B. MARTIN PEDERSEN
Letterhead for a shop that featured nautical antiques . It was owned by an architect with an idiosyncrasy of writing on only the right half of the page so Pedersen used the other half. Three of a series of mailing pieces for the S. D. Scott Printing Company. These incorporated a wide variety of design , illustration and photographic techniques executed by Pedersen .

This California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) project began operation mid-April, 1973. More precisely, the system began its test phase on that date. The boards proceeded carefully, and advised motorists to do the same.
(1)
(2) After a numerical countdown phase, the signs continued to avoid their headlined freeway condition responsibility and instead discussed safety.

(3) Evening motorists, weary of the unmoving taillights ahead, were given the illuminated life-saving potential of seat belts to consider.

(4) And early morning drivers were vaguely admonished, rather than advised, as they headed into downtown congestion.

(5) Enroute home, carpools continued to be advertised as the means to improve traffic, which began to seem more plausible than communication systems. Obviously, the message boards were still clearing their collective throats before saying anything actionable or unusually helpful.

(6) An apparent breakthrough in this shakedown pattern, "Truck ahead/left shoulder," announced on one sign ...
(7) .. . turned out to be a Caltrans maintenance crew working on the follo wing sign . . .
(8) Then , just as the motoring public began to express disenchantment, safety slogans vanished from the program and the system began working.
(9) Given timely traffic information, drivers tended to stay on the freeway, which saved surface streets from unnecessary congestion.
(10) E ven a "wet pavement" announcement in a rainstorm , if not big news , was certainly believable. The communication Loop was working.
( 11 ) Or was it ? Why did the signs ignore a subsequent do wnpour? And why are there two one-sided signs here, where one two-sided board would do?
(12) And what, in heaven's name , is "normal" ? Someone may have used a call-box for help on that one ...
