Longtime Asbury Promoter Kyle Brendle Still Loves the Town that Rock Built
BY RYAN LOUGHLIN
If you’ve ever been to Asbury Park to check out a local band over the last 40 years or so, it’s likely you have Kyle Brendle to thank for it.
A staple of the Jersey Shore music scene, Brendle has been booking acts at popular venues at the shore since the ’80s and has continued to be one of the driving forces for keeping music alive and well in Asbury Park today, where he serves as a house agent for legendary venues like the Stone Pony and the Wonder Bar.
Brendle grew up in the North Jersey suburb of Closter, but his grandparents lived in Spring Lake, making the Jersey Shore a second home to him as a kid. By the mid-’80s, Brendle’s whole family had migrated to Monmouth County, where he became entrenched in the vibrant music scene of the time period, when clubs like The Fast Lane, The Stone Pony and others were packing them in shoulder-to-shoulder every week.
“My introduction to the Asbury Park music
scene was as a patron and a music lover,” Brendle recalls. “Asbury was loaded with live music [at places like] The Fast Lane, Park Place, Stone Pony, Mrs. Jay’s. There were way more stages back then. I was just running the streets and getting my fill of all the music. I fell in with a guy named Jack Hurley from Spring Lake who was running shows and he was my first professional introduction to the Stone Pony in the summer of 1982. I started helping out as a stagehand and booking bands to do showcases. Back then, the place was open 7 days a week, so there was plenty to do!”
Brendle continued to work as a promoter at the Stone Pony through the busiest days of the ’80s, when Springsteen sightings became practically a weekly occurrence and almost every night at the club seemed to feel like a major event. But eventually, as Asbury Park began to spiral downward in the ’90s, it ultimately led to the club scene in town having to pivot its business model to survive.
“There were a lot less of the tours and national acts back then. The weekdays were ruled by cover bands — and it was packed, even on a Monday night! That slowly changed when Asbury started to decline in the 90s and it became harder to maintain. We had to drop down to four days a week and tours and bigger acts became part of the schedule.”
The town’s demise in the ’90s brought about hard times and drove most businesses out, but incredibly, music remained even during the darkest years in the town’s history.
“It was a ghost town. There was nothing there,” he remembers. “The boardwalk was all warped, and there were no other businesses open. You came to a show, you ran inside and when the show was over, you fled. And that was it. But Asbury Park was always the focal point of entertainment and music at the Jersey Shore, and that never changed.”

What ultimately changed was Asbury itself. The revitalization of the town, which began in the early part of the new millennium, led to businesses and visitors returning en masse, as the once vacant streets now became packed with folks looking to enjoy the historic nightlife that made the town famous. While the current rebirth has its detractors — mostly nostalgic locals that pine for the past — Brendle is certainly not one of them.
“Asbury Park is as vibrant as ever in every respect. Just take a stroll down Cookman Avenue, Ocean Avenue or the Boardwalk. I don’t agree with [the detractors] at all. For the people who com-
plain a lot, that’s what they do. They are just complainers,” he says with a laugh. Brendle has good reasons to laugh off the naysayers too. The schedule of upcoming shows at the clubs he promotes is packed with a diverse lineup of artists, with everything from top drawing cover and tribute acts to local original bands and national touring acts. But as busy as a place like the Stone Pony gets on a great night, nothing is a sure thing in the live music industry, and Brendle has to be selective about what shows he books.
“One of the reasons we have survived for 50 years at the Stone Pony is because we are very discerning. There are no built-in crowds at large venues anymore.”
And that means a band headlining the Pony needs to have a strong following of fans that can fill the place. But there are still opportunities for smaller bands and local acts to get their foot in the door, either by working as an opening act, or playing at the Pony’s sister venue down the street, the Wonder Bar.
“The Pony has evolved as a full-on concert venue, but we can do local acts and smaller bands at the Wonder Bar,” Brendle notes.
Of course, the most famous local act to regularly hop onstage at both the Stone Pony and the Wonder Bar is Bruce Springsteen. Brendle has been lucky enough to have rubbed elbows with The Boss on a number of occasions.
“Anytime he plays here, it’s just great. He brings such energy and excitement to the room,” he says.
Springsteen isn’t the only one filling Asbury with energy and excitement. Brendle’s passion for clubs and the music scene he fell in love with years ago is as enthusiastic and pure today as it was when he first started working in this town.
“The Stone Pony is still that place where anyone can go and see some great music and have a beer and forget their troubles. Once you walk through those doors, we are all the same person. And it’s great to see so many people smiling ear to ear. That’s why I am in this business, to see those smiles on people’s faces.”
Recognizing MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS AWARENESS WEEK in Monmouth County
BY EMMA SYLVIA

