The design offices of Robert Miles Runyan & Associates are located in the Playa del Rey section of the Los Angeles area, near the Marina. They occupy the second floor of a two-story building shaped like a truncated wedge (floor plan is shown on the following page). The designers and production artists work in an open space plan. In the center is a general conference room. Sliding glass doors on two sides of the conference room can be closed if conversational privacy is required. The functional aspects of the handsome office design are evident on the plan, but less so to the visitor who may be more impressed (if not overpowered) by the display of thousands of paintings, prints, posters, sculpture, antiques, objects d'art and memorabilia that are displayed in the offices. Runyan has long been a collector extraordinaire. Below are two views of the entrance hall: facing east toward the entrance and facing west to the reception area that backs the east wall of the conference room. Right: views of Runyan's office. Shunning the usual desk or table, he normally conducts his business from a couch against the south wall of his office. On either side of the couch are two of four rare panels of Alphonse Mucha's "Four Seasons:' part of a unique collection of Art Nouveau, mostly acquired before its rise to popularity fifteen years ago. With Bob in the office are John Halff, consultant, and Sandra Lewis, secretary. At lower right is an alcove in the north wall of the office featuring , among other objects, two pieces from his collection of restored coin-operated gasoline pumps. The ceiling had to be opened to cope with the height. Many of the objects on display reflect his personal interest in automobiles and racing cars.

Joe Baraban

Clowns have always fascinated Baraban . Several years ago, with a possible book in mind, he got perm ission from Ringling Brothers to shoot a photo essay on the clowns . Last fall , Texas Monthly expressed an interest in the subject. The circus preferred that he shoot again (many of the young clowns had moved on to acting or other careers) and they arranged for Joe to spend a week with their unit in Rochester. With this much time backstage, he became very friendly with the group, and Joe and his assistant , Steve Brady, in full clown makeup, appeared in two performances. One of the routines was the impossible number of clowns in a small auto, a feat accomplished basically " by a collective holding of breath :' Sybil Broyles, design director; Jim Darilek, art director.

Vancouver's dramatic setting makes it the most magnificent of all West Coast cities. Its location as Canadian seaport to the Pacific Rim and channel point for a vast northern region of natural resources- timber, minerals, natural gas, and fish- makes it the economic center of Western Canada. The city is home to a number of large clients of international ~haracter. A current phenomenon is that of Canadian property development firms searching for investment south of the border. The Frog lists a number of these firms as clients.

"'Vancouver is an exciting metropolis and I can work internationally from here. I just got back from Tulsa and work on a development project there . I recently had some time in Rome on a project that generated from Vancouver." In 1978 Errol was appointed a member of the Royal Canadian Academy, the highest honor the nation can bestow. He now adds RCA to his signature. The election came from the body of Members of the Academy of Art upon review of a portfolio of his work in painting, prints, and design. Becoming an Academician is akin to gaining a Knighthood in England and now Errol wears a small white pin with a simple "A" in the lapel of his decorated jumpsuit.
