2020 CATALOG FOR GIVING

Give online at CFMT.org/givingcatalog

The pandemic won’t kill Christmas. But instead of fighting the crowds and the hassles of shopping, you can give the gift of kindness and support for Santa, for essential workers, for nonprofits across the United States and in your own backyard. To give the gift of The Community Foundation’s Giving Cards, all you have to do is create or choose the artwork that fits your sentiment and your affection, tell us what you’d like to put on the Giving Cards to celebrate the season, and let us know how much money you want and in which denominations should be on the cards. Buying the cards is tax-deductible, and you can give them to friends, family, co-workers, and employers for their employees. What a meaningful Thanksgiving or a Christmas Eve, where the mouse isn’t stirring and Santa’s cutting calories by giving food to his elves as well as all the hungry children watching to catch him in the moment. You buy the cards, and when they or you are ready to complete the gifts — and your shopping without masks — the money goes to charities closest to your hearts locally and throughout the United States. Just tell the gift-givers to go to www.CFMT.org and make gifts that matter as they celebrate the season of Kwanzaa, Hanukah, Christmas and the New Year. Charitable Giving Cards can be given year-round in a variety of amounts to celebrate any special occasion, including birthdays, anniversaries, engagements, weddings, graduations, holidays, retirement and job promotions. It’s easy for you, and meaningful for all. And to all a good night. —Ellen Lehman and The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee

GIVING CARDS: It’s One Gift That Fits All HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: • Pick the Giving Card design of your choice and the dollar amount you want to load on the card. • Purchase the card and get a tax deduction for the full purchase price. We’ll ship the card(s) to you or to your recipients. • Your recipients redeem Giving Cards to make a donation to any qualified public charity in the country they choose — one that fits their personality and their passion.

Fund for Food Security Hunger is more than a prepared meal or a food box, and 2020 has shown us just how quickly many in our community can become someone who is experiencing hunger for themselves or their families. In this moment, we have seen the percentage of the Middle Tennesseans needing the services of food banks and feeding programs double, and sometimes more. Many families have sought assistance for the first time, and the staff members in feeding programs have expressed concerns that this crisis has exposed a much larger problem than previously estimated. The Fund for Food Security supports organizations actively addressing food-related efforts, including the awareness about the relationship between food, nutrition and health; encouraging food distribution, and addressing the root causes of hunger and food insecurity.

A 2019 grantee organization working to impact food security:

Tennessee Justice Center For nearly 25 years, the Tennessee Justice Center (TJC) has been standing with vulnerable Tennessee families and helping them access basic necessities of life like health care and nutrition. TJC’s programs include efforts to connect eligible Tennesseans to food security programs including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the Women Infant and Children Program (WIC), and multiple programs for school aged children. The 2019 grant from The Community Foundation supported resources and work with partners to help thousands of pregnant women and children connect with health and food benefits. The support of this program not only served the immediate need for food, but the corresponding effort to prevent negative health consequences that result from hunger during early childhood in the future.

Anne & Steve Goodhue Fund for Child Abuse Prevention and Healing Anne Goodhue served as a volunteer for more than 25 years at domestic violence shelters, in roles that included serving as a therapeutic play facilitator, working with children and teens of all ages that experienced abuse, including sexual abuse. This insight inspired Anne and Steve’s connection to The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee in 2011 to establish the Anne & Steve Goodhue Fund for Child Abuse Prevention and Healing. In 2020, several reports indicated that reports of child abuse is down significantly (upwards of 25%), mostly attributed to children being out of school. Statistics like these are all the more reason that programs supported by the Goodhue Fund are more important than ever, including a 2019 grant to Nurture the Next (formerly Prevent Child Abuse Tennessee) to support home visits with families. Home visiting is proven to be the most effective way to foster healthy parent-child relationships for families that lack a positive support system. It takes more than parents to raise healthy, happy children. It takes members of the community— including Nurture the Next—committed to supporting families, especially those who are most vulnerable.

Help to support children and child abuse prevention now.

Unrestricted Impact Funds The Unrestricted Impact Fund makes grants to programs that haven’t always existed in our community. Supporting a changing landscape is the exact role this type of fund is intended to play. It welcomes gifts today from donors who know the needs and opportunities of our community will be forever changing and evolving and that The Community Foundation will always be here to respond with financial resources through its annual grantmaking program. A few programs funded in 2019 were:

GraceWorks Ministries GraceWorks Ministries was founded in 1995 by several community leaders that wanted a centralized group of resources and programs to serve those in need of food, clothing and financial assistance in Williamson County; its mission is neighbor serving neighbor, by the power of God’s grace. In 2020, neighbors have stepped up to serve neighbors as GraceWorks has seen double, and some days triple, the demand for food and rent and utility assistance. The program funded by The Community Foundation in 2019 supports more than 1,500 neighbors with rental assistance and more than 2,100 with utility assistance in a typical year.

Healing Arts Project, Inc. Healing Arts Project, Inc. (HAPI) provides opportunities for persons in mental health and addiction recovery to promote healing, community awareness and inclusion. HAPI provides free art classes taught by professional artists, art exhibition and publication opportunities from about 500 individuals per year. These opportunities help participants express and externalize their personal struggles as they create art to tell their story, promoting healing in themselves and understanding in the community.

Shower Up Shower Up was established in 2016 to serve men and women who are homeless with a hot shower and basic hygiene support. The founders learned that for nearly 10,000 homeless men and women, there were fewer than a dozen showerheads available on a drop-in basis. Shower Up is a mobile unit that travels to meet the homeless community in a convenient location for weekly showers, hygiene resources, and an evening of fellowship.

The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee is a valuable resource to celebrate Black philanthropists and connect them with nonprofit organizations that are led by and serve the Black community, as well as those organizations that serve to advance the Black experience in the broader community. Thus, the Give Black, Give Back initiative was formed to engage and incubate Black philanthropists to continue enhancing the vibrancy of our community. We can do this by:

• Helping establish strategies for collaboration between fundholders

affiliated with CFMT;

• Help foster new partnerships among Black philanthropists and nonprofit organizations with similar aspirations for serving the community; • Seek collaborations with corporate, civic/social organizations for greater visibility and awareness of funds established by Black philanthropists for the Black community.
