Limited Budgets
Left: Part of a new identity program for Emmanuel College. Founded in 1919, Emmanuel College is the oldest private, liberal arts Catholic College for women in New England, serving 1,500 students from 45 countries. People who know about Emmanuel recognize it for the quality of its undergraduate liberal arts degree programs for women as well as its graduate and professional programs for women and men . However, the number of people familiar with the college has been limited. With increased competition among colleges and universities, it was critical that the college raise its profile and reshape its institutional identity with a variety of audiences worldwide . After compiling background information from the President's Office, Undergraduate Admissions, the Center for Adult Studies and Alumnae Relations and Development, a program was developed consisting of an updated school seal , color palette, typography and new grid systems for all school materials. Robert Beerman, art director/ designer; Hania Khuri , designer; Sametz Blackstone Associates (Boston), design firm. Boxes and bags for the Urban Outfitters retail stores. Redesigned every 1.5 years the current program is the first ever two-color design; one-color designs are the norm. Black is a constant color on all packages and the second color alternates within a five-color palette. Boxes and bags are various sizes and usually printed on coated paperboard but this time plastic was used for the bags which saved a considerable amount of money and still allowed the use of two colors. Howard Brown, art director; Howard Brown/Mike Calkins, designers; Joseph Mulligan, photographer; Urban Outfitters (Philadelphia), in -house design department. This page: Invitation to the open house of the Arizona Public Service (APS) Environmental Showcase Home. The showhouse was built using recycled and environmentally friendly materials and the latest in energy conservation technologies. APS needed an invitation for the open house that reflected the image of design for the environment. The mailing box was die-cut from recycled stock and printed with soybased inks and the invitation was printed on used newspaper. The recipients of the invitation were encouraged to bring the invitation to the open house to put in a recycling bin . Art Lofgreen, art director; Art Lofgreen/Rodd Whitney, designers; Steve Hutchinson, writer; Smit Ghormley Lofgreen Design (Phoenix), design firm. Poster for Fossil Blue, a series of sport watches with the key attributes of water resistance and durability. An old illustrated image of an industrial diver was used to communicate key qualities and fit in with Fossil's existing brand imagery. "The cost of a 4-color poster on uncoated stock had already been figured into the budget," said designer Bill Morgan, " but we didn't feel that the approach met with our desired result . We wanted to run a metallic ink on coated stock to reinforce the industrial theme. So, in order to stay within our budget, and achieve the effect we wanted, we dry-trapped the metallic ink and printed a standard ink monotone of the diver over the dried metallic ink. This created an overall metallic effect normally not achieved without the use of two metallic inks. And, cutting the cost of printing allowed us to use the coated stock we preferred." Tim Hale, art director; Bill Morgan, writer; Fossil Inc. (Richardson, Texas) , in-house design firm.
