Una segunda agencia estatal ha declinado investigar la denuncia que acusa a la Comisión de Asuntos Hispano/Latinos de Ohio de influir inapropiadamente en los representantes estatales a nombre de los inmigrantes ilegales. La oficina legislativa del inspector general Tony Bledsoe recientemente rechazó la queja presentada en junio por el Instituto Ley de Reforma de Inmigración de Washington, D.C. Una parte de la queja fue hallada insustancial; Bledsoe dijo que carecía de jurisdicción para investigar otras dos. El grupo de inmigración inicialmente había presentado sus alegatos al Inspector General de Ohio, Thomas P. Charles. Pero Charles, también argumentando falta de jurisdicción la turnó al Comité Legislativo Conjunto de Ética, que Bledsoe encabeza.

El sitio web del grupo de Washington señala que existe “para proteger los derechos legales, privilegios y propiedad de los ciudadanos de Estados Unidos y sus comunidades de las lesiones y los daños causados por la inmigración ilegal”. Se quejó de que la comisión a cargo del Estado “violó la ley de Ohio, presionando activamente a la legislatura del estado para proporcionar un trato favorable a los extranjeros ilegales ignorando su condición de inmigrantes ilegales”. Florentina Staigers, abogada de Columbus y ex integrante de la Comisión Hispano/Latina, la calificó como “una queja de poca monta, sin fundamento a cargo de un grupo de odio”. Entre otras cosas, el reporte anual de la comisión dice que “estar en E.U. sin documentos no es crimen”, lo cual el instituto considera que es una manera de “persuadir a los legisladores a ignorar las leyes federales y dar a los inmigrantes ilegales beneficios públicos y privilegios disponibles para los ciudadanos de habla hispana”.

El pasado 17 de julio la agrupación Colombianos en Ohio celebró los 200 años de la independencia de Colombia. Este año marcó la sexta ocasión consecutiva en que la agrupación celebró la independencia de Colombia y este año lo hizo en grande. De acuerdo a los organizadores, se estimaba que alrededor de 600 personas atendieron la fiesta. Las festividades duraron de una a seis de la tarde en el patio de la escuela Worthington Park Elementary en Westerville, donde los asistentes, que atiborraron el estacionamiento de la escuela, pudieron disfrutar de comida típica de Colombia mientras los pequeños se divertían haciendo manualidades o jugando en los columpios. Al final de la fiesta también tuvieron la

Un inusual número de residentes del centro de Ohio con tosferina han avivado la preocupación sobre el potencial de una enfermedad grave y muerte en bebés y otros que son especialmente vulnerables. La tosferina o pertusis es una infección bacteriana caracterizada por accesos de tos algunas veces seguida de un “estertor” o jadeo ahogado. Se contagia a través de las gotitas respiratorias, que se pueden propagar fácilmente por la tos. Las infecciones pueden durar semanas o meses. Desde el lunes de la semana pasada, Salud Pública de Columbus y la Junta de Salud del Condado de Franklin habían confirmado 135

casos. En el mismo periodo del año pasado había 76. La Ciudad y los funcionarios del Condado de Salud saben de otros 89 casos sospechosos este año. Preocupados por la rara alza del verano, los funcionarios de salud alertaron a los médicos a estar atentos ante la tosferina y están pidiendo que los niños mayores y adultos reciban dosis de refuerzo para proteger contra la infección y la transmisión a los bebés. La inmunización es especialmente importante para los padres y otras personas que interactúan con los infantes, dijo el Dr. Mysheika LeMaile-Williams, director médico de la ciudad. Aunque la mayoría de los estadounidenses fueron vacunados contra la tosferina en la infancia, la protección disminuye a

OSU grad to march with TBDBITL after 90-pound loss

Daniel Joy is a 26-year-old music teacher and assistant high school band director. As is typical for many people, his transition from college student to the working world impacted his eating and his weight. His commitment to marching band involves long hours and eating on the run. Even at his young age, it did not take long for poor eating habits to translate into a significant weight gain. The domino effect continued when his extra weight started to impact his blood pressure. The alarm went off when Daniel’s doctor told him he needed medication to reduce his blood pressure. On New Year’s Eve 2009, Daniel realized that he was, once again, resolving to lose weight in the new year. He decided this year’s resolution would be never to resolve to lose
