Sometimes, in jest, we boast that “all roads lead to Nashville,” confident in our belief that Middle Tennessee may, in fact, be the best community there is … perhaps even in the center of the universe. And while we recognize that claim may be a bit exaggerated, we believe in our hearts that the most discerning people will eventually recognize the quality and convenience we know to be the hallmark of life in Middle Tennessee. But with all of the growth fueled by our civic enthusiasm and the good created, inevitably comes some bad. Diseases don’t stay on the other side of the ocean. Our children need to learn to read. We need to appreciate diversity of thought and background, and we need to have the capacity to protect what we’ve had and to build the future we want for ourselves and our children. That’s why The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee is so very compelling. We connect your generosity with community need. Not just today, but for generations to come. Why? Because we share this community. Because the actions of each of us affect all of us. We invite you to join in the work of The Community Foundation. You can create your own fund or add to any of the funds in this Catalog for Giving. They cover many of both our community’s opportunities and needs. Identify what matters to you, and then let The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee help you help others as we work to make your vision a reality. — Ellen Lehman and The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee team

THE ANGEL FUND Small gifts with big impact. That’s the goal of The Angel Fund of The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. Have you wondered how your gift of $10, $50 or $100 could possibly make an impact on the needs of the Middle Tennessee community? The Angel Fund enables incredible public servants, or “angels,” working in the nonprofit sector to help people in need. These “angels” invest in critical points in the lives of people they serve, helping them over a rough patch and on to better times. Here is an example of an Angel Fund grant:

PENCIL FOUNDATION The Pencil Foundation operates four Family Resource Centers at Tusculum Elementary School, Antioch High School, Glencliff High School, and Maplewood High School, community hubs within MNPS school communities that help meet the needs of parents and children to improve education and the support of families. The Angel Fund provided a grant to these four centers so financial resources would be available for the new pair of glasses for the elementary student struggling with homework or the hygiene products for the high school student so they could come to school the next time rather than stay home.

M.B., a high school student, lives in a broken home. His parents separated, leaving his mother, who is disabled and unable to work, destitute. M.B.’s father is active in his life, and looks after him part of the time. Times are tough in that household as well, as M.B.’s father has five children in total and struggles to provide for all. M.B. came to his social worker in need of shoes, pants, a jacket, and a backpack. The Angel Fund provided a $75 gift card to the social worker to purchase the items on behalf of the student. “When students do not have to worry about clothing, food and having the items necessary for them to learn, they are able to concentrate in their classrooms. Students facing adversity of any kind easily thrive with the appropriate support. Your contribution to The Angel Fund makes this possible.” – Pencil Foundation

Be an angel. Gifts to this Fund are transformative. Consider the difference your gift can make, no matter the size.

A CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION A Cause for Celebration wants to ensure that every child, even those living in difficult circumstances, knows that they are celebrated. Currently, the Fund provides birthday parties for mothers and children living at the YW’s Domestic Violence Shelter. Contributions of any size are welcome to perpetuate the joy that this Fund supplies.

YOUR GIFT CAN HELP THE EYES OF A MOTHER AND CHILD LIGHT UP AS THEY LISTEN TO “HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU” AT A CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION BIRTHDAY PARTY.

CHILDCARETENNESSEE ChildcareTennessee began as an initiative of The Community Foundation in 2010. Then and now, this Initiative has made connections and strengthened partnerships to support the childcare community across the State of Tennessee. The resources we’ve developed have always been about strengthening the quality of childcare centers and assisting prospective employees and parents in connecting with these centers more easily.

CHILDCARENASHVILLE.COM connects the need for quality childcare with the knowledge of open enrollment availability.

SUBSTITUTE SERVICE

CHILDCAREMATTERS SUBSTITUTE SERVICE provides trained, temporary staffing with comprehensive licensure documentation through an innovative website.

Financial ServiceS

CHILDCARETENNESSEE FINANCIAL SERVICES offers a cloud-based bundled service of tuition billing and collection, financial analysis and reporting.

CHILDCARETENNESSEE.COM provides childcare administrators with an array of tools and practices that save their programs time and money and in turn improves the financial strength and quality of their programs. This project is funded through a grant with the Tennessee Department of Human Services and The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee.

UNRESTRICTED IMPACT FUNDS The Unrestricted Impact Fund makes grants to programs that haven’t always existed in our community. Supporting a changing landscape is the exact role this fund is intended to play. It welcomes gifts today from donors who know the needs and opportunities of our community will be forever changing and evolving and that The Community Foundation will always be here to respond with financial resources through its annual grantmaking program. A few programs funded in 2018 were:

CEDAR SENIORS Demographers have long predicted the growth of the senior population in the future, but the future is now. 21% of the population will be over 65 years old by 2030. Cedar Seniors opened its doors in 1986 as a place to connect with seniors in Lebanon. Its programs and services continue to grow as the number of seniors grows. They currently deliver 10,000 meals annually to seniors throughout the community.

DAVIDSON COUNTY MENTAL HEALTH AND VETERANS COURT ASSISTANCE Mental Health Court arrived in Nashville in 2001, only the fifth court of its kind in the US. Both the Mental Health Court and the Veterans Court are presided over today by Judge Melissa Blackburn and a staff committed to offering mental health and substance abuse treatment options rather than jail time.

END SLAVERY In less than a decade, End Slavery has helped shine the light on human sex trafficking in our State, provided services to more than 1,000 survivors, and helped create and lead a network of organizations across Tennessee that coordinate their efforts so they are able to have greater impact together. All this for a problem most of us had no idea existed in our community just a few years ago, but one that has recently been described as the “second highest rising crime in Tennessee.”
