Editor’s Note

fashion tripping

N

ew York Fashion Week is just as glamorous as you might imagine—Hollywood starlets and photo-snapping paparazzi, thumping music and fierce models, sensational sequin shifts and lustworthy jewels. Of course, it also involves notquite-as-glitzy parts, too, like feet that ache ’til they’re numb (notably, mine) and a sprinkling of expected (obnoxious) pretention. But it’s all part of the circus—and the circus is captivating. This year, we wanted to take you with us. So our creative director, Will Shilling—who was recently named best photographer in the state at the Ohio Excellence in Journalism Awards—joined me to help capture that energy. And we hope you feel like you’re part of the journey in “Lights, Camera, Fashion” on page 52. I’ve also picked up a few dos and don’ts during my past few trips to the event. Here are the Top 10 Things I’ve Learned at New York Fashion Week.

1. Unless you are 6 or Sarah Jessica Parker, giant pink tutus are not OK to wear in public. Or anywhere.

Want to join me at Fashion Week—-and around Columbus? Follow my escapades on Twitter at @kristyeckert.

20

2. If you see a model licking her lips—as if that tiny drop of her own saliva will save her—she will pass out within 26 seconds. Two large men in black will swiftly and quietly carry her away. And you, who still has a whole bunch of small-town Midwest in her, will be the only one who seems to notice. You will start to believe you dreamed it up. Until the next show. When it happens again.

5. You should never tweet photos of the fabulous red patent leather platform heels that lured you into the Stuart Weitzman store between shows. Because for the first time ever, your husband will decide to follow you on Twitter. And he will call to ask exactly how much they are. 6. There is a special place in heaven for cabbies who understand a girl in a hurry. 7. No, Tommy Hilfiger’s bodyguard is not standing on anything. He’s just that tall. 8. It does not matter how comfortable the heels were when you bought them. Nor does it matter how many different inserts you try. By 8 o’clock, you do not feel anything like that bouncy lady in the Dr. Scholl’s commercial. You feel like you want to take your stiletto and throw it at your TV screen. 9. I would be cooler if I had a British accent. 10. I would be much cooler if I wore sunglasses inside. All the time. Especially in February. Beyond Fashion Week, this issue is packed with stories I hope will excite you. Be inspired by Donna James (seriously—don’t miss that one; she’s amazing). Be awed by Julie DeVito Butler’s beachy-chic New Albany home (holy pristine house, people!). And be delighted by our fall fashion spread featuring local looks modeled by the all-grown-up Maddie Spielman, who is every bit as wonderful as you might hope Chris and Stefanie’s daughter to be. Enjoy.

3. It should be illegal for a man to own sequin shoes. Unless you pair them with a rainbow polka dot suit, in which case, I’m pretty sure I want to have a drink with you. 4. Apparently, some women can tell the difference between bottled waters. And at least one of them will complain loudly for anyone who will listen that life is unfair because this year’s free, endless supply of bottled water in the lobby is Aquafina, not Fiji.

sweet dream H oping for moody weather on shoot day, we got exactly what we wished for—and then some. But a little rain and rolling thunder couldn’t put a damper on our parade: It only added to the quaint beauty of Skipping Rock Farm in Granville, home of artists Paul and Amy Hamilton. They graciously let us take over for a day, and we think you’ll fall in love with their charming property like we did (crop circle with a baby grand piano, anyone?). Life’s a Cabaret

Slide your top hats on and lace your dancing shoes up, because the Columbus Museum of Art’s 2012 Art Celebration is providing the city with its own European cabaret. The annual soiree, which has helped support the museum for 65 years, is back on Oct. 13. This year’s “Spot Lights, Hot Nights” theme is taking a cue from cabarets of the 1930s. “It’s very glamorous,” says museum spokeswoman Nancy Colvin. More than 500 guests will enjoy food, drinks, art and cabaret-style music, and VIP ticket-holders will be treated to a performance by the Short North Stage Players. Plus, Art Celebration coincides with Art Fusion, a recently added (and more affordable) event held simultaneously at the museum and tailored to young professionals. The two events merge late in the evening. “We start the dancing in the Derby Court,” Colvin says, “and everyone gets to party the night away together.” Art Celebration will kick off with a VIP reception performance by the Short North Stage Players, including actress Kaitlin Descutner, shown here. Tickets for Art Celebration cost $400 for general admission and $650 for VIP. Tickets for Art Fusion start at $100. For more, visit ColumbusMuseum.org or call 614-629-0344.

finding her next Donna James overcame the stereotypes of her teen pregnancy and battled discrimination in the workplace to become one of the highest ranking black executives in the country. Six years after leaving Nationwide, she’s proving retirement doesn’t mean an end—it means a whole new beginning Story by: Beth Stallings I Photos by: will shilling

omething felt off as Donna James awoke in her Miranova apartment and stumbled oddly to the bathroom. The Nationwide executive figured she was overtired, worn out from a business trip that, in 72 hours, jetted her to meetings in Luxembourg, Atlanta and home again. Nauseous and off balance, she fumbled with the door before getting inside. She reached for toilet paper, but failed to grasp anything. Her right hand, she realized, wasn’t working. Woozy, James’ 5-foot, 10-inch frame slid down the wall to the cool, marble floor where her husband would soon find her. She wanted to tell him she was OK, even though she wasn’t. But she couldn’t speak. Ten minutes later, the then

47-year-old was strapped to a gurney realizing, in that moment, she could die. “Lord, I don’t know what you’re trying to tell me,” she thought. “But I am listening.” On that cold day in January 2005, she suffered a roughly hour-long mini stroke. Its cause wasn’t clear, but James suspected her demanding career, and all the accolades it brought, was actually—literally—crippling her. The former CPA had been going full speed for more than two decades at Nationwide, where she started as an entry-level accountant and tirelessly worked to her post as president of Nationwide Strategic Investments, responsible for growing or creating exit strategies for five national and international subsidiary

companies. The product of a hardworking Southern mother and stepfather, James was raised with a strong work ethic. As she rested in her hospital bed, the woman who was at the time one of the highest ranking black females in corporate America wondered whether she could walk away. She eventually decided she had to. The decision wasn’t easy, but James was adept at facing adversity. As a teen mom, she’d overcome you’ve-ruinedyour-life-forever stereotypes to graduate from high school, win a college scholarship and earn an accounting degree. In the corporate world, she continuously proved her success was based on hard work and talent, not race or gender.

