“This is a key time of year to prepare your house and lawn for spring projects, from home renovations to landscaping improvements,” said Weston Davis, events marketing manager for GateHouse Live Events & Promotions, which produces the show.

“Because the Dispatch Home & Garden Show is the largest in the area, it’s the best place to find inspiration. This is your chance to find everything you need to tackle your wishlist projects, all in one setting.”

From Feb. 22 to March 1 (excluding Feb. 25, when it’s closed), more than 350 vendors will join home and garden experts, celebrities, demonstrations and more at the Celeste and Bricker buildings at the Ohio Expo Center, 717 E. 17th Ave. The eight-day show will have guests counting down the seconds until spring arrives. This year’s top draws include:

Celebrity Appearances The Simple Bath Simple Kitchen Home Stage will host a number of local and national celebrities.

Appearing Feb. 22 are Nicole Curtis, host of “Rehab Addict” on HGTV and DIY Network; and “Dr. Lori’s Antiques Appraisal Comedy Show,” in which guests may bring items of potential value for Dr. Lori to assess.

On Feb. 23, Mark Bowe of DIY Network’s “Barnwood Builders” takes the stage, as does author and former White House chief floral designer Laura Dowling.

Brother and sister duo Leanne and Steve Ford of HGTV’s “Restored by the Fords” will appear Feb. 29.

Wrapping things up March 1 is Columbus’ own Jack Hanna, director emeritus of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

Gardens on the Wild Side

Speaking of the zoo, the show’s signature indoor gardens will take a walk on the wild side this year in the Celeste Building.

Thanks to a partnership with the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, supported by AEP Ohio and Fifth Third Bank, each of the landscapers was

paired with a region of the zoo — and a matching animal topiary — to inspire its designers.

These wild topiaries include a lion, gorilla, rhinoceros, sea lion, kangaroo, manatee and more.

Special zoo appearances from animal ambassadors and weekend stage shows with the critters are scheduled throughout the week as well.

More Fun to Enjoy AEP Ohio’s Energy Efficiency Programs will present the Adirondack Fishing Lodge, designed

by WSA Architecture and Design Studio and built entirely from reclaimed barn wood by the Mount Vernon Barn Co. Accompanying landscaping, provided by Vaughanscapes, includes a small pond and a walking path featuring themes of conservation and sustainability in partnership with the zoo and The Wilds.

The third annual Backyard Garden Award presented by Oakland Nurseries kicks off at the show.

Central Ohio gardeners are encouraged to enter their backyards starting July 1. Entries will be judged in six categories in August, and winners will be announced at the fall Dispatch Home & Garden Show in September.

Prizes include gift cards to Oakland Nurseries and a spotlight in The Columbus Dispatch.

The AgPro Garden Stage will feature information sessions led by gardening experts throughout the week. A highlight will include a living edible garden grown and installed by master gardeners from Ohio State University; they will be on hand all week to answer guests’ toughest gardening questions.

Monday through Friday, an industry hiring event will give those interested in skilled trades the opportunity to talk to companies that are hiring right now in such fields as carpentry, plumbing, construction, home and garden design, landscape construction and more.

Those attending this year’s Columbus Dispatch Home & Garden Show, presented

by Ohio Mulch, could be in for a wild ride.

That’s because this year’s gardens will celebrate the widely contrasting regions of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

Each of 10 landscapers has based a garden on a specific region in the zoo, with an animal topiary as the centerpiece.

While the zoo has taken part in the home and garden show before, bringing director emeritus Jack Hanna along with animals and character ambassadors, this year represents the largest-scale collaboration to date, said Pete Fingerhut, vice president of marketing and sales for the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and properties.

The timing wasn’t an accident.

Zoo officials thought there was no better time to participate in the show, Fingerhut said, with the advent of the newest zoo region, Adventure Cove, set to open Memorial Day Weekend.

Adventure Cove, a $40 million-plus investment, will feature sea lions among 70 other animal species, Fingerhut said. It is the first large-scale region at the zoo since the Heart of Africa opened in 2014. Adventure Cove will feature both indoor and outdoor sections, Fingerhut said.

The new region, as well as the others found at the zoo, will serve as the inspiration for the home and garden show’s annual garden displays. Even the signs, Fingerhut said, will mimic the wayfinding arrows found at the zoo.

“When you go there, we want it to look

like you’re entering the Columbus Zoo,” he said.

Gardens will be based on Asia Quest, Australia & the Islands, the Congo Expedition and African Forest, Adventure Cove, the Wilds, the Heart of Africa, North America, Safari Golf Club, the Shores and Aquarium and Polar Frontier. Each region will be separate, accessible via walkways.

To prepare, the landscapers creating the gardens held several meetings with the zoo, Fingerhut said, walking around their regions and taking photos in order to get a feel for the area. Preparation for the gardens began in late summer.

“It will be kind of neat to see what they develop,” he said.

The zoo’s influence on the Home & Garden Show won’t just be evident in the gardens.

On each day of the event, the zoo will bring costumed characters, as well as ambassadors who will have animals with them, Fingerhut said. On the last day, Hanna himself will perform with the animals, he said.

Children also will have the opportunity to play games for a chance to win a prize.

“We’re just going to have a lot of fun with this,” Fingerhut said.

The venue also will feature a fishing lodge in partnership with AEP Ohio that people will be able to walk through to learn about energy efficiency, Fingerhut said. Visitors will be able to learn about which plants attract wildlife and which ones deter animals.

Asia Quest Landscape Design Solutions designed and built its garden to honor the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium’s Asia Quest.

The space can be seen as a kickoff to spring, with tropical plants such as palms lending the garden a Southeast Asian feel.

The garden features thousands of flowers for visitors to enjoy. A large water feature mimicking a jungle stream meanders through the garden.

A large Asian elephant topiary covered in moss is part of the landscape; the pachyderm can be found near the stream, perhaps ready for a drink. At 5 feet tall, he serves as the central fixture of the garden.

Different types of tropical plants add a jungle-like feel to the garden; they are planted alongside azaleas and rhododendrons. Dawn redwoods flush with new foliage. Ferns and spring bulbs such as tulips and hyacinths provide additional color and textures.

Known for their fragrance, the hyacinths will cater to visitors’ sense of smell.

The garden will have various spots for sightseers to stop and take it all in. At the heart of the garden sits a roofed cedar patio accessed by two diverging pathways. Those resting there can see the water feature to the right, as well as panoramic views of the entire garden. Adjacent to the covered patio is an outdoor kitchen where visitors can sit and enjoy the garden’s sights, sounds and smells.

As they leave the garden, visitors pass under one of two cedar arbors covered in vines and ferns.

