How the list was compiled Castle Connolly Top Doctors is a health care research company and the official source for Top Doctors for the past 25 years. Castle Connolly’s established nomination survey, research, screening and selection process, under the direction of a medical doctor, involves many hundreds of thousands of physicians as well as academic medical centers, specialty hospitals and regional and community hospitals all across the nation. The online nominations process—located at castleconnolly.com/ nominations—is open to all licensed physicians in the United States who are able to nominate physicians in any medical specialty and in any part of the country, as well as indicate whether the nominated physicians is, in their opinion, among the best in their region in their medical specialty or among the best in the nation in their medical specialty. Once nominated, Castle Connolly’s physician-led team of researchers follows a rigorous screening process to select top doctors on both the national and regional levels. Careful screening of doctors’ educational and professional experience is essential before final selection is made among those physicians most highly regarded by their peers. The result: We identify the top doctors in America and provide you, the consumer, with detailed information about their education, training and special expertise in our paperback guides, national and regional magazine “Top Doctors” features and online directories.

Nobody wants to think about who they’d call if they or a loved one is diagnosed with a brain aneurysm. However, the doctor you choose to treat the condition often makes the difference. “It’s a very technically challenging area. Timing and experience matter,” says Dr. Robert Gewirtz, who has focused on treating aneurysms for much of his 24-year career. “We’re dealing with blood vessels that are only a couple millimeters in size. It’s a highstakes situation where if you make a mistake, the patient can pay dearly for it. You have to be on your game, focused, attentive and decisive in what you do.” Fortunately for his patients, Gewirtz is Columbus’ most experienced neurosurgeon in the field of aneurysm surgery, and among the most experienced in the state. Practicing at Central Ohio Neurological Surgeons,

which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, has given him a wealth of experience. Gewirtz also treats the full spectrum of neurosurgical diseases of the brain and spine. One area he has helped pioneer in Columbus is outpatient surgery of the spine. He is a founding member of Eastwind Surgical, the first outpatient surgery center in Columbus dedicated specifically to spinal surgery and pain. His philosophy when it comes to caring for his patients is centered on high-quality, technologically sophisticated services, delivered with compassion and efficiency. That devotion to ensuring his patients’ wellbeing—along with his extensive experience in the field—both led his colleagues to nominate him as a Top Doctor in neurological surgery. Being named a Top Doctor in each of the past five years and again in 2020 remains an honored distinction each year.

TYLER M. ANGELOS, M.D., F.A.C.S. Whether a patient needs plastic surgery due to an accident, cancer, extreme weight loss or multiple pregnancies, Dr. Tyler M. Angelos at Columbus Aesthetic & Plastic Surgery works hard to enhance each patient’s natural beauty and build their self-esteem. “I chose to go into plastic surgery because I love helping others feel better about themselves,” says Angelos. “The results should be natural and emphasize one’s individuality. I’m not trying to drastically change how they look. It’s meant to highlight their own unique physical traits.” Angelos performs cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries of the face, breast and body and, unlike doctors at some other aestheic medicine practices, personally performs injections such as Botox and facial fillers. “As medical technology evolves, it is exciting to see the changes that can be

used to contour and shape the body,” he says. “Specifically, great advances have been made in skin tightening, which can minimize unsightly scars.” For patients who have done all they can with diet and exercise, “we can help with that last step to get them back where they want to be,” he says. “That’s very gratifying.” Angelos serves as the section chairman of plastic surgery for Riverside Methodist Hospital and has been published in journals such as Annals of Plastic Surgery and a leading plastic surgery textbook. “Plastic surgery gets a bad rap because people think they’re going to come out with this really overdone look,” he says. “But in the right hands, plastic surgery can be done very well and just help them age more gracefully.”

