From the President Over the past 60 years, CSU has played a critical role in recognizing and retaining outstanding talent for the region. We have helped people find jobs and careers. Because of Columbus State University and our focus of meeting the needs of the industries, businesses, and economic development of this area, we have been able to not only provide the region with a very well-educated workforce, but we’ve also been able to graduate well-educated citizens — the kind of folks that are absolutely necessary to continuing moving our community forward, to encourage continued advancement, enhancement, and economic development. We change lives. We change families. We change communities. Over the past 60 years, we have built a place where dreamers become doers, where commonplace becomes extraordinary, where goals become achievements. We could not have reached this level of excellence in education without the impact of our investors, our partners, and our champions for support. This publication is a testament to what we can accomplish together as we collaborate and invest in the vision for a more prosperous university. The First Choice Comprehensive Campaign began in 2012 with ideas for what Columbus State University could become. We embarked on a journey of dreaming bigger, expanding our reach further, and inspiring students in new ways. We began with a goal of $105 million in capital projects, program support, and other opportunities. Now, as we close the campaign with $120 million in cash, pledges, planned gifts, property and related income, we reflect on CSU’s growth and success and what that has meant for the community. Our greatest achievement is the one we share with those named in this book. Every individual, foundation, and corporation saw potential in the mission to make CSU a First Choice institution. A First Choice for discerning students. A First Choice for outstanding faculty. A First Choice for alumni, friends and partners looking to invest in excellence. Thank you to all of our partners, investors, friends and fans. The gifts we received throughout the First Choice Comprehensive Campaign have made a transformational impact on our campus and the Columbus community. And I can’t wait to see what we create together in the future!

‘Home is Where the Art is’ creates an experience for local artists and students to help guide and assist individuals in the homeless community to create their own unique pieces of art. The program is a collaboration with the Chattahoochee Valley Jail Ministries, Safe-House at Rose Hill United Methodist Church and the Bo Bartlett Center.
The ‘Art Makes You Smart!’ program takes art and artists into select Muscogee County Schools teaching the basic principles of art. The program’s goal is to foster critical thinking, encourage human empathy and inspire creativity. AMYS is a Partners in Education, Partners at Large Program collaboration with the Columbus Chamber of Commerce and the students of the Muscogee County School District.
THE BO BARTLETT CENTER: ENRICHING THE COMMUNITY
T
he Bo Bartlett Center had been a dream for more than 15 years, starting under CSU President emeritus Frank Brown, before it officially opened on January 18, 2018. It was announced in 2012 by then-CSU President Tim Mescon and started with a gift from Bartlett and his wife, Betsy Eby, also an artist. Bartlett’s sister, Sandy Scarborough, and her husband, Otis Scarborough, have donated parts of their extensive collection to the center. The Bartlett Center construction was a $6.5 million project, all coming from private funds raised in the First Choice Comprehensive Campaign. Though the center bears his name, Bartlett said the center

belongs to others in theory and practice. “It’s not my center, it’s your center; it’s Columbus’ center, it’s the South’s center and it’s America’s center,” Bartlett shared. But the center has Bartlett’s flair as dozens of his works hang on the walls from the front to the back of the 18,425 square foot interactive gallery space. The center is on the top floor of the Corn Center for the Visual Arts at the base of the Dillingham Bridge. In addition to showing Bartlett’s paintings, the Bo Bartlett Center collaborates with local organizations to introduce art-making experiences to the community.
‘ARTISTIC ABILITY’ is an ongoing art based program held in collaboration with New Horizons Behavioral Health. Through this ongoing partnership, trained volunteers introduce creativity to adults with disabilities through hands-on projects.
The Bo Bartlett Center hosts two Masterclasses each year and invites the community to join artists for a three-day workshop to learn from visiting artists.

FRANK D. BROWN HALL: HONORING A LEGACY
O
ne cannot tell the story of Columbus State University’s unparalleled growth and success through the First Choice Comprehensive Campaign without sharing the story of Frank D. Brown Hall, a state-of-the-art teaching and research facility located in the heart of Uptown Columbus. The 90,000 square-foot, $27 million building serves as the home for most of CSU’s education programs and the School of Nursing. It was named in honor of CSU’s third president, Frank D. Brown, who was instrumental in the development of CSU’s RiverPark campus and in the revitalization of Uptown Columbus. “Dr. Brown, and those people and partnerships he cultivated, are largely to credit for the transformation [in Uptown Columbus],” said CSU President Chris Markwood. “That’s why it is so fitting to have this building, now the ‘front door’ to CSU’s RiverPark campus, bear the name of CSU’s third President, Frank D. Brown.” Equipped with state-of-the-art simulation labs, a tiered 150-seat classroom and group learning spaces, Frank D. Brown Hall extends CSU’s downtown footprint to approximately one million square feet of space. In the last decade, more than $125 million has been invested in Uptown Columbus by, or on behalf of, CSU. The construction of Frank D. Brown Hall spurred the redevelopment of the 1200 block of Broadway and brought an additional 1,800 students, faculty, and staff to the area by the Spring of 2017.

