The Cambridge volunteers. In 1936, students and university staff and citizens from Cambridge volunteered to fight fascism in Spain by joining the International Brigades. Many sacrificed their life to defend democracy and freedom. The Cambridge University Communist Society [CUCS] and the CU Hispanic Society will host a major public meeting to commemorate the lives of these brave volunteers. Co chaired by Unitarian Minister Andrew Brown and Leo Impett CUCS, speakers include: Jim Jump-secretary of the International Brigade Memorial Trust, author Richard Baxell foremost authority on the Brigaders, and Dacia Viejo Rose-British Academy Post-Doctoral Fellow specialising in the cultural and historical memory of the civil war in Spain today.