Five Seasons Landscape management has created its very own version of Australia and the Islands.

Though the animals of Australia and the United States are different, their plant life is similar — except the seasons are opposite.

Entering the garden, visitors first will see a life-size topiary of a kangaroo, constructed of moss and plants. At almost 6 feet tall, it will serve as a silent host to usher in guests.

The rustic wood structure is reminiscent of Bob and Evelyn’s Roadhouse building, where the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium houses its nocturnal animals. The structure features walls on two sides and is open on the other two sides. The interior boasts 1950’s lawn furniture.

A working wood-burning fireplace with a pizza oven anchors the garden. In addition to providing warmth, it’s also a great way to cook meals outdoors.

A paver path and patio complement the natural-rock water feature that is surrounded by evergreen trees such as fir, pine and hemlock. The water feature adds soothing sounds to the experience.

Large shade trees such as birch, ginkgo, sycamore and cherry add height and give the garden a beautiful green ceiling. Flowering shrubs from azalea and aronia to roses and rhododendron provide the scent of spring in the air. Annuals and perennials fill the garden with colors of silver, white, red and yellow to complete the spring color palette.

Hedge Landscape LLC challenges the traditional garden aesthetic by approaching the garden as art while promoting sustainability in order to create unique, timeless landscapes.

The Columbus Zoo’s Safari Golf Club was the inspiration for this garden. Using a modern garden aesthetic, landscapers created an inviting space for both wildlife and people.

The curvilinear retaining walls represent the forms and shapes seen on the fairways.

Landforms create the impression of walking among the hills and valleys of the course.

The garden emphasizes the transition from manicured lawn to natural landscape.

Hedge believes each landscape can make a positive impact on the environment.

Using native plants and incorporating a water feature provides food, shelter and water for wildlife.

Since 2013, nearly six acres of the zoo’s golf course have been made “native areas” by removing invasive, nonnative vegetation and planting native species.

The Safari Golf Club holds the title of a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.

Hundreds of Eastern bluebirds and purple martins have fledged from the course since 2008. Hedge celebrates this by displaying nest boxes for these birds in its own garden.

Visitors can stop by Hedge’s garden sanctuary to prepare themselves for spring. Folks can stop by the outdoor bar with its concrete countertop to enjoy a cocktail or two and the sounds of water while breathing in the fragrant scent of crabapple blossoms — or guests can just sit down and enjoy the display of color provided by azaleas, rhododendrons and tulips.

Visitors will feel welcomed to the jungle as they approach the rustic wooden arbors that draw them into Oakland Nurseries’ Congo Retreat, inspired by the Columbus Zoo’s Congo Expedition and African Forest.

Two willow trees will serve as stewards to usher visitors into the garden, providing a rich canopy overhead. Those strolling into Oakland’s garden will find large hemlocks and azaleas that add color and texture to the garden.

Greenery isn’t limited to trees. Lush, tropical plants such as ferns, figs and palms accent the center of the garden, reminiscent of an African landscape. Visitors also will notice the rush and tumble of a stone waterfall. Pots and baskets will make for interesting elements to enhance guests’ exploration of this African paradise.

Travelers can find some respite from the wild, though. Visitors are invited to rest their feet inside the garden’s grass-thatched cabana while listening to the rush of the waterfall. Interesting rock outcroppings show throughout the garden, adding color and texture.

Tourists should look out, though, for the gorilla hiding underneath the willows. (Wise ones will remember to bring some bananas.) The gorilla topiary is about 4 feet high, covered in moss and ferns with some small splashes of color from flowers.

“Oh!” “Look, how cute!”

“Aren’t they beautiful?”

These phrases often are heard when people see North American white-tailed deer in the animals’ native woodland habitat.

When the gentle creatures are spotted in backyards, however, the phrases might change a bit: “Let the dog out!”

“Those darn deer are eating the hostas again!”

Deer are beautiful, but they can be destructive to homeowners’ landscapes. The key to living together peacefully is to make landscapes less desirable to deer.

The first part of Riepenhoff ’s garden can be considered a “deer cafe.” The landscape used to be beautiful, but it has since been eaten by our cute friends. Hostas, taxus and other tasty deer favorites have been eaten to the nubs. They’ll return next year — just in time to be nibbled to the nub again.

Further in, visitors will find a garden that is equally beautiful, but full of plants that Bambi finds far less palatable. Ferns, Siberian bugloss and sweet woodruff are among perennials that deer simply don’t like. Boxwoods have replaced the taxus as the go-to evergreen, and other gorgeous — but yucky — flowering shrubs complete the garden selections.

Even the water feature is less deer-friendly. It’s a pondless system that flows into an underground reservoir instead of an above-ground drinking bowl, providing all the pleasant sounds of a traditional water feature without being an attractive venue for deer.

The Shores of a Garden combines the dock-like feel of the Columbus Zoo’s manatee exhibit with the coral reefs of its aquarium. The team from Ryan’s HORES & Landscaping has brought these exhibits to life with one A Q U A R I U M unique design.

The challenge was an uncommon one. Landscapers were tasked with making a garden out of an environment in which one might find snorkelers or boaters. But a coral reef is just an underwater garden of sorts, with many of the basic elements of landscape design already present. Visitors will find the structures of this garden closely represent the dock side of the manatee exhibit, while the natural stone chosen is a great complement to the coral reef.

As visitors enter the Shores of a Garden, they will find plant material native to Zone 6, of which central Ohio is a part. But landscapers also have incorporated palms and other tropical flora that will transport visitors, at least in their minds, right to southern Florida.

That’s the home of the aquarium’s most notable residents: the manatees. The natural stone walls and paving material closely reflect the colors and finishes of the shores and aquarium exhibits. The structures in the garden use reclaimed wood and metals.

The use of texture, color, repetition and rhythm are incorporated in the garden to help visitors experience the same kind of energy they find at the manatee exhibit and the coral reefs.

Adventure Cove

Seely’s Landscape has created a garden representing several regions from the Columbus Zoo’s Heart of Africa.

Landscapers worked from pictures of the nation of Malawi to help inform the landscape, color choices and plant choices. The garden features plantscapes reminiscent of dry, desert-like conditions with grasses, pines, lavender and succulents.

Other plantscapes will showcase more tropical regions of Africa, with hostas, azaleas, hydrangeas, bulbs, cherry trees and many other plants.

Those plants require more water and would be found in rainforest-like conditions.

The garden includes a cobblestone pathway lined with weathered limestone boulders. The cobblestones are gray, mahogany and charcoal waves of pavers that resemble a river flowing to a watering hole. They were chosen to resemble colors representative of Africa.