John K. Wakelin, M.D., F.A.C.S. Listening carefully to patients and providing exceptional support throughout the surgery process makes Dr. John K. Wakelin of Columbus Aesthetic & Plastic Surgery stand out among his peers. “Understanding my patients’ goals is paramount to meeting their expectations,” says Wakelin, who has been named one of “America’s Top Plastic Surgeons” by the Consumer’s Research Council of America every year since 2006. “This is why listening to my patients and establishing an honest, compassionate and educational relationship with them is so important.” Wakelin’s specialized training, years of experience and meticulous attention to detail help him accomplish his patients’ goals once a treatment plan is in place. “My team and I remain available at every step to support them through the process,” he says. “At the end of the day,

my goal is to accomplish not only superb, natural results but to also have provided the best overall healthcare experience that my patients have ever had.” In addition to his work at Columbus Aesthetic & Plastic Surgery, Wakelin serves on the Clinical Faculty of The Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health, where he received his medical degree and now teaches residents and medical students. From this dual vantage point, Wakelin can see the future of plastic and aesthetic surgery is very bright. “Ongoing advances in technology and our understanding of healing continue to evolve,” he says. “This allows us to continually find new and innovative techniques that provide long-lasting, natural results, reduce recovery and scarring, and have even better control of outcomes.”

To most, cardiology is medicine for the heart; to Dr. Manmohan Katapadi and the staff at Ohio Heart Group, cardiology is also medicine with heart. “You cannot heal the heart without another heart being there to mend it,” Katapadi says. “Medicine cannot be replaced with computers. You need human touch.” This approach to heart health is practiced by everyone at each of Ohio Heart Group’s four offices, from the receptionist to Katapadi himself, he says. “All we want to do is get them better and support them psychologically during the process.”

82

Columbus Monthly AUGUST 2020

Providing holistic help is the reason Katapadi pursued a career in medicine, he says. “I always wanted to take care of people or help people, and there’s no other field for that like medicine.” After a brief stint as a family primary care physician in Mansfield, he narrowed his focus to cardiology. “It’s a well-developed science and unlike many other parts of medicine, where you can make a diagnosis … but there’s not enough treatment available,” he says. “Cardiology is a well-studied science of medicine where we can actually prevent issues and help people to a great extent.”

Even in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, Katapadi and his team are using technologies like video visits and Bluetooth-enabled monitoring devices to ensure that patients still receive quality care and a sense of connection, even when physical visits aren’t possible. Thanks to this telemedicine approach, Katapadi says, “we can work closely with our patients to manage their cardiac needs while keeping them safe at home and removing the sense of isolation they often feel.”

AKAS “A.J.” JAIN, M.D. Dr. Akas “A.J.” Jain is committed to delivering compassionate care and excellent outcomes for his patients at Reproductive Gynecology & Infertility (RGI) in Westerville. “Every patient should be able to fulfill their potential of having a family,” Jain says. “Sometimes this is easily accomplished with small interventions, and other times, the highest level of scientific and technological resources are required. However, one constant that must never be compromised is the unwavering dedication and commitment to achieving the best outcomes.” Fertility care involves a variety of treatments, but Jain feels the process is optimized by a personalized approach incor-

porating the specific needs of each couple. Accordingly, he conducts every consultation, ultrasound and procedure himself. One of the first questions he asks a new patient is, “How many children would you ideally like to have?” The answer will help create an individualized plan based on the couple’s issues and fertility potential. “Every couple has their own story and circumstances that have brought them to our office,” he says. “We pride ourselves on being the last stop on anyone’s quest to build their family.” While many factors contribute to a successful outcome, Jain feels RGI’s pregnancy rates are owed to outstanding laboratory techniques utilizing a prolific embryo culture and

preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) system to help select “normal” embryos. “Combined with an unfailing cryopreservation system, this allows us to confidently assist our patients in securing their future family through frozen embryos from just one IVF cycle,” Jain says. RGI’s services include the diagnosis and treatment of male and female infertility such as IVF, preimplantation genetic testing, elective and oncologic fertility preservation (egg and embryo freezing), egg donation, and LGBTQ family building. Jain enjoys participating in resident education and research with central Ohio’s three OB/GYN training programs and also serves as president of the Columbus OB/GYN Society.
