NARI celebrates its 25th anniversary During the past 25 years, the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) has been connecting central Ohio consumers with top remodeling professionals. NARI has grown to more than 250 trusted professional members since its founding as a not-for-profit trade association in 1985. As NARI celebrates its silver anniversary, we invite homeowners to see for themselves why consumers say NARI members are making the difference in their remodeling experiences.
For those who have had difficultly locating a skilled contractor, NARI is the best resource in which to turn. NARI contractors undergo a thorough background check and are screened using stringent criteria for experience and craftsmanship. T
here’s a new twist to picking out a bathroom tub these days. Homeowners looking to add a luxurious spa experience to their bathroom remodel now have the option of selecting either a whirlpool or air tub. In many cases, today’s consumers are unaware of air tubs, but these tubs offer distinct differences and some advantages when compared to whirlpools. As a result, air tubs quickly are becoming the purchase of choice. Air tubs offer a steady stream of air, or bubbles, through numerous small holes positioned along a tub’s bottom and sides. On the other hand, whirlpools offer pulsating water produced from powerful jets that hit specific parts of the body. Many people find that air tubs offer a more even massage to the entire body, while whirlpools can create a more therapeutic massage due to their adjustable jet heads. The number of air holes in a tub or water jets in a whirlpool varies per manufacturer. This affects the quality and feel of the massage. Here are some differences to consider:
SANITARY SYSTEM Air tub — There is no doubt that air tub systems are considered one of the most sanitary systems available. Air channels automatically are purged, or dried, which eliminates excess moisture and reduces the possibility of fungi or other organisms growing in these areas. Some manufacturers offer a check valve that eliminates water from entering this chamber at all. Whirlpool — The water in whirlpools enters the tub through piping. While most manufacturers offer a self-drain system to purge these pipes, there is a chance that not all of the water is extracted.
OILS OR BUBBLE BATH Air tub — Air tubs don’t recirculate water, so oils, bubble bath or aromatherapy products can be used. A GUIDE TO REMODELING RIGHT
H T AIR PHOTO COURTESY OF AQUAGLASS
A popular option today, air tubs offer distinct differences and advantages versus whirlpool tubs
Whirlpool — Most whirlpool manufacturers do not recommend using bubble bath or oils because of possible damaging effects to the jets.
WATER LEVEL Air tub — Air tubs only pump air to those holes under water. A lower level of water can be used, which is a safety benefit for families with small children. Whirlpool — Some whirlpools are not designed to run without a certain level of water. By running with improper levels, users risk burning out the pump. Even though there seems to be more advantages to air tubs, many manufactures still see value keeping both in their product line-ups. There also are companies that make an air tub/whirpool unit to offer homeowners the best of both worlds.