The pathway takes visitors up to the large African gazebo. They can sit under a thatched roof held up by four large wooden posts and enjoy all the views of Africa. The inside of the gazebo is decorated with twinkling bulbs that might remind guests of the zoo’s annual Wildlights display.

Visitors can gaze on a large, flat rock that emerges from the grasses; on top, a large topiary of a lion surveys his surroundings. He is covered with moss, some of which is dyed dark reddish brown for his mane, and some of which is tan.

The most amazing view, however, is a small version of Victoria Falls in central Africa. The 12-foot-tall mountainous waterfall cascades over a rocky tropical plateau into the waterhole where all the animals come to drink.

Shearer Patio & Landscape Services based its garden display on the Columbus Zoo’s newest attraction, opening this spring.

Adventure Cove will harbor seals — a newcomer to the zoo — and California sea lions, which have not inhabited the zoo for almost 40 years. Shearer prominently positioned a pair of 3-foot-tall topiary sea lions in its own garden to represent the new attraction.

The entrance of this garden will catch visitors’ eyes as they pass under a large rock archway. On entering the garden, guests will see a variety of trees and plants. The large blue hydrangea flowers are sure to attract attention, and explorers will recognize the wonderful fragrance of hyacinths and lilacs in full bloom. Bright yellow forsythia stand out as well. As adventurers make their way through the garden, they should be sure to look skyward for the seagulls flying above.

The garden also includes a waterfall flowing into a pool surrounded by rock, which signifies the coast. This is where folks can find a sea-lion topiary. A lighthouse with a working light above the water will be a sure sign that visitors are in Adventure Cove.

The garden also features an outdoor living space with a cozy fireplace inside a spacious cedar structure. An outdoor kitchen with a grill and refrigerator awaits guests as well. The space is secluded with large evergreen trees.

Whether visitors are looking for ideas for their own homes or just want to get out of the winter funk and get the feel of spring, the Adventure Cove garden is a must-see.

In this garden modeled after The Wilds, visitors can walk through greenery past a rock water fountain with water flowing over the sides, accented by pink flowering crab trees. A path features blooming snow fountain cherries. Monkeys can be seen playing in the trees, and a deep-pink rhododendron blooms in the background.

As visitors continue walking through the brightly colored tulips, daffodils and hyacinths, they should beware of the large rhinoceros in the shrubs. Similarly, those sitting under the colorful decorated pavilion should be cautious of the large lion watching their every move.

Those continuing their adventure can take in all the bright and beautiful colored vegetation in the garden. The Wilds is a forest, with luscious trees, plants and shrubs in a dense tangle of vegetation.

Those thirsting for adventure can create their own Wilds garden at home, accented with a variety of plants, small and large assorted ferns, perennials, annuals and trailing vines. A flowing water feature is a must. Brightly colored furniture and decorative pottery with a variety of planted animal topiaries complete the theme.

Take a journey to the Columbus Zoo’s Polar Frontier and find an inuksuk — a cairn used by the Inuit people — standing sentry over Wood Landscape Services’ garden.

Traditional inhabitants include the polar bear, whose white coat stands out in a field of bright-pink ice plants.

The inuksuk, likely used for navigation or as a landmark, was constructed by stacking 4 tons of stone in a field of vibrant dianthus.

The bear and inuksuk will welcome visitors into the garden to stroll along a pathway constructed of natural cleft bluestone flagging. Black sandblasting coal is used as a jointing sand and provides a beautiful contrast to the colorful bluestone.

When it’s not blanketed with snow and ice, visitors can see that the polar frontier is beautiful in its own right, punctuated with stunted evergreens, snowy white rhododendron and hellebores.

Meadows of moss and sandstone create a soft and open feel to the garden. As the Northern Lights flicker in the distance, what could be cooler than a stop at the Aurora Ice Bar? Pull up a stool at the all-glass bar and spend some time enjoying the pure white carrera marble sculpture fountain, symbolic of a glacier. This one-of-a-kind sculpture was created by “blowing up” a chunk of marble and pinning it back together.

Visitors can rest for a moment with their favorite frosty beverage or a hot mug of cocoa and enjoy the view.

Topiary animals to showcase landscapers’ creativity

By JIM FISCHER Dispatch Media Group It’ll be a zoo at The Columbus Dispatch Home & Garden Show presented by Ohio Mulch — and not just because of the size of the crowds.

Members of the Columbus Landscape Association will create backyard gardens representing 10 different geographic regions featured at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. The focal centerpiece of each garden will be an animal topiary that matches the region.

The specific animals were selected by the zoo, and Tom Wood from Wood Landscape Services, who chairs the CLA committee that works with the Home & Garden Show, arranged for metal frames to be built for each of the 10 participating landscape designers.

It’s the first design Wood has done that’s featured an 8-foot-long polar bear.

“Each year we work to have a good theme that the landscapers can work with,” Wood said. “Partnering with the zoo this year, we came up with animal topiaries

as a way to connect the different regions of the zoo with our different designers.”

It’s all about the opportunity to be creative, he said. Each of the roughly 1,200-square-foot gardens will be built around the concept of the zoo animal and its environment.

“It shows the craft and the creativity of the landscape designers,” Wood said.

“Each participant will use some of the same materials while trying to keep the look as natural as possible.

“My garden, for example, might not necessarily be repeatable in someone’s backyard, but if you can show some fun and creativity – and a strong theme really lends itself to that – then you can show something that’s attractive to potential customers.”

Around his polar bear, Wood plans to incorporate some of the Inuit culture that can be found at the zoo’s Polar Frontier.

“I think most of the gardens are going to do some of that,” he said.

show is over, at the Columbus Zoo — was a special challenge. Wood worked with Topiary Tree in New Jersey, one of only a handful of companies that do this kind of work, to create the animal structures.

“Tom sent us pictures of the animals he wanted, and said he wanted them to be usable outdoors and also to have mossing and lights and other treatments on the frames,” said Cindy Eldridge of Topiary Tree. “It’s a heavy wire frame, galvanized and welded, with chicken wire wrapped around it. That metal will last forever.”

Eldridge said you might have seen one of her creations on a recent “Today” show, as NBC launched its Peacock streaming service at an event in Rockefeller Center that featured a giant topiary peacock.

Wood is using polyester filling and lights to create a “glowing polar bear.”

“The process is a lot of having ideas and seeing how you can implement them,” he said. “It’s that kind of creativity and problem solving that keeps me in the landscape business.”

For Mark Bowe, old barn reclamation is a passion project

By STEVE STEPHENS The Columbus Dispatch The beautiful, rustic barns of the 19th century have long marked the progress of American pioneers across the continent.

Many were demolished or burned, though, as changing agricultural practices made the barns obsolete.

