organization has begun to serve children in the communities where they live. Some clients attend an off-campus daytreatment program, where they receive specialized education and mental health services. Others receive counseling at their home, school or other familiar place. eric cooke
Attending classes at a Buckeye Ranch daytreatment program gave Eric Cooke the desire to succeed. Before joining the program, Cooke had little interest in school, his future or social interactions. He was getting into trouble at school and had issues with anxiety. “It made me feel like I could do something with my life,” he said. “Graduating wasn’t even on my agenda (before that).” The teachers took a personal interest in his success, said Cooke, now 20. They also encouraged him to pursue art. The talented painter often relied on art to express himself. Cooke spent three years in the program, returned to public school and graduated. “(The program) showed me what I needed to do,” he said. “Without it, I think I would have stayed at home and done nothing with my life.” Today he has a job and an apartment. He intends to return to school and study interior design.

For the first time “in forever,” Tiffany (who asked that her last name not be used to protect her identity) is on the honor roll. The student at the Buckeye Ranch’s residential program in Grove City said she has a renewed interest in school. “I have the motivation to succeed,” she said. “I want to move on with my life.” The 16-year-old, who has struggled with depression, moved to the ranch in December. “I was self harming,” she said. “I didn’t feel worthy of myself.” She said the small classes, therapy sessions and the structure at the ranch are helping her get well. “I feel better about myself,” Tiffany said. “I’m more confident in myself.”

Dan Whittier
Dan Whittier credits the Buckeye Ranch for the successes in his life. The staff taught him valuable lessons that put him on the right path, said the retired Columbus police officer. “That’s where I learned a lot about responsibility— meeting somebody else’s expectations,” said Whittier, who was sent to the Grove City facility because his parents couldn’t care for him. He lived in a cottage with other boys for about three years. The youngsters were cared for by “Mom” and “Pop,” ranch employees who treated them as their own. Whittier, now 57, said he thrived there because the house parents created a loving environment. “I felt good there,” the Blacklick resident said. One of his best memories was when “Pop” allowed him to use the ranch’s tractor to cut the grass. Whittier has never forgotten the show of trust. “It meant a lot,” he said. “I recognized it as something I wanted to take through life. I wanted people to trust and respect me.”
Ranch has done an excellent job of changing its programming to meet the needs of children, said Eric Fenner, executive director of Franklin County Children Services. When children services asked for non-residential services, the ranch responded by finding ways to offer its quality programs throughout the county, he said. “I want to really thank them for their willingness to be as flexible as they are,” he said. “You want your strong partners to be adaptable to the changes you’re going through.” The size and scope of the ranch’s present-day offerings amazes Head, who still serves on one of the agency’s sustaining boards. Although the ranch has grown extensively during the last five decades, it still relies on the generosity of the many women who volunteer for the organization’s service board and its affiliates, said Nick Rees, president and CEO of the ranch. The women, who range in age from 30 to 87, recently raised more than $285,000 for a capital campaign. The money will help fund improvements to the Grove City campus, technology upgrades for staff and the purchase and renovation of a building on West Broad Street that will house a family center. The women also volunteer at events, provide toiletries and school supplies to students, and donate money for Christmas gifts for kids at the ranch. “They have given of their time, talent and treasure for over 50 years, and that devotion has impacted the lives of thousands of children and families throughout Central Ohio,” Rees said. “Their foresight, leadership and commitment is the foundation on which the Buckeye Ranch was built.”

Festival Fever When the note arrived, Courtney Yoakum screamed. “I was so thrilled,” she said. “It was such a huge compliment.” Yoakum, a Columbus jewelry maker, was accepted into the prestigious Columbus Arts Festival as part of its new emerging artist program. The festival—which is celebrating its 50th year—is June 3, 4 and 5 in the Discovery District. For the first time, it will include 10 “emerging artists” from Central Ohio who will peddle their goods among the well-established set. Yoakum, a graduate of the Columbus College of Art & Design, is excited to be among them. By day, the 36-year-old is director of Grandview’s Open Door Art Studio, which teaches art to adults with developmental disabilities. By night, she creates this beautiful, handpainted ceramic jewelry ($15 to $45) in her home studio (sometimes alongside her 9-year-old son, Owen). This program, she said, helps take the intimidation factor out of the festival. “I just feel,” she said, “like it’s going to open up a real opportunity.” For details, visit ColumbusArtsFestival.org.

s I walked into Mukha, owner Tim Maurer greeted me with a question: “Are you ready for a religious experience?” Was I ever. I was stressed that day. (And week. And month. And year.) The Mukha Mystic Nirvana is a total-body experience that’s sort of a combination of a facial and a massage, peaking with a stream of warm oil being dripped on the third eye (center of the forehead). As religious experiences go, this one was of the Eastern variety. Maurer employs ancient-Indian Ayurvedic techniques to balance out the different energies, or doshas, in the body. It relaxes you while also upping circulation and flushing out toxins. The premise is that therapists use different techniques depending on the client’s body type. That means you’re getting an experience specially tailored for you, which is pretty neat. Because the 90-minute Mystic Nirvana is all about the sensory experience, the lights were kept low, music played softly, and Maurer spoke softly. My arms, hands, legs, feet, shoulders and scalp all got treated to a body scrub and vigorous massage. Everything was wrapped in warm towels to help seal in moisture. Back to that oil. Called Shirodhara, the Indian practice uses a continuous stream of warm oil to wash away stress, fatigue and anxiety. I’d already been lulled into a state of tranquility by the time Maurer unleashed the oil, and that little rivulet literally washed away any remaining nagging thoughts. Mission accomplished. Tip: This isn’t a squeeze-it-in-onyour-lunch-break kind of treatment. You’ll want to schedule it at the end of the day. The description warned that my hair would be “saturated with soothing oils,” and it was helpful and true. Maurer left an extra towel to help squeeze out extra oil, but I still looked like I’d just stepped out of the shower when I left. You know what? I didn’t mind at all. All the stress that I’d walked in with had melted away—for the weekend, at least. –Shelley Mann

