LOCATION LONDON (UK)
OLYMPICPARK LONDON Between 2007 and 2010, DEME remediated a 246-hectare site in the Stratford district
of East London. This brownfield site became the arena for the 2012 London Olympics and
Paralympics. By upgrading the heavily polluted, deprived district, this part of the city was
given a new dynamism and future prospects.

YEARS OF HISTORICAL POLLUTION REMOVED IN LESS THAN3 YEARS
r TONNES OF CONTAMINATED SOIL TREATED BY SOIL WASHING
-An immense challenge For this remediation project, DEME was a tier 2 contractor for the main contractor, working in a PPP formula with the govern ment. The remediation was an immense challenge: whereas in Flanders all market participants combined cleaned350,000 tonnes of soil annually during this period, 1.4 million tonnes at this site alone were cleaned by DEME over three years. The
100
soil treatment centre had to process more than 500,000 tonnes of contaminated soil before the end of 2008 and another 300,000 tonnes before the end of 2009. An additional contract for 600,000 tonnes of contaminated soil was awarded in 2009 and ran until the summer of 2010. The site was then transferred to the client so that they could start building the Olympic stadium and other facilities.