But recently, more and more people have become aware of their historic and architectural value. And people such as Mark Bowe have made it their mission to save as much of the lovely old structures as they can.

Bowe, the owner of barn-reclamation company Barnwood Living and the star of the DIY Network series “Barnwood Builders,” will appear Feb. 23 at the Dispatch Spring Home & Garden Show at the Ohio Expo Center.

“A lot of people have questions about the television show, and I will give them straight, honest answers,” Bowe said by phone from his West Virginia office.

“We’re going to allot time for pictures,

autographs and hopefully a lot of laughs.”

Before starting his business, Bowe worked in a coal mine.

“I was actually underground when a guy asked me to help him tear down an old building. I made $1,700 from the old wood.”

Inspired, Bowe quit the mine and started an antique-log company.

“Then I went broke and went back to the coal mine.”

But his second attempt has resulted in a thriving business that includes a popular showroom in White Sulphur Springs as well as a measure of television fame.

Bowe, 49, has a simple formula for success: “Work hard, be kind and take pride.

“If you do those three things, you can be successful in life. That’s what we do and it’s worked out well. And it works in any profession.”

The Buckeye State “has some of the best barns we’ve ever seen,” Bowe said.

Nicole Curtis, star of the hit DIY and HGTV show “Rehab Addict,” has been renovating old houses even before her show premiered in 2010.

Curtis, 43, will appear Feb. 22 at the Spring Dispatch Home & Garden Show presented by Ohio Mulch.

Ahead of her appearance, The Dispatch recently spoke with her by phone from her hometown of Detroit, where she’s still rehabbing homes, during a break in her busy schedule. (The interview has been edited for length and clarity).

Q: What will you be talking about at the Home & Garden Show?

A: We like to turn it into a little party, with a lot of Q&A. My fans have invested a decade in our show. It’s been really fun to meet so many of them in person. We like to just talk and hang out.

Q: What originally drew you to old homes?

A: I always loved old houses. My grandparents’ idea of a fun Sunday was driving through old neighborhoods and looking at the houses. When I was a kid in the ’70s and ’80s, (in Detroit) no one lived in a lot of those old city properties. But I was fascinated by those huge castle homes. I thought I was going to be stuck in a boring suburban home.

I just wanted what I wanted, and I wanted a big old house. Now I own a bunch of them.

Q: I see that you recently restored a house your grandparents built and lived in.

What was that like?

A: That was crazy. The family house, that they’d had to sell years ago, came up for sale and I had the ability to buy it.

I was pregnant at the time, my life was very chaotic, and it was a massive project.

My grandparents were against it.

I asked, “Why not, Gramps?”

“Well, you know it needs a new roof.”

It had been empty for years, there was so much to do, but my dear old gramps was like, “Damn girl, it needs a roof!”

The first people to walk through that house when it was finished were my grandparents.

My grandpa cried. He had built it with his own hands and he thought it was gone forever.

The fact I could put that together for them was great. Unfortunately, I lost both of them in the past few years.

Q: You’re the author of a memoir, “Better Than New: Lessons I’ve Learned from Saving Old Homes.” What was it like writing a book?

A: That was complete torture. For someone who is a complete procrastinator and puts everything off, deadlines are hard to meet. My publisher said no one ever put together a book in this manner.

At one point, I was literally cutting pictures out and pasting them to show what I wanted.

“Can’t you do this in Photoshop?”

No, I can’t. It was anything but easy, but it was fun telling my story.

I went from someone who was broke to someone in my position now. It wasn’t an overnight success, but was one I never saw coming.

Everyone was expecting me to write a design book. No, that would bore me.

And I cannot say “thank you,” enough. Every single person who has watched our show has changed our lives, mine and my crew, for the better. I’m so excited to still be rocking this.

Mark Bowe Continued from previous page “There’s an amazing stretch between Mansfield and Massillon. A lot of barns were built on that fertile soil, and we’ve spent a lot of time there.”

Visitors to the Home & Garden Show will get a look at some of that great Ohio barn wood at the Adirondack fishing lodge exhibit, constructed by the Mt. Vernon Barn Co., another company that rebuilds old barns and repurposes old barn wood.

The lodge “will be made with handhewn reclaimed timbers from the early- to mid-1800s,” said company president Doug

Morgan.

The wood is from a barn taken down last year in the Mount Vernon area, Morgan said.

Old barns “are like works of art, handmade sculptures,” he said.

“I used to get upset when I saw an old barn that was falling into disrepair, until I talked to the farmers. The modern pole barn is a lot more practical for modern agricultural usage. You can’t blame farmers for not maintaining structures that won’t pay their own way.”

But now the wood from the old barns has become a popular material for construction or remodeling.

“A lot of people want to buy things that have a story and are a part of history,” Bowe said.

Using old barn wood “makes their home place more than something to use just for shelter, but a real home, made with real materials that had their own unique life before you reused them,” he said.

So businesses such as Bowe’s and Morgan’s buy the old barns, dismantling

them to rebuild them elsewhere, or to use the beautiful wood in new projects.

“I feel like we’re doing something important in saving these structures for our children and grandchildren,” Morgan said.

“These barns are the last vestiges of first growth forest that we have left; magnificent white oak, chestnut, beech.”

Morgan, 63, is also a practicing attorney.

“But if I can have a legacy, I’d rather it be: ‘He saved 100 great Ohio barns.’”

New Albany landscaper Nick McCullough creates awe-inspiring garden for the country’s biggest and oldest flower show.

Nick McCullough doesn’t shy away from a landscape design challenge. For the past 15 years, he’s created awardwinning designs from a pint-sized prairie garden in German Village to large estate gardens in New Albany. So, when asked to build his national reputation by becoming a featured garden designer at the 2019 Philadelphia Flower Show, he welcomed the challenge. In Philadelphia earlier this spring he was tasked with designing a 2,000-square-foot garden inside a convention center. Even more daunting is the fact that he debuted the project before an audience of 250,000 people.

“It’s the oldest and largest indoor flower show, put on since 1829, and to be a part of that legacy is such an honor and something always in my heart,” says McCullough. “I’m a firm believer in making your own luck and if you put yourself out there it will pay off in dividends.” McCullough, 39, a local landscaper with 3 million followers on Pinterest, invited thousands of his Instagram followers behind-the-scenes as he designed and installed the exhibit for the flower show.

His nine-month journey to the Philadelphia show began last summer as he started playing with ideas around the show’s “Flower Power” theme, which celebrates flowers’ impact on everyday lives in concert with the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock music festival.