efore scheduling my appointment for ear candling at the Skin Perfect Clinic, I was only vaguely familiar with the treatment, which dates back to Biblical times. I knew it had something to do with cleaning your ears but was unaware that some consider it a preventative measure to help with sinus blockage. That was welcome news to me, since I suffer from seasonal allergies and have had my share of sinus infections. When I arrived at the clinic, I was taken to a softly lit, inviting room, where I climbed onto a table fully clothed and stretched out on my side. The clinician explained that she would place a hollow candle— actually rolled muslin dipped in paraffin wax—in the outer opening of my ear and hold it at an angle consistent with the angle of the ear canal. Lighting the candle, she said, would create a vacuum in the ear and pull out excess wax, fungus and bacteria into the hollow core. (The procedure does not remove all of the wax because some of the substance is needed to keep dirt and bugs out of the ear.) I didn’t feel much during the 30-minute procedure but did hear the candle snapping and hissing. Afterward, we opened the candle to see what had been pulled from my ears. It wasn’t as dramatic as I had expected; there was just a small amount of dark wax. The clinic staff considers the procedure a form of body detoxification, so they recommend drinking lots of water afterward and avoiding alcohol for the day. It’s also important, they noted, to wash your ear the next time you shower to remove any wax or particles that were pulled to the top of ear canal. The day after the treatment, my left ear ached a little, and my sinuses felt tender. Time will tell whether the cleaning paved the way for a season with fewer sinus issues. I’m hopeful. –Melissa Kossler Dutton

oma is the Vedic god of bliss. And blissful this is. My treatment started with the same thing everything at Woodhouse does—with a plush robe and complimentary glass of wine. (Heck, give me both of those and I’m already in a stellar mood. The rest is practically icing!) The Soma, a 50-minute treatment, combines two arts—shirodhara and reflexology—and is indulgent for men and women alike. My treatment began with

me crawling between the blankets onto a comfortably heated massage bed, laying on my back, and placing a silky eye mask over my eyes. The Shirodhara portion of the treatment—an Ayurvedic technique used to release mental tension and restore balance—came first. To start, the therapist placed a hanging, lantern-like funnel above my forehead, and then poured in warm oils that streamed slowly and steadily onto my forehead. The sensation initially gave my whole body the chills. It almost tickled. I wasn’t sure I
liked it. But about five minutes in, it was strangely addictive— and amazing. After 10 or 15 minutes, the stream stopped, and the therapist massaged the oils into my head and neck. When that massage concluded, the therapist moved to my feet for the second half of the treatment—the reflexology. It’s an ancient massage technique that uses reflex areas of the feet to help soothe corresponding organs, from the stomach to the kidneys. As the therapist massaged her way around my feet, she found a few knots and hoped she
was helping the corresponding organs. (She has one friend, she told me, who swears reflexology is the only thing that soothes her kidney stones.) To be honest, after 20 or 30 minutes, I’m not sure whether my organs felt any different (I hadn’t had any complaints anyway). But I do know my feet felt phenomenal. My whole body was kind of melted to the bed by the treatment’s end. I was so relaxed I had to consciously keep myself awake at points. Utterly dreamy. -Kristy Eckert

Decorator’s Dream When offered the opportunity to put his talents to work for the Columbus Museum of Art, John Wilson eagerly agreed. He and 17 other interior designers have spent months creating beautiful spaces in an Upper Arlington home for the Decorators’ Show House, a biannual fundraiser that benefits the museum. The event has raised more than $3 million for the museum since starting 37 years ago. The public can tour the house, located at 4125 Oxford Dr., from April 30 to May 22. Wilson, of CRI Interiors in the Short North, created the entryway design seen here. He said supporting the museum helps make Columbus a better place to live. “It’s important for a city to have a thriving arts scene,” he said. “It’s our responsibility to secure it for future generations.” Tickets cost $15 in advance or $20 at the door. T
he three-story rental home in German Village looked charming from the outside, but the interior was shabby after decades of wear by rotating tenants. Timeworn floors, popcorn ceilings, mismatched wallpaper and water damage might have scared off other prospective buyers. But those problems were part of what attracted Marie Logothetis and her husband, Dan Kline. The couple was searching for their next renovation project, and this home, built more than a century ago, fit their vision. “I wanted to create something more modern,” said Marie, who searched several months for the perfect property. “The house really fit the bill: Structurally sound, in need of a facelift, but not at the cost of destroying a historical legacy.”

Capital-Style.com May/June 2011
She had enjoyed the process of renovating the couple’s nearby former condo, and that smaller-scale rehab gave her the confidence needed to tackle an aging, 3,300-square-foot space. She worked closely with Fry Contracting to draw an architectural plan that combined two adjoining rental units into a single-family home. The yearlong construction project required tearing apart much of the existing interior and replacing all of the plumbing, electrical wiring, heating and air conditioning. “The size of the project was a little daunting,” Dan said. “You hear all these horror stories about big, massive renovations that go on for years and years. So that was the only thing that gave me a little pause. I think Marie really thought this out and knew exactly what she wanted to do.” Since moving into the transformed home last year, Marie,

The dining room might seem like an unlikely place to display a collection of roe deer skulls. When Marie first told Dan about the idea, he was skeptical. “She does this thing where she’ll pick a piece in isolation and say, ‘What do you think of this?’ and I can’t see it. But then... it all sort of works.” The skulls came from Germany and were purchased on eBay from a man who didn’t speak English. “Luckily,” Marie noted, “Dan knows German!” The cowhide rug was another eBay find. Marie purchased the trio of glass wine spheres at Found in Powell. “I’ve got a thing for lighting, as you’ll see throughout the house,” she said. Hanging those particular lights from the ceiling was a chore for the electricians, though. “They are very heavy,” Marie said. “Every time I’d go, ‘Oh, look what I got! Can you install this?’ they were not happy with me.”
German Village Haus und Garten Tour Marie and Dan’s home will be featured on the 52nd Annual German Village Haus und Garten Tour, sponsored by the German Village Society. The event takes place June 26 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and showcases eight homes and three gardens. Tickets cost $15 in advance and $20 at the door. For more information, visit GermanVillage.com.