Take preventive measures against sump pump failure or burst pipes
S
ump pump failure can cause major problems for homeowners. However, homeowners can take steps to reduce their risk of experiencing a water damage situation. Purchase a sump pump with a battery backup system. These pumps can be found for $140 to $500 at most home improvement stores. Some models can run for as many as 7.5 hours with just one battery. Purchase a generator to help during longer power outages. Reliable models can be as inexpensive as $250. When a sump pump fails and water begins coming into the basement, don’t panic. Contact a local water damage restoration contractor immediately, then contact your insurance agent. Frozen pipes are another major cause of water damage in central Ohio homes, but homeowners can prepare for what winter dishes out: OUTSIDE PLUMBING • Caulk around pipes where they enter the house. Close all foundation vents. It’s likely that open vents are the greatest cause of frozen or split water lines. Cut wood or Styrofoam blocks to fit vent openings, then slide them into vents. Open vents again in spring to prevent dry rot. • Protect outside pipes and faucets. In some homes, outside faucets have a separate shut-off in the basement. If outside faucets feature a separate valve, shut it off. Then go outside and turn on faucets to drain water in the lines. Leave outside faucets on, and return inside to check the outside shut-off valve for a small brass plug or cap. Turn this plug far enough that water drains from the valve. Then, tighten the plug back to its original position, and turn off all outside faucets. • Wrap outside faucets or hose bibs. This should be done if there are no separate valves for turning off outside faucets. After disconnecting garden hoses, use newspaper or rags covered with plastic, fiberglass or molded-foam insulating covers to wrap faucets.
6
NARI OF CENTRAL OHIO
INSIDE PLUMBING • Insulate pipes in unheated areas such as crawl spaces, attics, garages or basements. Use insulating tape or molded pipe sleeve to wrap the entire length of exposed pipes. Cover all valves, pipe-fittings, etc. with insulating tape or fiberglass. • Shut off and drain the water system when leaving home for several days or more. Leaving the furnace on a low setting helps, but that alone might not be enough to prevent freezing. (Before draining the system, remember to turn off the water heater.) Turn off the main shut-off valve, then go through the house and turn on all faucets, sinks, tubs, showers, etc., and flush the toilets. Return to the valve and remove the plug so that the valve can drain completely. Follow-up by retightening the valve and turning off the open faucets. • Open cupboard doors in kitchens and bathrooms. By leaving cupboard doors open when the temperature dips below freezing, homeowners allow pipes behind the cupboards to receive more heat. BREAKAGE • Immediately find the broken pipe’s shut-off valve and turn it off. • If a shut-off valve can’t be located, contact a local water company to access their 24-hour emergency line. • Call a local water damage restoration company to begin the dry out process immediately, and contact your insurance agent. Homeowners should review their insurance policies to ensure they have adequate basement coverage. Drying out the average finished basement can cost anywhere from $4,000 to $8,000. That estimate does not include replacing materials that cannot be recovered during the dry out process. Most insurance policies include a maximum cap of $5,000 for basement losses. Extra insurance can be purchased for a minimal investment. By NARI member Heather Brace, Water Mitigation Manager, Campbell DKI

Ask right questions before signing contract Whether it is updating a kitchen to make it more efficient, turning an ordinary bathroom into a haven of rest and relaxation, or adding a room to meet the needs of a growing family, the goal of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) is to help homeowners find the right professional partner to do their remodeling. Here, NARI members share the short list of questions they usually are asked by homeowners and offer an alternate list of questions homeowners should be asking. Timing and money concerns are the most common questions a home improvement contractor hears. But during an interview, homeowners should be asking about credentials and verifying business practices. Instead, what often is heard is, “When can you start? When will it be finished? How much will it cost?” These questions aren’t enough. Timing might be everything in comedy, but that certainly isn’t the case when it comes to remodeling. If homeowners are going to
have a successful remodeling project, they need to learn the right questions and how to ask them. While a reasonable timetable and budget are important, they shouldn’t be the primary focus of an interview or a job. Homeowners also should focus on trust and quality. Start by asking questions about a company’s business practices and experience with a similar project. After deciding to hire a particular remodeling contractor, then you can discuss when he or she can start and when the project might be finished. Here are some questions NARI members recommend asking before signing a remodeling contract: • How long have you been in business? • Who will be assigned as project supervisor for the job? • Who will be working on the project? Are they employees or subcontractors? • Does your company carry workers compensation and liability insurance?
• What is your approach to a project such as this? • How many projects like mine have you completed in the past year? • May I have a list of references from those projects? • May I have a list of business referrals or suppliers? • What percentage of your business is repeat or referral business? • Are you a member of a national trade association? It’s also important to realize that sometimes it’s not the answers you get that are significant, but what you don’t get. Asking the right questions is not sufficient. You need to pay attention to your instincts and to what information is missing. Remodeling can be a fun experience if you ask questions — questions that remodelers don’t feel that are getting enough of, according to NARI members. So tap into your curiosity and ask away. By NARI

related fields selects winners. They judge entries on problem solving, functionality, aesthetics, craftsmanship, innovation, degree of difficulty and entry presentation. NARI of Central Ohio presented 14 local Contractor of the Year awards in December at its annual awards gala. Selecting the right remodeler is the most important decision homeowners will make during a remodeling project. Choosing a contractor who has entered professional award competitions such as NARI’s Contractor of the Year is a good starting place.
These award entries take a lot of planning and expense to enter and showing quality of work is what winning is all about. These entries are the fruits of a true team effort from contractors’ employees, subcontractors and homeowners. Winning a CotY award means these efforts were successful and the homeowners’ requests and needs were met. Isn’t that a combination you would like for your next project?