Each challenge was met with grace, not anger. Those who spoke hurtful words, intentional or not, were treated with empathy, not bitterness, because she knows that people grow. She approached her nontraditional retirement with the same thoughtfulness. For decades she’d been consumed by the upward motion of her career. It was time to pause, to ask, What do the next 25 years look like? The answer: They must have a purpose. And they have. James, now 55, has shared her business acumen with large, small and startup companies through her firm Lardon & Associates LLC. She has advised giants such as Coca-Cola and more by sitting on company boards. She has earned the nomination of President Barack Obama to chair the National

onna James sat in the back of a taxi, staring out the window as the Columbus skyline came into view. The fresh North Carolina A&T State grad liked what she saw: a clean-looking city that wasn’t too big. It seemed like a nice place for the single mother to raise a 5-year-old son. She would interview the next day at PricewaterhouseCoopers, wearing a classy blue dress borrowed from her mother, who had saved for months to buy it. She just couldn’t show up in one of the two suits she owned—one brown, one blue—as it was obvious she had sewn them herself. She spent two years there as an accountant before being recruited by Nationwide and quickly earning a reputation for tackling tough assignments. Her fearless work ethic soon caught the attention of higher ups at the Fortune 500 company. “She’s a role model—some-

Revealing the Secret Until she was nearly 40, Donna James kept her teen pregnancy private, not wanting to face the judging looks that came with hearing she was a teen mother. James broke her silence in 1999, during her YWCA Women of Achievement Award acceptance speech. With three minutes to say something meaningful, she chose to talk about three things she’d learned you don’t do when confronted with a challenge: 1. You don’t hold anyone else responsible or accountable except yourself. 2. You don’t become blinded by the limitations that other people set for you. 3. You don’t grow bitter with the struggle, because if it’s worthwhile, it will be a struggle. For each lesson, she described a personal experience. The gasp and hush of the audience when she admitted she had been a teen mom was deafening. Afterward, woman after teary-eyed woman thanked James for sharing her story. Either they had a similar situation no one knew about, or had encountered a similar situation and handled it differently. “I never expected there were so many others out there who could identify with that story and were suffering through the pains of not being able to tell,” she says. “It was a more than a catharsis for me, it was a catharsis for other people.”

Growing up...

She wanted to be a psychologist. But with a small child at home, James needed a career track with less schooling. With a scholarship from the accounting department at North Carolina A&T, James decided that’s what she’d do.

At home...

Larry does the cooking. He started the rumor James is a bad cook a long time ago. She can, she insists, but figures if he wants to buy groceries and make her dinner, he can go right on ahead, thank you.

Books are...

Like brain candy to her. She loves historical fiction and those about business (a book on liquidity issues is a pageturner for her).

She modeled...

one you aspire to be like,” said Holly Snyder, president at Nationwide Better Health. The two years she spent working with James, she said, were the most rewarding of her career. James saw people as people—not titles—and she held the bar high for everyone, Snyder said. You were to treat others fairly and with respect, herself not exempt

“She’s authentic. She doesn’t get confused about the noise or the drama or the celebration or the failures.” Larry James, husband

even in the moments of discrimination she encountered. Once, while leading a succession plan exercise where company heads were to rank the top 250 executives in three tiers, one white male executive stopped James, then the vice president of global human relations. “Donna, I just want you to know that I put you in the middle third,” he told her. “Because in my mind, and in the mind of some of my colleagues, the jury is still out on whether you are where you are because you really have talent, or if it’s because you’re black and female.” Fighting through a rash of emotions—hurt, disappointment, anger—James stilled herself before answering, knowing the comment wasn’t meant to be cruel.

Capital-Style.com September/October 2012

“I appreciate your honesty,” she responded. “Because people who look like me think that people who look like you feel that way, but it’s not often that we hear it. But if that’s all it takes to get to this level, then why aren’t there more people who look like me here?” That started a dialogue, James said, and she and that executive became good colleagues. “She focuses on the bigger picture,” said Snyder, who witnessed some moments of discrimination. “It’s always about bettering not just her, but the people around her.” After the encounter—the likes, she says were few at Nationwide—the witty James wrote a poem as a way to express hope in the middle of frustration. It reminded her

that every time she entered a room she is likely younger than everyone else and one of the few black women. “But when I walk into those rooms, I focus on what I want to leave with. I focus on what I can bring to the table,” she said. “It really is about what you do in those moments in spite of how you feel.” It didn’t take long for others to recognize her business savvy. She was applauded for her acumen and executive status in Black Enterprise, Essence, Time and BusinessWeek. Boards such as Limited Brands and Coca-Cola Enterprises sought her expertise. And the accolades haven’t stopped. She continues her work with Limited Brands, and now sits on the boards of Time Warner Cable and Marathon Petroleum Corp.

wit & wisdom

Those who know Donna James best, know her sayings. A few of her inspiring thoughts and catch phrases: Ask questions. “Confidence is not about what you know. It’s about what you know you can learn.” Look for banana peels. “Banana peels are the things you can slip on, that if you take the time to be thoughtful about them, you can find them before they trip you up.” Don’t get stuck in potholes. “On any road to anywhere, you’re going to run into a pothole. And the question is: Are you going to focus on the potholes, or are you going to focus on your end destination?” Say “don’t talk” instead of “shut up.” Have respect for the learning process. “Understand that youth can be impatient and say things that might sound arrogant and ignorant, but it’s a perspective they have in that moment. Go for talented people. They will learn.”

Clockwise, from above: James with Christopher in college and again in 1982; marrying Larry; with Larry and their sons Justin and Christopher; and in Ocean Isle, N.C. with the grandkids

In 2010, President Barack Obama, whose staff had been begging James to submit her resume since his election, appointed her to chair the nonpartisan National Women’s Business Council. As chair of the advisory council to the president, Congress and Small Business Administration, she leads research to understand why and how to promote the growth of women-owned small businesses.

S

ixteen-year-old Donna James dangled her legs off the exam table, alone in a doctor’s office. Tall and thin, the high school athlete—a cheerleader, volleyball player and runner—had missed her period. Finally, the

doctor said aloud what she’d silently feared. She was pregnant. Something inside her sank. Shame was followed by panic, and a fleeting thought of taking her life. Her Baptist faith interceded, reminding the teen it wasn’t just her life she’d be ending. The honor student would have the baby. But before she figured out how to raise a child while finishing both high school and college, she had to tell her mom.