Décor who works as a geophysicist, and Dan, a literature and writing professor, have thoughtfully personalized each room with furniture and accessories that balance the home’s airy design. They’ve created a sophisticated-yet-natural atmosphere by blending contemporary and rustic materials. The overall feeling is, in Marie’s words, “a little bit farmhouse, a little bit industrial.” One of the home’s most striking features is an industrial work of art—a towering, custom-built staircase engineered with steel, wood and glass. A recurring farmhouse theme is apparent, too, in the sliding barn-style doors that flank the TV room, the accents of cow and goat hide and the mounted roe deer skulls that hang above the dining room table. “I don’t want to be defined by one style,” Marie said, “so I try whatever looks nice and I think might fit in.” She loves scouring decor magazines, eBay and showrooms from New York to Chicago for inspiration. She turned to designer Monique Keegan, owner of Enjoy Co. in Granville, to fine-tune her vision. Keegan describes Marie’s style as modern with a feminine edge. It’s clean and contemporary, yet also comfortable. “She has an amazing design aesthetic,” added Jason Mangum, who owns Twig Garden & Home in German Village, one of Marie’s favorite local shops. “It’s the perfect example of either you have it, or you don’t. It’s not something that can be taught.”

Grand Entrance
A sculptural staircase and lofty foyer bathed in natural light greet visitors to the home. During the extensive renovation, Marie and Dan decided to remove part of the second and third floors to “enhance the airiness” in the entry. They worked with architects Rider Brice and Nelson Behr to design a staircase that spans three flights. The frame is made of steel, and the pattern on the railing was inspired by a neighbor’s iron gate. The structure, built by Ironfab LLC, also includes wood: the treads are made of white oak stained ebony to match the wood flooring throughout the home. And it features a 15-foot glass catwalk. After the glass was installed, it took Marie about two weeks to be convinced she could safely walk on it. “I was almost in tears over it, I was that scared,” she said. “I called the contractor and said, ‘I don’t know if I made the right decision.’ He said, ‘What? After all this?’ (laughs).” But then she saw her Welsh Terrier, Monty, zoom across, oblivious it was glass. “And I thought, ‘If he can handle it, a grown woman can handle it.’ ” May/June 2011 Capital-Style.com

Cook’s Kitchen
Marie was born in Athens, Greece, and inherited her mother’s love for cooking. She cooks at home at least five nights a week and enjoys entertaining, so she wanted a kitchen that was both functional and beautiful. The centerpiece of the room is an Italian-marble topped island that doubles as a food prep area and buffet space during parties. The wooden chandeliers hanging above the island are from Oly Studio in California. The most-used appliance? The built-in coffee maker. “We use that thing religiously,” Marie said. Another favorite feature is the storage provided by wall-to-ceiling cabinets made by Arclinea and a rolling library ladder that allows easy access to the highest row of cupboards. On the opposite wall are two vintage chalkboards salvaged from an Ohio schoolhouse and purchased at Enjoy Co. in Granville. Dan, a Victorian poetry buff, helped to choose the chalk-stenciled quotes by Oscar Wilde and Robert Browning. 122

Air of Sophistication
The formal living room isn’t a space that Marie and Dan use much on their own, but guests tend to gravitate here during parties. An oversized painting of a horse serves as the focal point among several eye-catching pieces, including a mirrored console, a pair of Darryl Carter sofas and a set of faux-crocodile nesting tables. The furniture, with its sleek and simple lines, complements a neutral palette of cream, taupe, gray and black. “I didn’t want it to be cluttered,” Marie said.

Mix and Match
Marie’s Internet searches for the perfect furniture, lighting and accessories have led her to order pieces from around the globe. But there are several shops close to home that help inspire her design ideas, and the family room displays a mix of items bought locally. The images of 1920s boxers hanging above the linen sectional are from Collier West in the Short North; the weathered zinc table and wooden light fixture are from Enjoy Co. in Granville; and the console beneath the TV is from Twig Garden & Home in German Village. “They just keep bringing in new things, and I’m getting to the place where I don’t need anything else. But…you’re always going to replace things.” 126

Sweet dreams
The second-floor master bedroom is one of few rooms that maintains the historic home’s original footprint. Plenty of modern touches were added, though, including a pair of French doors that overlook a neighbor’s rooftop. The couple and their dog, Monty, enjoy the natural light and gentle breezes, especially in the morning. One of Marie’s favorite light fixtures, a giant wooden chandelier that she found at Twig Garden & Home, hangs prominently above the bed. The fixture wasn’t for sale when she first spotted it. “I was reluctant to sell it to her,” said Jason Mangum, who owns Twig. “She convinced me that she wanted it, and I looked at the space and said, ‘You can have it.’ ” Two giant mirrors made from reclaimed wood and purchased at Enjoy Co. add to the organic look—and create the illusion of more space. 128

Blissful Bath
An antique-looking vanity, a tub and a huge shower were all on Marie’s wish-list for a modernized master bathroom. One of the first pieces she purchased during the renovation was a vintageinspired bathtub from Restoration Hardware. The cast iron tub was so heavy that it took four men to lift it and had to be hoisted upstairs using a crane. Despite all the effort, “I haven’t even used it yet!” Marie said. Overnight guests have indulged in a bubble bath, but she prefers the shower instead. A curvaceous Murano glass chandelier and marble-topped double vanity add a touch of glamour.