McCullough’s concept for the show clicked after an October road trip to the Cleveland Museum of Art to see Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirrors. In Cleveland, McCullough and his family of four stepped into the Japanese artist’s intimate dark, mirrored room with tiny suspended lights to, as the artist says, “lose themselves in the

grandeur of the universe.” The experience moved McCullough to build a “Flower Power” sensation of infinite blooms.

“My inspiration was to overwhelm viewers with an explosion of flowers and emotions,” says McCullough. He expanded the concept with a keyhole design giving viewers the perspective of a Woodstock stage overlooking an infinite crowd of perennial flowers multiplied by mirrors set in the corners of the exhibit. He named his design “All Along the Watchtower,” after the Bob Dylan/Jimi Hendrix song, and added six 10-foot towers to mimic Woodstock’s lighting and sound scaffolding.

The design’s execution presented several challenges. First, he says pulling off an accurate bloom sequence was “really, really tough.” It required forcing 3,000 June-flowering perennials to bloom in early March. Adjustments were made. For example, the birch trees in the exhibit were left bare because it was too costly to force their leaves and some of McCullough’s favorite perennials, such as alliums and penstemon, were swapped for others more easily forced into bloom.

“You just don’t go buy these plants off a nursery cart,” says McCullough who explains how his experienced partner, Stoney Bank Nurseries, has been forcing plants into bloom for shows for 40 years.

The Pennsylvania-based nursery staff places the perennials in coolers from October to December to simulate winter conditions then moves them to a heated, lighted greenhouse to simulate spring.

Carbon dioxide injections further stimulate slower blooms, while others are moved back and forth between the cooler and greenhouse to precisely peak in time for the show.

“It’s crazy,” says McCullough. “There are 30 acres under the roof, and 4,000 people building stuff leading up to the show. Just to get stuff to your garden is so tough; it’s like an ant’s nest.”

He shared how his team waited for two days for the firewood to be delivered for his exhibit’s stacked, wooden walls. A neighboring exhibitor then blocked the entrance to McCullough’s exhibit with two large crates. When the crates were finally moved, McCullough’s wife and business partner, Allison MCullough, built the walls as the rest of the team finished the garden.

McCullough says the most satisfying moment was seeing the completed garden.

“It’s something that you’ve been thinking about for nine months, and it’s finally come to fruition,” he says. “For a kid that grew up on a strawberry farm in Ohio to being viewed on such a large stage for garden design is a massive thing for me.”

The final design shined true to his “contained chaos” style with Belgian influences, proven perennials in shades of purple, rich textures, a backdrop of six 25-foot birch trees and Midwest modern details, including a circular reflecting pool in Corten steel, metal reflecting balls, sixand-a-half cords of stacked firewood walls and stylish pollinator nesting boxes.

“I certainly could have gone there and just created a show garden that tied nothing back to my realistic world of design,” says McCullough. “But, the biggest thing for me was to create a garden that’s true to who I am as a designer, so people could get my design aesthetic. And,

we really achieved that in spades.”

While the judges awarded the Flower Show Cup, the show’s top award, to a seasoned exhibitor with a highly themed landscape of a restored old mill, McCullough’s real-world design won the hearts of many visitors.

“It’s my favorite,” says Katie Dubow, creative director of the Garden Media Group, a Philadelphia-based marketing firm for the green industry. “What I love is that the garden is both literal and abstract. I watched along on Instagram as he designed it and immediately got that the tower structures were mimicking the scaffolding from Woodstock. I love how densely planted the astilbes, yarrows, salvias and coneflowers were. He says he wanted onlookers to be overwhelmed— as if we were standing on the stage at Woodstock, looking out into a sea of faces—and you feel it.

“Many of his ideas were able to be translated to a home garden, and that’s what I go to the show looking for,” she added.

McCullough, now back home and working for his Central Ohio clients, relishes the creative experience he had in Philadelphia, and the career milestone.

Nick will present his experience from the Philadelphia Flower Show at the Home & Garden Show on Sunday, March 1, on the Ag Pro Garden Stage.

‘Dr. Lori’ helps bring history to life for families

At the same time, Verderame celebrates what might seem to be less successful appraisals as well.

“I heard from someone who said I told them their old family kitchen table was a piece of junk, but they kept it and tell the story around the table at family gatherings,” she said.

In addition to providing appraisals, Verderame said she also talks about things such as how to best price and market items for sale, what kinds of items should never be put in a yard sale and what items need to stay in families.

“I’m not a deal-maker,” she said. “I feel it’s important to keep appraisals separate from buying and selling.”

In the end, it’s all about her audience.

“Of course the objects are still fascinating to me after all these years, but history is about people. The objects are the things that people made and used, and that’s what’s important,” Verderame said. “I love being able to offer that kind of instruction and, along the way, help buyers and sellers make a lot of money.”

The history professor turned star antiques appraiser will return to central Ohio for shows at this year’s Columbus Dispatch Home & Garden Show presented

by Ohio Mulch. Whether you know her from the History Channel’s “The Curse of Oak Island,” Discovery Channel’s “Auction Kings” or her popular YouTube channel, you know she knows her stuff.

That means she probably knows about your stuff, too, so be sure to bring that family heirloom or flea market find for her to examine.

“People are interested in the stories, whether learning about an object from their family’s past or what makes an object valuable if it’s something they’re planning to sell,” Verderame said by phone from her Pennsylvania home. “Of course, some people are interested in making money and flipping items and doing it with my help.

But a lot of people are just interested in how their grandmother might have used something.”

Verderame got informal training from a young age, tagging along with her father to flea markets, yard sales and thrift shops.

“I was a young person around all these old people, just soaking up all this historical information,” she said.

She went on to earn multiple degrees in history, working in museums and teaching at universities along the way. In the mid1990’s, she started on what she calls the “antique appraisal comedy tour.”

“My background is academic, and having a Ph.D. is obviously a good foundation for what I do now,” she said. “But I had to learn, as a professor, to also be entertaining and educational at the same time.”

Verderame said she’s been fortunate throughout her career to have built a lot of community. She tells the story of meeting a 5-year-old who, along with her grandfather, brought a piece of Western art to one of her shows. Verderame heard from the same person 20 years later and she had built a sizable collection of Western art.

White House floral designer’s savvy will enlighten garden show crowds

The leader of the free world basked in the beauty of Laura Dowling’s floral arrangements — and now you can, too.

Laura Dowling, former chief floral designer of the White House, will appear Feb. 23 during The Columbus Dispatch Home & Garden Show presented by Ohio Mulch, which runs Feb. 22 through March 1 at the Ohio Expo Center, 717 E. 17th Ave. The show is closed Feb. 25.

Dowling will share behind-the-scenes stories from her time as the White House’s chief floral designer and demonstrate tips and techniques for decorating with flowers at home.

