PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Your 2014 Home Builders Association of Maryland Directory and Buyers’ Guide is here, ready for you to mark pages, circle contacts and turn down the corners. It’s here to help you do business with members. Welcome!

26

In 2013, we totally overhauled this publication from top to bottom. We added the Membership Blueprint and it was met with rave reviews. We added that section to help our members navigate their involvement in the Association. It is a guide that highlights all of the HBAM events throughout the year with descriptions, dates, average attendance, cost and sponsorship opportunities. It shows you how to get involved and involvement is an essential tool in getting the most out of your membership. By becoming active, you meet new members, share ideas, network with your peers and contribute your expertise to your Association and to your industry. The Blueprint also explains some of our most valuable services like government affairs representation, our Building Industries Foundation and details on our new headquarters building, The Maryland Center for Housing. It also includes information on our committees, councils and chapters. The Membership Blueprint isn’t the only great thing about this publication. It also includes the HBAM directory, the number one, go-to resource for the home building industry in the mid-Atlantic. We are the glue connecting you to other members and to your target audience. We understand that your company’s success depends on reaching members through business to business contacts and we have the expertise and opportunities to help you grow your bottom line. If you are a builder or remodeler, take a moment to see if your subs and suppliers are listed in this Buyers’ Guide. If not, that means they’re not members. You work hard in your business to provide the best possible product and service and you support this industry through your membership in HBAM. Please help us make the association and the industry stronger by referring those companies you use who aren’t members so we can contact them about their participation.

There is also an on-line element to this directory. At www.homebuilders.org, you can search for members by category, company name or even by contact person. It is also a great place for consumers and other members to find YOU. We are constantly trying to listen closely to your needs and maneuver our association in the direction that will help you and your business. Never hesitate to let us know how we are doing. We appreciate your involvement and use your comments to build our future. Please contact Kristin Hogle, HBAM Communications Director at 410-265-7400, ext. 111 or communications@homebuilders. org with your remarks.

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS www.homebuilders.org/page/governmentaffairs

HBAM offers effective legislative lobbying at the local, state and national level, representing housing interests and advocating strong positions on issues that impact you. On your behalf, HBAM fights restrictive legislation and regulations that are detrimental to the housing industry. HBAM staff is only a phone call away with information about new regulations, laws or industry concerns. At the state level, HBAM reviews thousands of bills during the Maryland General Assembly session, monitoring those issues which most dramatically affect the home building industry. The Association’s legislative arm in Annapolis, the Maryland State Builders Association, employs full-time staff to monitor the activities of various state legislative committees and to meet with members of the Maryland General Assembly. On the local level, HBAM operates a nationally recognized, award winning governmental affairs program. Chapter leadership meets regularly with local elected officials as well as advocates for the housing industry. HBAM has one of the most unique and successful political action programs in the nation, realizing that the election of a candidate is truly the beginning of effective legislative involvement. As a member, you can participate in state and local PAC’s designed to promote the candidacy of elected officials who support a viable housing industry.

Chapters HBAM’s political strength depends on strong and active County Chapters to drive the Association’s grassroots efforts on the state and local levels. Chapter membership and involvement is free to HBAM members and is your best opportunity to stay abreast of the latest legislation impacting the industry. Each chapter is comprised of a voluntary board that meets monthly to discuss the latest regulations and proposed new laws, to formulate a response and provide direction to the Association’s lobbyists, and to hear directly from state and county elected officials and staff. Serving on a chapter board is your best opportunity to impact legislation and voice your opinion on issues important to you. Chapters also hold a variety of other meetings and networking events throughout the year. POLICY PARTNERS Since 2001, HBAM’s Policy Partners have been underwriting benchmark studies and policy initiatives that have been essential to our ability to make our case before state and local governing bodies. These fact based, objective studies and initiatives have been critical to our successes to date and they will continue to be essential to our ability to successfully advocate on behalf of the industry in the future. These ground breaking initiatives would not have been possible without the generous financial support of our Policy Partners. Policy Partners are those members who have been willing to financially support this essential work. Please review the list of our current Policy Partners. I encourage you to recognize and thank them for their leadership. We, and indeed all in the industry, owe them a debt of gratitude. We also must take the opportunity to encourage you, if your company is not on the list, to join them by becoming an HBAM Policy Partner. BUILDING INDUSTRIES FOUNDATION

www.buildingindustriesfoundation.org

The Building Industries Foundation, founded in 1999, is the charitable arm of the Home Builders Association of Maryland. It was formed to promote shelter related activities for those less fortunate throughout the Baltimore region. The Foundation focuses on ‘sticks and bricks’ projects that provide shelter or shelter improvements for needy families in the six counties and city serviced by HBAM – Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Cecil, Harford, Howard and Baltimore City. Our strategy is to provide shelter-related charitable services in the region by calling upon HBAM members for donations of labor, materials and funds. Examples of recent projects supported by the Foundation include The Arc of Baltimore, the Night of Peace Shelter, the Carroll County Hospice, the Grassroots Homeless Shelter in Howard County, St. Casmir and the Lighthouse Industries and Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The Building Industries Foundation reaches out to our community to recognize the positive impact both individuals and organizations can make through philanthropy and volunteerism on their neighborhoods, towns and cities.

MARYLAND CENTER FOR HOUSING

This is an exciting time for the Home Builders Association of Maryland and its charitable arm, The Building Industries Foundation as they get ready to move into the Maryland Center for Housing. The 10,000 square foot building will house the Foundation and will serve as HBAM’s headquarters. The Foundation will own the building debt-free and lease it back to the Association, thereby providing an ongoing funding source for the Foundation’s charitable activities. We would like to acknowledge and sincerely thank all of our donors. Contributions of professional services, materials and labor have been very important to our success thus far. Donations like these are what are makes this vision a reality. We are still in need of certain product and materials donations so if you would like to help or you know of a company or individual who is interested in getting on board please have them refer to our website at www.marylandcenterforhousing.org for a list of our remaining needs. Please remember to thank them and to consider them for your future projects. Remember, all donations are tax deductible as our Foundation is a 501c3 corporation. Cash contributions are always welcome! Our goal is to have the Maryland Center for Housing debt free when we cut the ribbon in the summer of 2014. We would also like to again recognize Stewart Greenebaum, whose gift of the land has made the entire project possible. The fact that we have been able to successfully undertake this ambitious venture, especially in times like these, is a testament to the strength, vitality and generosity of our industry and our Association. www.marylandcenterforhousing.com