Capital-Style.com September/October 2012

“It was like something had sucked the very life out of her,” James recalled. Still, the lab technician who’d earned her high school diploma at 30 never told James she had ruined her life. But others did. The second oldest in a blended family of six was outcast by friends and treated like a bad kid by adults. “There was an immediate perception of what kind of person you must be, and that was painful,” James said. “I had to personally get strong enough to endure that judgment every time.” It’s why seeing personal dignity trampled grips her like nothing else. And why, in learning only 30 percent of the 1,800 Franklin

County teens who will give birth this year will graduate high school, she had to do something. So she birthed The Center for Healthy Families, which provides teen parents and their families support to succeed. “Children are having children, and they need our help,” said James, who knows she could easily have been a statistic if not for her own home support system. “These are not people you throw away, and these aren’t people you say, ‘Well, they brought this on themselves.’ They’re kids. Kids make mistakes. They should be responsible and accountable. But they need help doing it.” So that’s exactly what The

Trendsetter Center for Healthy Families aims to provide—a support system. The center’s resource advocates help teens map out goals, such as finishing high school and learning fiscal responsibility. And then they arm them with the necessary tools to achieve them. Committing to every teen for at least two years, they make sure each client has a safe home life. If their guardian needs assistance, such as keeping the lights on at home, the center connects them with existing entities that can help. The hope is that by creating a stable home environment, everyone under that roof can thrive. The center’s president and CEO, Toshia Safford, spent two years working with James to outline the purpose of the nonprofit, which they founded in 2009. In focus groups with expecting teens, James would roll up her sleeves, take off her jewelry and speak to them like a loving aunt, Safford said. She wanted to make sure they felt comfortable with her. Which they did. “She has a warmth about her that is very calming,” Safford said. “She is sort of infectious.” In three years, the center has helped more than 150 teens, ranging in age from 13 to 19, and their families.

apartment decorated with vibrant, eye-grabbing artwork. Her husband of 23 years noticed that from the start. “Donna always had an elegance, and a kind of gentle spirituality. It was just the way she carried herself,” recalled Larry, an attorney who worked in her building in the late ’80s. For a year, he admired her between small interactions— a casual joke at the ATM, helping her off the runway at a benefit fashion show (she modeled professionally on the side for nine years). Finally, in 1989, the divorced partner at Crabbe, Brown and James LLP gave his twice-divorced colleague a call. Larry and Donna—who each had a 14-year-old son— were engaged within a month and married less than a year later. Today, they have five grandchildren between their two boys, Christopher (hers), who lives in Columbus and Justin (his), who’s in California. Retirement has given James a chance to dote on them the way she loves. “She’s probably one of the most beautiful human beings I’ve ever known,” Larry said. Being with his wife, he readily admitted, transformed him from an uncompromising, hard-hitting man who lived in black and white, to a nicer version who’s learned to live in the grays. “We don’t just complete each other, we enhance each other.” It’s easy for him to see why, to the dozen up-andcoming black professionals they mentor through the African American Leadership Academy every year, James is like Obi-Wan. Seldom judgmental, she has the patience to meet everyone where they are, he said. But she’s not afraid to put

anyone in their place, either. Make an off-color remark, for example, and James will let you know. It’s one of the qualities Larry loves most— that she won’t allow anyone to be ugly around her. “She’ll figure out an appropriate time to say something,” he said. “She can do it with such grace, people more often than not say ‘thank you.’ ” Executive coach Chasity Kuttrus was charmed when she met James, who had come to her for guidance as she prepared to retire. She’s a woman wired to embrace the goodness in people with natural followship, Kuttrus said. “Her engagement and her charming nature are what make her special,” said Kut-

trus, who spent nearly a year helping James establish a transition plan and is now a friend. “People are busy, and she has so much on her plate, but she’ll invest time with you, with others who want to be coached (and) mentored. Those kinds of things are what fill her tank up.” Living every bit of the map they laid out together, Kuttrus believes James has found fulfillment. She’s also far from finished. “I think the day you say you’re done, the next day somebody might be putting you in the ground,” James said. “I don’t think we do that. We transition to next.” And Donna James is enjoying the pursuit.

About 40 Columbus-area cancer survivors will headline a feel-good event at Saks Fifth Avenue this fall to raise money and awareness for cancer. Key to the Cure, a charity shopping weekend at the Polaris Fashion Place department store, kicks off Oct. 17 with an evening soiree. At the event, survivors will share how they celebrate their spirit, and then each will honor a personal hero. Guests can expect to be inspired, nibble hors d’oeuvres and (of course) shop. The retail fun continues through Oct. 21, as a portion of every purchase made at Saks during that time will benefit the Heather Pick Spirit Fund of the Columbus Cancer Clinic. The fund, which memorializes late Columbus 10TV anchor Heather Pick, helps locals with cancer-related expenses. Tickets to the Key to the Cure kickoff event cost $75 and are available at Saks Fifth Avenue. A limited-edition Caroline Herrera Key to the Cure T-shirt, shown here, is available at the store starting Oct. 1, and the entire $35 purchase price goes directly to the Heather Pick Spirit Fund. Jimmy Choo pumps also available at Saks for $795. Story by: Kristy Eckert

The Spectacle Twice a year, thousands of the style obsessed—-magazine editors, department store buyers, celebrities and the like—hop on planes around the globe and converge in Manhattan for New York Fashion Week. During a week’s worth of shows, the colorful group previews styles to toast and roast, poses for paparazzi, and parties ‘til the wee hours. They go once in February, when fall and winter clothing collections are showcased, and again in September, when spring and summer collections are shown. New York Fashion Week, which started in 1943, kicks off the world’s four major fashion weeks each season. London, Milan and Paris always follow—-and always in that order.

