Location: Austin, Texas. Duration: Approximately six years . Staff: Myself, plus one assistant. Education: I have a Bachelor of Journalism in Photojournalism from the University of Texas. w here I studied under Dennis Darling. I also learned a tremendous amount abo ut photogra phy working as Will van Overbeek's studio manager and assistant for five yea rs. Cultural Influences: Tom Waits, Sally Mann, Julie Speed, Pavement, James Dickey, the Palace Brothers, Louise Gluck, Woody Allen, Keith Carter, Buster Keaton, Built To Spill, Lars von Trier. Elvis Costello, Bruce Davidson, Doc Watson, E. Annie Proulx, Ell a Fitzgerald, Cameron Bernard and many others ... Environment: My work is mostly shot on location using ambie nt light or minimal lighting . However, I also enjoy shooting in my studio, which has quite a history attached to it. In the early 1900s, my space was a beauty parlor for women from the " red light" district, who would gather to swap sto ries and acquaint themselves with outlaws at the end of Austin's original streetcar line. In the late 1960s, the building served as a recording stud io for musicians who were influentia l in the Austin music scene . Philosophy: I like to observe my subjects doing what comes naturally, and capt ure an interesting gesture or aspect of their persona on film. Everyone has a story to tell, both verbally and visually. For me, the best part of being a photographer is meeting people who lead vastly different lives from my own, and connecting with them for a brief period of time.