The vibe in the guest room and adjoining bath is soothing and relaxing. Marie combined earthy elements—neutral bedding, teak wood furniture, a cowhide rug—with a touch of glamour in the chandelier.
Curb Appeal
The renovation modernized the interior of the circa-1890s German Village home without altering its curbside charm. “We really wanted to make sure that we respected the outside of the house and kept it looking as historic as we could,” Dan said. Some historical elements that were thought to be lost were uncovered during the project, such as the aging front doors that had been hidden away in a basement crawl space. The doors have since been restored and reinstalled. “I was very happy about that, to find something original,” Marie said. 000

A two-story renovation gives a Bexley couple and their children room to grow Story by: dana wilson Photos by: Will Shilling
M
ary and Mike Roddy hadn’t planned on moving. In fact, they loved their former 1936 Tudor in Bexley. But as their four children grew and their home became a popular gathering place for friends, they realized they needed more space for everyday living. The Roddys kept their search close to home: They didn’t want to give up Bexley’s central location, good schools or tree-lined streets. They were looking for something with character. The 1950 colonial they chose “didn’t have much,” especially from the curb, Mary Roddy said. “It looked like a long Saltine box.” But she and her husband imagined its potential. Since moving in nearly two years ago, the Roddys have worked to transform the home both inside and out. They warmed up the plain exterior with taupe paint, accented the windows with shutters and trim, replaced the roof, added a front porch and built a fence. Even more drastic are the changes they’ve made inside. The back wing of the house has been renovated from a gallery space (the previous owner was an artist who exhibited her contemporary oil paintings there) into a lofted kitchen and family room. The new space is chic, comfortable, and, most importantly, family-friendly. The Roddys now have plenty of room to welcome friends. Weeks after wrapping up the renovation project, they hosted big crowds for football games, holidays and birthdays. “Why have a space like this,” Mary Roddy said, “if you’re not going to use it?” May/June 2011 Capital-Style.com

The Kitchen
“To me, it was to be timeless” Mary Roddy, Homeowner 140
Capital-Style.com May/June 2011
Mary’s original vision for this space was a two-story library filled with books. But her mother suggested instead converting it into a kitchen to replace the small, outdated one that adjoined the dining room. Mary liked that idea and worked with Pete Foster of Pete Foster Residential Design to further develop it. The design they chose shifted the existing stairway away from the center of the room and moved the second-story walkway to the opposite wall, creating a wide-open space. The decor mixes industrial elements (concrete countertops and stainless-steel appliances) with vintage touches (a repurposed metal industrial cart and baseball stadium lights, both from locally owned American Furnishings). In choosing the finishes, Mary said she was attracted to classic, durable materials. “To me, it was to be timeless.” The floor is crafted from handscraped hickory, and cleaning it is low maintenance. And any scratches or stains on the marble-topped center island don’t keep Mary up at night. “I kind of like the worn look anyway,” she said.

The Dining Room
Entertaining in the Roddy house usually involves large crowds, so the dining room needed to look elegant but not stuffy. Mary describes it as “semi-formal.” Most of the furnishings in the room are from Restoration Hardware, including the massive table made of reclaimed wood, the linen chairs, the buffet, the rug and even the chandeliers. The collection of framed prints decorating the wall behind the table are pages from an antique bird book that Mary purchased at an antique shop.
“We didn’t even consider moving out of Bexley. It just seemed very homey, very cozy. It’s a great community.” Mary Roddy, Homeowner 142

The Loft
The Roddys spend much of their family time at home relaxing on comfy furniture beneath the cedar-wrapped beams. “Someone said, ‘It’s like being in a tree house,’ ” Mary said. “It’s really private up here.” A pair of contemporary slipcovered sofas and chairs are positioned among several antiques, including a wooden dry sink and metal industrial cart that doubles as a TV stand. “I think that antiques can be used anywhere in your decorating,” Mary said. She accessorized with silver lamps and metal items that reflect natural light from the room’s many windows. The black-and-white portrait of the family’s English bulldog, Spurgeon, hanging in the back of the room was Mary’s Christmas gift to her husband. 144

K
evin Zeppernick spent years imagining and designing his dream home before making it a reality. “I walked through this house a million times in my head,” he said. The commercial builder, who indulges his creative side by occasionally building houses, had clear ideas of what he wanted for the New Albany home he shares with his wife, Kenna, and daughter Kennison, 4. The combination of Kevin’s building knowledge and Kenna’s creativity resulted in a warm and welcoming home that’s energy-efficient and soundly built. “It was a nice dance,” Kenna said. “It was fun to see it become a reality.” The house accomplishes their goal of having space to host friends and family for sports events and holidays. The main floor of the home includes a pub area designed for everyone’s
optimal enjoyment (including the hosts). Working with his wife was different than building for a client, said Kevin, who owns Zeppernick Custom Homes. “As a builder, I usually present the options, and then I can stand back and the couple can have it out,” he said. “Here, I was right in the middle of the storm.” The couple worked on a tight deadline to get the house built and decorated in time for the 2010 BIA Parade of Homes. Conforming to New Albany’s strict building codes was a challenge but, in the end, made the home more interesting, Kevin said. Adhering to the rules about knee walls and roof lines allowed him to create some great storage options in the playroom and laundry room. It also led to a cozy nook in the master suite where the family has milk and coffee in the mornings. “They definitely,” he said, “made the house better.”
The Lodge
A sports-loving family builds a home perfect for friends and family to gather and cheer Story by: Melissa kossler dutton Photos by: Will Shilling
Kevin and Kenna—who lived in Austin, Texas, before moving to Central Ohio—love southwestern style. So they designed their great room to feel like a lodge. They also enjoy entertaining, especially for sporting events. Kevin is a sports fanatic who played football at Princeton University; Kenna, also an avid sports fan, was a cheerleader at Princeton. It is not shown here, but the room includes a 20-foot stacked-stone fireplace with a TV mounted to it. Some people who toured the home during the 2010 parade questioned that decision. But, Kevin said, “That’s how we live. It is the focal point of how we entertain.” May/June 2011 Capital-Style.com

