Great Ideas on Limited Budgets

Promotional poster for Eskimoka Joe, an ice cream-coffee drink made at The Coffee Plantation, a well-known, well-loved series of coffee houses in the Phoenix, Arizona area. Coffee is shipped into the United States in large burlap bags from all over the world and the bags frequently have country or plantation insignia. "The poster was designed to reflect this aspect of the store's identity (the image is of then-owner, Joe Johnston)." says co-designer Leslie Link. "After exploring various avenues we decided to print the poster on the used burlap bags and although we had never used the medium, we felt strongly that it would be the best way to emphasize the character and originality of the store. Finding enough bags to print on became an obstacle as did searching for a printer willing to print on burlap. Our printer, Custom Screenprint, allowed us to experiment on press to make sure that everything read well and ink coverage remained consistent ." Christine Ray/Joe Ray, art directors; Christine Ray, designer; Frank Ybarra, illustrator; Estudio Ray (Scottsdale, AZ) design firm. Promotional poster for Legacy 1997 a tri-annual month-long event, celebrating Women's History Month in Grand Rapids, Michigan, during which various organizations and institutions join together to present a citywide celebration that honors women, past and present. Despite the fact that the production budget for this project was extremely small, it was important that the poster (and all other parts of the campaign) appeal to as many ages and races of women as possible. Designer Leslie Black wanted art that would reproduce well at 600 dpi so it would look good when photocopied or printed conventionally; she also wanted a piece that was flexible and reproduced well in one color so it would be easier to obtain coverage in the local press. The theme "building a lasting legacy" was already established and because there were so many events going on throughout the city, the calendar became a focal point. Illustrator Yolanda Gonzalez depicted different women in each of the squares and handlettering was used to make the piece feel grass roots. A local paper merchant, Central Michigan Paper Company of Grand Rapids, donated all the paper and printing was done at cost by Commercial Printing; 20,000 copies of the poster were printed and placed in various establishments around town and at participating organizations.
