“15 Minutes City” Urban Design for Taihu, China (awarded)

About Me

ComplexCity

Architecture is the art of bringing people together. It strengthens community, rather than wanting them off from one another. It is for the people. In 2015, I came to Melbourne from Malaysia to experience a city full of arts and culture that inspired and shaped my ideas on approaching architecture in various ways. This portfolio reflects my architectural journey dating from 2016. With the knowledge and course provided by the university, I have the chance to work with different scales, such as small-scale community centres, medium-scale residential apartments, to large-scale urban planning for a municipal region in China. Through my previous works, I had equipped myself with various skills such as time management and group dynamics that are useful for architectural practice. Meanwhile, I am skillful with tools and software like Revit, Rhinoceros, Grasshopper, Maya, Adobe Suite, Keyshot, V-ray, and Octane Rendering. I am recently a Master of Architecture graduate from RMIT University, seeing myself involved in a practice architecture design team and potentially an Associate Architect within ten years.

Supervisor: Dr John Doyle Year/Level: Year 5/Level 10 (Individual) Folio Link : https://issuu.com/adapt-n

Software: Rhinoceros, Grasshopper, Octane Render. (adapt)N speculates the adaptivity of the low rise of our city. Unpredictable, disruptive events that create medium to long term challenges for our city gives value to this project. Be it public health, economic, environmental shocks that put our city out of its relevance and affected its capability to be used at its maximum potential. These are the uncertain challenges that this project aims to address. This project questions existing planning law and permitting processes that limit the city to the idea of adaptation. It proposes converting our city block into mixed-use corporate ownership. Shifting procurement processes, allowing the city to be viable of adaptation over time. (adapt)N rethinks the relationship between space, forms and functions. It is an ethically environmental, economical and architectural proposition.

SUPERTIGHTEST Series Series ofof 3 Tight Projects in Brunswick Studio Leader: Professor Graham Crist & Thomas Muratore (Shortlisted) Year/Level: Year 4/Level 7 (Individual) Studio Leader: Professor Graham Crist & Thomas Muratore Year/Level: Year 4/Level 7 (Individual)

Software: Rhinoceros, Grasshopper. This project affirms the upper side of hyperdensity, consolidation, and smallness, the dumbest but most powerful architect’s tools - distributing space. It demonstrates the role of design in radically improving our footprint. The projects are tested in 3 leftover areas located around the Brunswick Design District in the City of Moreland. The project considered collapsing, shrinking needs of new cities and miniatures programs - shrinking gallery/ offices/schools/house etc., investigating architectural design proposition while shrinking these building types.

“15 Minutes City” Urban Design for Taihu, China (Awarded)

Studio Leader: Dr John Doyle Year/Level: Year 4/Level 8 (Group of 4)

Video Link : https://youtu.be/qa-dHQCato0 Group Involvement: Concept Design, Masterplanning, Data Scraping Form Modelling, Scripting, Post-Processing. Software: Rhinoceros, Grasshopper. China is urbanising rapidly, and the Taihu region is no exception, and we expect the population in the region to double by 2050. The key focus of our proposal is to support the future growth of this region as one interconnected and overlapping city. Looking through a lens of increased connectivity and mobility with a potential upside of environmental sustainability and reduced carbon footprint of the region’s residents by limiting travel times to amenities and other cities. By 2050 essential services and amenities will be accessible within a 15-minute radius. This scenario will explore the effects through the relationship between urban density, amenities, and travel distances through ideas of sharing and exchange, to optimise the spatial organisation of the urban environment to accommodate the needs of the population in 2050.

Elective Leader: Professor Alisa Andrasek Year/Level: Year 4/Level 8 (Group of 4) Video Link : https://youtu.be/PCvfvCkQ1n4

Group Involvement: Masterplanning, Form Modelling, AI Stimulation, Rendering, Post-Processing. Software: Rhinoceros, Grasshopper, Enscape Render.

DigitalFUTURES WORLD ARCHITECTS UNITE 2020

This elective was run as an intensive 10 day workshop and as a part of Digital Futures global event: https://www.digitalfutures.world/ - initiated by Tongji University Shanghai and bringing together architects from all over the globe. It was one of the most exciting events of the year in the world of architecture, with contributions by Peter Eisenman, Thom Mayne, Wolf Prix, Achim Menges, Patrik Schumacher, Philippe Block, Matias del Campo, Yansong Ma, Nader Tehrani, Meejin Yoon, Philip Beesley, Mette Thomsen, Gilles Retsin, Archi-Union, UN Studio, Gensler, SOM, KPF, ZHA and many others.

This project addressed design for high-density cities based on principles of complexity. In a world rapidly converted into information, future cities and buildings will be characterized by enhanced resilience, plasticity, and malleability of complex interrelated systems. Increased designability within complex ecologies will allow for designs of unprecedented nature, complexity and scale.

Workflow is structured as truly human-machine collaboration, with algorithms pre-trained to shortcut complex parts of the algorithmic design process that is more natural to machines. Humans are then freed to work on intuitive design synthesis and novel speculative ideas both visually and in terms of a vision for what cities of tomorrow (or indeed already today) might become. It is an opportunity to engage with such an enhanced and accelerated design process rapidly becoming a part of contemporary architectural practice.

PAINTERLY FORM “Growth” St Kilda Community Centre

Studio Leader: Professor Roland Snooks & Marc Gibson Year/Level: Year 1/Level 2 (Group of 2)

Group Involvement: Form Sculpting, Algorithmic Spawning, Rendering, Post-Processing. Software: Rhinoceros, Grasshopper, Processing, Maya, Zbrush, Keyshot Render. This studio explores the design of intricate forms, their atmospheric effects and strange qualities. We explored the design of strange objects through the interaction of selforganisational and gestural operations. These experiments attempt to blur the relationship between the complex order that is generated through algorithmic processes of selforganisation and the direct operation of the hand. These two types of operation are placed within a feedback loop where each manipulates and reforms the other. This is an attempt to tease out the qualities of distinctly different processes and explore the blurring of recognition that their interaction creates.

The studio also explored forms that are becoming possible with emerging building-scale 3D printing in an attempt to articulate what the forms of 3D printed architecture might be and how these could be a radical departure from current architectural form-making. Within this context the studio is developing a synthetic design process that combines emergent algorithmic approaches, which is the logic of 3D printing and painterly operations to create a strange hybrid. Architectural space is then explored and studied in the generated form, ie top down design process.

MARCHSTUDIO STUDIO

“Breathe” North Melbourne Residential Apartment Studio Leader: MARCH Studio, Rodney Eggleston & Julian Canterbury Year/Level: Year 2/Level 3 (Individual)

Software: Rhinoceros, Octane Render. A practice based studio, designing apartments in North Melbourne on the site of March Studio inspired by automobile parts. Australia’s redundant automotive industry will form the basis of research. The project is challenged to revive an otherwise dying industry by choosing a manufacturing technique and designing a façade or structural system around the chosen technique. The results is then tested on a multi residential development. Design a buildable and an affordable housing development using the March Studio office as a site which responds to existing conditions (the heritage of the existing 1970’s Brutalist building) as well as to perform research planning and other regulatory requirements. The schemes embodied community ethics, stack up economically and result in magnificent architecture.
