Time for a return to working class politics BRITAIN riTain's poliTical crisis continues to deepen said the communist party in a statement following the EU election.

For the ruling class of monopoly capitalists, their first choice as the party of government is now divided, discredited and demoralised. The Tories appear incapable of delivering the semi-Brexit that might have resolved the crisis, while keeping Britain bound by the big business 'freedoms' of the EU single Market. instead, the most likely option now for the ruling class – unless the october 31 deadline can be extended – is that a cross-party alliance of pro-EU Mps will revoke Britain’s notice to leave the EU, with or without a rigged second referendum. This would be risky because – as the Brexit party victory indicates - the political backlash could bury

But Britain’s political crisis also threatens to destroy the prospect of a left-led labour party winning a majority at the next General Election.

The fanatically pro-EU, pronaTo and anti-socialist section of the shadow cabinet and the parliamentary labour party is regaining the initiative, attacking every type of Brexit and pressing for a second referendum. all the attempts by leading labour Eurosceptics to appease them by campaigning for remain and staying silent on the antidemocratic, anti-working class and militaristic character of the EU have failed. supporters of Jeremy corbyn now need to speak up, not least to point out how EU treaties, directives and court rulings would be used to block and undermine the left and progressive policies of a future left government.

labour is being seen by millions of its previously rocksolid voters as anti-Brexit and anti-democratic. They either stayed away from last month’s EU poll or cast a protest vote for nigel Farage’s opportunist bunch of reactionaries.

The resurrection of Farage and the triumph of his Brexit party is due almost entirely to all the cynical moves by pro-EU Mps to delay, dilute and delete Brexit.

Unless labour acts genuinely to honour the majority leave vote of June 2016 and wins back millions of working-class electors, there will be no chance of forming a left-led government.

Their support is worth more than fly-by-nights flitting between labour, libDems or Greens. only a return to class politics, in place of the anti-Brexit politics of personality, fear and hysteria, offers a way out of this political crisis in the interests of the working class and the labour movement. Vote for Mark serwotka: the left wing case UNIONS coMMUnisTs in pcs

oMMUnisTs, alonG with the whole of progressive opinion in pcs and in the wider trade union movement, recognise the need to create and build extraparliamentary action if Britain is to both elect a left labour government and to throw off years of new labour, liberal Democrat and conservative party austerity and anti-working class policies.

These policies have seen homeless people and claimants die, forced students into massive debt and in some cases prostitution and ratcheted up racism including forced deportations. We in pcs have experienced cuts in our wages and terms and conditions. a left labour government gives us a chance to reverse these attacks, to win stronger trade union rights, to enforce anti discrimination laws and to introduce fair taxation and a supportive social security system.

But this won’t happen automatically. it must be worked for it.

since its formation – and after the defeat of an attempted rightwing coup – pcs has strengthened its organisation, raised membership levels and sharpened its campaigning for improved pay and conditions. in a difficult climate the union has been clear about the need to build support both at work and among the wider public for fair pay and pensions and for proper staffing.

We have supported anti racist movements in our workplaces. pcs is seen on demonstrations, building unity with our sister unions and with working people.

We as a union have played our part in supporting those under attack and in the building of a mass movement. over the two decades members engaged in local disputes have been strongly supported, national disputes for pay and pensions have been called. There have been victories and setbacks but at all stages members and local reps have been fully involved. When union members with longer memories look at the situation pre 2000 this certainly wasn’t always the case! such a change doesn't happen

automatically. resources have been put into organising. reversing the fall in membership and maintaining the union's income whilst at the same time maintaining a focus on organising has created tensions but if pcs had failed to face these challenges our union’s influence would have diminished.

There is no doubt that pcs is a more active union, one that more fully involves local representatives and members. Great resources have been allocated when union members take action.

This reflects a growing progressive trend in the thinking of pcs members. probably most activists see themselves as on the left whilst at the same time are not involved in an organised grouping.

This significant fact is in part due to the role played by Mark serwotka. He leads by example and encourages initiative and activity to develop. communists in the sector organised by pcs do not agree with all the policies Mark serwotka advocates but we recognise the quality of his leadership and approve of the fact that he has won very wide support from our members.

our analysis of the EU project differs to his. communists throughout Europe see the EU as a capitalist institution which institutionalises neo-liberal policies and is impossible to transform.

Mark serwotka is part of a group of trade union leaders which has helped shift our movement to the left, one that no longer sees unprincipled compromise and class collaboration as the modus operandi of trade unions. These are among the factors that have helped transform the labour party into a credible government with radical policies that favour working people.

To oppose Mark serwotka’s reelection as our general secretary is to threaten the progress our union has made. it is to oppose the trend to progressive working class politics in pcs and our sister unions. solidarity and socialism have found their way back into the labour party and the wider movement and a defeat for serwotka would be seen as a victory for our employers, the ruling class and the right. a vote for Mark serwotka is both a vote for a stronger union and for progress. H
