THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH SPRING HOME AND GARDEN SHOW EVENT GUIDE GUIDE

Welcome to the 2022 Columbus Dispatch Spring Home and Garden Show

BY KEVIN CORVO ThisWeek Community News

S

pring sometimes feels distant in the midst of a central Ohio winter, but it will seem closer during the Columbus Dispatch’s annual Spring Home and Garden Show. The 2022 Columbus Dispatch Spring Home and Garden Show presented by Ohio Mulch, and in partnership with Lowe’s, Rite Rug Flooring and Rosati Windows is Feb. 19-27 at the Ohio Expo Center, 717 E. 17th Ave., on the Ohio State Fairgrounds. Events will be held at the Bricker and Celeste buildings. The highlight of the show is, of course, the professionally designed and installed home gardens, said Stephen Buzza, events and sponsorship director, USA Today Network Ventures, Columbus. “The No. 1 reason people come to the show is the gardens,” Buzza said. “You feel spring.” The theme of the show is “Garden Party.” Each garden is built and designed by one of eight landscaping companies and under the purview of the Columbus Landscapers Association, Buzza said. But beautiful gardens are not the only attraction. The eight-day show also features three stages: the Simple Bath/Simple Kitchen Stage, the Lowe’s DIY Stage and the Ohio State University’s Master Gardner Program’s Garden Stage. The Simple Bath/Simple Kitchen Stage will feature cooking demonstrations by chefs from several restaurants, including Thurman’s Café and Schmidts Restaurant, culinary programs of Columbus City Schools and Columbus State Community College, and local celebrity chefs. The culinary demonstrations are a new addition. For a schedule of stage entertainment, visit dispatchshows.com. Patrons also will have the chance to learn about a variety of home-improvement opportunities.

More than 350 vendors will be at the show, Buzza said. Information about professional services including window installation, painting, fencing, roofing and concrete work will be available. The show also offers a unique opportunity for homeowners. “You can meet the experts in person and look them right in the eyeballs,” Buzza said. In addition, representatives of the Better Business Bureau will be at the show to assist consumers who want to do additional vetting of businesses represented at the show, Buzza said. Admission is $8 in advance at dispatchshows.com or $10 at the door. The show is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, except Feb. 22 when the show is closed and Feb. 20 and 27, when the show closes at 6 p.m. Military, first responders and healthcare employees are admitted free, and those 17 and younger also are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Teachers and educators are admitted free on Presidents’ Day, Feb. 21. Children’s book author Eric Litwin, author of the “Pete the Cat” series will be at the show Feb. 21. Feb. 23 is senior day, patrons 65 years and over is admitted for $5. Feb. 27 is Family Day, and several animals from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium will be shown as well as several exhibits from the Center of Science and Industry (COSI). Masks are encouraged but not mandatory as the Ohio Expo Center falls under the guidelines of the state of Ohio and not the city of Columbus, Buzza said. “We’ve been planning for the show and look forward to the excitement it brings each year,” Buzza said.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH SPRING HOME AND GARDEN SHOW EVENT GUIDE GUIDE

Garden Party exhibits will bring burst of spring

BY SCOTT HENNEN ThisWeekNews.com

With ice, snow and chilly temperatures outside, few things are more welcome in February than the sight of blooming flowers. No, that would not be a mirage, but the Garden Party exhibits in the 2022 Columbus Dispatch Spring Home & Garden Show, held Feb. 19-27 at the Ohio State Fairgrounds. Eight companies will have displays, but getting those beautiful blooms isn’t just a matter of lugging plants from the back of moving vans. It’s a process that involves playing a little trick on Mother Nature. This sleight of hand in the horticultural world is known as “forced-blooming.” The majority of the bulbs that are forcedbloomed for the show were done by Riepenhoff Landscape Limited and Seely’s Landscape Nursery. “We’re in the process of moving plants into a heated poly-hut or greenhouse on our property,” said Nick Besser, a landscape ar-

