News from the Front Lines about Young Readers and the Health of the Independent Bookstore

I’ve heard distressing things recently about the health of American letters. First, I’ve heard that young people don’t read. Second, I’ve heard the future of independent bookstores is threatened by the robustness of the book trade online. So when I dropped in to speak to Jimmy Tatum, a 60-something who has worked at Aldine Books nearly twelve years, I halfexpected to hear bleak accounts of dwindling sales and low teenage readership. But that’s not what I got. Aldine is a small bookstore with shelves that go up to the ceiling, where new books are mixed in amongst the gently used. It’s a tight squeeze down its packed rows, but visitors will be well-rewarded for their efforts: Aldine boasts an impressive selection of books on art, photography, history and the Middle East, and has healthy fiction, biography and poetry sections too. “People have been complaining about the online affecting stores like this, but it actually saved us,” Tatum tells me. “We sell quite a few books online.” Tatum and the store’s owner Ira sell some of their inventory on Amazon.com. “Actually, I get more online for certain items than I can in the store here,” Tatum tells me. “Because you see, people that come in here, they’re competitive shoppers. They just won’t buy a book for any price you give it to them. Like that lady.” Tatum is referring to an incident I witnessed just before, when an older woman haggled the price down on a set of language tapes. “I wouldn’t even bother arguing with her,” Tatum tells me. “I’ll give her whatever she wants—but she’ll always come back.” “Some things you just don’t argue with,” he says. “And women? No. Especially the older ones. I do not bother.” This is the sort of thing I was afraid we’d lose—small, local bookstores where patrons have relationships with proprietors—and personal interaction still matters. When Tatum agreed to the

lady’s price, he told her, “Okay, come on. Only for you.” I ask him whether he has many teenage patrons. “Oh yeah,” he tells me. “They come in.” He tells me teens visit largely to pick up fiction. “Like that book “Wicked,” he says. “I can’t get enough of that book. They love that book—especially the young ladies.” I ask him what else teens are reading. He mentions “Confederacy of Dunces,” the works of John Fante, Hunter S. Thompson and Kurt Vonnegut—“I think that’s because he’s dead now”—and “a little bit of Bukowski.” “I have a lot of young readers,” he says. “They like what they like and they know what they want. They know the books pretty good. There’s no selling them anything. They look around and find books, books I didn’t even know were here.” “Young people do read,” he reiterates. “You just got to have the things they want to read.” I ask if he feels like they’re competing with the internet for young people’s attentions. “This is a growing and modernistic society we’re in, and this”—he indicates an old square computer monitor a few feet away— “seems to be the number-one resource for education and everything, but I’m not sure what all this is leading to. Me, I’d rather see kids in books.” I tell him I would too. “From the beginning of my time it’s always been that way. Why they want to change it, or why is it changing, I have no idea.” I tell him I’m glad, at least, to hear that kids are buying books. And I’m glad the business is doing well. “We could do a lot better I guess, but I’m happy as long as I’m here, and I sell a book here and there, and I have enough money to buy myself a nice book.” He laughs. “That’s the only thing I use it for,” he says. WHAT’S YOUR COLOR?

SMOKEY EYES | I know you all want them! A smokey eye can be done with any color. Just use the darker shades of whatever color you choose. I’m using browns on this example which can be a little softer than black.

Raspberry. In its fruit form, this tart treat can pack a very powerful punch. In addition to containing bountiful amounts of antioxidants and Vitamin C, raspberries have a very sharp, bright ruby-red color that makes them look as scrumptious as they taste. It has a similar effect as a garment color. While we can’t guarantee it will assist in maintaining a perfect bill of physical health, we would bet that it would cure any fashion ailments you may have. If you’re a vibrant extrovert that loves to stand out in the crowd or you want to make a big statement, take two, three, or four of these and call us in the morning.

