It’s our NHS... The National Health Service is admired across the globe because it provides world class healthcare that’s free at the point of delivery. And yet successive New Labour and now the coalition government have set about dismantling the very basis on which it was founded. Ed Milliband’s claims that a labour government will rescue the NHS from the threat posed to its existence by the Tories are pretty hollow.
...but not for much longer The ugly truth is that the Blair and Brown New Labour governments have riddled the NHS with extortionate debt. The use of Private Finance Initiative deals to fund new hospital buildings means that NHS trusts owe more than £70bn. Even once they’re done paying back the loans they won’t even own the building at the end of it. The Tory-LibDem coalition government have awarded over two-thirds of the £9 billion worth of NHS contracts to private companies over the last 18 months. BUPA, Virgin Care, Care UK, and Circle are all making a fortune.