The Hub Long hosted at Bryant Park, New York’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week tents are now erected at Lincoln Center, just west of Central Park. While shows are held all over Manhattan—-from pristine studios to industrial spaces—-the official lineup of designers show collections here. The venue includes several spaces so multiple shows can happen simultaneously: large runways, small runways and presentations. The freebiefilled lobby serves as a gathering space for thousands—-many who are dressed to impress (or at least vie for attention). Just outside, photographers, bloggers and people-watchers wait patiently to catch celebrities or otherwise eye-catching folk. The Runway Shows Hello, drama! Runway shows are held in theater-type spaces with the catwalk on ground level and seats rising up from there. Guests who score highly coveted tickets wait in line for as long as an hour—-sometimes two—-to enter. Photographers bunch on bleachers at the runway’s end and jockey for space (bring your own stepladder—-or else). Celebrities and socialites are ushered in last (but typically in ample time to attract a rush of paparazzi). Before the show begins, the lights dim to black. The roar dulls. The guests poise their iPhones to snap pictures. Then: Pump, pump, pump, pump—-the music booms, usually just long enough for anticipation to climax. Spotlights flood the runway. And, finally, the models strut out one by one—-heels high, faces fierce—-to oohs and aahs, flashes and click-clickclicks. They walk up and back, showcasing perhaps 30 looks in about 15 minutes. At the end, they walk together in an encore, before the designer emerges to inevitable applause. Above: Sequins and sheer leggings at Rebecca Taylor. The Presentations While not as sexy as runway shows, presentations actually provide a more enticing venue for admiring clothing. Typically reserved for newer designers, presentations are hour-long shows during which models stand stationary as onlookers peruse at their desired pace. Some presentations include models lined up on platforms against walls; others include models on podiums in the room’s center, creating a circular stage. Some presentations include minimalist dÊcor, while others have full-on theatrical-type sets. The rub? It’s not uncommon in presentations for models standing mannequinlike in feet-numbing shoes to pass out. The bonus? The designer usually works the room, hugging admirers, smiling for photos and chatting with guests.

The Darling Nary Manivong, who was once a homeless teen on the east side of Columbus, is now a bona fide darling of New York’s fashion world. He’s generating all sorts of buzz since teaming with Tommy Hilfiger’s daughter, Ally, to create the line NAHM (the NM stand for his initials, the AH for hers). This collection—their third—-is a dramatic evolution from the upscale punk feel of their first. “What we wanted to do is to show everyone that we’re growing,” Manivong says. “This season and this vision is about showing a strong, confident woman.” His own quiet confidence—-and rising stardom—-is apparent during NAHM’s presentation show at Milk Studios. Their room in Milk—-a popular venue in Chelsea that draws a younger, edgier crowd than Lincoln Center—-is jammed, loud, alive. Tommy Hilfiger (and entourage, including a bodyguard twice the size of anyone in the room) arrives, peruses the presentation and sings his praises above the noise of the throng. “They’re really coming into their own,” says the king of prep. “Sometimes it takes a couple seasons, but it’s been a great evolution.” Fashion director at Marie Claire and “Project Runway” judge Nina Garcia shows up, too, and listens intently as the design duo walks her from look to look. Writers hover, photographers snap, bloggers tweet. Yet Manivong—-donning an Ohio State T-shirt as he always does at shows—-smiles widest for his handful of Columbus friends who have come to celebrate this moment. The Sullivan Centre For 25 years, Dr. Christine Sullivan has been a champion for women’s health. It is because of her passion to educate women that the Sullivan Centre is dedicated to breast health. We are going pink to celebrate the strength and courage of those who have breast cancer or have been touched by the cause. All of us at Sullivan Centre are dedicated to early detection and hope for a cure. What is “survivor week” at The Sullivan Centre?

This week long celebration is open to anyone who is a breast cancer survivor. We will be offering a number of specials and discounts on skin care products, Botox and fillers. The week will culminate in an open house luncheon with The Sullivan Centre staff.

What is the most important tip you can give women about breast health?

Even though mammography isn’t perfect, it is the best detection tool we have today. Do a self breast exam once a month except the week before your cycle. Of course, eating a healthy diet always helps in general.

What is the biggest misconception about breast cancer detection?

A normal mammogram is not a guarantee- false negatives do happen. Continue to be vigilant and alert your physician of any changes in your breasts. Just because you don’t have a family history of breast cancer does not mean you won’t be the first to get it. Cancer does not discriminate.

What is Bras for a Cause?

I have over 25 years of experience of talking to women about breasts. I am keenly aware that all of us have gently used bras that we just throw away. Bras for a Cause is a way to channel these to women in need. We encourage everyone to drop off their gently used bras and we will get them to women in need.

How will the bra fitting benefit women?

Dr. Christine Sullivan

It is tremendously difficult to find a properly fitted bra. 80% of women are wearing the wrong size. A poor fit can be uncomfortable and unflattering whereas a proper fit provides comfort and restores confidence. The bra fitting seminar is a private consultation with a fitting specialist who will find the right fit for you.

Meet the Designer

Designing

aDream Meet fashion’s Emily Brady Koplar, designer of the new ladylike line Wai Ming Story by: Kristy Eckert Photos courtesy: Wai Ming

I

f Emily Brady Koplar is a dream catcher, she’s at least a sensible one: She earned her degree in economics from Boston University and then pursued her passion. Koplar went on to study design at Parsons in New York and spent her 20s working for the likes of Ralph Lauren, Vivienne Tam and May Department Stores. Now 32, Koplar is back in her hometown of St. Louis designing her own line, Wai Ming, which launched earlier this year. When she flew to Columbus for a trunk show at Thread on Grandview—the only place in Ohio you’ll find her line—we lunched with her to chat.

A chat with Emily Brady Koplar Capital Style: Why is the line called Wai Ming? Emily Brady Koplar: My mom is Chinese. My dad is mostly Irish. My given name was Emily Wai Ming Brady. My middle name means “Gift of Light,” because I was born on the longest day of the year (June 21). I always really identified with it. CS: How do you describe the line’s look? EBK: Clean but feminine. I try to make sure there’s something special about each piece, whether it’s fabric or a tiny detail. I would say it’s a little bit more refined, but it’s still young. And it’s very versatile—that’s one of my big things. You’ve got to be able to wear it for different occasions. CS: About 20 boutiques across the country are carrying your line, which means the pieces are incredibly exclusive. How many of each piece do you make? EBK: I’ll make between 25

and 60, depending on the piece. CS: How big is your team? EBK: The team is small: It’s me and interns! I work with pattern makers and factories. I have a studio in my home I work from. Thankfully, my husband is very patient, because there are racks of clothes everywhere. CS: What have you learned after debuting your first collection this spring? EBK: Certain things perform really well in one part of the country, and certain things perform really well in another part of the country. (And) there’s got to be something compelling about the garment. In spring, a gray dot fabric was a big hit. Hand tucking was a big hit.

CS: Do you own every piece in your collections? EBK: I have all the samples. So once it goes into production, I wear all the samples.

“The details were the first thing that drew me to her. I think you’re getting a piece that looks like you spent a lot more money than you did.” Miranda Boyle, Thread co-owner

Annie Leibovitz, Plano, Illinois, 2011. © Annie Leibovitz Annie Leibovitz’s “Master Set” and “Pilgrimage” will be on display at the Wexner Center for the Arts through Dec. 30. Learn more at WexArts.org.

