Insulate your home wisely to conserve energy and save money

Domestic Security

M

any years ago during a public speaking class at The Ohio State University, I made a request that did not impress my professor, to say the least. I tried to link energy conservation and national security by asking everyone to turn off their lights for our nation’s security. The energy conservation movement was young and just getting started. Growing up in New Jersey during the 1970s gas embargo had taught me one thing: life is hard without gas for your car. Many years have come and gone since, but today we hear a lot more about renewable energy and being green. But energy conservation still seems like the most logical aspect of environmentalism. Let’s face it — saving what we have is important.

Today, as in the 1970s, adequately insulated homes not only save homeowners’ money but also conserve resources. Lower energy usage keeps the demand factor from pushing prices higher. Remember last year at the gas pump? A low supply equaled high demand and higher prices. There are many ways homeowners can make their homes more energy efficient right now. One method is to check home insulation or have it checked by a professional. Proper insulation keeps a home warmer in winter and cooler in summer. Insulation

performance is measured in Rvalues, or, the ability to resist heat flow. The higher the Rvalue, the greater the resistance to energy loss. Different R-values are recommended for walls, attics, basements and crawl spaces, depending on a home’s geographical location. Insulation works best when air is not running though it or around it. Sealing air leaks is an important process to undertake before insulating to get the highest performance and energy savings. In Ohio, the U.S. Department of Energy suggests that

a home’s attic insulation be R49, walls be R–18, floor above unheated areas be R–25 and crawl space walls be R-19. Many homes I have inspected fall short of these suggestions. Besides conserving natural resources, tax savings are another good reason for insulation. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act provides a federal tax credit of 30 percent of the cost up to $1,500 to insulate during the calendar year 2009 – 2010. So take this opportunity to check your home’s energy performance and take advantage of the tax credit. Save energy for national security and green for your wallet. by Glen Kubinski, Energy Tech Insulation, Inc.

CHOICES ABOUND

Evaluate the pros and cons when selecting new flooring

Choosing the right flooring can be challenging if you are unsure about the advantages and disadvantages of today’s flooring types. Keep in mind that just because a floor looks great in someone else’s home, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best option for your home or lifestyle.

6

NARI OF CENTRAL OHIO

CARPET Many consumers prefer carpet because it is soft, easy to replace and sound absorbent. Another advantage is carpet’s nearly infinite number of color selections, styles and patterns. Before purchasing carpet, consider the possibility it might fade under intense sunlight, stain removal sometimes can be difficult, and certain types such as Berber are prone to snags and not recommended for high-traffic areas.

Keep in mind that just because a floor looks great in someone else’s home, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best option for your home or lifestyle.

HARDWOOD Hardwood floors also are a popular choice. Hardwood is available in a variety of species, colors, widths and finishes. Hardwood flooring comes in two types: solid and engineered. Solid hardwood floors are easy to clean and offer the greatest flexibility for refinishing or repairing because the surface can be recoated and stained multiple times. However, solid hardwood floors can be dented or scratched by such things as a pet’s nails, highheel shoes or dropped objects. Also, solid hardwood floors are sensitive to humidity and water, thus limiting where they can be installed. When compared to solid

hardwood floors, engineered hardwood floors provide greater stability and are less affected by moisture and sunlight. However, a disadvantage is deep scratches and dents cannot be sanded out. LAMINATE Laminate flooring provides the realistic look of wood, stone or tile at a lower cost. Advantages of laminate flooring include its durable surface, which is stain resistant and low maintenance. These types of floors are great for active households, especially those with kids and pets. Disadvantages include fading from sunlight and the inability of laminate to be refinished or recoated.

CERAMIC TILE Another durable flooring surface commonly used in homes is ceramic tile. Ceramic floors are long lasting, low maintenance and available in a variety of designs, colors and patterns. Because of their durability, ceramic floors are an excellent choice for high traffic areas such as foyers. Some things to consider when shopping for ceramic flooring are tiles can be cooler to the touch than other flooring types and can chip or crack. VINYL Vinyl is another economical flooring choice. Vinyl floors are available in an endless variety of colors and patterns. Designed for high traffic areas where

water, beverages or food could damage carpet or hardwood, vinyl usually is used in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms or mudrooms. Discoloration, denting and visible seams are all potential disadvantages. IT’S YOUR PREROGATIVE Your flooring choice plays a huge role in the look, feel, and usefulness of each room. So when shopping for a new floor, ask about the advantages and disadvantages of floor coverings you’re considering. Once expectations are set, the chances are you will be much happier with whatever flooring you choose. by Tim Henson, president of America’s Floor Source

remodeling with

UNIVERSALDESIGN

WHAT IS UNIVERSAL DESIGN? Universal Design has been around for years, but it still seems like a foreign idea to most. However, many people already have Universal Design features in their homes but don’t realize it. The most common applications are: 1. First-floor bedrooms and bathrooms 2. First-floor laundry rooms 3. Accessible appliances and storage in kitchens 4. Curbless entry showers with built-in seats and hand-held shower wands 5. Lever handles on doors and plumbing fixtures 6. Slip-resistant flooring surfaces 7. Abundant natural and artificial lighting 8. Handrails in areas of elevation change 9. Grab bars in wet areas 10. Electronic safety and security devices During a remodel, it’s important to understand that you do not have to implement all of these features to incorporate Universal Design into your home. In some cases, there just isn’t enough room to put a master bedroom and bathroom on the first floor. However, it might be possible to stack storage closets on the first and second floors that later can be converted into an elevator shaft. This solution provides storage today and second-floor bedroom access for all in the future. 14

MAKING HOMES ACCESSIBLE TO ALL IS THE FIRST STEP TOWARD EMBRACING UD

F

or many homeowners, remodeling is an exciting adventure. But homeowners typically make plans based on today’s wants or needs with little thought of what tomorrow might bring. Predicting the future is where Universal Design comes into play. Gaining an understanding of how to make one’s home as accessible as possible to people regardless of their ages, size or physical limitations is the first step toward embracing Universal Design features in remodeling projects.

Each home possesses unique opportunities for accessibility, but it often takes an expert to identify Universal Design solutions within one’s budget or problems that might arise. Before starting a remodeling project that doesn’t meet your needs five or 25 years from now, it’s important to perform a personal needs assessment. PERSONAL NEEDS ASSESSMENT The most successful remodeling projects come from solid planning that helps a home reach its full potential. Before committing to a plan, take stock of your needs by asking yourself questions such as these: 1. How will these goals affect family members in my home? 2. How long do I wish to live in my home? 3. How will the dynamics of my family change? 4. Are there extended family members who could be living with me in the future? 5. Will I have visitors with physical disabilities? SELECT A REMODELER If your project requires professional expertise from a universal remodeler, it is

important to do your homework. There are many remodelers who claim to be experts in Universal Design, but actually are planning to become one on your project. The demand for Universal Design has exposed a shortage of qualified remodelers with experience designing these types of projects. The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) offers a Universal Design course and a Universal Remodeler certification. Certifications help homeowners feel confident about hiring qualified remodelers, but a remodeler’s ability to demonstrate their knowledge is where the rubber meets the road. Finding a qualified remodeler to create a Universal Design floor plan doesn’t necessarily mean you will be designing the home of the future. It simply means you are redesigning your space today for optimum use tomorrow. So before rushing into a remodeling project, take some time to think about how you and your family will live in your home today, tomorrow and well into the future. by Bryce Jacob, vice president, Dave Fox Design/Build Remodelers
