Wine cellar design reflects a collector’s personal taste, interest
C
ollections are intriguing ways for individuals to define themselves. It makes no difference whether they collect old coins, comic books, stamps or bottles of wine; passion is the driving force behind the collection itself. And when it comes to collecting wine, passion can be expressed on many levels. Some wine collectors keep it simple, and some use it as a symbol of social status. Others take wine collecting to a whole new level. Many times, collecting is not about the wine in the bottle, but how the bottles of wine will be displayed. When a wine collector has a vast collection of rare vintages, it is crucial to maintain a certain temperature so the wine doesn’t turn. There is nothing more disheartening to a wine collector than pouring a $400 bottle of wine down the drain. An excellent preventative measure can be a temperature-controlled wine cellar. When designing a wine cellar, the formula can be as complicated as 2+1/2piR2bh(b1=b2) or as simple as 1+2=3. It depends upon the owner’s expectations of the space and his or her priorities for protecting his or her assets. Unfinished basements in central Ohio maintain a fairly consistent temperature. However, with more basements being converted to additional living area, it is more difficult to regulate the temperature of wine storage without a designated space. Wine cellars are personal to collectors, and no two are alike. Some wine cellars are concealed behind walls to reveal their precious contents only A GUIDE TO REMODELING RIGHT
once entering the room, while others showcase their contents through glass walls illuminated with accent lighting. The level of sophistication can vary depending on the emotions the collectors wish to stir when viewing their collections. An enthusiast who enjoys the ambiance of tasting his or her wines in a traditional, quiet, dimly lit cellar with a few special friends has a unique set of rules for the design of his or her cellar. Those who want a more showy contemporary space similar to that of many highend restaurants will have their own rules. Either way, keeping a high-quality cellar at consistent temperature and humidity levels requires as much science as design technique. For collectors, the art form is the wine and their passion is revealed through the way they display their collections and share their knowledge of wineries and vineyards. It might be the case that investing in a cooling and humidification system might not be necessary.

Some collectors turn their collection so quickly there is no time for a bottle to go bad. For those bottles that will have to wait to be consumed, their successful storage will benefit from a climate-controlled cellar. Ultimately, a wine cellar doesn’t have to be all about size, lighting, storage layout,
interior design aesthetic or budget. It simply has to address the priorities of the collector and reflect the collector’s level of passion for his or her special interest. By Keith Sharrock, design consultant, Dave Fox Design/ Build Remodelers WWW.TRUSTNARI.ORG

AT HEART?
iven today’s economic climate, businesses should be providing their customers the best service possible, now more than ever. It’s important to know that company representatives have homeowners’ best interests at heart when being invited into clients’ homes. This is why an initial interview process is a great opportunity for A company representative homeowners considering a remodelshould ask detailed ing project to gauge their comfort level questions to determine with different companies. During this process, homeowners identify their top a client’s needs, dreams choices and separate the service-oriand budget. ented companies from the pack. Some interviews begin with a detailed sales presentation that explains a company’s products and services. Keep in mind, however, some companies might offer only their brands or recommend service techniques that yield them bigger profit margins. When this appears to be the situation, ask direct questions about the alternatives. 6
NARI OF CENTRAL OHIO
While this type of sales presentation might work well when shopping for minor repairs or replacement products, it’s not a good indicator that a customer would be happy with a company’s work on a larger project. When a service-oriented remodeler has a customer’s best interest at heart, it shows. A company representative should ask detailed questions to determine a client’s needs, dreams and budget. The number of questions varies depending on the complexity of project. Some typical questions for a kitchen remodel might include: • Who will be using the kitchen primarily? • Are they right-handed or left-handed? • How tall are persons who might be using the kitchen? • Is there a history of back problems in the family? • What style of food are the homeowners most likely to prepare? • For what other activities is the kitchen used? • Are there any children in the home? If so, what ages? • How often do children use the kitchen? For what activities? These questions focus on functionality as well as design. With help from the homeowners, a company representative can grasp the overall vision and guide their clients in a direction they might not have considered. Questions, answers, active listening and detailed notes pave the way for design and pricing that accurately represent the homeowners’ needs. A remodeling experience should be enjoyable, as homeowners add equity while creating the home of their dreams. By Tim Irwin, owner, TI Property Improvements