chitect at Riepenhoff, in late January. “The thing with the heated greenhouse is to get the plants to think that it’s spring, or basically it’s one or two months later than it is. “Timing is one of the most important things. You don’t want to move the blooms (into the greenhouse) too quickly or they would be spent before the show.” With the exhibits having a “Garden Party” theme, Riepenhoff’s display will channel “Blues, Brews and Barbecues.” The backyard setting will have the feeling of a get-together with family and friends, much like was the norm before March 2020. Seely’s display will feature an evening wine party dubbed “Wine Soiree in Tuscany.” It will be a vineyard with a Tuscany theme with entwining grapevines and an array of colorful flowers to get visitors in the mood to pop a cork (or twist off a cap) in the backyard. “Different plants bloom at different times of the year so you have to bring in plants (to the greenhouse) at different times,” said Roger Seely Jr., landscape designer and nursery manager at Seely’s.

“Rhododendrons bloom in mid-summer so we had to bring those (into the greenhouse) in mid-December. Forsythias come in later. “Our company has done forcing for our own (exhibits) for the last 30 years. We know when to bring (the bulbs) in. I have been designing them for 20 years, and my dad (Roger Seely Sr.) did it before that.” Wood Landscape Services of Columbus will have the theme of “Family Game Night.” The display will include bocce ball courts, cornhole boards, Connect Four tiles in garden lattices and even a hopscotch court made of bluestone or another natural stone. Jacob Wood, vice president of sales for Wood Landscape Services, said the company was dabbling in their own form of alchemy by force-blooming bulbs for the first time. “We built our own greenhouse, and we’re working to force our own flowers,” he said. “We’re keeping it kind of simple, but things are going well. Things are starting to flush out for us.” Delagrange Landscaping, which is in Knox County between Apple Valley and Mount Vernon, will feature an exhibit called “Family Movie Night,” creating a kind of an outdoor area where people can sit, relax and watch a movie, according to Jason Bornhorst, vice president of design and sales. “This is our first time we have done a garden for (the show), so this is a new experience for us,” Bornhorst said. “It’s great exposure for the company, and it’s an opportunity for the company to show what it can do. “One thing we’re proud of is that we’re located in Knox County, and we do a lot of nice work on the lake in Apple Valley. It shows that you don’t have to be one of the big companies in Columbus to have the ability to do nice work.”

OTHER BUSINESSES HAVING DISPLAYS ARE: •Landscape Design Solutions: “Whiskey Tasting: Everything Is Better With Age” is the theme in a setting of whiskey barrels and a shed-style bar. It will have a rustic, aged look just like whiskey and bourbon. A whiskey-barrel water feature also will be on display. Azaleas and rhododendrons will be included in the foliage as well as spruce to give the exhibit a backyard, woody feel. •Oakland Nursery: “Wedding Garden” will have a green-and-white theme with such plants as azaleas, garden hemlock, flowering crabapple and boxwood. It also will include symmetrical water fountains and overhead canopies. •Peabody Landscaping: “Dinner Party” will feature a table made of a hollowedout log with a glass covering. It also will feature natural elements such as crabapples and serviceberry along with a pergola. •Ryan’s Landscaping: “Backyard Tailgate” will have the ambience of having family and neighbors over to watch the game. It will feature a variety of flowering shrubs along with azaleas, hyacinths, Lenten roses and tulips among other blooms.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH SPRING HOME AND GARDEN SHOW EVENT GUIDE GUIDE

RiteRug offers full stock of flooring options BY SCOTT GERFEN Dispatch Media Group

The COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic has put homeowners in a specific mood, if you ask Larry Noel, president of retail sales for RiteRug Flooring. The Whitehall-based company guides customers through a line of flooring products, ranging from carpeting and hardwood to laminate, luxury vinyl floors and tile. With people spending more time at home, they’ve been spending a lot of money and effort customizing their living spaces, Noel said. “People are tired of the house, quite honestly,” he said. “They’ve been looking at it the past couple of years and they’re really wanting to do some upgrades.” Visitors to RiteRug’s home-show exhibit at the Columbus Dispatch Home & Garden Show can explore many options to improve their living space, including the hottest products on the market in

high-end carpet patterns, luxury vinyl and wood flooring. The show, presented by Ohio Mulch, runs Feb. 19-27 at the Ohio Expo Center, 717 E. 17th Ave. Vinyl flooring is known as a resilient, low-maintenance option. But today’s technology allows luxury vinyl flooring to be manufactured with extreme depth and realism, closely resembling the beauty of hardwood, tile and stone, Noel said. “It really is the craze of the industry,” he said. “It used to be that people would put it into the kitchen or maybe a great room. Now they’re putting it in the entire home because people truly are ‘living’ in their homes - they’re using every room in the house.”