You need a primer and 2 shades of eyeshadow, one a little lighter than the other shade, and an eyeliner (I recommend Too Faced Lava Liner). Eyeshadow always needs a primer! Does your eyeshadow crease and rub off by the end of the day? NOT ANYMORE! M.A.C. has great primer. Start by applying primer all over the entire eye area, then apply the lighter shade all over eyelid, blending out over orbital bone, stopping just after it. Then thickly line around entire eye with eyeliner, it doesn’t have to be perfect. Then take a brush and blend out line until it is soft and smokey! Then apply the dark shadow over the liner but just at the lash line and then blend out. Voila!!! If you’re feeling courageous line the inner rim of your lash line and apply mascara, if not just apply mascara. Now go out and have a martini!

Amethyst. The root of the word “amethyst” stems from the Greek word “amethystos”, which basically translates to “not drunk”. As silly as this may seem, it couldn’t be a more apt description. Of course, we prefer “cool” or “calm” to “not drunk”, but any way you look at it, Amethyst invokes a feeling of relaxation and focus. So it’s easy to see why Ancient Greeks and Romans would drink out of Amethyst-constructed goblets when consuming large amounts of alcohol, believing it would keep them from getting too intoxicated. At some point they wised up and realized this wasn’t working. So we wouldn’t suggest that you wear this color as insurance for a night of bar hopping, but when you’re looking for a color that speaks to your pragmatic and sensible side, cover yourself in Amethyst.

Under all great makeup is great skin care. Most of us want to look pretty and natural, and in order to achieve a look that seems effortless you have to start with good skin.

Sapphire. This beautiful blue gem has roots that run very deep into the past. It’s disputed whether or not its origins are from Biblical times (as a sacred stone referenced in Exodus of the Old Testament), or if its discovery was actually made during the Roman Empire as a form of Jacinth. In any case, it’s clear that it’s a timeless color with a venerable soul. And the good thing about a color that’s ageless is that it won’t make your wardrobe look like it came from the Planet of the Ancient, but still adds an element of dignified sophistication. If you’re more class than sass, this may be the one for you.

Everyone has their own signature color whether they know it or not. It’s their favorite one, or the one they just happen wear the most. It’s the one each person feels compliments them best. Eggplant. This may be one of the most versatile, yet highly underrated fruits (yes, that’s right, it’s a fruit, not a vegetable) out there. Almost every nation in the world utilizes this surprisingly tasty and cholesterol-reducing food in some signature dish kindred to their culture, although it may be more commonly recognized in the Mediterranean. Geographic relevance aside, it is a most intriguing fruit, as it actually transforms itself when cooked from slightly bitter to a rich and textured buttery flavor. Its outer color is as multifaceted as its internal form. Since it’s a rich, deep purple, it can either blend in naturally, or be striking without being loud. For those who wish to be understated but still noticed, Eggplant might be your new favorite dish.