WINTER REV-UP!
Cold-weather remodeling projects offer homeowners timely advantages After the leaves fall and the temperature plummets, the world around us seems to come to a screeching halt. And if the colder temperatures weren’t enough, Ohio’s gray skies further help to drive us inside the comfort of our homes. So do bears really have the right idea? Should we just hibernate and wait for warmer weather to return? Some might say yes, but not your local National Association of Remodeling Industry (NARI) contractor. As a matter of fact, winter is one of the best times of year to complete a remodeling project. Before you “bah humbug” my statement, hear me out. 10

To the surprise of many homeowners, the time of year has little
or no impact on the ability to undertake a remodeling project. In fact, winter presents many opportunities that other seasons don’t. The Early Bird Really Does Get the Worm When the weather breaks in spring, people start thinking about spending time outdoors. And when they think about being outdoors, they also consider how much they’d enjoy spring days from a new sunroom, screened porch or patio. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Spring is the time of year most central Ohioans decide to undertake a remodeling or roomaddition project. If you decide to start your project at this time, it likely will be well into summer before you’re able to enjoy your new space. Most remodeling contractors get inundated with spring projects. This, in turn, delays start and completion dates. Finding a professional contractor to do your work likely will require patience if you chose to wait until spring. So why wouldn’t you want to get ahead of the game and enjoy the first day of nice weather from your newly remodeled area?
Time Is On Your Side To the surprise of many homeowners, the time of year has little or no impact on the ability to undertake a remodeling project. In fact, winter presents many opportunities that other seasons don’t. There are fewer building permit applications, which result in quicker approval times. During summer months, it can take up to four or five
weeks for a building permit to be approved, while during winter months it might only take one to two weeks. Inspectors also are more available to conduct routine inspections due to lower volume. This means your project keeps moving. The first rule of Economics 101 — supply and demand — also plays its part in winter projects. Materials are easier to obtain in most cases because demand is lower. Vendors and subcontractors are not handling as much volume, so their products and services can be acquired without delay. So if you’re not a big fan of waiting, winter might be the right time to start a remodeling project.
Remodeling Realities Interior remodeling and room-addition projects can be completed year-round in central Ohio. NARI remodeling contractors understand how to protect your home from dirt, dust and inclement weather while your project is in progress. The level of service you expect from a remodeling contractor can be delivered in the winter months with the same quality outcome you deserve. Maybe it’s time to spice up the new year with a remodeling project. Get a jump on spring to help cure those winter blues. by Bryce Jacob, vice president, Dave Fox Design/Build Remodelers

ot all cool gadgets are for kids or dreamed up for the silver screen. Some grown-up gadgets that might seem made for the movies offer neat solutions for homeowners. Do you remember the creepy creature that Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character fought in the movie Predator? You might recall the creature had a pretty sophisticated “thermal imaging” device in its helmet. Now, a few decades later, thermal imaging technology can uncover the mysteries of your home. So what does thermal imaging do and why should you care? Well, if you’ve read this far, going green is important to you. Thermal imaging can help make your home more energy efficient, thus reducing your carbon footprint and the impact on your wallet. A scan of your house can be conducted with a thermal imaging camera. This high-tech gadget detects temperature changes in your home. A scan can help pinpoint exactly where you might have an energy-loss problem so you don’t have to guess. A thermal imaging scan can reveal where insulation is missing. It also can detect moisture problems. You actually can see heat and energy loss though improperly sealed doors and windows. Thermal imaging even can show you where unwanted “predators’’ might be nesting in your home with its sophisticated temperature technology. Virtually any home can benefit from a thermal scan. Homeowners with new home warranties might receive peace of mind by having their investment inspected. Homebuyers also might seek out a thermal inspection as part of the home inspection process.