Dowling also will sign copies of her new book, “Bouquets,” after each presentation and host giveaways of her floral arrangements. In “Bouquets,” which was released Jan. 31 by Stichting Kunstboek, she offers step-by-step tutorials on how to arrange bouquets for all occasions.

Dowling also is the author of “Wreaths,” another collection of how-to guides, and “Floral Diplomacy: At the White House,” which recounts her time as the White House chief floral designer from 2009 to 2015 during the Obama administration.

The White House chief floral designer is responsible for the planning, design, arrangement and placement of all floral decorations for the First Family, including official state events and private functions.

Dowling said while working at the White House, she called on her training and experience in public policy. She holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in public policy from the University of Washington and once worked as a legislative assistant to former Senator Slade Gorton. She also worked in communications and fundraising at the Nature Conservancy.

During a trip to Paris in 2000, Dowling said she was amazed by the bouquets she saw there, inspiring her to enroll at the city’s L’Ecole des Fleurs to learn the art of flower arranging.

While at the White House, Dowling said,

she used flowers to support diplomatic efforts and represent nations’ cultural traditions.

During a state dinner for India, for example, she employed the colors of the Indian peacock for the color scheme of the floral table displays. When a delegation from Mexico visited, she created arrangements with colors seen on butterflies that originated in then-Mexican president Felipe Calderon’s hometown of Morelia.

“I was a policy analyst before I became a florist,” she said during a TED Talk about

her tenure at the White House. “When I was working with flowers, I really saw flowers in a communications and strategic way. In the White House, I took a strategic approach to design, and I really thought flowers could support and contribute to this transformational idea.”

Dowling said one occasion in particular drew on her personal experience: She worked with Gold Star families, who have lost loved ones in military service, to design wreaths that the president lays on soldiers’ graves at Arlington Cemetery on Memorial Day.

Dowling said she bonded with the Gold Star families, since at age 6 she lost her own father, a decorated U.S. Army helicopter pilot, in Vietnam.

“On that day, I saw firsthand, very up close and personal,” she said, “the importance of floral symbolism.”

Dowling will appear on Sunday Feb. 23 with stage presentations at 1 and 4 p.m., and one person in the audience will take home her floral arrangement creation.

Jack Hanna’s animal antics add bite to home show

I’d lost my mind,” Hanna recalled.

Hanna said the incident is the only time an animal has ever bitten him — and it happened, he said, because a sudden offstage drumbeat startled the beaver.

Hanna credits his father with encouraging him to pursue a dream that has led him to all corners of the earth while hosting “Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild,” an Emmy Award-winning TV series now in its 13th season.

Hanna was raised on a farm near Knoxville, Tenn., and said he often helped a visiting veterinarian treat animals on the family farm.

“I asked to help him on our farm (and) then at his clinic,” said Hanna.

But a visit to the Knoxville Zoo opened up a new world for Hanna.

“Zoos were just (animals behind) bars back then,” said Hanna, who recalled his father encouraging him to pursue his dream of being a zookeeper despite the ridicule he sometimes received.

Hanna was director of a zoo in Sanford, Fla., when a turn led him to central Ohio.

In 1978, the Hannas’ daughter had an illness — from which she recovered — and the staff at St. Jude’s Research Hospital in Memphis referred the family to Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

“It happened that the Columbus Zoo was looking for a director at the time,” Hanna said.

Since then, Hanna has made the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium known around the world.

A generation of central Ohio residents watched Jack Hanna on local television in the 1980s as he introduced a cadre of critters from the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium.

The programs were the beginning of a new chapter in a career that has focused on showcasing some of the world’s most exotic animals.

Central Ohioans will have the opportunity to revisit those memories and welcome Hanna home at The Columbus Dispatch Home & Garden Show presented

by Ohio Mulch, which runs Feb. 22 through March 1 (except Feb. 25) at the Ohio Expo Center, 717 E. 17th Ave. Hanna will perform at 2 and 4 p.m.

March 1 on the Simple Bath Simple Kitchen Home Stage. In between the shows, “Jungle Jack” will greet fans.

Hanna also will participate in a private VIP meet-and-greet event earlier in the day, said Stephen Zonars, who handles live events and promotions for the Dispatch Media Group.

“A limited number of tickets will be sold through our website, and I’m sure they’ll go very fast,” Zonars said.

The home and garden show will be a homecoming for Hanna, who actually lives at the zoo.

“Columbus, Ohio, means more to my family than I can say. I owe a great deal to Columbus (and) I’m living my dream here,” Hanna, 72, said.

Hanna lives at the zoo with Suzi, his wife of 52 years, at a residence the zoo purchased and absorbed inside the zoo’s property. Hanna pays rent to live at the residence.

The unique address has provided moments of levity for Hanna.

In 1988, after a beaver bit him during an appearance on Late Night with David Letterman, Hanna required treatment at a New York City hospital.

“They asked for my address and I said, ‘the Columbus Zoo.’ Then they said, ‘no, not where you work — where do you live?’ and I said ‘the zoo.’ They probably thought

Hanna’s stage show at the Home & Garden Show will feature penguins, a sloth, a kangaroo, a variety of cats and other animals from the zoo.

Fords carve out niche as home renovators

Fans of HGTV’s original series “Restored by the Fords” will have the opportunity to meet the sibling personalities at The Columbus Dispatch Home & Garden Show presented by Ohio Mulch.

Leanne and Steve Ford will appear Saturday, Feb. 29, on the Simple Bath Simple Kitchen Home Stage.

On “Restored by the Fords,” interior designer Leanne comes up with innovative ways to restore historic homes in Pennsylvania and then Steve, a contractor, makes her ideas come to life.

“It’s amazing to help people create new homes and to inspire people to want to do it,” Leanne said.

The siblings will begin filming the third season of “Restored by the Fords” in April. It will be shown later this year on HGTV. The 16 episodes of season two, and those of the first season, were filmed in the Pittsburgh area, where the Fords were born and raised.

“We love doing the show in Pittsburgh because of all the unique architecture, the character and the history,” Leanne said. “That is an important part of the show, too, as we explain things about the house we are restoring.”

she had both an eye and a passion for interior design and she decided to make a change.

“I found I wanted to help people improve their own space and make it just what they want,” she said.

Steve said he always enjoyed working with his hands and being creative, which led him into a career in

contracting and sometimes working at home and garden shows selling and installing windows, siding and roofing.

“Then Steve began working on some of (my) interior designs,” Leanne said, and that started the pair on the path to the HGTV series.

“Leanne brings me her ideas and I make them happen,” Steve said, such as the remodeling of a private residence in the Sewickley area of Pittsburgh – a building that once was a schoolhouse.

The project was featured in Country Living magazine.

