Proyecto para mejorar las ciencias y matemáticas en las escuelas públicas de Toledo Por Carla Soto El pasado lunes 19 de abril del 2010, La Universidad de Toledo anunció en la escuela preparatoria Woodward, el principio de una colaboración entre las escuelas públicas de Toledo y la Universidad de Toledo.

Entre los asistentes a esta conferencia de prensa el cual dió inicio a este proyecto, estaba el director de la escuela Emilio Ramírez y también reprensentates de la Universidad de Toledo.

La Universidad colabora y se unirá a la escuela pública de Toledo y la preparatoria Woodward, y juntos buscaran nuevos projectos y maneras para hacer que las material de ciencias y matemáticas mejoren en esta escuela.

El director de la escuela preparatoria el señor Ramírez dice estar muy contento porque este programa va a ayudar a mejorar el nivel académico de la escuela preparatoria Woodward, el cual tiene al rededor de 850 estudiante y el 10% de estos estudiantes de son latinos.

Este proyecto empezó con la primera donación a la Universidad de Toledo de $192,000 del departamento de Ohio de matemáticas y ciencias, con este dinero esperan mejorar la educación de los estudiantes y darle una mejor oportunidad para poderse acoplar al incremento avanzado de tecnología.

to know the candidates and to look at the character of the candidates,” she says of her desire to get out on the campaign trail and meet as many voters as possible. “People are capable of getting through the smokescreens. I want to educate people as to what the Court of Appeals does and why it is so important.”

The Court of Appeals, Cosme adds, is the court of last resort for most litigants since the Ohio Supreme Court exercises it’s own discretion as to what cases it will hear.

One of the issues that is so important as voters look at punching the ballot for the Court of Appeals, says Cosme, is for them to gain an appreciation for having diversity on the bench. She believes that her background, particularly given the current homogenous makeup of the appellate bench, will make an important difference in the judicial process.

“We need an exposure to other cultures and ideas,” she says. “The contribution that [each judge] brings to the caucus is critical and my experiences will bring something to that caucus” Those experiences include being part of a minority group as well as her childhood in Puerto Rico, to be sure, but they also include legal stints as a large corporate litigator, an advocate on behalf of impoverished children, and a representative for the rights of organized labor and its members.

Those experiences also include a family that includes two young sons – Roberto and Diegonisio.

Those combined experi-

ences, she believes, make her eminently qualified to serve on the Court of Appeals. Recently, President Obama appointed another woman of Puerto Rican background to the Supreme Court – Justice Sonia Sotomayor. What was Judge Cosme’s reaction when she heard the news?

“My parents were ecstatic and the island was celebrating,” recalls the judge. “But my first reaction was she must have been qualified – then I looked at the excitement.”

And how excited is she to be in her particular position – an appointment with an opportunity as an incumbent to prevail in November? Very excited indeed!

“There is much work to be done to serve the community,” she says of the prospect of being on the bench and serving the eight-county area that lies within the 6th District’s purview. “I can serve two full terms and still be in a position to serve elsewhere – if needed some place else.”

Knight Academy hosts Open Houses Toledo, Ohio: The Knight Academy, a co-ed charter school for students in grades 5-8, will host two spring open houses. Each open house will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28, 2010, and Wednesday, May 19, 2010. The open house will feature tours of the new facility, and admissions information also will be available.

The school is housed in a two-story building at 110 Arco Drive with nine classrooms on the main floor. A music room and cafeteria will be housed on the second

floor. The school moved into this new location in January.

It also features a separate gymnasium that will be used for physical education classes five days a week as well as athletic competitions.

The academy currently is enrolling students for next school year. Tom Baker, Knight Academy president, said that the added space available in the new building will support their plan to offer classes for students entering fifth grade beginning next school year.

The Knight Academy offers advanced courses in sci-

ence, language and technology, as well as an extended school day and school year.

Its mission is to provide a superior educational experience focusing on academic preparation, and character and physical development.

The Knight Academy will offer summer classes in several subject areas including math, science, reading, and Spanish. A martial arts program and athletic camps also will be offered. Tuition is $75 per class or camp. Interested families may register for summer camps by calling the school at 419-720-4444.

Nahua artist discusses his art at BGSU Latin American conference

By Alaina Buzas Bowling Green: Nahua artist Nicolás de Jesús said his career started when he began distinguishing colors as a child. Through a translator, Jesús described how, since then, creating art has been part of his everyday life.

“Art is just part of how one lives,” Jesús said.

“How am I not going to become a painter if that’s what I was fed?”

Jesús was the featured artist and a keynote speaker at Bowling Green State University’s 2 nd Annual Latin American and Latino/a Studies Conference on Monday, April 12, 2010.

According to Susana Peña (Ethnic Studies Department and ICS Latin American and Latino/a Studies Cluster Member): “This year’s conference included presentations by students from two colleges in Canada, and Oberlin College, as well as Bowling Green State University” and “collectively, they contribute to an understanding of the interdependencies, commanlities, and differences across the Américas.”