The Pub
“We were kind of surprised in the end of how often we feel like we’re on vacation.” Kenna Zeppernick, Homeowner 150
Capital-Style.com May/June 2011
The couple, who routinely invite friends over to watch football and basketball games, knew they wanted their entertaining space on one floor. At their old house, people would gather in the basement or kitchen. And Kenna, who loves sports, was often in the kitchen and away from the action. Now, friends gather in the pub, a room with an 11-foot bar and game table off the great room. “It’s been fun,” Kenna said. “People don’t gather in the kitchen during the parties. People are able to socialize elsewhere.” The pub, lodge and kitchen feature stacked-stone archways that define the spaces but make them feel connected. An Amish craftsman designed the bar top, which is a series of shadow boxes where the couple can display sports memorabilia and more. (While sitting at the bar, guests look down into the boxes.) Behind the bar are two refrigerators for beer and two for wine.

The Master Suite
Kevin designed the master bedroom around the couple’s hand-carved bedroom set. The ornate, heavy furniture was built by a craftsman in Texas. “It’s very moody,” Kenna said. “I was an English lit major. This is me.” In the bathroom, instead of having a wall behind the double vanity, there is a large window that looks onto a small balcony. Twin mirrors hang from the window panes above the sinks. “There’s so much math in this room,” Kevin said. “There was no margin for error.” The suite also features a small sitting area with a refrigerator and double-sided fireplace. Another cool space? A nook where they read to their daughter.
BIA Parade of Homes As families like the Zeppernicks settle into their 2010 BIA Parade of Homes houses, the homes being showcased this year are ready for an audience. The 2011 BIA Parade of Homes will take place in the Olentangy Falls development located in southern Delaware County. The development is noted for its large lots and views of the Olentangy River Valley. The tour runs June 11 to June 26. Homes are open Mondays through Saturdays noon to 9 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 6 p.m. Tickets cost $12 and parking costs $2. For more, visit BIAParade.com.

A toast to summer Kick off summertime in style with this casually elegant dinner party Story by: faith durand I Photos by: Will Shilling

unshine is as good an excuse as any to throw a party, and a casual dinner— whether indoors or out—is an ideal way to enjoy friends. Casual, however, doesn’t mean plastic tablecloths and disposable flatware. Here, we throw a party inspired by rustic French style, with a burlap runner, crisp white dishware, glass tumblers, white napkins, clever place cards, luscious flowers in luxe containers and inviting candlelight. Powell decorated the table. (The key? Different heights and textures, they say.) They used Astier de Villatte dishware from their neighbor shop, Found, to anchor their floral creations. In the tallest vases, they arranged an array of colorful flowers and herbs. In another vase, they used a bouquet of tulips. In mediumsized vases, they showcased herbs as the main event, using rosemary, scented geranium, sage and leaves. In the egg holders, they placed individual roses and artichokes. They filled different sizes of clear vases with water, and then lit candles inside them. And they placed a handful of
homemade moss balls around the table as well. Finally, they rolled the napkins. They placed a lamb’s ear leaf, sage and a fresh flower on top. And they tied them—and really, the whole table—together with handlabeled shipping tags. The beautiful décor, of course, is a precursor to an equally fabulous meal. Here, we feed our guests
with skewers of melon and prosciutto, crusted grilled steak (simple yet always a treat!), tangy potato salad with yogurt and herbs, and lovelyyet-easy strawberry tartlets. It’s all meant to be enjoyed with a jug of fruity sparkling sangria that boasts juicy citrus flavors and sweet red wine. If you’re the sort of hostess who wants to enjoy her own party, then this menu is for you. The tartlets, salad and sangria are prepped ahead of time, and the steak and melon-prosciutto skewers need only a few short minutes on the grill. Your guests will be delighted with the delicious flavors, and you’ll be able to relax and raise a glass to summer. Bon appétit! Faith Durand is a food writer and editor living in Clintonville. Ingredients u 2 bottles
inexpensive Merlot wine u 1 cup sweet port wine u 1/2 cup orange liqueur, such as Cointreau or Triple Sec u 2 navel oranges u 1 lemon u 16 ounces strawberries, u 24 to 36 ounces tonic water, well chilled u Mint to garnish
Directions Sangria should be prepared at least 12 hours before serving, so that the fruit juices can infuse the wine with their flavor. At least one day before serving, mix the wine, port wine, and orange liqueur in a large pitcher or container. Cut the oranges and lemons in half lengthwise, and then into half-moons. Stir into the wine mixture. Hull the strawberries and cut them in half, then mix them into the wine as well. Using the back of a long spoon, muddle the strawberries into the bottom of the jug, smashing them and releasing their juices. Cover the jug and chill overnight, or up to 3 days. Just before serving, stir in the tonic water, adjusting to taste. Serve in tumblers or wine glasses with a sprig of mint to garnish. Makes 24, 8-oz. servings.
Sparkling Summer Sangria Sangria is a delicious party punch—ripe red wine with summer fruit and sparkling fizz—that’s easy to make and easy to serve. This version is sweetened with strawberries, and only lightly spiked with orange liqueur. Serve well-chilled with small bowls of salty almonds.