It takes more than knowledge of a disease to cure it. Particularly for one as complicated and prevalent as Multiple Sclerosis. To raise public awareness, fund resources and provide information, and make progress toward cures, March 9 - 15 has been dubbed MS Awareness Week. Across Monmouth County, individuals and businesses are bringing awareness to this cause and making a difference. Here’s just a couple examples:
Single Parents with Multiple Sclerosis
Darrell Wordelmann is the founder of Single Parents with MS, a charity foundation that supports families whose primary caregiver has been diagnosed with MS. After Wordelmann’s mother passed from MS in 2000, brothers Darrell and Bobby knew that they were fortunate to not be left without any other family members following her passing. Supporting Single Parents with MS allows them to provide families in need with support for the holidays, ADA equipment, meals, renovations, financial assistance, and more.

Vito Cardinale has supported those with MS and has funded relief (and a goal of a cure) with the Linda E. Cardinale Multiple Sclerosis Center in Freehold. Now, he aims high with secondary education, with the Linda E. Cardinale High School – growing it into a college campus and full research center, taking his efforts to the next level.
Mr. Cardinale’s vision for the school stems from a deep understanding that breakthrough medical discoveries often emerge from interdisciplinary collaboration and fresh perspectives. By creating an educational environment that combines rigorous scientific training with real-world research experience, Mr. Cardinale aims to inspire and equip young minds with the tools they need to tackle complex medical challenges. The school’s emphasis on solutions-based education and interdisciplinary approaches reflects Vito’s belief that curing neurological diseases, including MS, will require new ways of thinking and novel approaches to medical research, cultivated from an early age.
The Linda E. Cardinale Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Center, located at CentraState Medical Center in Freehold, New Jersey, is a regional leader in diagnosing and treating multiple sclerosis. The center offers integrated, comprehensive care, including accurate diagnostics, emerging therapies, access to renowned physicians, and robust wellness programs to help patients manage their condition effectively.

Mental Hygiene
Exploring Holistic & Vibrant Psychotherapy with Dr. Dana Spada
BY LILIANN PARAS
Can it be true that psychotherapy is finally shedding its stigma? Therapy has entered the mainstream in recent television shows such as Shrinking and Couples Therapy and in older programs too: The Bob Newhart Show; In Treatment ; and The Sopranos. Do the shows reflect softening attitudes, or is this exposure partially responsible for the increasing acceptance of therapy? Or, maybe the stigma is dissolving because of increasing need. A survey by Kaiser Family Foundation and CNN revealed that 90 percent of Americans believe there is a mental health crisis (not problem) in the US. And it is personal: one half of young adults and one third of older adults reported they have felt anxious either always or often. A large part of the anxiety is not knowing how to process and deal with it. No matter the reason, it is a healthy outcome that
more and more people struggling with their mental health are seeking professional help.
Therapy is not only about treating severe issues. Some seek it to overcome a temporary problem, and still others want a place to explore their personal growth. A vibrant and welcoming group of therapists practice locally at LEAF Psychotherapy. CM met with the founder, Dr. Dana Spada, who has more than two decades of practice experience. Her goal is to make therapy a positive and dynamic experience, filled with energy, creativity, and large doses of laughter, too. Based on the many patient reviews, the goal is certainly being met.
Community Magazine: What is LEAF psychotherapy?
Dr. Spada: LEAF psychotherapy is a private practice that treats adults, teens, and children. We offer individual, fami-
ly, marriage, couples, and reunification therapies. Our approach is very holistic. We use a highly individualized approach to treat the very specific needs of our clients. We offer virtual (and encourage) in-person sessions. We are located in Colts Neck, Little Silver, Hazlet, and Sea Girt.
CM: What makes LEAF special as a place for therapy?
Dr. Spada: How we engage in therapeutic process and the way we work. Our brand and culture are modern, creative, and client driven. You can feel this from the time you first pick up the phone to book your session. An owner speaks with you and will match you with the perfect therapist. Our clinicians are open, creative, passionate, and extensively educated and can draw from many therapeutic modalities to find the perfect treatment for you. Whether it is CBT, DBT, Gestalt, EMDR, Somatic or Hypnotherapy, we have a very easy-going vibe. Because we do not accept insurance, we are not pigeonholed, volume-driven, or focused on clinical diagnoses required by insurance companies for reimbursement. We are able to practice very freely, organically, and intuitively. We offer flexible pricing and can accommodate your financial needs. Walking into one of our locations doesn’t feel like you are walking into a doctor’s office. It’s a beautiful Zen space and connotates peace and well-being.
CM: Who should go for therapy?
Dr. Spada: You don’t have to have anything crazy, glaring, or specific going on to book a therapy session. Life is hard. And it’s truly the best, having someone who is unbiased and very supportive alongside you to help you navigate. Your relationship with your therapist can be the deepest relationship you have, and they may come to know you more than anyone else does. Navigating life with a professional who can help you