After the panel presentations and a reception, social anthropologist Dr. Martha García and Jesús presented keynote speeches on “Representations of Migration in Nahua Art”. Dr. García said it was her first time presenting her research in English.

Jesús, who is from the Nahua indigenous region in México, said creating art helps him relate not only to nature, but also to

the cultural and political events around him. According to Jesús, the function of art is to send a message.

“Art can help people see the realities of immigration,” Jesús said.

Jesús said the messages in art can help start conversations through different tastes and cultures, especially across border lines.

Jesús works mostly on papel amate, or bark paper. He said sometimes this causes an internal conflict, because he has a great respect for the earth but making art with papel amate is part of his culture.

With his more political pieces, Jesús paints on manta so the finished piece can be carried by activists.

“I have great satisfaction when I can capture social unrest in a piece of art and then when it can be used to solve the problem,” Jesús said.

Many of the issues Jesús paints about were discussed during the conference.

Seven panels were held throughout the day, covering everything from migration and language to music and politics.

During the “Migration, Language, and Latinos in the U.S.” panel, students from BGSU discussed borderland perspectives and the idea of the 1.5 generation. According to the panel, a member of the 1.5 generation was born into one culture but raised in another, potentially leading to identity crisis.

Francisco Cabanillas, Director of the Latin American and Latino/a Studies Cluster, which organized the event as part of the Institute for the Study of Culture and Society, said the day was a success.

“I hope people took home the hemispheric connections between Canada, the USA, and Latin America. Any issues are connected there,” Cabanillas said.

Next year, the event will be combined with the Ohio Latin Americanist Conference and hosted at BGSU.

Earth Day Clean-up planned for Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is hosting an Earth Day presentation and clean-up at Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve on Thursday, April 22, 2010, at 4 p.m. in Huron.

The public is invited to join Huron Daisy Scout troops 53 and 517 and Girl Scout Troop 318 as they learn about the importance of Ohio’s Great Lake, wetlands, environmental stewardship and Lake Erie’s connection to Earth Day prior to collecting litter on the preserve’s trails and beach.

Interested participants are asked to meet at the preserve’s kiosk on the west side of the parking lot.

The 463-acre Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve is one of the last remaining undeveloped stretches of coast on Lake Erie ’s south shore. The Erie County site is also Ohio ’s best example of a natural barrier beach, which is more than 1 mile long.

The preserve’s lush wet-

lands provide protection and habitat for a variety of plants and animals including 300 bird species – numbers are greatest in the spring and fall when migrating birds stop to rest before or after crossing Lake Erie . The preserve’s wetlands mark the eastern end of East Sandusky Bay .

Estefans open Miami home to Obama, stirring debate

By CHRISTINE ARMARIO, Associated Press Writer MIAMI, April 14, 2010 (AP): Cuban-born singer Gloria Estefan is taking on a new role: On Thursday, she and husband Emilio Estefan hosted President Barack Obama at their Miami Beach home for a Democratic National Committee fundraiser.

It’s a political act that has drawn both condemnation and admiration in this traditionally Republican community, where the younger generation has been trending more Democratic.

“They represented our community with much dignity and class throughout their entire career,” said Val Prieto, founder of the conservative Cuban-American blog, Babablu. Now, Prieto says, he’s disappointed.

“It just leaves a real bad taste in my mouth and a lot of the people in the community,” he said.

Some have dismissed her as a traitor to the Cuban cause.

Others praise her for grabbing the president’s ear on an issue that remains at the forefront of South Florida politics, five decades after the 1959 revolution.

Whatever the interpretation, they are the most famous Cuban-Americans to come out in support of a Democrat—an act that many say is emblematic of a community whose political orientations have been shifting.

“The fact that they’re openly engaging the Democratic president, I think, speaks to the shift that is taking place in the Cuban electorate itself,” said Fernand Amandi, executive vice president of Bendixen & Amandi, a public opinion research and consulting firm in Miami that has surveyed Cuban Americans.

A 2008 poll of 800 randomly selected Cuban-

Americans found that younger and more recent immigrants were less likely to be Republican than older generations: Among those 18 to 44, 42 percent identified as Republican, compared to 66 percent of those age 65 and older. A majority in the younger age bracket said they voted for Obama.

And while Latin pop singer Juanes’ recent “Peace Without Borders” concert in Havana drew attention to the most radical segments of the Cuban-American community who condemned the concert, another poll found that a majority had a favorable opinion of the event.

“The perception in the United States is that this is a monolithic community,” said Jaime Suchlicki, an expert on Cuban affairs at the University of Miami. “That is not accurate. This is a very diversified community.”

The Thursday fundraiser reflected a growing relationship between the couple and Obama. Gloria Estefan sang at the White House for a Latin musical heritage event.

