A new independent imprint

Milky Way Picture Books is a new independent Canadian imprint dedicated to illustrated children’s books.

It’s never too early to nurture the idea of books as spaces to experience and share moments of beauty with children. Milky Way Picture Books wishes to spark children’s interest in literature, storytelling, illustration and art, so that the discovery of a book is something they’ll want to repeat. Milky Way Picture Books’ mission is to stimulate children’s passion for beautiful books.

The titles published by the house stand out for their narrative, literary, graphic and fabrication qualities. Even though fictional work is at the core of its publishing program, Milky Way Picture Books is open to varying genres of illustrated books, ranging from picture books, comics, word books and non-fiction books.

Global literature for children

Milky Way Picture Books publishes titles by creators from all around the world. We think publishing books in translation is important because of the narrative, aesthetic, conceptual, philosophic, and cultural richness they present. Books created by people brought up within other cultures offer different understandings of family, community, life, and so on. Milky Way Picture Books wants to give children a global literature and a bigger framework for thinking about the world and our place in it.

We don’t think adults deserve only a national literature. Why should we think that children aren’t also nourished by a global literature?

Milo the Knight

From the moment he was born, all Milo has ever known is knighthood. He eats, sleeps, and breathes it every moment of his life, never taking his armor off even for a minute. BIOS

Grégoire Laforce is a former military man who’s slowly rediscovering his more childlike side. Through his work in the community, he discovered first-hand the importance of engaging men in preventing gender-based violence. Milo the Knight is his second picture book, following his October 2023 debut The Lost Drop. He and his family can often be caught having wild kitchen dance parties in their home in Gatineau, Canada.

Charlotte Parent is a freelance illustrator and comic artist based in Montréal. She holds a BFA from Concordia University, where she specialized in drawing. She also has an MA in art conservation, and works as an archaeological and world cultures conservator.

A colorful, eye-catching word book — written in both English and Spanish — showing us how everyday things are connected in unique ways.

BIO

Bernadette Gervais is a highly regarded author and illustrator, credited with the creation of over 100 hildren’s books. Born in Brussels, she studied fine arts at École des Beaux-Arts in Mons, where she began crafting her diverse range of illustration techniques, such as stenciling and engraving. Gervais is a winner of the 2020 “Pépite d’or” from the Montreuil Children’s Book Fair and received a special mention for her work atthe 2022 BolognaRagazzi Awards.

BIO

Marine Schneider is a Belgian author and illustrator, who decided, at age five, that she would grow up to make children’s books. After studying illustration in Ghent and travelling the world, she began her career by illustrating three books for children’s author Elisabeth Helland Larsen. Schneider’s most recent work, Hekla et Laki, was awarded the 2022 “Pépite d’or” — one of France’s top honors for children’s literature — at the Montreuil Children’s Book Fair. She lives and works in Brussels.

Tereza Vostradovska lives in the Czech Republic. She graduated from the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. Little Mouse’s Encyclopedia was originally Vostradovska’s diploma thesis project and took home the Golden Ribbon Award for children’s nonfiction in the Czech Republic. She is now dedicated to children’s illustration, interactive games, animated films, toys, and all kinds of creations.

Emma Christina Simpson is a British author and illustrator. Considered a talented up-and-comer in the world of picture books, Simpson was named the 2021 UK winner of the international picture book illustration competition Picture This!. Nadine Robert, the founder of the publishing house Comme des géants, has always had a strong passion for illustrated children’s books that have a powerfully built narrative approach combined with strong images. She is a recent recipient of the 2022 Governor General’s Award for her story Clover, and has received Best Book of the Year honours from Kirkus and a New York Times/New York Public Library Best Illustrated Children’s Book award.

Valerio Vidali is an Italian illustrator, whose picture books have been adapted into over a dozen languages across several continents. One of his recent works, Hundred: What You Learn in a Lifetime has sold over 200,000 copies worldwide. Vidali is also the recipient of numerous awards, including two NYT/NYPL Best Illustrated Children’s Book honors in 2013 and 2018. He lives in Berlin.

Luca Tortolini is a writer, screenwriter, and teacher. His first book, Le case degli altri bambini (The Houses of Other Children), received a Special Mention for the Opera Prima Award for best debut book at the 2016 Bologna Children’s Book Fair. Since then, he has also been named a recipient of the 2017 Janusz Korczak Prize and the 2021 Premio Andersen (Andersen Prize). He lives in Macerata, Italy.

Felicita Sala taught herself illustration and started making picture books upon her return to her native Italy from Australia in 2007. She now works as a full-time illustrator and is, notably, a winner of the 2018 New York Times/New York Public Library Best Illustrated Children’s Books for She Made a Monster. In 2020, she also won the Premio Andersen (Andersen Prize) as Italy’s top illustrator, and her own book Lunch at 10 Pomegranate Street has been translated into ten languages. She lives in Rome.

Her numerous picture books have been nominated for several prizes, including a USBBY Outstanding International Book and Marilyn Baillie Picture Book. Jean-François Sénéchal was born among books. After studying anthropology, he returned to his first love, devoting himself to literature. He is a well-decorated author, as the winner of the 2017 Joseph S. Stauffer Prize in Literature from the Canada Council for the Arts, a 2019 Prix jeunesse des libraires du Québec, and a 2021 Governor General’s Award, for which he was also a finalist in 2019.

Chiaki Okada is an illustrator and author of children’s books from Osaka. Her gentle, calming artwork was selected for exhibition at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in 2010 and she has since illustrated books by authors from around the world. Her first picture book published in English, For All the Stars Across the Sky, was released in 2019. She currently lives in Japan.

Mireille Messier is a children’s author with a background in theatre and broadcasting. She has published over 30 picture and chapter books. When she’s not writing, Mireille works in children’s television as a scriptwriter for various programs. Born in Montréal, she now lives in Toronto with her family.

Charlotte Parent is a freelance illustrator and comic artist based in Montreal. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Concordia University, where she specialized in drawing. She also has a Master’s of Art Conservation, and works as an archaeological and world cultures conservator.

Publisher, translator, and author, Nadja Belhadji has written many non-fiction books. Mother of a young girl, she lives in Paris. Marc Majewski is a French author and illustrator based in Berlin. As a child, Marc discovered a passion for drawing and painting through the works of Gustave Doré, Maurice Sendak, Quint Buchholz, and symbolist painters. After obtaining a degree in literature and arts, he studied illustration and painting for two years. Marc’s first book, Un beau voyage, was published in 2016. Marc is passionate about the environment, and loves painting landscapes and scenes from the natural world.

Mikołaj Pa (Pasinski) is a book designer based in Wroclaw, Poland. He is a graphic novel and children’s book author who is mostly interested in children’s literature, book design, typography, and print. His clients include Harper Collins, Egmont, Matilda, and Dwie Siostry.

Gosia Herba was born and raised in a small town in southwest Poland. She started drawing as a child and never stopped. After graduating from the National School of Fine Arts in Wroclaw, she started her career working for various publishers, magazines, music labels, and agencies. Her work has been exhibited worldwide, in particular at the Biennial of Illustrations in Bratislava, the Tallinn Illustrations Triennial, and the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. Her clients include The Quarto Group, Penguin Random House, Andersen Press, The New York Times, and The New Yorker. She lives and works in Wroclaw.

Author, screenwriter, and columnist André Marois is the author of over 40 published titles, including picture books, novels for teens, and more. Oriane Smith was born in a foggy seaside town in France. She moved to Montréal, Canada, in 2014, trading the waves of the sea for snowcovered forests.