become aware of your blind spots, and help guide you to live your life as fully and vibrantly as possible — what can possibly be better than this? If you feel like you “lost the spark” it might be a good idea to get a couple’s session booked. Or, if you experience, anxiety, OCD, ADHD, depression, eating disorders, addiction, workaholism, and the list goes on, come on in for a session. We can help you! We have a team of clinicians all specializing in different areas and are able to treat almost all things (even things one might consider strange)!
CM: Are there red flags parents should look for?
Dr. Spada: Some things to notice are whether a child is self-medicating, or is becoming more withdrawn or sad. Other children become over active. Kids can really benefit from therapy. They tend to listen to a therapist even if the parents had said the same things.
CM: What is most satisfying about therapy?
Dr. Spada: Bringing the unconscious to the conscious. We all have an inner dialog, an operating system, created in the early years of our lives that sometimes is destructive. I love it when clients are able to identify their childhood operating systems and realize how they are still stuck in them today. Belief systems they surrendered to in childhood became internalized, and are now self-fulfilling prophecies, such as “not being enough.” People unconsciously play these types of belief systems out for their entire lives without even realizing it. They literally find partners who fit their stories and create entire lives around narratives that are not only false, but totally destructive. We can dig deep and bring these old rusty systems to the surface and update them! We don’t have to live unconsciously in the old regime. That is the most powerful and profound aspect of psychotherapy.

CM: How do you make therapy effective and what does that look like?
Dr. Spada: What makes therapy effective is the quality of the relationship between the therapist and client. That is where all the magic happens. It’s a very special bond, connection, chemistry, magnetic dynamic that is the foundation of the work. It’s how the work emerges—through the relationship. So, that’s step one of an effective experience. Step two, you’ll start to exist differently. Through awareness, you will finally understand why you are doing things you might not be happy with, and recognize there are choices, instead of operating on autopilot. Once my clients take their lives off autopilot and get into the driver’s seat, I get to watch their lives transform. And (in the tune of the holiday song), “Oh what fun it is!!”
CM: Do you notice any trend in your practice?
Dr. Spada: I am seeing increased anxiety. Everything is so fast-paced and people can’t stop looking at their phones. They don’t know how to shut off all the incoming information, how to tone it down, and instead, they look for quick fixes. Can’t lose weight? Feeling anxious? Depressed? Can’t concentrate? They get on a pill. They want to trust medications for many issues, but meds are just suppressing the symptoms. Sometimes there is a need for meds, but the goal is to not stay on them the rest of your life. Therapy is needed to resolve the underlying issues and to reverse some of the ways we deal with the stress.
CM: Has there been a moment that stands out?
Dr. Spada: Two funny comments said by my clients recently. The first was a reference to The Sopranos. “It’s like in The Sopranos; sometimes a few sessions go by and it feels like not much is happening, but then boom, all of a sudden it’s a REALLY good episode and then you realize what was happening in the last few!”
And the other comment was after the session was over and my client was walking out. He turned and looked at me with this huge grin and says, “My life is the same sh**show it was when I walked in here today, but I feel f***ing amazing leaving here!” and basically skips to his car. We both couldn’t stop laughing.