Channel your inner Italian with this sweet and salty appetizer. Ingredients u 1 medium
cantaloupe prosciutto, about 4 ounces u Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper u 8 ounces smoked paprika & garlic almonds, to serve u 8 slices
Directions Place 16 bamboo skewers in a pan of water. Soak them for at least 1 hour. Cut the melon in half and scoop out the strings and seeds in the middle. Discard. Use a melon baller or a teaspoon to scoop out round balls of melon. Skewer one melon ball about halfway down a soaked skewer. Tear a piece of prosciutto in half and twist it, then roll it into a rosette. Skewer this rosette above the melon ball. Add another melon ball, then the second half of the prosciutto slice. Add a final melon ball. Repeat until you have 16 skewers. Sprinkle the skewers lightly with kosher salt and pepper. (This can be done up to 24 hours ahead of time. Refrigerate the skewers and lightly pat them dry before grilling.) Heat a gas or charcoal grill until it is very hot. Place the skewers on the hottest part of the grill, and cook them for about 6 minutes, turning twice. Remove the skewers when the edges of the prosciutto are crisp, and the melon is warm. Serve immediately, with a bowl of smoked paprika almonds and a jug of Sparkling Summer Sangria. Makes 16.

Grilled Melon & Prosciutto Skewers Melon with prosciutto is a classic Italian antipasto, and a great beginning to any summer meal. String balls of cantaloupe on bamboo skewers (found in the Asian food section of a local grocer), and between the melon, fold in salty ribbons of prosciutto. When grilled lightly, these skewered hors d’oeuvres have a smoky warmth and sweetness that pairs perfectly with a glass of fruity sangria. Serve them with a bowl of smoky, spicy paprika almonds from The Greener Grocer in the North Market.

Grilled Steak with Zucchini-Tomato Relish When it comes to a summer party, what’s easier than a peppercrusted grilled steak? This grilled steak is served with a chopped relish of grilled zucchini (cooked with the steak for maximum convenience) tossed with tomatoes and a light vinegar. Together the rich steak and bright vegetables are the perfect summer pair. The key to cooking a good steak is buying a good steak. Look for dry-aged, naturally-raised meat. (We recommend the boneless ribeye steaks from Bluescreek Farm Meats in the North Market). Two pounds is usually enough, when sliced, to serve 8 guests. But use your best judgment here – if feeding an especially hungry crowd, you may want as much as 3 pounds.
Ingredients u 2 pounds
boneless ribeye steak, ideally at least 1 inch thick or peanut oil u 1 tablespoon kosher salt u 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper u Canola
For the relish: u 2 large zucchini, about 1 pound total u 16 ounces small grape tomatoes, sliced in half lengthwise u 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil u 2 tablespoons rice vinegar u Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
Directions Remove the steak from the refrigerator at least an hour before cooking, so that it can come to room temperature. Blot dry with paper towels and brush with a light layer of canola or peanut oil. Mix the kosher salt and black pepper in a small bowl, and rub it into both sides of each steak. Cut the zucchini in half lengthwise and brush the cut sides lightly with canola or peanut oil. Heat a gas or charcoal grill to its highest heat. When it is quite hot (you cannot hold your hand just above the grill for more than 2 seconds at a time) add the steaks. Also add the zucchini, cut sides down. Sear the steaks for 4 minutes on each side. Then lower the heat, or move the steaks to the coolest part of the grill. Flip the zucchini over.
Cover the grill and cook for 4 to 8 minutes (4 minutes for medium-rare; 8 minutes for medium-well). Remove the lid and check the steak for doneness. If done to your liking, place the steak on a cutting board and cover with foil. Let the steak rest for 10 minutes before slicing. While the steak is resting, prepare the zucchini-tomato relish. Cut the grilled zucchini into small cubes, and toss with the halved grape tomatoes. Add the olive oil, rice vinegar, and salt and pepper to taste. Toss to combine. Slice the steak against the grain, and spread it on a large platter. Spread about half of the zucchini-tomato relish on top. Serve immediately, with the remaining zucchini relish served separately from a bowl. Serves 8.
Red Potato Salad with Yogurt, Basil & Shallots Here’s a refreshing summer salad of tiny red potatoes, cooked until creamy and tossed with tangy yogurt, a touch of sweet honey and handfuls of fresh basil. This is a welcome respite from too-heavy, mayonnaise-laden potato salads. It can also be made ahead of time and left in the refrigerator to absorb even more flavor.
Ingredients u 3 pounds
small red potatoes u 2 tablespoons table salt u 1 cup plain yogurt u 1/4 cup mayonnaise u 2 tablespoons honey, warmed until liquid u 1 lemon, zested u 4 large shallots, peeled and chopped roughly u 2 loosely packed cups fresh sweet basil, roughly chopped u Freshly ground black pepper
Directions Put the potatoes and salt in a large pot of boiling water and cook for 20 minutes or until quite tender. Drain and, as quickly as you can, while they’re still hot, chop the
potatoes in quarters and put in a large bowl. Whisk the yogurt, mayonnaise and honey together. Toss the potatoes with the dressing, lemon zest, shallots and basil. Taste and season with black pepper and additional salt, if necessary. Refrigerate. Serve cold or at room temperature. Serves 8.

