Leslie Williamson
Location: San Francisco. California. Duration: 5 years. Staff: 1. Education: B.F.A.. Art Center. Pasadena. Cultural Influences: Lucian Freud, Vilhelm Hammershoi. empty rooms. modern dance. Francis Bacon (although his paintings disturb me terribly), Salton Sea. color (especially unusual color combinations ... ! am currently enthralled with rust and lavender). modern architecture. leather floors. World of Interiors magazine. clothing from all periods, Poul Kjaerholm, the Bouroullec brothers. Alberto and Diego Giacometti. the desert. any body of water. Scandinavian design from 1930- 1970, places steeped in history, the Southern U.S. (a lthough I've never been there) , men who wear socks with sandals. Nikolai Makarov. Francesco Clemente. music of all kinds. foreign lands, my family, my friends and especially my memories of my childhood (mainly during the 1970s and early 1980s) . The older I get. the more I realize that the way I see is completely tied up in my childhood references. Environment: I shoot entirely on location . I much prefer finding an interesting place with its own flavor to mix into the image. Usually the personality of a location inspires the direction an image takes. especially in regard to portraits. On a few occasions a location has so inspired me. that I developed an entire shoot around it. I adore places that reek of a past. but I can find something interesting absolutely anywhere. Another vital part of my work is printing the final images myself. I am very particular about my color palette. The colors of an image can affect the viewer just as much as the subject matter. I believe color transforms an image from a mere snapshot. to something that the viewer responds to on a more emotional level.

Philosophy: Find beauty in all things. Celebrate anything out of the ordinary. Try to leave things better than when you arrived. Adopt a stray (be it animal. vegetable or mineral) .