FIXING A STUFFY NOSE AND SNORING

QUESTION: My nose is always stuffy, worse on one side. And not only that...I am told by my spouse that I snore loud! What can I do?
ANSWER: Your best bet is a full evaluation by an ENT specialist who can determine what is causing your nasal obstruction and the most effective treatment. Often, once the nasal breathing is restored, the loud snoring is then diminished or even eliminated. There are several steps necessary for a thorough exam:
HISTORY: Questioning the patient about previous trauma to the nose and also anything that may cause chronic swelling inside the nasal cavity like recurrent sinus infections, allergies and overuse of intranasal sprays such as Afrin.
EXAM: Fiberoptic scope of the nose and throat to look for septal deviations, polyps, abnormal enlargements of other intranasal structures, and draining secretions which can be cultured. Check the external nasal structure for cartilage collapse that can result in a valve obstruction. Also allergy tests, home sleep studies and CT scans if indicated.
TREATMENT: Customized to the patient’s cause of obstruction. Can be as simple as a regimen of intranasal and oral medications or more complex involving surgical procedures.
ADVANCED SURGICAL TREATMENT: The latest techniques allow for quick recovery, no bruising, more precise repairs and open breathing immediately after surgery. Technology has improved with the use of 4K camera/monitors and microscopic visualization, laser guided infrared navigation and new methods and instrumentation for septum repair, turbinate reduction, valve collapse reconstruction and sinus blockage. Rhinoplasty techniques have also advanced and can often be performed at the same time if there are external nasal cosmetic concerns.

A: I enjoy working up close and personal with my students. I love that I am able to make a difference using real life experiences. Knowing that I am having an impact on their lives is my motivation for coming back each day. I love their energy, and their demand for my attention. I make a difference in their thought process so that they can realize their potential and their purpose.
Q: What is the most challenging thing about working with kids?
A: The most challenging thing about working with kids is helping them realize their own potential. My intentions are to help them change their thought process to navigate life beyond the school walls. I embrace the challenge to be able to impact my students in positive ways.
Q: What was your school experience like as a kid? Did you enjoy school?
A: I loved school and had a great experience. Reflecting back, like anything, school had its ups and downs. All of the memories that stand out were of teachers I connected with. These teachers fostered learning, which determined my aspirations to become an educator.
Q: If you could add one new subject that every kid would have to take in school, what would it be and why?
A: Life 101. Real-world experiences. Teach kids how to take risks, build confidence, and navigate life’s challenges.
Q: What is the most important thing that your students have taught you?
A: My students have taught/showed me that I genuinely make a difference in their lives. They always remind me not to give up. They constantly remind me that they need me as much as I need them. They continuously show up and prove to me that the goals and values I instilled in them help them to develop into motivated, young adults.
FIRST RESPONDERS Q & A