With high-end carpeting, customers are focused on “more design, more color and more flair,” Noel added. “We have things that are durable and breathtaking. A lot of customers are doing staircases right now.” RiteRug, with more than 46 locations, prides itself on having the largest selection of in-stock flooring products in the United States, Noel said. Competitors and others, he said, have been coping with the challenges of getting materials for customers. “If you’ve gone shopping lately, you’ve noticed places out of things or they’ve given you a delivery date of three or four months,” Noel said. “We have product when the customer wants it.

We’ve invested in the customers and invested in a massive way, and we’re the only ones doing it.” RiteRug employees avoid “selling the customer on ‘just what we’ve got,’” Noel said. “It’s not just in flooring, it’s in everything. They’re forcing your hand to settle. We don’t want you to do that.” RiteRug has a long history in central Ohio. Brothers Duke and Stanley Goldberg founded the company more than 80 years ago; it’s now the largest independent flooring business in the nation, Noel said. The company’s 500,000-squarefoot headquarters, distribution center, wholesale and outlet showroom is located in Whitehall. Noel said RiteRug remains focused on creating a customer experience that not only provides the best value but also convenience. “We pride ourselves on saving the customer money,” he said.

New windows can enhance energy efficiency, curb appeal BY CHRIS BOURNEA ThisWeek Community News

With spring around the corner, many homeowners may be considering installing new windows. A variety of factors lead homeowners to decide that the time has come for a change, said Mike Rosati, owner and chief executive officer of Columbusbased Rosati Windows. The age and condition of windows often is the primary reason for replacement, he said. “A lot of times they’re old and beat up,” he said. “A lot of times they don’t operate properly.” Spring is a popular time for window replacement because homeowners are prompted by winter heating bills that could be lowered with new windows, Rosati said. “A lot of times it’s efficiency - fuel bills go up,” he said. “Some people sit near a window, and they have ice on the back of their neck.”

The combination of drafty windows and high energy costs spur some homeowners to replace windows before spring. When installing windows in winter, extra care must be taken to keep the house warm throughout the process, Rosati said. “We do one window at a time in the winter,” he said. “We shut doors to keep cold air from circulating.” Rosati accumulated extensive knowledge of windows and their effect on a

home’s energy efficiency and value through his work in the construction industry over the past few decades. After learning about business while working in the family grocery store growing up, he ventured into construction at age 19. He eventually joined a central Ohio window dealer and worked his way up to general manager. In 2000, he founded Rosati Windows. Over the past 22 years, the company has expanded from a startup to a multimil-

lion-dollar operation with a 56,000 square-foot showroom and factory at 4200 Roberts Road. Rosati said his years of experience have proven that when replacing old windows, it’s important to stay as faithful as possible to the home’s original architecture. Doing so ensures that the new windows look like they “fit” and enhance the home’s curb appeal. “You have to look at sizes. There are minimum and maximums for openings. You look at the architecture. You kind of look at how things were built,” he said. “It’s a process that the sales rep and the customer go through.” Staying true to the home’s original architecture also helps customers narrow down the choices for replacement windows, Rosati said. “If it’s a custom-made window, it’s going to fit the opening,” he said. “It’s not as open as some people think.”

BOOTH 505 5 Bath Remodeling Trends to

Love in 2022 Dreaming of a bath remodel? These top trends are sure to last.

