HoYEM is the proprietor, pressman and designer for Arion Press in San Francisco. He is widely noted for his fine limited edition books.
ANDREW
"Picking five is relatively easy; they are Baskerville, Garamond, Janson, Goudy Modern and Lutetia, which was designed in the twenties by Van Krimpen. It caused quite a stir when it first came out, but hasn't been used much in the last couple of decades. It's similar in weight to Centaur. "The five I picked, especially Baskerville, Garamond and Janson, were the
typefaces I learned with; they were the ones we had at the press. But for the kind of work I'm doing now, I need a wider variety. It used to be an economic factor; we just couldn't always afford to buy the metal. Things have changed considerably, and now I can get anything I want from MacKenzie & Harris (The last type founder on the west coast). I just designed and printed an edition of "The Maltese Falcon" in Bodoni Medium. The early limitation on me was a valuable education, because every typeface must be spaced and leaded differently."
