For many homeowners, tearing down the walls that surround a kitchen truly allows it to become the heart of the home.

Merge Activities

An open floor plan allows homeowners to merge their home’s activity zones. In contrast, food preparation, serving, eating, relaxing and entertaining require different zones in a traditionally designed home. Homeowners have a variety of aﬀordable options when it comes to natural stone countertops

hen undertaking a kitchen remodel, countertops rank in importance with cabinetry. Therefore, homeowners should consider their lifestyles before selecting a countertop. Homeowners with young children might opt for a material that combines good looks with durability. On the other hand, empty nesters who can take more care with food prep and cooking find their choices expanding exponentially. When it comes to form and function, granite is considered the pinnacle of stone countertops. Prices range from affordable to expensive. More often than not, this little gem makes its way onto most homeowners’ “want” lists. By doing their homework, homeowners might be surprised to find out they can afford granite. It might not be the exotic varieties or massive slabs they have been drooling over, but it might come close. By choosing common-variety granite with a thinner cut, simple edge profile and limited cutouts, homeowners likely will spend less than they would on most man-made quartz or solid-surface materials. Homeowners who go this route should remember that although certain granites are more common, each natural stone countertop is a totally unique piece of art created by Mother Nature. If slabs are too much for the budget, consider granite tiles. Several options exist in various price ranges. The highest-end option is preassembled granite tile with a substantial decorative-edge profile. This eliminates any unfinished or awkward-looking edges at the sink rail. The midrange option is large format tile (16-, 18- or 24-inch squares) with a granite strip incorporated as the sink rail. The most affordable option is a smaller 12-by-12 tile with a wood strip finishing the countertop edge. A large format tile used in a solid shade with minimal grout joints and complementary grout color helps give the illusion of a granite slab. If personal tastes lean more toward a matte-finished countertop, consider limestone, travertine, slate or honed-marble tiles. However, keep in mind that these materials come with some inherent drawbacks, so research each carefully before making a commitment. Marble slab countertops, especially in white, are gaining popularity and add a sophisticated, modern look to any kitchen. Some marble, however, is more porous than granite and might etch and stain if it comes into prolonged contact with certain foods. n today’s price-sensitive real estate market, it’s imperative for homeowners to keep the fronts of their homes looking their best, especially when preparing a property for sale in the near future. Whether selling or staying, homeowners can best achieve curb appeal when their landscaping has visual impact. A properly designed landscape plan is a sure winner. This includes attractive and colorful year-round plantings that reﬂect a home’s architecture. A well-landscaped front yard isn’t limited to plant material either. In fact, plant material is just the window dressing. A front yard’s structure begins with hardscape. An inviting entrance with brick pavers, an ashlar pattern of Pennsylvania bluestone on a walkway, or a courtyard feature accented with stone walls for retaining will increase real estate value and will certainly distinguish a home from the neighbors’ common concrete walks and foundation plantings. When planning a front yard landscape, it’s pertinent to design toward providing prominent views of a home’s architecture. This is accomplished simply by designing the walk 10 to 12 feet from the garage or directly oﬀ the front curb. It is important also to design walkways to be a minimum of 4 to 6 feet wide so guests and relatives can walk comfortably in pairs as they approach the front entry. visual perspective of a home’s architecture. It also allows for a landscape plan with sweeping planting beds across the lawn, massed with colorful shrubs, perennials, ground cover and ornamental trees. Annual flowers come next. These can be planted in larger areas to provide abundant and striking color in a landscape. Annual flowers also provide continuous color throughout the growing season (May through September) and actually will be the dominant visual attraction, while other plants provide a two-week color splash on average when in bloom from early spring to mid-autumn. Garden structures and focal points define a landscape and provide additional interest to a front yard area. Examples include wrought-iron gates, picket fences, stone or brick piers, small water features, garden art or just a simple birdbath. These touches personalize the front yard and cause passers-by to slow down and take notice of the whole home’s design, especially if they’re house hunting. More than anything, remember that a clean, well-manicured front yard and garden always will be an attractive selling point and continue to bring thoughtful comments from friends and neighbors year-round.