PEZOLD ENDOWMENT FOR KEYBOARD STUDIOS: AN UNPRECEDENTED INVESTMENT
I
n July 2014, one of the largest gifts in Columbus State University history funded the named Jack and JoRhee Pezold Division of Keyboard Studies in CSU’s Schwob School of Music. The endowment from the Columbus couple funds student scholarships, graduate assistantships and other special programs and initiatives that aim to enhance the piano and organ areas of the Schwob School. ”The Pezold’s generosity is indicative of the amazing support the Schwob School has received from the community since its establishment in 1969,” said Rex Whiddon, Senior Associate Vice President for Leadership Philanthropy and Strategic Initiatives. “Vying for a top tier music program of international distinction in a hyper-competitive marketplace requires substantial funding. This gift is transformation-

al and will help ensure the Schwob School of Music will continue to thrive and compete successfully in the top echelon of music schools worldwide.” Jack Pezold, whose family’s Pezold Management Co. operates 20 Columbus-area McDonald’s and oversees a wide range of other investments, said the keyboard division gift “evolved” from their sponsorship of Gusto!, an annual benefit the Schwob School of Music presents at the National Infantry Museum each year. Their sponsorship included the establishment of a new piano scholarship in JoRhee’s name. JoRhee added: “We believe we have the opportunity and responsibility to help develop the talent of those students who would not, otherwise, have the resources to fully achieve their God-given musical potential. As God has blessed us, it is our desire to bless talented students from this region and beyond.”

ver the last two decades, Synovus has contributed or pledged more than $6 million to Columbus State University. The company’s leaders have led recent capital campaigns, and their support has gone directly to help women’s athletics, student scholarships, the music program, the TSYS Department of Computer Science and the university’s financial success program. Synovus has also been a strong supporter of CSU internships, hired CSU graduates, and participated in community development efforts. “The decades-long partnership between Synovus and Columbus State has been mutually beneficial to our company and the university and, even more important, tremendously fruitful for the Chattahoochee Valley,” said Kessel Stelling, Synovus Chairman and CEO, and Member of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. “We are grateful for our relationship with CSU and honored to be recognized with this renaming.” Synovus executives have individually provided valuable support to CSU, serving in leadership roles and providing the university with valuable guidance, wisdom, and involvement. Jimmy Yancey, a CSU alumnus who served as Syn-
ovus president and chairman of the board, chaired CSU’s Investment in People campaign that ended in 2005 with more than $100 million raised and helped create CSU’s RiverPark campus. James H. Blanchard, who served as chairman and CEO of Synovus for more than 35 years, created the annual Jim Blanchard Leadership Forum at CSU, which has become one of the most impressive gatherings of leaders in the nation. To commemorate the crucial role that Synovus has played in CSU’s growth and success, on November 1, 2018, CSU’s Center for Commerce and Technology was officially renamed the Synovus Center of Commerce and Technology. “The naming is recognition of the long role that Synovus has had in supporting and shaping both the community of Columbus and the campus and curriculum of Columbus State University,” President Chris Markwood shared during the renaming ceremony. “It is especially appropriate that the highly-respected Synovus name be tied to the home of our innovative business and computer science programs, which Synovus has so generously supported.”

TSYS: PARTNERS IN TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENT
T
SYS, the Columbus-based credit card and payment processor, donated $5 million to Columbus State University in 2015 - the largest contribution ever given to CSU’s Turner College of Business. CSU was one of seven institutions selected in January of 2015 to develop the University System of Georgia’s capabilities in information technology and cybersecurity and increase the number of qualified graduates for those careers. “TSYS has been proud to partner with CSU through the years in a variety of valuable initiatives, including the naming of the TSYS School of Computer Science in 2002,” CSU graduate Troy Woods, the chairman, president and chief executive officer of TSYS, said. “The establishment of the Cybersecurity Center as well as the Endowment for Excellence represent the next step in TSYS’ partnership with CSU, and we look forward to seeing the fruit of this important investment in our community, our company and the financial services industry.” On October 29, 2017, Columbus State University dedicated the TSYS Center for Cybersecurity, celebrating another chapter in the partnership between the university and the electronic payments processor – and demonstrating their commitment to developing and training employees for such an essential career field. Regarding CSU’s partnership with TSYS, CSU President Chris Markwood said, “When the company was first starting to flourish, they had such a need for computer programmers that they considered moving their headquarters out of Columbus so they would have easier access to the talent they craved,” Markwood said. “However, Columbus State University stepped in and worked with them to develop a partnership program that allowed CSU to tailor our computer science courses so we train the workers to the exact requirements that TSYS needed. “I’m told there are now more than 1,000 Columbus State University alumni who have worked at TSYS at one time or another (including CEO Troy Woods). And now, of course, TSYS is the global leader in electronic payments, with a presence in more than 80 countries on five continents.” Markwood also thanked TSYS for “the trust you have placed in us.” While thanking the folks who made this center possible, Linda Hadley, dean of CSU’s Turner College of Business, said, “We realize how fortunate we are, but we also realize that we have a lot to live up to.”