Emerald. Can you remember the first time you saw “The Wizard of Oz”? We may not have known it at the time, but the entire movie was a veritable study in color. Everything from Dorothy’s Ruby Red slippers to her ode to the perfect space in her imagination, “Over the Rainbow”, is homage to the prism of colors that make up this magical world that we often take for granted. One of the more showcased colors in the film was depicted in the Emerald City, the enchanted village inhabited by adorable Munchkins where Dorothy begins her mysterious journey. The city is covered in variant shades of green, lush forestry, and of course, the Munchkins themselves adorn Emeralds on their cute little costumes. These Munchkins, with the help of Glinda the Good Witch, propel Dorothy on her journey to seek out the Wizard of Oz, with the emerald green representing life, zest and zeal in the backdrop. tomsshoes.com To those of us who deem we live in a world on the decline, a place where the gloom thickens day to day and the actions of our neighbors are done solely for self-induced pleasures or malicious intent, well yes, that may be true. Yet if the senses are acute, occasionally a story will appear providing a glimpse of hope: a righteous deed that may possibly become contagious. At this moment, I may have such a story: A two year old company by the name of TOMS Shoes (an abbreviation from “Shoes For Tomorrow”) swept into the heart of mainstream America, gaining support from thousands of citizens all applauding its cause: For every sale, TOMS Shoes donates one pair of shoes to a child abroad. It all began with a spontaneous vacation to Argentina. Blake Mycoskie, a 30 year old serial entrepreneur, read a magazine article on the sport of polo that suddenly provoked him to saddle up and head down past the equator: a goal to learn this noble sport was set. However the desire to ride horseback with his fellow gauchos lead to something most unexpected and fate took its course and brought Blake a love at first sight, the Alpargata. This shoe, worn mostly by the native farmers as well as the Argentine polo players, inspired the launch of TOMS Shoes. But before he headed home, ten days at sea off the coast of Brazil proved to be yet another life-altering event. Upon arrival, Blake sold all belongings and purchased a boat which he now calls home. “I love it. I can’t imagine anything else. You can give me the biggest house in Bel Air and I’d say no thanks.” So, what started as a two-man business with a goal to sell 250 pairs of Alpargata shoes, is now a crew of twenty full time employees and 12 full time interns, all making a difference. Already dispersing 10,000 pairs in Argentina, Blake and the gang, alongside volunteers are currently in South

Seeking adaptability, TOMS has already eyed its next target: Ethiopia is a nation inundated by Mossy Foot, a devitalizing condition causing swelling and ulcers in the feet. “There are over 600,000 cases of Mossy Foot in Ethiopia, and our main focus is how we can eradicate this disease. We’ll be dishing out special rubber boots that will prevent it, as well as trying to raise money for doctors and medicine”. In order to obtain complete participation, TOMS is introducing various products for those willing to support the cause. “We need to hit each demographic, each audience, each source. For example, a canvas shoe we’re thinking about launching at Barneys and a high-end leather driving shoe for Neiman’s or Bergdorf, where a whole family in need can get a pair of TOMS shoes for each pair sold, t-shirts, and eventually a 15$ flip-flop. Also, this summer we have a special edition shoe for Whole Foods that’s made of organic cotton, no leather on the inside and recycled rubber and tires”. TOMS Shoes today may be a bottle of water tomorrow, so to all the fortunate ones who are able, the worldwide corporations reaping immense profit, the tiny shop on the corner who stays steady and at times gets fat off the working mans pocket, take heed of TOMS and emulate it’s methodology... create a ripple effect of positivity. Secret Headquarters looks more like the library in Gatsby’s mansion than your neighborhood comic book store: dark-wood shelves display a pristine, manageable collection, and leather chairs invite the visitor to consider before they purchase. This is light-years from your stereotypical comic book store—the one with stained carpeting, labyrinthine rows, books on the floor, and a proprietor eating cold pizza hidden somewhere near the back. “We like comics and we think they should be shown in a better light than they usually are,” explains David Ritchie, the store’s co-owner. He believes the high quality of the books he sells deserves such a setting. “The writing’s better than ever,” he says. “And more interesting.” He may be thinking of Alison Bechdel’s runaway bestseller “Fun Home”— a graphic memoir about a girl whose coming out inspires her father, long closeted, to come out too. Bechdel’s account is smart, moving, beautiful stuff—and at times, incredibly raw. “Comics allow for people to be really honest,” Ritchie says. As opposed to other media, where creatives can feel stifled. Like television. “Whenever there’s advertising involved, it becomes difficult to be honest. In comics, the door’s wide open.” That freedom may explain the current crop of super-real, uberpersonal graphic novels, like Adrian Tomine’s “Shortcomings,” about a guy wrestling with his deep-seated negativity. Tomine is part of a group of comic book artists known as “alternative”— those who portray contemporary characters in realistic situations and leave the superhero stuff to mainstreamers. Ritchie calls the alternative scene “uncharted territory,” meaning these artists can invent their character’s worlds, making them as real and confessional as they want, while at the same time helping to define the emerging genre. Such is the case with the “Peep Show” series by Joe Matt. Explains Ritchie, “You’re reading it thinking, Can you believe he’s portraying himself like that? Is he really like that?” Take, for example, a scene in which Matt’s hero imagines stalking and killing his ex-girlfriend. Later, he’s so starved for physical affection he tries to snuggle with his cat—and grows furious when it bolts. Equally honest—and unglamorous—are the stories that comprise Gabrielle Bell’s “Lucky.” We watch our heroine suffer through mind-numbing day jobs (like assembling trinkets)—