It was during a conversation with Annie Leibovitz herself that Wexner Center for the Arts Director Sherri Geldin and the world-famous photographer decided to bring an exclusive exhibition to Columbus. “It occurred to both of us,” Geldin says, “that one body of work that had never been shown together at a public institution is the body of work that she calls the ‘Master Set.’ ” Beginning Sept. 22, the Wex’s entire gallery and lobby spaces will transform into a showcase of both the “Master Set” and a recent series, “Pilgrimage,” highlighting more than 200 of Leibovitz’s iconic images, from Richard Nixon leaving the White House to actress Scarlett Johansson modeling. The exhibition, Geldin hopes, will allow Columbus to experience the moments of history, politics, art and fashion that Leibovitz has captured through her lens for the past 40 years. “Her images are familiar to people from every walk of life,” Geldin says. “It is a moment to really kind of revel in the ways that art and contemporary life come together in a seamless way.”

What’s Old is New (& Fabulous) Long known as an antiques haven, Powell has quietly built itself into Central Ohio’s upscale home decor mecca Story by: Kristy Eckert

A

I

Photos by: Will Shilling

decade ago, Powell was hardly considered a Columbus suburb: It was merely that far, far away place with antique stores that die-hard pickers and your grandma might visit on the occasional weekend. But for the past 10 years, a plethora of young families have populated the fast-growing community with fabulous homes, shiny cars and new energy. Thus, the city’s once-sleepy downtown has awakened—and become a haven for upscale home furnishing stores. It’s also a delightful place to park your car and spend a Saturday strolling. Here’s what not to miss.

home décor Bungalow

In 2010, interior designer friends Paige Langdale and Julie DeVito Butler (right) opened their first Bungalow in the Short North. In 2011, they opened this one at 50 W. Olentangy St. And in 2012, they opened a third in New Albany. Their comfy-luxe furnishings and accessories are mostly new, with a sprinkling of repurposed items (such as a coffee table made of wood reclaimed from a Mt. Vernon barn). So what separates this Bungalow from the others? Deals. While most items here are still full-priced, they do move the sale items from the other stores to this one. So look carefully—and enjoy your score.

As destiny would have it, about the time David decided to retire early from his position as an executive with Abercrombie & Fitch, a Bexley shop that carried Simon Pearce was closing. And an idea was born. The couple secured the line and opened Found (21 W. Olentangy St.), which carries upscale dishware, bedding and anything else you’d need to entertain beautifully. Five years later, David is back with A&F and Jana is constantly keeping things fresh at Found. Among other ways she mixes it up: She features wares by local artists (don’t miss her Anne Ciotola photos—stunning).

You’ll still find antiques here, too. Liberty Antique Mall (18 N. Liberty St.) showcases several vendors who sell everything from knives to carousel horses. The next door Paris Flea Market offers a mix of vintage furnishings and a few new items as well. Ellen Sea Art & Antiques (87 W. Olentangy St.) is jam-packed for the pickin’. And Blackberry Patch Antiques (30 Depot St.) might boast the best vintage jewelry selection in Columbus.

And for dinner, head two miles outside of downtown to chic Italian hot spot Lucé (3499 Market St., shown at left) where you won’t regret a calorie splurge on the cheese plate or Rigatoni Vesuvio. ulie DeVito Butler has always loved the color white and the fresh canvas it creates. In recent years, though, the pristine hue has become an obsession. White paint saturates nearly every room of the interior designer’s New Albany home, providing a serene backdrop for her collection of rustic and modern furniture.“I like the simplicity, and then when you do put something against it, it really pops,” said Julie, who studied photography and co-owns

Julie keeps her monochromatic scheme interesting by mixing neutral shades of creams, taupes and browns with light-reflecting materials such as glass and metal. The subtle palette doesn’t just look pretty: It highlights the home’s unique architecture, which includes lofty ceilings and dramatic

windows.“We’ve hit on a good balance of comfort and openness,” said Michael Butler, Julie’s husband, who works for a venture capital firm. The couple, both Ohio natives who also have lived in Houston and Denver, bought and sold three other New Albany houses before collaborating with Brian Kent Jones Architects and builder Kevin Knight to design their dream home. They moved in on Christmas Eve in 2008. “People think of New Albany houses as being heavy

and traditional, and I don’t think there’s anything heavy or traditional about that house at all,” Knight said. In the past, Julie had decorated each new property with resale in mind. This time, she took a different approach. “I did it for me,” she said. “I did everything I loved.” There are no walls dividing the spacious kitchen, dining and living rooms, giving Julie the freedom to reconfigure her furniture countless ways. “I change things around daily,” she said with a laugh. (Michael jokes that being married to Julie requires a strong back.) But amid all the rearranging, one thing remains untouched: the wall color. “On a beautiful, sunny day, it’s something to be seen,” Michael said. “You almost need sunglasses inside.”

Open House

The main living space resembles a lofted barn, complete with exposed beams and a pair of sliding barn doors that offer a glimpse of the second-floor master bedroom from below. “It’s a very open, multi-purpose kind of space,” Michael said, adding he and Julie have comfortably entertained as many as 70 guests. A wall of windows beyond the dining room table fills the room with natural light and offers relaxing views of a nearby pond. The steel chandelier suspended above the 10-foot-long dining room table was designed by Julie and made by Bernard Electric. This is where Julie and Michael eat most of their meals, along with nephew R.J. DeVito and his wife, who occupy one of the home’s guest rooms. Slipcovered Verellen chairs and a padded wooden bench offer ample seating at the table. The dining room flows seamlessly into the living room, which is a comfy gathering spot. A fireplace framed by stone from the demolished Ohio Penitentiary makes for a unique centerpiece. Julie, who owns an English mastiff named Baby, swears by slipcovers to keep her white furniture looking vivid. “Everything is slipcovered, so everything can be washed,” she said. “That would drive me crazy if I could not wash it.”