frozen puff pastry, thawed u 1/2 cup whipping cream u 1/2 cup sour cream u 1/4 cup powdered sugar u 1 teaspoon vanilla u Pinch of salt u 8 ounces strawberries, hulled and sliced u 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar u 1 tablespoon white sugar u Turbinado or raw sugar, for sprinkling u Mint sprigs, to garnish
Directions
Strawberry & Sour Cream Tartlets Desserts that can be made ahead of time are ideal, and this is one of those. It looks incredibly elegant—golden puffed squares of pastry, filled with a tangy whipped cream, and heaped with fresh summer strawberries. But all the components can be made ahead in very little time and assembled in a snap. Your guests will never know how easy these are—only that they want another one.
162
Capital-Style.com May/June 2011
Heat the oven to 400 degrees F. Roll the sheet of puff pastry out on a floured countertop and cut into 8 squares. Repeat with the second sheet. Place the squares on two baking sheets lined with parchment or Silpats. Bake for 15 minutes, or until the squares are puffed and golden. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the pastries cool for 5 minutes. While the pastries are still warm, press the centers down with the back of a spoon, creating an indented well. Let the pastry cool. (They can be made 24 hours in advance and stored in an airtight container at room temperature after cooling.) Using a stand mixer, hand mixer, or stick blender, whip the whipping cream and sour cream for about 5 minutes or until it has thickened considerably and holds soft peaks. Whip in the powdered sugar, vanilla and salt. Chill until ready to assemble the tarts. (This filling and the berries can also be prepared up to 24 hours ahead of time.) Toss the sliced strawberries with the balsamic vinegar and the white sugar. Refrigerate until ready to assemble the tarts. When ready to serve the tarts, place a spoonful of the whipped sour cream in the center of a puff pastry tartlet shell. Spoon a few strawberry slices on top, and sprinkle with turbinado sugar. Garnish with a mint sprig. Repeat with the other tartlets and serve immediately. Makes 16.

city’s arts district as perfectly as this joint—which at 25 years old is the grandfather of the scene. Rigsby’s is where you go when you’re looking for a fine-dining experience without the fussiness associated with some high-end places. The focus here is on the food— always-stunning plates of Mediterranean- and Italian-
inspired fare. In the dining room, exposed brick walls are dressed up with oversized art. The distinctive, original works help Rigsby’s blend seamlessly with its arts-district neighbors, and the effect is like eating dinner in a gallery—only with an always-lively Hop-night vibe. Doing Dinner intimate anniversary dinner to a raucous birthday party. Plan on arriving early to leave time for a cocktail at the bar, a fab place to see and be seen. Try a crisp and refreshing Kir Royale, a crimson classic made here with Veuve Cliquot and crème de cassis, or the Pear Garden, a sweeter rubycolored concoction mixing crème de cassis with pear vodka, cranberry juice and lemon. After you kick the night off with drinks, your meal will start with a basket of artisan breads from Rigsby’s own Eleni-Christina Bakery. The assortment varies—sourdough and a multigrain loaf studded with walnuts and raisins are standards—but it’s reliably soft and delicious. The Burrata appetizer is a must-order for cheese lovers. A hunk of fresh mozzarella is heated until it’s soft and creamy, then plopped onto smoky roasted peppers and fresh basil leaves. The delicious concoction is made to be scooped onto crackery planks of Sardinian flatbread. Seafood makes up a good bulk of the menu, and the Branzino entree is an especially impressive dish. Branzino is a Mediterranean sea bass grilled and served whole (yes, with the head
and tail, so it’s best suited for adventurous eaters). It’s a delicate fish with a clean, sweet taste, and grilling it whole means you don’t lose a lot of moisture, ensuring meat that’s nice and succulent. Here it’s served with roasted slivers of fennel and a parmesanand-tomato conserva, a thick gazpacho-like sauce. If you’re in the mood for meat, go with the towering Veal Involtini. Poundedthin slices of tender veal are wrapped around a salty mix of breadcrumbs, pine nuts and caciocavalto, a provolone-like Italian cheese. Those meat rolls are stacked on a heap of spaghetti squash ribbons and juicy tomatoes that quickly breaks down into a sweet-tasting sauce perfect for sopping up with forkfuls of veal. Finally, Rigsby’s is known for its inventive desserts, and the Apple Tart Tartin is a standout. Made with caramelized apples from Lynd’s Fruit Farm in Pataskala, the elegant upside-down pie slice is served in a pool of decadent cinnamon-caramel sauce. Here’s to aging gracefully— and still setting trends. Shelley Mann is the editor of Crave, Columbus’ new dining magazine. For more, visit ColumbusCrave.com.
Meet the Rigsbys Columbus native Kent Rigsby, 58, started cooking casually in college and fell fully in love with food during a summer on a Greek island. He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan and spent some time in New York, then eventually headed to San Francisco and enrolled in culinary school. After honing his skills in several restaurants, he returned to Columbus and became chef at German Village’s much-praised Lindey’s. Three years later, he opened Rigsby’s Cuisine Volatile (now Rigsby’s Kitchen). His wife, Tasi, 46, had grown up in her Greek father’s restaurants. A lifelong dancer, she retired from ballet in 1995 to help run Rigsby’s. In 2007, the couple opened a more casual restaurant nearby, Tasi Café. (See “Prima Restaurateur,” page 168.)