“A lucky friend” tipped off producers at HGTV about the story and a pilot for “Restored by the Fords” was produced, resulting in the continuing series.

Leanne and Steve will meet guests in a private VIP session at 1 p.m. on Feb. 29 at the Home & Garden Show.

Beginning at 3 p.m., the Fords will give a 30-40 minute stage presentation at the Simple Bath Simple Kitchen Home Stage, which is included in the price of their general admission ticket. It will be their first appearance at the event.

During the stage show, Leanne and Steve will discuss the making of the “Restored by the Fords” series as well as take questions from the audience. After the stage presentation they will greet guests who’d like a selfie with them.

Fishing lodge creates cozy space from old barns’ best parts

By PAUL COMSTOCK Dispatch Media Group An Adirondack Fishing Lodge will come together in a matter of hours as part of The Columbus Dispatch Home & Garden Show presented by Ohio Mulch, demonstrating the idea of sustainability and the use of reclaimed materials.

The lodge will be assembled using historic timber frame and other vintage components, said Doug Morgan of the Mount Vernon Barn Co. of Fredericktown.

Morgan said his company specializes in finding the best and earliest hand-hewn barns and repurposing them as residences and other spaces.

Among the company’s many projects was constructing the Wells Barn at Franklin Park Conservatory.

The 200-year-old barn now hosts events.

Many of Mount Vernon Barn’s projects are large-scale, but the

Adirondack fishing lodge will be a smaller structure.

The 24-by-17-foot lodge will have timber-framed walls and a steep pitched roof, almost 20 feet tall, made of reclaimed corrugated metal.

Displayed with a pond, boardwalk and dock, the lodge will have a lot of character, he said. Interior designers and landscape architects contributed ideas for the concept.

The lodge also will have a kitchen, bedroom loft and an antique potbelly stove.

“I’ll be there to answer questions.

It’ll be neat. People will really enjoy it. It will be a nice mix of modern and vintage,” said Morgan.

The lodge was designed by WSA Architects, based in Columbus’ Brewery District.

Ashley Kerwood of WSA said the goal was to create a lodge that felt modern and contemporary, while incorporating sustainability and reclaimed materials.

“There’s a really big trend with tiny living,” Kerwood said. “We wanted to also showcase something along those lines. We achieved it with this design.

“It should be very cool when it’s done.”

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is another collaborator on the project.

The zoo’s ideas helped make the lodge’s yard wildlife-friendly — for example, a bat house is part of the SUPPORTED BY AEP OHIO’S ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROGRAM layout — but pains were also taken to keep deer out of the area, said Peter Fingerhut, the zoo’s vice president of marketing and sales.

The lodge is designed to be energyefficient, with features compatible SMALL USE with an urban, suburban or rural HORIZONTAL setting, he said.

Master Gardener Volunteers spreading their knowledge at Home and Garden Show

The program’s ongoing initiatives include: • Integrated Pest Management, which focuses on teaching and demonstrating pest-control techniques to maintain gardens • Invasive Species, which teaches about the potential damage that invasive plant species might cause to the environment, and how to manage or eradicate these species • Backyard and Local Foods, which promotes community gardens, local food councils/policies, urban agriculture, and teaching and demonstrating how to grow vegetables.

• Environmental Horticulture, which focuses on a variety of horticulture programs, including stormwater management, rain gardens, how to select the best plants and how to start a garden.

Recently completed projects include a

joint initiative by the Fayette County Master Gardener Volunteers and the Carnegie Public Library to teach children ages 3-8 about horticulture by creating their own gardens.

Children completed such activities as taking buckets of soil from different places and using magnifying glasses to examine particles and insects.

“We took pictures of the garden to watch its progress,” said Fayette County Master Gardener Volunteers member Sara Creamer.

“The kids loved the activities in the garden.

The (adults) loved being reminded how wonderfully different kids and plants are.”

The Ohio State University Extension Master Gardener Volunteers program is lending the skills of its green thumbs to this year’s The Columbus Dispatch Home & Garden Show presented by Ohio Mulch.

The program provides intensive training in horticulture to Ohio residents who volunteer their time assisting with educational programs and activities for other Ohioans through their local OSU Extension county office.

“We have an incredible resource of horticulture teachers right here in Ohio,” said Pamela Bennett, Master Gardener Volunteers program director. “We truly are fortunate to have such passionate horticulture educators.”

Program participants are not required to have prior gardening skills or knowledge — just a passion for learning about gardening and sharing knowledge with others, Bennett said.

The volunteer program originated in Seattle in 1972, according to the program’s website, mastergardener.osu.edu. The Extension agent in the King County office of Washington State University began to train volunteers to research public gardening, and the concept soon spread across the United States, Canada and other countries.

The program has existed in Ohio since the late 1970’s, initially starting in urban counties and growing to more than 3,000 active Master Gardener Volunteers in more than 62 Ohio urban, suburban and rural counties.

Working with county OSU Extension staff, Master Gardener Volunteers provide educational services to their communities, such as developing community gardens, answering gardening questions from the public, conducting plant clinics and taking part in gardening activities with children, senior citizens and people with disabilities.

Most of their training takes place in late winter to early spring, although some counties train in the summer or fall. Many

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is proud to be a part of the Dispatch Home & Garden Show and to support our Central Ohio community! Home to more than 10,000 animals representing over 600 species from around the globe, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium welcomes over 2.5 million guests each year, sharing its mission to lead and inspire by connecting people and wildlife. The Zoo complex is a recreational and education destination that includes the 22-acre Zoombezi Bay water park and 18-hole Safari Golf Club. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium also manages The Wilds, a 10,000-acre conservation center and safari park located in southeastern Ohio.

Adventure Cove, the Zoo’s newest region scheduled to open this spring, mirrors the coastal wharf of San Francisco’s Pier 39. With vibrant salt-worn storefronts and the bellows of sea lions, the 4.1-acre region honors Jungle Jack Hanna’s living legacy, shares conservation success stories and celebrates our connection with wildlife. Prepare to be immersed in an impactful and exciting world of wildlife as soon as you enter the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium!

In addition to sea lions and harbor seals, Adventure Cove will also feature Jack Hanna’s Animal Encounters Village, which will include over 50 different species from around the world. The stingray touch experience is also returning – renovated and open to everyone year-round! »

MAKING A LOCAL AND GLOBAL IMPACT As a leader among professionally-managed zoological parks for wildlife conservation, the Columbus Zoo works with many partners to make a difference for wildlife and wild places, with a portion of every admission ticket supporting these efforts. Each year, the Zoo also contributes $4 million annually of privately raised funds in support of conservation projects worldwide. In 2018 alone, the Columbus Zoo supported 81 active projects in 42 countries, helping more than 69 species around the world!