Every year, the Columbus Home & Garden Show reminds us that the best way to put an end to a cold Central Ohio winter is to plan a spring home refresh! To start the design wheels turning on what your dream bathroom could look like, here are six trends our design consultants have been noticing among homes in our area. Whether you’re updating for style, functionality, or safety, consider including these trends in your next bathroom refresh.

Goodbye, Garden Tub!

Kick Out the Grout

One of our most popular bathroom remodeling requests is to remove bulky, dated garden tubs and replace them with functional, stylish walk-in showers. Tub-to-shower conversions let you customize your bathing experience by adding bench seating, storage shelves, hand-held showerheads, and more!

Many homeowners are opting for grout-free bathroom upgrades. Instead of tiled tub and shower spaces, grout-free acrylic offers the look of tile without the pitfalls. Because it’s porous, tile allows water to seep in and harbor mold and mildew. Staining is also an issue with grouted tub and shower walls, detracting from the stylish look you were hoping for. With a scrub-free finish, acrylic shower solutions give your bathroom a beautiful, durable, low-maintenance finish.

Colors to Suit Your Style Selecting the right combination of finishes can be both fun and challenging as you redesign your bathroom. From shower surrounds and faucets, to cabinetry and lighting, you have lots of style options! At Improveit, our design consultants will share samples of many materials right in your own home so you can mix and match for your perfect combination. Still stuck? Visit our blog to find bath design palettes you can use or customize for your space!

See the Light Researchers at Houzz recently reported that almost 4 in 10 homeowners were unhappy with their bathroom lighting. If you’re among them, be sure to include new light fixtures in your bath remodel. Single-light sconces and 2-, 3-, and 4-light fixtures are available in multiple finishes to complement your décor. Looking for more natural light? Partner with a company like Improveit that can install new windows in your bathroom (even inside the shower!) to really upgrade your space.

Close the Curtain, Open the Door When you’ve put so much thought into the style of your updated bathroom, don’t stop without adding a shower door! Columbus homeowners tell us that a walk-in shower with a simple curtain takes away from the overall design. Instead, opt for a sliding or swing-out shower door to finish your bathing space in style. Choose from finishes like brushed nickel, matte black, and more to match your other fixtures, and textured glass options for privacy. Whether you’re ready to ditch outdated finishes, struggling with tile and grout that won’t come clean, or need to update your bathroom for safety and functionality, Improveit can help! Visit our team in booth 505, or call us at 614-618-3224 for a free consultation on your bath design needs. We can’t wait to bring your dream bathroom to life!

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH SPRING HOME AND GARDEN SHOW EVENT GUIDE GUIDE

Ohio Mulch to offer showgoers info and deals BY JIM FISCHER ThisWeek Community News

For 39 years, Ohio Mulch has been participating in shows such as the 2022 Spring Dispatch Home & Garden Show, and patrons seek two things, according to Ron Frost, director of sales for Ohio Mulch. Information and deals. Every year, Ohio Mulch offers deals available only to show attendees, Frost said, so if you want to find out about potential savings on products and services, you’ll have to visit during the show, which is Feb. 19-27 at the Ohio Expo Center, 717 E. 17th Ave. For information on how Ohio Mulch can help with your landscaping needs, you’ll want to do the same. But Frost also pointed out that his team is ready

with plenty of information, sometimes more than many customers realize. “The busy season for us is March through Memorial Day,” Frost said. “Most homeowners are starting to think about mulching around the end of March, beginning of April. Spring is a time when most people are looking for that nice, clean look. But there are other times throughout the year it’s appropriate to mulch, as well.” For example, he said, the best time to add new trees and shrubs depends on the

type of plant and your soil. Many new plants do better in the fall, provided they are properly dug and mulched, Frost said. Proper depth for planting varies, as does the application of mulch both on top and mixed with the soil. For example, balled trees can be planted less deep to avoid winter underground freezes. These also should receive a generous rounded pile of mulch at the base to provide needed warmth above ground. Additionally, different types of mulch

can be used to blend with soil to provide necessary nutrients, especially in landscapes that are primarily clay-based. Ohio Mulch also makes products that are a blend of materials for this purpose. Ohio Mulch also offers other landscaping materials, including gravel, stones and marble. The company also has a design team available to help with ideas and execution. Frost said his team is looking forward to engaging with customers and potential customers at this year’s show. “It’s a chance for vendors to meet customers who might not seek them out directly for a project in a web search, and for customers, there’s an opportunity to maybe talk to three or four companies for their project all in one space and time,” Frost said.

