Starbucks: On Good Grounds Overview: Produced in partnership with Conservation International, this online marketing campaign is the first of several to promote Starbucks's coffee origin countries. The presentation focuses on Chiapas, Mexico, where shade coffee is grown. Divided into three sections, it seamlessly integrates interactive content and beautifully blends education, entertainment and commerce in a sophisticated letterbox format. Visitors can navigate in a fun, creative way while learning about the growers, the species that thrive in the region, the global perspective of biodiversity and (of course)

Sleeping Giants Overview: AMARC (Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Center), in the Arizona desert, is an outpost for retired military aircraft-where they go for rest, recycling and rehabilitation. Through a visual collage of images, the acoustic sounds of slide guitar and audio interviews of AMARC employees, this site for Eastman Kodak presents life inside the remote aviation center and follows the rejuvenation process from arrival to Right out. A subdued color palette and a discriminating use of Flash help to create a visual design and interface that never overpowers the content. But it's the slideshows that pointedly portray the majesty of the million-dollar machines and contrast their size against

McNett Country Overview: Created as the first in a series of Web documentaries focusing on the stories of regional country music heroes, this site deftly chronicles the musical journeys of brothers Bob and D ean McNett. Through archival photos, audio interviews and choreographed sound, it presents a combined total of the brothers' 95 years of life in a single interactive experience. The platform is elegantly used to present the story and make it accessible to visitors with varying levels of computer literacy. The visual presentation provides users with a rich, cinematic experience while allowing them the option of either sitting back and watching or taking control over the linear nature of the narrative. No! Songs for Children Overview: They Might Be Giants (TMBG) , one of alternative rock's most enduring and innovative bands continues their musical odyssey with this enhanced music CD. Each of the sixteen songs is accompanied by an animated "short" that consists of characters, that the user can interact with, and a sing-along interface to follow the lyrics. The sometimes educational-and always unique-musical compilation is TMBG's first album intended solely for children, but the innocent silliness of the music, the lyrics and the presentation is cleverly designed for mass-market appeal. The result is a disc on wh ich children and adults can easily find humor, entertainment and easy-to-remember songs. NO. NO¡ NO • _

Shawn's Folk Art Overview: This is an autobiographical journey into the world of folk art through the eyes of urban artist Shawn Murenbeeld. By delivering the rustic and primitive qualities of the folk art medium using Flash as the platform, this site successfully combines hand-crafted and electronic art. More importantly, it brings the artist's wooden creations to life on-screen. A hand-drawn quality successfully conveys the whimsy of the craft while properly-titled sections guide visitors to a small portfolio, images from the workshop and information about the artist. The animated, collage-like interface requires sound and user interaction for the full, intended effect; without them visitors won't hear the ambient polka music or the effective rollover sounds that provide the

site's distinctive character. Shawn Murenbeeld, creative director Ed Apostol, developer/programmer Tony Lei/Jacqueline SiWincent Kwok, animators Touchwood Design, site design and development Shawn's Folk Art, client

Location: Pasadena, California . Duration: Two years. Staff: One . Education: The school 0' Mom and Dad, a S.F.A. with honors in illustration from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and a B.A. in sociology from Denison University in Ohio. Cultural Influences: Average day-to-day things like signs and trees and peop le walking down the street - the going-about-your-daily-business stuff most folks don't see anymore. It is fun to imagine the crazy stories behind it al l, and Los Angeles is a supersonic place to do this . Being from Philadelphia , I find this place magnificently insane. L.A. is a giant idea factory. I am also obsessed by old magazines, catalogs from the 1960s and '70s (especially the underwear sections). Loretta Lynn, other people's scrapbooks, sparkly things, lobsters, and outsider artists . This list changes often . There is also a very long list of excellent, kind people who have influenced and helped me, but I must mention Rob and Christian Clayton without whom I would still be stuck trudging away in a cubicle somewhere.

2

Environment: Surrounded by curious things that make me happy. Philosophy: Each morning I get up and pinch myself and am thankful because I get to make art for a living. That makes me a very lucky dog. Here is my ph ilosophy list: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you . Don't copy, steal or cheat. It doesn't make sense to eat nonfat ice cream . Be honest most of the time . Don't take yourself too seriously. Try something new. You can't control it. Don't paint boring stuff.
