A personal message from Zoe Hennessy

The ConDem government has waged a relentless war on working people and their families in a bid to claw back all the gains we have won since the Second World War. Their austerity agenda aims to maximise profits for the super rich whilst working people suffer welfare cuts and pay freezes.

Millions of productive jobs have been lost across Scotland and the rest of Britain, vital public spending on the NHS, schools and housing has been slashed and our services are being sold into private hands. The richest 1000 people in Britain have doubled their wealth in the last five years, and now own £519 billion in cash and assets.

This is a capitalist crisis!

Yet the Labour Party leadership has failed to stand on the side of working people, and is pledged continue austerity. The SNP panders to big business and has voted down the living wage. It wants tax breaks for big business and has pushed Scottish councils into massive cuts in spending.

Austerity is working ... for bankers and bosses H Working people and their families didn’t create this economic crisis.

Nor should we pay for it!

It’s a crisis of the capitalist system caused by reckless speculation and big business profiteering.

The banks were bailed out with £1.3 trillion of our money – almost 20 times the government deficit this year.

We’re paying for the bail-out with tax and VAT rises.

And with cuts in public services, benefits and wages.

But corporate profits and fat cat incomes have shot up since 2008.

They make more in three months than most people earn in a lifetime!

Today, one in five people earn less than the living wage.

More people in work are below the poverty line than are unemployed!

The SNP Government have passed on Tory-LibDem cuts creating pressure on our public services. The ConDem Govenment has passed more anti-trade union laws to enforce low wages and zero hours contracts.

Communists say we need a left government with new policies – those that put people before profit, democracy before EU austerity and an end to war and NATO expansion.

Take the power! with public ownership We need to kick out the ConDem government and reverse five years of attacks on working class communities and living standards. That’s why Communists say a new government must: H End austerity: no more cuts and privatisation.

H Nationalise key industries and services including transport, energy and the banks. They should be run for the benefit of the people and not for private profit.

H End zero hours contracts. Working people have the right to a regular income, job security, holiday pay, sick pay and maternity leave.

H Introduce a living wage, raise pensions and benefits.

H Withdraw from the NATO nuclear alliance, and decommission Trident. Reinvest this money in our public services.

H Withdraw from the undemocratic and anti-worker European Union, and stop TTIP. H End British-run tax havens, introduce a wealth tax on the rich.

H Reverse Thatcher’s anti-union laws and introduce a trade union freedom bill.

H End benefit sanctions. No more private companies involved in our welfare state.

H Build one million new affordable council homes.

H Provide apprenticeships with proper qualifications and real jobs for young people.

H End racist scapegoating of immigrants and ethnic minorities.

A big vote for Zoe Hennessy, the Communist candidate in Glasgow North West, will send a strong signal that workers and their families demand new policies .

Zoe Hennessy for Glasgow North West HZoe Hennessy is leader of the Young Communist League, lives in Anniesland and has a degree from the University of Glasgow.

Active in her trade union she is 24 years old and works in a supermarket.

She says: “I am standing to challenge both the SNP and Labour on their commitment to stand up for working people and end austerity. After the referendum the working people of Scotland need to come together to fight against austerity cuts.”