Dave Fox Design celebrates 30 years of quality remodeling BY KEVIN CORVO ThisWeek Community News

Homeowners considering a remodeling project can get a good start with help from a central Ohio company celebrating its 30th anniversary. Dave Fox Design Build Remodelers, 3505 West Dublin-Granville Road, designs home additions and remodels kitchens and bathrooms and other projects that require design and installation. Staff from the company will be on hand at the 2022 Columbus Dispatch Home & Garden Show on Feb. 19-27 at the Ohio Expo Center, 717 E. 17th Ave. While the project design and installation services the company provides range from small to large, it does not perform simpler projects such as only installing drywall in a basement, said Steve Dempsey, director of sales for Dave Fox Design Build Remodelers. “We are not a ‘handyman’ service (but) offer a full range of design and remodeling services for projects big and small.” Their presence at the show “is a great way to meet the public in a laid-back environment and talk to homeowners faceto-face about what we can to together,”

Dempsey said. Founded in 1982 by its namesake who retired in 2005, the employee-owned company designs and remodels single-family residences. It does not perform commercial work, Dempsey said. The company also limits its projects to the central Ohio market, Dempsey said. Whatever a homeowner might imagine becomes more than a drawing through the use of virtual-reality imaging that make ideas come to life, Dempsey said. Potential customers visiting the show

or the company’s studio will have the opportunity to work with staff and create the design they desire for their home, Dempsey said. Dave Fox Design Build Remodelers is 100% employee-owned since 2003. It has grown since the onset of the pandemic, adding about 25 employees since the first quarter of 2020. Today, the company has 85 employees. “We flourished (during the pandemic),” Dempsey said. “During the pandemic, people were, of course, home a lot. (Both spouses or partners) were home, too, so

there was suddenly more opportunity for both of them to be there to discuss projects,” Dempsey said. Dave Fox Design Build Remodelers relocated in 2015 to its current office and studios on West Dublin-Granville Road which features more than 25 displays showcasing the latest home-remodeling trends. “Dave Fox is an employee-owned company, and the culture here is a direct reflection of that. We are a close-knit group of talented and passionate individuals working together to improve the quality of life for our employees, clients and the community,” said Jamie Bratslavsky, the company’s director of marketing. THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH SPRING HOME AND GARDEN SHOW EVENT GUIDE GUIDE

Plan to have your best garden ever this year

Photos courtesy OSU Extension BY MIKE HOGAN OSU Extension

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Time to drool over colorful photos of mouth-watering vegetables and flowers in a variety of stunning colors in seed catalogs and on seed company websites. Its time to order seeds for your vegetable or flower garden for this growing season. By now, your mailbox or email inbox has likely seen an influx of colorful seed catalogs and email messages with links to the latest and greatest varieties of vegetables, annual flowers, and herbaceous perennial plants. HAVE A PLAN Before you get started on your seed order it is sometimes helpful to review the successes and challenges you experienced in the garden last season. Ideally, you have a garden journal or written notes with information about which varieties of peas your family liked best last spring or the name of the cultivar of those dwarf sunflowers which set your garden ablaze with color last August. If you don’t have written notes and you don’t trust your memory, look for order forms or packing slips from last year’s seed order when attempting to identify that most-loved cultivar.

