ational cuisines are constantly evolving, and Italian cuisine is no exception. Although many bakers in small-town Italy continue to make only traditional loaves, others have introduced new tastes into this lt:tlian staple. Some arc "special" because, for Italians, they arc more than just everyday breads. One of those exceptional breads is pn11t nll'11t•a. Ir is a loaf that always brings back memories of my F.uhcr. He was a furnin1rc maker and labored alongside his own father in our fomily shop, which made handcrafted violins and other musical instruments as well. Sometimes I would join my father on his walk to Brescia to buy wood for his work. On the way home I was always tired, and we would stop at a small pn11ifirio where he bought me freshly baked raisin bread. P.wt
al/'11"" was considered a luxury at the time (and sriU is because of the high cost of raisins in Italy) and it was my reward for walking such a long distance. Some of these recipes arc traditional celebratory loa"es, such as the Lombardiai1 Christmas pn11tt1011t and the dove-shaped tolo111b. pnsq11ak. Others 1T0ecr the interest in breads that use ingredients only recently inrrodue<d into rhe kitchens of Italian bakers. Still others are II Forn:iio fuvorires - breads th:.ir Jrc requested ti me and again by our customers.

1950 North Seminary is a single family house, built at the turn of the century, when this part of Chicago was still open fields and farmland. Perhaps buffalo roamed through here. Perhaps not. Perhaps bunnies and the occasional raccoon. The building is solid masonry construction, not that mocksolid veneer stuff (patooie!) being thrown up all over the neighborhood. It was in original, unkempt, severely dilapidated, unrestored condition when we bought it two years ago. We went down to the bare bricks and completely redid the place.
Come with us no w for a tour. MAIN LEVEL
There is a new thermal leaded glass entry door with '"period -correct • front porch. No anonymous calls in the middle of the night from someone chiding you about an incorrect porch. Sleep easy.

Once inside, you find a tile entry foyer and convenient guest closet.

tte"P£. The living room floors are ifl grade red oak strip.
KITCHEN AND FAMILY ROOM
The combination kitchen and family room is a spacious 17 X 19 , with Frenc h doo rs leading to a cedar deck. Nice tile for the kitchen floor. Red str ip oa k. laid diagonally, for the family room. Cust o m cabinetry in maple has been ordered. Top of the line appliances. naturally.
There is no obligatory powder room . Instead there is a real bathroom with a stall shower. A laundry chute to catch stuff fr om the 2nd floor will be installed, too.
LOWER LEVEL
.The main r o.om is extremely large-27 X 11. It coul d be many things. A family / exercise/media room. Use your imagination.
A smalle r room to the side could be a guest room. A maid's or nanny's room. An o ff ice. How about a win e cellar? roo:'.ere is a full bath down here. And a very nice laundry
Mechanical stuff has been thought fully stashed in a separate area from the family /exercise/ media room. SECOND LEVEL