“It feels right. I’m always trying to redo or undo as soon as I move into a house. This one, I love it.” Julie DeVito Butler, homeowner

The CAFé

Julie doesn’t cook much, so she admits she focused on making the kitchen look pretty. She chose white marble countertops, Shaker-style cabinets and white floating shelves to display her white dishes. The window behind the range was originally supposed to be a wall, but “I just kept adding more windows,” Julie said. The large center island was built using salvaged wood shutters and rugged beams from an old barn. “I want it to feel warm,” Julie said. “I don’t want it to be sleek. I like clean, but not contemporary.” The adjoining breakfast nook—one of Julie’s favorite spaces—is perfect for sipping coffee and watching the sunrise. September/October 2012 Capital-Style.com

French doors connect the living room to the library, which doubles as a first-floor guest suite. The room has a cozy vibe and includes a fireplace, a couch that converts into a twin bed, and a private adjoining bathroom that was created to be ADA accessible for one of Julie’s family members. (The chocolate-brown bathroom is one of only two rooms in the house that isn’t painted white.) Custom bookshelves hold a collection of signed first editions, from Toni Morrison to John Grisham. A pair of pillows on the couch display the number 44 to represent Julie’s father’s old football number. And, in the corner, a ship’s ladder with a galvanized pipe railing leads to an outdoor balcony with an oversized chess board.

Simple Serenity

Shades of white and cream in varying textures and fabrics give the master bedroom a calming aura. “I wanted it very peaceful,” Julie said. “We don’t have a TV in our room. It’s just serene.” Nightstands made from old balusters flank a Verellen bed draped in crisp white bedding. A sliding barn door makes a novel entrance. An interior window offers a bird’s-eye view of the downstairs living space. And French doors lead to an upper-level balcony.

“Her house is always changing, just like her stores. She’s always rearranging things. Her background is photography, so she has that eye where she looks at things and she’s constantly editing and tweaking.” Kevin Knight, builder

Sweet Surrender

The master bath is a vision in white, too, with accents of glass and metallics. The bath features a white cast-iron bathtub, white heated marble floors and all-white linens. “Everything I look at, I go to white,” Julie said. “That’s what I love.” There was a time when she favored rich colors, florals and plaids, but her style has gradually shifted to neutrals. “My nephew once said to me, ‘Is your favorite color plaid?’ That was just hilarious. Ralph Lauren was a big influence. And now, I like everything simple.” September/October 2012 Capital-Style.com

The Entertainer

Julie and Michael love to entertain, so they designed the home with that purpose in mind. The expansive lower level is where they gather to watch movies or play games, such as ping pong and euchre. “I just wanted this to be the cozy area. Upstairs I wanted it to be beachy, and then this I wanted to be cozy,” Julie said. She chose an ultra-soft carpet for the room because she wanted the texture to feel like sand on bare feet. The room includes several intimate seating areas— “We play a lot of euchre, so there had to be places to play when the family is here,” Julie said—and a large velvety sectional accented with pillows from Bungalow. Plus, this level boasts a workout room where the couple’s many race bibs and medals are displayed. Julie and Michael considered the gym a necessity when building the house. “We usually use it every day,” she said. The lower level also includes a bar and small woodshop where Michael enjoys carving. His one-of-a-kind creations, including the wine stops at left, are displayed throughout the home. September/October 2012 Capital-Style.com

the great ESCAPE

The home offers plenty of outdoor living options, including a giant chess board on the upper deck patio off the library (right) and a garden pavilion (below). “I recall a neighbor saying, ‘These people must have kids, because they’re building a playhouse,’ ” Michael said, referring to the pavilion. He now jokingly calls it Julie’s Playhouse. “We really love to be outside,” Michael said, “and it’s a great area here.”

Builder Kevin Knight’s inspiration for the home’s design came from the Stranahan Mansion in Toledo, near where he grew up. The mansion, a 30,000 square foot estate built in the 1930s by a prominent local businessman, had horse trails and a large carriage barn. That barn provided the vision for Julie and Michael’s home, Knight said.

It’s difficult to merely like horseback riding. If you love it, you live it. And for many, their home décor reflects that passion. Meet three Central Ohio women whose admiration for all things equestrian is stylishly apparent Story by: Kristy Eckert

Laurie Elsass Cheers Black Jack farm Plain City

Equestrian experience: The 48-year-old mother of three rode horses as a child, quit at 15, and started again at 38. Two years ago, she began showing horses competitively in the hunter/jumper disciplines. She typically trains five days a week and competes twice a month. She lives in Dublin but owns this barn in Plain City, where she trains.

This space: Black Jack Farm is a functioning training facility home to 10 horses, including Elsass’s beloved show horse, Captain Jack Sparrow. But Elsass had visions of indoor quarters unlike any she had seen. “Literally,” she says, “I dreamt it up.” So in 2010, she turned a pole barn into an entertaining venue, where she has hosted functions from intimate dinner parties to 500-person corporate events. (Her husband, Rex, owns The Strategy Group for Media, which specializes in political communications.) Interior designer Mark Huffman, of Huffman & Huffman in New Albany, helped give the space the feel Elsass wanted: contemporary. They aimed for “equestrian, but not kitschy,” Huffman says. “Sophisticated. Comfortable.” The 1,500-square-foot space includes a great room, kitchen, dining area, bar and powder room. “I love it,” Elsass says. “It’s my happy place.”

The dining room’s main event—the custom table (right) that comfortably seats 10—was made by Columbus craftsman Chuck Harnack. “He produces the best work in the world,” interior designer Mark Huffman says. “He is an amazing craftsperson.” The adjoining bar boasts sliding stall doors as windows and pewter backsplash tiles and countertops. Since most of the functions here are catered, Huffman worked closely with the Elsass’ caterer to design the kitchen. It includes one giant refrigerator (no freezer), three ovens, two sinks and two dishwashers. It is the only room without brick floors, as the chef preferred hardwood.

They dreamed of creating an equestrian-inspired space that was sophisticated and comfortable. “We wanted it to have a warm and romantic feel,” Elsass said.

Luxe Living

Delicious details abound in the great room (below) which includes four seating areas. Huffman worked with Fortner Upholstery & Fine Furnishings to create a few custom pieces, including the large cowhide coffee-table ottoman in the center of the room. The buffet and mirror were also custom built for the space and glazed by a local artist. Light glows from a variety of sources, including three custom chandeliers, a handful of lamps and several wall sconces. “We wanted it to have a warm and romantic feel,” Elsass says. Huffman topped the look with two Hermes blankets. “Every project needs a little touch of Hermes!” he jokes.

Purebred

Mershad’s living room (left) is the epitome of equestrian style, from the plaid Ralph Lauren sofa and chairs to the four framed prints of English hunt scenes. The silver trophies on the mantle were won in Lake Placid competitions by Mershad’s sons. Mint julep cups are sprinkled throughout the room, as are dog pillows. (Dogs are a horse-show staple, and all three of the Mershad family dogs came from horse shows.)