When you think about your vegetable or flower garden from last season, identify objectives for what you hope to achieve in the garden this year. If you battled foliar or wilt diseases last year, look for cultivars with resistance to specific diseases. While using disease resistant cultivars won’t necessarily eliminate the incidence of plant diseases, it greatly reduces the potential for widespread damage from many disease organisms. SO MANY CULTIVARS When evaluating potential cultivars in seed catalogs and on websites its easy to get excited about specific cultivars simply based on photos, but be sure to carefully review the characteristics of specific cultivars before making a decision about which ones to select this year. Make sure that the characteristics of cultivars you

select match your needs and the objectives you have for that specific crop in your garden. Consider choosing more than one cultivar to extend the growing season or the period of harvest for specific crops since the days to harvest can differ greatly for different cultivars of the same crop. USING LEFTOVERS Many times gardeners get excited when planning the garden and ordering seeds and end up with unused seeds at the end of the growing season. While most seeds are viable for a few years if they are stored in a cool, dry location, germination rates are typically reduced when using seeds from the previous season. Germination rates for seeds more than a year or two old tend to greatly decrease, especially for crops such as corn and peppers, so refrain from ordering more seeds than you can use in one season. When using seeds from the previous season, plan to increase the seeding rate to compensate for reduced germination rates. Continued on page 20

MARK YOUR CALENDAR Once your seeds arrive, be sure to keep them in a cool, dark, dry location until you are ready to plant them. The produce drawer in the refrigerator can be a perfect place to store seeds, especially those saved from one year to the next. If you plan to start some seeds indoors this winter, get out the calendar and read the seed packets to determine when to start sowing seeds indoors. For many gardeners this truly is the most wonderful time of the year. Time for The Dispatch Home and Garden Show and the time when we dream about and plan for having our best garden ever this season.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH SPRING HOME AND GARDEN SHOW EVENT GUIDE GUIDE

Area gardeners encouraged to participate in 2022 Backyard Garden Awards

BY KEVIN CORVO ThisWeek Community News

F

ive years after the inaugural event, the Backyard Garden Awards, presented at the 2022 Columbus Dispatch Fall Home and Garden Show, has grown in participation and public popularity. “We hope to see the number of entries increase this year,” said Mark Reiner, vice president of Oakland Nurseries, the presenting sponsor of the Backyard Garden Awards. Green-thumb gardeners who want to prove they have the best backyard skills can begin proving it June 24. The Backyard Garden Awards was first held in 2018 after discussions between Mike Hogan, coordinator of the master gardener program at Ohio State University and organizers of the home and garden show, held each spring and fall at the Ohio Expo Center, 717 E. 17th Ave. on the Ohio State Fairgrounds. More than 400 people entered the contest in 2020, a benefit of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic that allowed some people the time to grow a contest-worthy garden. But the number of entries dropped to fewer than 300 last year. “I think it was because the world opened up a little,” but we hope to rebound this year and have more entries, said Arica Leonard, event operations manager for the Columbus Dispatch Home and Gardens Show. For 2022, a Winners’ Awards Ceremony will be held in-person at the Fall Home & Garden Show on September 10. About 20 volunteer master gardeners who have completed the program at the OSU Extension are judges for the contest. The program is part of the university’s College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences within the OSU Extension, an outreach by OSU to provide educational

opportunities to the public. “It’s a way to give back to the community,” in this instance by providing collegelevel agricultural and horticultural lessons in soil, compost, climate, and how to grows plants and vegetables to those who enroll in the classes, Hogan said. Gardeners interested in entering the contest can submit photos of their backyard gardens and landscaping online starting June 24 at dispatchbackyardgardenawards.com, Leonard said. Online submissions will be accepted until July 29. People’s Choice voting begins August 8 and closes August 22. In August, teams of judges will visit each backyard and winners are invited to the Columbus Dispatch Fall Home & Garden Show to accept awards, prizes from Oakland Nurseries, and provide profiles for a feature in the Dispatch’s “At Home” section. Organizers of the Backyard Gardens Awards encourage people to enter the contest and share the beauty of their efforts to more than acquaintances or on social media. “The Backyard Garden Awards allows gardeners the opportunity to share their gardens with all of central Ohio, where they usually only get the chance to share with family, friends and neighbors,” Leonard said. The Backyard Garden Awards also is a way for gardeners to be recognized for the work that goes into growing a beautiful garden, Leonard said. “It’s great that we can give gardeners the platform to show off their spectacular work that they spend so much valuable time working on.”