asi Rigsby has an appetite for two things: food and dance. “My father owned three restaurants in San Francisco,” she said. “My mother was a ballet dancer.” Tasi herself started dancing at a young age and trained with the San Francisco Ballet. She went on to dance profes-
sionally with the Pennsylvania Ballet in Philadelphia and BalletMet in Columbus. Her love of food came from her family, where she learned to cook and appreciate food from her father and grandmother. “When I was a dancer, I would have dinner parties. People would spend the night. fast parties,” she said. “Food was always a part of what I would do.” Now 46, Tasi can most often be found floating across the floors at the two restaurants she runs with her husband, longtime chef Kent Rigsby, or shuttling their two daughters to dance and gymnastics. Together, the Rigsbys own Short North hot spots Rigsby’s Kitchen and Tasi Café and raise dancer Eleni, 16, and gymnast Zoe, 11. It’s all a family affair, according to Kent. “The children are engaged with the restaurants,” he said. They often dine together at the restaurants as family time. Working with Tasi, he said, is “a good thing.” And as a mother, she’s passionate and dynamic. “But strong, too,” he said. “She doesn’t let the kids get away with everything.” Tasi expresses her love of food by cooking for her family, sometimes with her husband. But she says it’s comical when the two of them are in the kitchen together. “It’s so funny. We’re like a television show,” she said. “We always ask, ‘Why are you doing it that way?’ ” Tasi, for example, makes stock as her grandmother taught her, seasoning it at the beginning of the cooking process. Kent makes it the French way, adding salt only at the end. To settle the dispute, the
couple asked their daughters to decide which version they liked better. The kids chose Tasi’s. Now Kent makes his stock that way at home and at the restaurant. But Tasi is quick to concede to Kent’s expertise in the kitchen. “It’s all about seasoning,” she said. “He seasons food better than anyone I know.” When Tasi handles the cooking at home, she leans toward ethnic cuisines such as Moroccan or Japanese. “I’ll make chicken, lamb or pork tagine,” she said. “Or a grassfed steak. That and a little salad or pasta. That’s good stuff.” But she hasn’t stopped dancing; she now dances ballroom competitively. She’ll dance a few hours a day for two or three days a week with her partner from Cleveland. Or they’ll try to spend an entire weekend perfecting their moves, using a room at Lifetime Fitness that is open 24 hours if they can’t get a studio. And just as they always have, Tasi’s passions continue feeding each other. “I’m having a good time,” she said. “I’m psychotic about working out. I like to be hungry.” Robin Davis is The Columbus Dispatch food editor. For more, visit DispatchKitchen.com.

W
hen Kent and Tasi Rigsby set out to open a more casual counterpart to the fairly structured Rigsby’s Kitchen, they envisioned a funky little breakfast place to serve the Short North neighborhood. What they got was a popular all-day destination not just for locals, but for people from all over the city who battle the limited parking or even ride their bikes in to enjoy breakfast or lunch in the rustic-chic space. Named after Mrs. Rigsby, Tasi seats about 40 at a handful of two-tops, communal tables and stools at the bar. Wooden tables sit on concrete floors with red and yellow metal chairs. Floor to ceiling windows let in lots of natural light, while exposed brick and pipes lend to the charm. And prices that are generally in the $6-$8 range make it even more appealing. The line for breakfast starts early, even on weekends. Diners may find themselves sharing one of the long tables with older folks getting an early start to the day or young hipsters recovering from a night out. The coffee alone is reason to come in. It’s smooth and silky Illy brand, self-served from thermoses ($2.75). A steady stream of people come in just for the coffee, and maybe a pastry from Eleni-Christina

Bakery (owned by the Rigsbys and named after their oldest daughter) to take with them. But most people dine in, ordering at the counter then snagging a seat. While the line can be long, seats always seem to become available before the food is ready.
What to eat Breakfast is served all day here, featuring an array of egg items: a Greek scramble with
zucchini, tomatoes and feta cheese ($6); a classic egg sandwich with Canadian bacon on a croissant ($7); or a choice of frittatas, with anything from chorizo and peppers to smoked salmon ($8). One of the signature breakfast items features eggs in a supporting rather than starring role: French toast made with thick slices of cinnamon challah dunked in egg batter and sautéed until
golden brown. The bread is then topped with sautéed bananas and Ohio maple syrup, making for a sweet and gooey delight ($7). Those looking for hash browns can accompany their breakfasts with potato latkes instead, topped with a dollop of sour cream and a sprinkling of fresh chives ($2.95) or make the potato pancakes a meal topped with smoked salmon ($6.95). Let’s Lunch would be a shame to pass on the lunch offerings, which start at 11 a.m. Customers can choose from sandwiches such as grilled cheddar and tomato on sourdough ($7) to chicken salad with sun-dried tomatoes, feta and black olives on a croissant ($8). The restaurant also offers a handful of “comfort food classics.” Topping the list is an excellent oven-roasted chicken which is juicy and delicious, and made even better doused with the lemon-thyme reduc-
tion that is lighter than gravy, but thicker than pan sauce. The chicken comes with perfectly roasted potatoes and a mesclun salad ($10). Another outstanding option is the bowl of macaroni and cheese ($9), studded with peas and chunks of Black Forest ham. The aged cheddar gives the creamy sauce tons of flavor without being gooey or heavy. Customers can round out their meal with a bowl of tricolored slaw ($3) made spicy from the addition of Thai chili sauce in the creamy dressing or skin-on fries with an almost imperceptible dusting of Parmesan and red pepper flakes ($3).
What to drink Aside from the mugs of coffee, customers can enjoy a glass of prosecco ($6) or have it made into a mimosa with freshsqueezed orange juice ($6.50). Another option for the breakfast crowd is a Bloody Mary ($6.50) made with a house blend of tomato juice and spices mixed with vodka. Those looking for something nonalcoholic can sip a Boylan’s soda ($2.50).

Now, Hanna has five employees and countless fans, from brides to corporations. She also keeps the neighborhood folk smiling with her weekly cupcake happy hour. “It started with me out of my kitchen, baking in pajamas,” she said. “I don’t usually get to bake anymore. My greatest passion: Making every day count My biggest annoyance: Politics in casual conversation My favorite place to be: On my road bike. I have been a cyclist for four years now, and I’ve put 5,000 miles on my bike. My ideal day includes: Spending time with my husband. A ride. And a nice dinner with a big bottle of wine—that’s another passion of mine! For my last supper, I would choose: To be on Amelia Island, off of Florida. They have a lot of open patios with fountains. Having seafood when you’re there—there’s nothing better. When I want to truly treat myself, I: Oh, spa! Have a spa day. The last thing that made me smile is: My husband. He does the little things that people forget. On Sunday, he bought me a stack of magazines and left a note in the middle that said “I love you.”