Modern Twist

“I really wanted to shake this room up and have it not be traditional equestrian décor,” Mershad says of the dining room (below). Mission accomplished: The eclectic room has a contemporary feel while artfully incorporating equestrian details, including plates and cups with horses, Lalique horses on the left side of the mantle and tiny horse-and-fox figurines.

SARA MERSHAD Mershad residence New Albany Equestrian experience: All four of Mershad’s children either have or do compete in the hunter/jumper disciplines and, thanks to them, she caught the bug. (Her first competition was unplanned and essentially on a last-minute dare. “It was the most exhilarating adrenaline rush that I had ever had in my life,” she recalls.) Now, the 46-year-old

travels with her brood around the country—from New York to Virginia to Florida—to compete. “It just becomes your world,” she says. “It just consumes you.” She’s grateful, she says, for the family time it has granted them.

This space: Evidence of Mershad’s equestrian passion populates the entire home, from plaid materials (a very traditional equestrian look) to framed photos of the children competing. Mershad has done most of the decorating herself, with some consulting from home décor boutique Bungalow and interior designer Shauna Lehman. “I loved the plaids. I loved the tweeds. I loved the jackets,” Mershad says. “I loved the horses. There’s nothing more beautiful than a painted portrait of a horse.”

her. “It’s something that takes me completely away from the stress of the day,” she says. But her equestrian endeavors reach beyond riding: Topranked rider Beezie Madden has competed internationally on several of Wexner’s horses, winning several trophies— including two Olympic medals—aboard the famed Authentic.

This space: The Hunt Room, inside the barn (shown here and on the next page), is used for meetings and entertaining. It was recently renovated with the help of Aspen-based interior designer Linda Bedell, who helped decorate Wexner’s Colorado home. The goal? Simple and comfy, but fresh.

Capital-Style.com September/October 2012

The Classic Abigail Wexner has taken her love of horses beyond personal and home style: She also uses it to raise money for a cause about which she is passionate. In 1998, Wexner founded The New Albany Classic Invitational Grand Prix & Family Day to raise money for The Columbus Coalition Against Family Violence, which has since become The Center for Family Safety and Healing. The event, which is celebrating its 15th year, has raised more than $17 million to help families break the cycle of violence. It draws between 15,000 to 20,000 guests to the Wexner residence for musical entertainment (they’ve brought in the likes of The Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato), family-friendly activities and a Grand Prix featuring 30 of the world’s best equestrians. This year’s Classic is Sept 23, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets cost $20 for adults (children 10 and younger are free) and must be purchased in advance at TheNewAlbanyClassic.com. “It started as almost an experiment. I wasn’t sure it would work,” Wexner says. “I’m very proud of the fact we’ve been able to raise over $17 million.”

Highlights of the décor include several prints by noted equestrian artist Sir Alfred Munnings, including the first piece of art Wexner ever purchased (to the right of the cabinet). “I bought this when I was really young and could barely afford anything,” she says. “I still love it.” The mantle trophies were both won by Authentic. The coolers atop the woodwork around the room were all won by Madden, riding a number of Wexner’s horses. 000

hances are you’ve heard of the Biltmore estate, and for good reason. The largest privately owned home in the country is worth the hubbub. Expansive grounds offer breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Fantastic vinos made on site are a great way to wind down. And the home itself will leave you wishing you could have been a party guest in the late 1800s. The estate alone is worth a quick trip—with the girls or a significant other. But what you may not know is its city, Asheville, N.C., has an upand-coming-food scene (with more than 250 locally owned eateries) that will make you want to turn that two-day getaway into a long weekend escape.

The Inn at Biltmore Estate

the biltmore There are a few areas to the Biltmore estate to know: the Biltmore House and grounds; Antler Hill Village, a relatively new development with shops, restaurants and the winery; and lots of trails that connect them together, all perfect to run, bike or see on horseback. Here’s what not to miss. 128

stay The Vanderbilt family’s reputation for being gracious hosts doesn’t fail them at The Inn at Biltmore Estate, the only hotel on the property. With roughly 200 rooms and suites, it’s boutiquish, and allows the staff to cater to whatever you need. Use that extra time to take a walk or sit with coffee on the back terrace. Watching fog clear over the green acres of the property and mountains beyond is a great way to wake up in the morning.

shop and wine bar where, for an extra fee, you can buy and sample some of the premier vinos and sparkling varieties (the latter is definitely worth it). For a fun wine experience, sign up for a wine class, such as Red Wine & Chocolate Tasting. Here, a wine pro pairs four Biltmore wines with four flavored truffles and explains why they go together so well. (It’s a perfect time to pick up tips and tricks for that next wine soirée.)

enjoy Biltmore makes some fabulous wines—-many of which are grown and harvested by hand right on the estate’s 20 acres of vineyards—-so don’t pass up a complimentary wine tasting at the winery. Entering the winery, in production since 1957, you walk through what was the old dairy barn. It now houses the winery, as well as a large wine tasting room, a gift

Biltmore House and the grand dining room

out and about Zipline

The only canopy course in the city, Asheville Zipline Canopy Adventures is just outside of downtown on the Crowne Plaza Resort property (1 Resort Drive). You’ll get a fantastic view of the Asheville skyline from its 52-foot starting tower. The course is a mix of open field and trees where you’ll zip from one white oak-secured platform to the next, keeping the adrenaline level up.

Hike or Drive When a city is located in the middle of a breathtaking national forest, looking for a great place to hike in the area can be overwhelming. So start with the Blue Ridge Parkway, a scenic drive that winds about 469 miles through mountains and meadows, and offers numerous stops for trail walking along the way. For more trail suggestions, visit ExploreAsheville.com.

Touring George Vanderbilt’s grand 175,000-square-foot Biltmore House is a must. Take the audio tour of the home’s interior (it’s quick and full of interesting tidbits). Of the Biltmore’s 250 rooms (there are 43 bathrooms!), you’ll get good highlights—-the grand dining room reminiscent of royal dining halls, bedrooms with the latest technology of the time, plus a dazzling marble spiral staircase that seemingly defies gravity. After the tour, wander the grounds and garden crafted by the architect who designed Central Park. Next to the house, the old stables have been converted into kitschy shops—-an old-fashioned toy store, a chocolate shop, a Christmas boutique and a large gift shop full of Biltmore merchandise, including those from their own lines, Biltmore for Your Home and Biltmore Inspiration. (You can also find décor items at Traditions in Antler Village.) Outside of the house, there are 8,000 acres on the property to explore with great views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. For a leisurely sightsee, take a horseback ride—-a slow-paced, hour-long trail tour (great for the inexperienced rider) where you’ll get a stunning view of the back of Biltmore House. Land Rover Experience Driving School excursions take you to a man-made, wooded course near the Inn. It’s more instructional than adventurous, but fun regardless as a Land Rover rep gives a quick tutorial on the best ways to maneuver, then puts you in the driver’s seat. You can also ride bikes or Segways on paved paths, go on a guided garden walk, fly fish or go clay shooting.