move into a leaky loft with seven roommates—walk across town when she can’t afford the subway— and lose a month’s worth of drawings at the airport. Bell’s work, with its wealth of detail and interest in the difficulties of city life, seems to have more in common with Dickens’ oeuvre than with mainstream comics. And like Oliver Twist’s, Bell’s victories are made more poignant by the struggles that precede them. Many believe there’s room for comics to be discussed in the classroom alongside literature. And reviewers of late have expressed that sentiment too, as they’ve touted the work of Tomine, Bechdel, Daniel Clowes and others. Says Ritchie, “Sometimes some pretty interesting ideas pop up [in comics] that are worth discussion and when they do, it gets people thinking, it gets people talking, it gets the New York Times writing.” These positive reviews bring people into the store—but nothing brings in more business than the popularity of comicbased television. “We have tons of people coming in here who maybe haven’t picked up a comic in thirty years, but loved a TV show, and now they’re loving the comic just as much,” says Ritchie. At the same time, Hollywood itself is turning to comics for source material. With mainstream comics, this is nothing new—as franchises like Superman and Spiderman can attest—but now, Hollywood is looking to comics for small, personal stories—like the one it found in Dan Clowes’ “Ghost World.” “We have so many writers and movie and TV people coming in here because that’s where new ideas are happening,” says Ritchie. “They’ve been happening for many, many years, but now people are sourcing out those ideas.” Which makes now an exciting time for the medium. “It’s interesting to see what develops,” Ritchie says. “Comics… have always just done their own thing, and comic book shops were always that weird place at the back of the strip mall.” Which is why, today, Secret Headquarters makes sense. As a crop of artists breaks new ground in comics, perhaps the venues that sell them should be reinvented, too—until they’re as sharp and attractive as stores that sell art books. With all of the dance-pop, DFA, and hipster hoopla going on out there, it seems to me one of the first people these dudes need to thank is Mr. James Brown. JB may not be the first influence you think of for most of these guys, but after a hard listen of both parties you can totally hear the similarities. I really got the connection when I saw LCD live a few months back at the El Rey in LA. James Murphy, like James Brown, puts you in a trance with clever repetitive one liners and, of course, a sick and constantly evolving groove. Check out ‘James Brown: Make It Funky’. This double disc set covers everything Brown recorded from 1971-1975. ‘Get On The Good Foot’ is probably the track that will convert you to the funk if you haven’t joined up already. If you enjoy the hypnotic grooves of any LCD song, you are sure to fall head over heels for any one of Mr. Dynamite’s classics. The Godfather at his finest!

