The MBA is a differentiator, providing mutual benefit for firms and graduates. It has opened up opportunities for career advancement by developing an ability to analyse issues and develop solutions that fit within the organisation’s broader strategic goals. I am confident that the insights and lessons learned on the MBA will continue to add value to my career.” Brendon Grainger Vice President, ICG EMEA Middle Office Citigroup Global Markets
“Students on Durham’s Global Learning programmes are exposed to a range of rich learning resources authored by faculty members, including written materials, video, podcasts and online simulation software. However, the technology we employ is a means to an end. While learning must sometimes be solitary and independent, it is most enjoyable if it is also a social process. We believe strongly in creating a community of learners. Students use our online learning environment partly to access library and other learning materials, in addition to finding ‘study buddies’, participating in community discussions with their cohort, engaging in critical thinking and debate with peers and academic tutors and participating in live webinars from faculty to discuss current thinking and research. By studying with the Global Learning Centre students maximise their learning experience and their employers can take advantage of the added value that Durham Business School provides.” Kevin Hinde Deputy Director Global Learning Centre Durham Business School

“The Durham Business School placement programme gave us the opportunity to develop a relatively new role within the team. Dwayne brought the necessary skill set to be able to scope the role, implement a draft accountability profile and pass on his knowledge to other members of the team. He was able to gain a broad range of professional experience, whilst working with a wide variety of people within Rolls-Royce and our revenue sharing partners. Durham is a target University for Rolls-Royce because of the high calibre, high quality graduates it produces.” Iain Bater, Regional Purchasing Manager – ITP Global Purchasing, Turbines Rolls-Royce
“During my placement with Rolls-Royce, I developed both an awareness of a specific supply chain coupled with knowledge of how a large corporate organisation functions at both an operational and strategic level. I was given a formal role with engaging and challenging targets which provided me with the opportunity to build upon the skills and knowledge I had gained during my first years at university and to develop my technical expertise and personal competence. Through interaction with senior executives and frequent international travel, the placement enabled me to develop professionally whilst improving my cultural awareness. I highly recommend the organisational placement and believe that such an experience provides students with a competitive edge.” Dwayne Squires, BA Economics Student Organisational Placement with Rolls-Royce

Centre for Behavioural Economics and Finance The Centre aims to improve our understanding of economic and financial decision-making, using experiments and register data to study empirical problems. Members of the Centre use experimental methods to study behaviour in markets, games and strategic interactions. The Centre’s portable laboratory allows us to facilitate solutions for complex economic policy issues in the UK.
Centre for Communication Science Communication Science at Durham focuses on the role of inter-personal, organisational, and digital communication, within the context of diplomacy, social change, media with business and commerce. Lying at the heart of the new Centre are the latest innovations that will bring together insights and methods from contemporary biology, neuroscience and medical sciences integrated with those of social science to stimulate communication discovery.
Centre For Economic Growth and Policy The Centre is primarily concerned with issues of economic growth and the variety of ways in which it can be explained and understood more clearly. Researchers working from the Centre are concerned with how growth can be restricted and encouraged as well as the impact that this might have upon individuals and wider society. Current projects engage with many different economic issues that intersect with
Other aims include: • E ncouraging application of research methods across disciplines and collaboration across institutions • D eveloping dialogue between researchers and policy-makers encouraging a more rigorous debate of policy issues in economics and finance In addition to publishing in top academic journals, the centre benefits from other activities, including research and training workshops that focus on policy-relevant issues in behavioural economics and finance.
Key priorities include: • U nderstanding issues of countering ideological support for terrorism and public diplomacy • I nvolving integrated communications to support non-profit organisations • R eframing social change concerns within public debate and media • S eeking competitive advantage through communication enhancement
growth such as inequality, finance, education and, in a more international sense, malnutrition and extreme poverty. The future direction of research lies with understanding the connection between growth and finance, regional disparity in growth, lack of investment in education and training, and the skill gap. The Centre has hosted some highly successful conferences, attracting prestigious speakers from around the UK, in addition to publishing in top international journals on a range of issues.
“Nigel Wright Recruitment has worked on two collaborative research projects with Durham Business School. When conducting research it is always difficult to get our customers, mainly senior corporate leaders with little time, interested in participating in market research surveys. Working alongside a major research institute like Durham Business School provides extra credibility which ultimately has a positive impact on overall response rates. The reports produced by the School’s leading academics are always highly relevant to our customers, and this helps to raise our profile in the UK and internationally, and contributes to our overall strategy of building the Nigel Wright brand on a knowledge platform. Ian Scott-Bell, Marketing and Business Development Manager, Nigel Wright Recruitment

Centre for Financial Stability The financial crisis of the last few years has demonstrated just how little we know about maintaining stability in financial markets and how damaging instability in these markets can be for the wider economy. Despite decades of research in this field, the recent crisis has revealed significant areas of ignorance that researchers around the world are now working to overcome.
Centre for Organisational Dynamics and Ecological Studies (CODES) This influential Centre promotes, coordinates and executes cutting edge research into organisational theory. The Centre’s research focuses on the study of populations of organisations in order to understand the processes that emerge systematically, generating theories that are applicable to any population.
International Centre for Leadership and Followership Seeking to understand the role of leadership in business, the Centre extends traditional research to incorporate the critical role of the follower within the leadership process. Leader focused research attempts to identify the ideals in leadership, but recent research has focused disproportionately on the leader. Our Centre believes that leadership must be partly understood in terms of the characteristics of followers.
The objective of the Centre is to contribute to this research through the work of its members individually and in collaboration with other organisations. The Centre will make work in this field accessible to nonspecialists through public meetings and presentations held in the Business School, in an effort to help those who invest in banks and other financial institutions to get a clearer picture of the risks that such investment entails.
Through these studies, the Centre’s researchers are able to derive theories that can be used to generate successful predictions about the future of industries. Members of the Centre are widely published and past international conferences in organisational ecology have proved enormously beneficial to the wider academic community. The Centre benefits from strong international links with institutions around the globe, ensuring that CODES is a groundbreaking centre of excellence.
Studies undertaken have included: • t he needs and expectations of followers • h ow followers evaluate and view their leader • why followers follow their leader • f ollowers’ contributions to leadership and the ways they influence the leader Through seminars, conferences, papers, and links with others, the Centre aims to increase knowledge and to promote it to practitioners around the world.