THE WALDEN FAMILY: INVESTING IN CHAMPIONS
C
olumbus State officially opened the John W. Walden Tennis Center with a bang in 2017. The state-of-the-art complex was dedicated through a special ceremony on September 19, 2017, to recognize the generous donation made by Johnny and Sally Walden in honor of John W. Walden, Johnny’s father. The complex features 12 hard courts primarily used by the CSU tennis program equipped with PlaySight technology allowing matches to be streamed online and watched all across the world. The facility was one of 12 nationally recognized by the United States Tennis Association (UTSA) as part of its Outstanding Facility Awards program. “We are forever grateful to the Walden Family, and the positive impact they have had on the CSU athletic program and the lives of CSU student-athletes, over many years,” said Todd Reeser, CSU Director of Athletics. “The naming of this beautiful facility in honor of Mr. Walden’s father is meaningful to all in the Cougar family.”
20 | COLUMBUS STATE UNIVERSITY
“I have admired Mr. Walden and his family for a long time,” head tennis coach Evan Isaacs added. “He has always had a keen interest in our program and always wanted the best for our players. CSU Tennis would not have the success on the court and in the classroom without Mr. Walden’s continuous efforts to help make us the best we can be on a daily basis. “Words or any grand gesture would not do justice for what Mr. Walden has done for me and the CSU Tennis program. I hope that he and his family know that their contribution to our program is life changing for these student-athletes.” Isaacs’s statement would ring true for the Cougars as the men’s tennis team brought home CSU’s first national championship in May 2018. The team’s banner year closed out with 16 consecutive victories, the program’s second consecutive sweep of the PBC regular season and tournament championships, and the eighth team NCAA title won in Columbus State athletic history.

WAYNE STARKS: EMPOWERING ENTREPRENEURS AND LEADERS IN INNOVATION
L
ocal businessman Wayne Starks is not a graduate of Columbus State University, but he may know better than most about what CSU and its students can do. “Coming from the private sector and in human resources, I’ve had the pleasure of hiring a lot of CSU graduates,” said Starks, a business owner, angel investor and entrepreneur. “Firsthand, I’ve seen the caliber of talent that comes out of CSU. It’s impressive.” Starks’ admiration for CSU cultivating a workforce of impactful business professionals inspired him to give $250,000 to establish the Wayne and Stella Starks Scholarship Endowment within the university’s D. Abbott Turner College of Business. “The college did an awful lot for my wife and me, and this was a way to give back,” he said. “There’s no comparison to what the college was back then to the university that’s there today. The quality of the education there — you cannot beat it. We thought it would be fair to give back and maybe help some other students who might one day contribute to the community.”
22 | COLUMBUS STATE UNIVERSITY
The scholarship assists undergraduate students pursuing degrees in business with preference for the entrepreneurship and human resources management tracks. “My philosophy: The best gift I can give to my kids and grandkids is to show them that giving makes a difference,” Starks said, “and if I’m going to talk the talk, I have to walk the walk.” Originally from White House, Tennessee, Starks earned an associate of arts degree from Cumberland University and a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Middle Tennessee State University. Before settling in Columbus and taking on active roles in local medical staffing and real estate management ventures between Georgia and Alabama, he served as a human resources director for various Fortune 100 and 500 companies. “First and foremost, I want to help those who want to work hard and go to school,” he said. “This scholarship is an opportunity to attract those who may not have considered CSU and is a way to ensure the university continues to produce great employees.”

Shannon Society The Shannon Society recognizes individuals, foundations, and other entities who have established endowed funds for scholarships, faculty chairs, academic units, and programs or initiatives that enhance and support excellence at Columbus State University. In 1958, Columbus College opened its doors to 265 students in a building that originally housed the Shannon Hosiery Mill.