Emilio Estefan was appointed by the president to a committee that will study a potential National Museum of the American Latino.

Freddy Balsera, a friend and Democratic consultant, said the Estefans are registered independents who voted for and support Obama. He noted that they also had good relationships with both previous Bush administrations.

The Estefans were both born in Cuba and together became musical luminaries, winning Grammy awards and fans across the U.S. with crossover hits like “Conga” and “Words Get in the Way,” in addition to helping the careers of other artists.

They were not available for comment on Wednesday, a representative said.

Effective Jan. 1, the Supreme Court adopted rules regarding the certification of foreign language and sign language interpreters used by Ohio courts.

Under the rules, applicants for certification will pay fees to the Interpreter Services Program when applying, training, and testing to be certified as court

interpreters. The deposited fees will be used to sustain the program and the certification system. Specifically, the money will be used to provide training and written exams and to pay language experts to grade oral exams.

Those applying to be certified must submit a nonrefundable application fee along with their application.

In addition, applicants must pay a fee to attend two orientation trainings given by the program. Ohio residents will pay a total of $175 (nonresidents $225) for the ap-

plication fee, written examination fee, and orientation training fee. Applicants who pass the written exam will pay a total of $300 (Ohio residents) or $350 (non-residents) to take the oral exam, which also covers additional training and grading.

Bruno Romero, manager of the Interpreter Services Program, said the certification will ensure that interpreters working in the courts meet the minimum standards of language fluency.

OBITUARIES RAFAEL RODRÍGUEZ Rafaél Rodríguez, 88, of Lorain, OH passed away Tuesday, April 13, 2010 in New Life Hospice Center of Saint Joseph, Lorain, following a lengthy illness. He was born September 10, 1922 in Caguas, Puerto Rico. He came to Lorain in 1978. Mr. Rodríguez worked a baker in Caguas. He enjoyed playing dominoes, cooking, singing and walking along the Lake Erie.

He will be dearly missed by his sons Celestino “Tino” Rodríguez of Lorain, and José Rafaél Rodríguez Jr. and Mario Orlando Rodríguez, both of Caguas, his daughters Carmen Gloria and Blanca Iri Rodríguez both of Caguas, grandchildren Javier and Steven Rodríguez of Lorain, Jessica Rodríguez of Fort Myers, Ive, Zory and Rebecca Rodríguez, all of Caguas, 17plus grandchildren and 8-plus great-grandchildren.

Toledo Diocese celebrates 100 years with Mass April 15, 2010: A Foundation Day Mass marked the 100th anniversary of the Diocese of Toledo at Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral in Toledo.

Bishop Leonard P. Blair was the principal celebrant for the Mass.

The priests of the diocese and several Archbishops and Bishops from across the country concelebranted the Mass.

Attending the Foundation Day Mass are representatives of the religious orders and their sponsored institutions in the diocese, ecumenical and inter-religious guests, political leaders, and representatives from the 128 parishes in the Diocese.

The Mass also featured the Toledo Diocesan Choir, the Central Catholic High School Gospel Choir, the Glass City

Brass Ensemble, and the Saint Joan of Arc Handbell Choir.

The Diocesan centenary celebration began on October 7, 2009 with the Season of Preparation. The Foundation Day Mass marks the beginning of the Season of Celebration, and the Season of Recommitment begins on October 8, 2010 with the centenary celebration concluding on April 15, 2011.

Health secretary addresses minority health issues

By MEGAN K. SCOTT, Associated Press Writer NEW YORK, April 14, 2010 (AP): Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said Wednesday that she is developing a national plan of action that would focus for the first time on reducing health care disparities between minority and white populations.

HHS has been writing reports for 25 years documenting the gap in health care services between white and minority communities, but there never has been an action plan to address the gap, she said in an address to the National Action Network convention.

“I’m here to say that’s going to end this year,” Sebelius said.

She said 1 in 3 U.S. Latinos and 1 in 5 AfricanAmericans do not have health insurance, adding that the National Institutes of Health also is looking into the issue.

The HHS also would be focusing on disseminating health care information through social networking and addressing childhood obesity, the secretary said.

Some of the changes the public can expect to see immediately under the new health care law is coverage for children up to age 26 and an end to insurance companies dropping patients in mid-treatment because they have reached their spending cap.

Ilario Estrada, the new president of the University of Toledo’s Latino Student Union, welcomes the LSU students of Bowling Green State University at their annual Olympic games between the LSU chapters on Sunday, April 18, 2010.

This year, the Olympics were at BGSU’s Intramural Fields. The sports included football, soccer, volleyball, and basketball, with the following winners: Flag football: 5-0 BGSU won; Soccer: 5-1 UT won; Basketball: 20-18 UT won; Volleyball: Game 1:25-19 BGSU won; Game 2: 25-22 UT won; Game 3: 15-14 BG won, and Game 4: 15-11 BGSU won.