Raised by their father in the city of Manchester, twin brothers Allister and Marc Blackham recall their childhood as one deeply rooted in music. By day, the sounds of Luther Vandross, Freddie Jackson, and Anita Baker blasted through their house and out into the streets. By night, Joy Division and The Cure took over when their punk rock cousin watched them as their dad worked in a factory. Looking back, the twins realize they had no choice for their future careers—music was in their blood—and they had to pursue it. “Music was always in our household. There was no escape! Fast forward to 2007 where Allister and Marc, better known as The Eye Candy Twins, have become international DJ superstars, jet setting around the world spinning electronic music, and garnering a die-hard fan base in the process. And it is those fans who gave the twins their name. The brothers used to run a successful club event called Eye Candy. Triggering a cult following, they traveled across the globe promoting their parties. Though their good looks have nothing to do with the name, swooning girls and guys across the world would definitely agree they live up to it. But despite the twin’s model looks and growing popularity, they continue to stay grounded and humble. “We were never motivated financially or materialistically. Our only responsibility it to repay the debt of gratitude that we owe to the music that dragged us off the streets and take the whole scene as far as it can possibly go. The great thing about electronic music is that it has no preconceived identity! It isn’t exclusive to, nor does it favor, one race, nationality, religion, sex, or class.” The success Allister and Marc have attained as DJ’s allows the brothers to use that pedestal as a platform for raising environmental awareness and advocating animal rights. In January they will spend three nights at the Sundance Film Festival as the headlining entertainment for the Eco Lounge Hotel, a hip, earth-friendly venue. Partnering with the World Wildlife Foundation and the Eco Lounge Hotel, the brothers hope to spread the word on the importance of safeguarding natural habitats and endangered species. The Eye Candy Twins have an exciting future ahead of thema chance to record an album with new label Boiler House and an upcoming gig as television hosts on a new show airing in Asia next year. DJ Factory takes young, upcoming DJ’s and gives them the chance to hone their talent and showcase it to the masses.

SUN RA | All hail the ancient Egyptian God of the Sun! If you love Madlib and his style of producing music you need to look up one of his favorite free jazz pioneers. Madlib has done remixes and has used numerous samples of the outer space musician. Some of the better experimental music produced by Sun Ra and his Arkestra (and believe me there’s a shitload) can be found on ‘Space Is the Place’. I will admit, it isn’t very easy to get into the man from Saturn, but if you have patience for Madlib concoctions you should be in good hands with the experimental brilliance of Sun Ra.

Tell me about how you got to Alternative?

I have been designing and making clothes my entire life. My first customers were all my many Barbie’s… which I am proud to say I still own. I use to take Kleenex and scrap pieces of fabric from my mom and make each of my Barbie’s “runway” ready. After graduating with a fashion design degree, and a short stint as a stylist, I stumbled upon Alternative and knew I was where I needed to work. 8 years later and a move from Georgia to our Los Angeles office, and I still feel that way. After all, the customers are much bigger and the fabric much softer, but I still feel like I get to “play Barbie” everyday. What is your favorite fabric? I absolutely love our 40’s Pima fabric. It is so soft and comfy while having such a lush look about it. Put it over some leggings for a good day of shopping or put it with a long string of pearls and you are ready for a dinner party. It can transform looks as quickly as you can!

What is your favorite new trend? My favorite, forever, trend is no trend at all. I love those timeless pieces in your closest that can go from day to night, season to season, year after year. I love how almost all of our fabrics at Alternative have that ability as well. Living in Southern California, it is a known fact that you could surf in the morning and ski in the afternoon (haven’t done this yet though). I feel your closet needs to be able to transition like that as well! Most of Alternative’s stock line is t-shirts. Can you make other things like dresses? Absolutely. Alternative can make any silhouette or body you want. We know that knit fabrics are no longer proprietary to just a basic crew but from your favorite lounge-around pants to your sexiest little dress. As long as you can design it, we can probably make it.

I saw an Alternative tee in a boutique the other day with a great print on the front. So you guys decorate also? Actually we don’t do the decorating. Alternative focuses on being the best blank tee supplier we can, by staying up on the best fabrics, the latest trends in styles and colors and having the timeless classics as well. We will be happy to ship direct to your local decorator. We will do our magic and let them do theirs! Alternative Custom sounds exactly like what I have been looking for. Can you give me a quote on how much it will cost? Absolutely. We can always give you an estimate based on your description of the style using our fabrics but until we know the specs and sewing details, it is hard to give you an exact. We always want to be able to give you the very best price so providing a sample or tech pack with spec will allow us to do that. 207