Local food is huge in Asheville, and it’s no different on the Biltmore property, where much of the food is sourced from on-estate and local farms. At the Inn, upscale and formal The Dining Room boasts picturesque windows, an oversize fireplace and attentive table service that makes you feel like your waiter is a personal butler. The food, however pricey, isn’t stuffy, offering farm to table tasting menus, pasta, game meats and great fish options. Check out the brunch buffet here, too. Upstairs, the Library Lounge feels exactly as its name says—-it’s a casual spot, with similar views, to grab lunch or afternoon tea. At Antler Hill Village—-a short bus ride or 10-minute walk away—-try a casual lunch or dinner at Cedric’s Tavern, a good spot for upscale pub fare and atmosphere to suit. They’ve got two of their own brews, along with a few local selections. Also at Antler Village is the slightly more upscale Bistro located next to the winery. It’s a small, familiar menu with options such as fried calamari, wood fired chicken and filet mignon.

Road Trip

asheville In Asheville there is something for everyone: The hipster. The hippie. The foodie. The beer or cocktail aficionado. The outdoorsy type. Or the I-just-wantto-relax-and-takein-the-scenery vacationer. You can do it all here, and in a short amount of time. Downtown Asheville’s easyto-navigate and walkable streets are lined with cool shops, boutiques and bars. If you aren’t sure which way to go, just ask. Locals are friendly and always armed with a great recommendation.

shop While no big designer names may stick out at the handful of boutiques, it’s the perfect spot to stumble across that unique, and probably inexpensive, find (I did at hippie chic dress boutique Virtue at 58 N Lexington Ave.) Wander the Lexington Park District, which is a bit less touristy than the College and Wall Street areas. With its classic, trendy feel, Minx Boutique (64 N. Lexington Ave.) is a must-stop. The uber-tiny Maison Mary (58 Broadway St.) carries limited designs by Yeohlee NY and vintage accessories. There will also be no shortage of art galleries, hippie shops and eclectic boutiques as you wander. For décor inspiration, check out Mobilia (43 Haywood St.), which sells contemporary European furniture and décor items. Next door, Woolworth Walk (25 Haywood St.) boasts two floors of artists’ kiosks. The Battery Park Book Exchange & Champagne Bar (1 Page Ave., No 101) is the coolest used bookstore you’ve ever seen with full wine bar, comfy leather seating and plenty of room to browse.

dine & DRINK In a city that has a touted Foodtopia society, it’s almost guaranteed any restaurant will boast locally-sourced ingredients. Some make farm-to-table their thing, such as downtown’s Table (48 College St.) and The Market Place (20 Wall St.), the latter boasting a coolmeets-rustic vibe and a menu that lets you know exactly what was sourced within 100 miles. A few other popular spots (so much so, we recommend a reservation): the French Bouchon (62 N. Lexington Ave.), the Italian Cucina 24 (24 Wall St.), and Latin-American Sunny Point Café

Boca (68 N. Lexington Ave.). We loved hip Spanish tapas bar Cúrate (11 Biltmore Ave.) where Chef Katie Button crafts some of the most authentic Spanish tapas we’ve eaten outside of Spain. There’s plenty of meatless fare here, too, with the most popular vegetarian spot, Laughing Seed Café (40 Wall St.). Try the Omega Hempnut Burger ($10) with red pepper aioli. If there was ever a restaurant good enough to motivate vacationers to get an early start, Sunny Point Café (626 Haywood Road) in West Asheville (a 5 minute drive from downtown) is it. If there’s a wait, grab a cup of coffee and stroll through Sunny Point’s large backyard garden. Order the Huevos Rancheros ($8.99)—-savory black bean cakes, spicy chorizo, red skins and sunny side eggs topped with roasted tomatillo salsa. Delish and will leave you full all day. Downtown, visit Tupelo Honey Café (12 College St.) for classic southern comforts including a large, heavenly sweet potato pecan pancake ($5.95). Asheville is known for its high concentration of microbreweries. Step into any bar and you’ll find a few on tap. Bow into the Thirsty Monk (92 Patton Ave.)—-both a brewery and beer-slinging joint—-where upstairs it offers American and local crafts, and downstairs it pours Belgian-only beers to a more mature crowd. Irish pub Jack of the Wood (95 Patton Ave.) offers live music and is also home to Green Man Brewing Co. A few others to remember: Lexington Avenue Brewery (39 N. Lexington Ave.), Highland (12 Old Charlotte Highway, Suite H) and Pigsah (150 Eastside Drive). In the mood for a good cocktail? Go to Sazerac (29 Broadway St.)—-they mix both classic and creative in a loungy setting. Try the light and herby Thalia ($8), a refreshing mix of gin, pineapple, basil and bitters.

treat The Gourmet Chip Co. (43 1/2 Broadway St.) offers a dozen kettle-style and sweet potato variations. It’s a fresh-made snack that’ll leave you wanting to skip lunch. Try sweet and salty The Corsica ($4.95) with kettle-style chips, Belgian dark chocolate, apple smoked bacon and black sea salt. The Chocolate Fetish (36 Haywood St.) is known for its truffles. And French Broad Chocolate Lounge (10 S. Lexington Ave.) pairs freshly-made chocolates with a wine bar lounge and beverages to match. Head here for an after-dinner drink and dessert.

The Wow Factor

fashion for freedom Photo by: Tessa berg

Human trafficking—kidnapping and selling girls for sex—is an almost unbelievable epidemic, even in Columbus. This fall, local fur importer Minka’s Furs is hosting a fashion show to help the girls affected. Fashion for Freedom is an event that will showcase fashion-forward furs while raising money for Gracehaven House, a local nonprofit that assists trafficked young women. The furs that walk the runway at Scioto Reserve Country Club on Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. will be on sale after the show (prices start around $100). Half the $65 ticket price, all of the money raised by auctioning five furs, and a quarter of the price of each fur sold at the event will benefit Gracehaven. —Kristy Eckert For more about the cause, visit GracehavenHouse.org. To see a sampling of the furs, like the vest shown here, visit MinkasFurs.com.