Zoo guests will be able to view the cub with his mother after they emerge from their den in the spring. The birth is a tremendous achievement for the Zoo in efforts of protecting threatened polar bear populations. Aurora’s past litters include one daughter, Nora, born in 2015, and a set of twins— daughter, Neva, and son, Nuniq—born in 2016. The Zoo’s other adult female, Anana (Aurora’s twin sister), also gave birth to a daughter, Amelia Gray, in 2016. Since 2015, only eight polar bear cubs have been born in U.S.

A large part of our efforts come from our staff members. We are helping to restore wildlife populations across the globe, as well as right here in our own backyard! In addition, for over 25 years, our Partners In Conservation program has protected gorillas and other species in Rwanda and surrounding countries by working with local people to help them improve their lives and help wildlife thrive. The Zoo’s operations also have an annual $208.8 million economic impact on Franklin County and support over 1,800 jobs!

As co-host of Sunny in the Morning on Sunny 95 and host of Momcast, Stacy entertains listeners while juggling her job, family and co-host. Who she handles best remains to be seen. Her husband and daughter think she’s crazy. She is.

When Mike Rosati founded Rosati Windows in 2000, the business was housed in a 9,000-square-foot facility in Hilliard and Rosati and his longtime associate, John Vaccani, were the only employees.

Twenty years later, the business, which includes a manufacturing facility, features a nearly 60,000-square foot building at 4200 Roberts Rd. and has about 110 employees.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I think it would turn into this,” said Rosati, a Columbus native who has been in the windows business for more than 35 years. “It’s a whole lot bigger than I ever expected. We’ve had huge growth spurts.

What if a homeowner wants a new home — but doesn’t want to move?

It’s a common dilemma, but Dave Fox Design Build Remodelers typically has the solution.

Founded in 1982 by its namesake who retired in 2005, the employee-owned company based in northwest Columbus designs and remodels single-family residences.

While Dave Fox Design Build Remodelers sometimes will remodel a home based on a client’s submitted design, it almost always works with the client to craft a design, Demos said.

Projects are generally “upscale” and do not entail “handyman” projects, he said.

Room additions and remodels of kitchens, bathrooms and basements are typical projects for the company, which generally limits its range to within a 35-mile radius of its offices and studio, Demos said.

According to Elizabeth Boyuk, the vice president of regional marketing and communications in central Ohio for Fifth Third, her company sees the Columbus Zoo as “a jewel in the community” that shares Fifth Third’s values.

If possible, inspect the contractor’s work yourself.

• Ask for multiple quotes. You should always shop around and get at least three quotes from different businesses. Make sure all bids consider the same set of criteria. Remember that the lowest bid may not necessarily be the best; if one bid is significantly lower than the others are, the contractor may be cutting corners or may not understand your work requirements and needs.

• Get it in writing. Always get estimates in writing and never let any work begin without a written and signed contract. Do not be pressured into signing an agreement before you are ready and make sure you read and understand everything before signing. The contract should include contact information, start and complete dates, a detailed

description of the exact work to be done, any material costs, payment arrangements and warranty information.

Specify who is to obtain necessary building permits and who is responsible for clean-up. Make sure all verbal promises are included in the contract. Ask how much work will be subcontracted and ask for information on the subcontractors. Ask questions if you do not understand any part of the contract. Never sign an incomplete or partially blank contract.

• Verify license and insurance. Always be sure that the company you decide to work with has the necessary licenses and insurance to work in your region. Once you have your contractor’s insurance information, call the carrier to confirm appropriate coverage for workers compensation, property damage, and personal liability in case of accidents.

• Confirm building permits. Your contractor must have the correct permits before starting your project. They will usually obtain the permits, but you will probably pay for them. That should be detailed in your contract.

• Inquire about a lien waiver. A lien waiver is a statement from your contractor that says all suppliers and subcontractors have been paid for their work.

• Arrange a payment schedule. Never pay in full up

front. Stagger your payments so your final payment is not due until the work is complete and you have fully inspected it. Do not pay cash; make sure a check is written to a company, not an individual, or that you use a credit card.

• Get a receipt. Request a receipt marked “Paid in Full” when the job is completed and your final payment made.

• Keep your contract. Hold on to your contract for future reference or if any questions arise after the work is complete.

by Oakland Nurseries, held in concert with the annual Columbus Dispatch Home & Garden Show presented by Ohio Mulch.

From reader interaction, it was clear that many avid gardeners live in central Ohio, said Dispatch At Home editor Becky Kover. The Backyard Garden Awards were conceived as a way to give residents the opportunity to showcase their home gardens.

The first year, she said, “we were just overwhelmed with the response.” And participation just grew from there, she said.

Still, Kover said, she’s often impressed not by the quantity of applicants but the quality of their submissions. Gardeners pour their time, money and hearts into their gardens, creating oases for their homes, she said.

“They’re just simply beautiful,” Kover said.

For the third year of the awards, applicants can submit photos of their backyard landscapes online beginning July 1. In August, Master Gardeners judge the entries and select the first-, secondand third-place winners in each of six categories.

Winners will be invited to attend an awards ceremony during the fall home and garden show, and some will be featured in the Dispatch’s At Home section.

The judging for the awards is coordinated by Master Gardener volunteers from the Ohio State University Extension, said Mike Hogan, OSU Extension educator and associate professor.

The volunteers, Hogan said, are trained in gardening and horticulture. When they review garden photos submitted online, they choose several applications in each category to visit in person. Many factors are included in the judging process, including aesthetics and specific objectives for individual categories.

The judges greatly enjoy looking at the gardens and the creativity people employ in their designs, Hogan said.

“They seem very intentional, both in plant selection and design,” he said.

Backyard gardens Continued from previous page depends on their size and whether an applicant is maintaining a previous one or starting from scratch, Hogan said. Entries range from large community gardens to small pocket gardens in homeowners’ yards.

“It certainly is many, many hours,” he said, along with a fair amount of money.

Some gardeners apply year after year in different categories, he said. Many people incorporate art into their spaces, such as water features, bird baths or decorative pieces. Benches and accent lighting for plants or shrubs are not uncommon.

Some gardens are functional, some are formal and some offer fruits and vegetables,

said Mark Reiner, vice president of Oakland Nurseries. Perennial gardens often have more of a natural look, while container gardens are excellent for those limited by space, he said.

“That’s going to be all about color, for the most part,” he said.

Those who take the task seriously, he said, are never really done working on their spaces, and often take advantage of warm days in February to get outside.

The real preparation, he said, begins when the weather breaks in March or April.

“It’s pretty amazing what some of these people are doing,” he said.