Name: Jeremy R. Susser
Title:
Elberon First Aid Squad
Volunteer
Place of Employment:
Elberon
Town of Residency: Long Branch
Q: What initially made you want to be a first responder?
A: At the young age of 13, I lost a very close family member. At the time of her death, the first responders that responded to the call were compassionate, professional, and kindhearted. I believe that early on exposure to that environment laid the foundation for my interest in those services. At the age of 16, I began my volunteer path as a fire cadet for Sea Bright Fire Rescue, and an EMS cadet for Sea Bright EMS. Being there fueled my passion to serve my community, build my skills and training, and change the system for the better.
Q: What do you find to be most rewarding about this kind of work?
A: For the years that I had the opportunity to be a leader in my organization, I would tell new members and applicants that my favorite opportunity serving the community is building relationships with our patients. Whether those relationships are 5 minutes or 50 minutes, in doing so, you are giving those patients a sense of humanity. In most cases you meet these patients more than once, building a rapport with them sends a message to them, that you’re not only here to help them, but you’re compassionate. They call us on their worst day, whatever we can do to give them a sense that it is going to be okay does wonders for them, and their families. Talk to them as if you were talking to your family member.
Q: What is the hardest aspect of the job?
A: Over the years, the hardest part of working in the emergency medical services was not taking what occurred in the field home with you. Some have a hard time building that barrier, where their home life can be separated from their work life. There is a tremendous amount of research that shows that the leading causes of people leaving this field have to do with being ‘burnt out’. That term has a direct correlation with taking what you experienced at work home with you, and not allowing your mental health to heal from those experiences. We cannot help or save everyone, and there will be times where you may feel that was a direct cause of your actions. However, that is not entirely the case. We as providers are battling a system that does not play on our side of the field. The hardest part was knowing that the negative outcome of someone’s medical event was not your fault.
Q: Do any aspects of the job ever scare you?
A: Everyone can feel a sense of uneasiness, or nervousness when providing care to someone who is very sick. The uncertainty that your actions may or may not save them can provide that sense of being scared. The job itself is not scary, but the outcome of the sickness can be. It is not so much that it scares you as the provider, but the continued feeling of worry overwhelms you. Does the job scare me? No. Does the outcome of a very sick patient scare me? Yes.
Q: What was your most memorable experience on the job so far?
A: There are so many moments thus far that fill this question to the brim. However, the most memorable experience would be the opportunity I had with Elberon EMS. I was extremely fortunate to be a part of an organization that went above and beyond for their community. For a few years, I had the opportunity to serve the Elberon EMS in their leadership, serving as their Captain in 2020 and 2021. During that time, we had built a system that provided our community with around the clock services, experienced medical providers, well trained volunteers, and compassionate personnel. Having that amazing group of individuals created an environment that everyone wanted to be a part of. These dedicated professionals trained around the clock, engaged in the community, dedicated countless hours to providing quality and efficient medical services, and built a foundation for what volunteer EMS should be today. Being surrounded by those amazing people created some of the most memorable moments of my life, and I cannot thank them enough for the opportunity they gave me.

Everything in its Right Place
In today’s world, organization is the key to success for any business
The Organization Equation: Solutions and Challenges for Businesses
In the fast-paced world of business, organization often stands as the unsung hero. It’s not just about tidying up; it’s about creating systems that enhance efficiency, improve workflow, and ultimately, contribute to the bottom line.
Unfortunately, not everyone who runs a business is also a master at organization. But while most folks would assume that organizational skills are a problem that a business would have to simply solve on their own, it turns out there are places to turn to that can help streamline the process.
One such business is Closettec, a company dedicated to helping businesses enhance their spaces with custom storage solutions. Their approach is based around the idea that the right organizational solutions can be transformative for any business, whether it’s a gym striving to optimize space or a doctor’s office needing streamlined workstations. The challenges are as unique as the businesses themselves.
Addressing Unique Business Needs
No two businesses are the same, and their organizational challenges reflect that. Closettec recently partnered with a local gym that faced a significant storage problem. Their members needed a convenient place to store shoes and jackets, while the gym also required a dedicated area to display merchandise and supplements. Recognizing these needs, they designed and installed custom storage units that provided ample space for personal belongings and showcased the gym’s products in an attractive, accessible way. The result? A more inviting space that maximized utility and improved the member experience.
Similarly, Closettec worked with a doctor’s office experiencing rapid growth. With a growing staff and limited space, they needed a solution that maximized their available square footage while maintaining a professional, efficient environment. After an in-depth consultation, they developed workstations that featured integrated filing systems, adjustable desk heights, and ample storage for medical supplies. This upgrade streamlined their daily operations, reduced stress for staff, and allowed them to focus more on patient care.

Challenges Businesses Face
While the benefits of a well-organized workspace are clear, the journey to achieving it is not without hurdles. Some of the most common challenges businesses face include:
• Limited Space: Many businesses operate in tight quarters, making it difficult to allocate sufficient space for storage without sacrificing usability.
• Budget Constraints: Investing in organizational upgrades can be daunting, especially for small businesses operating on thin margins.
• Evolving Needs: As businesses grow, their organizational requirements
change, making it essential to invest in flexible, scalable solutions.
• Employee Buy-In: Even the most well-thought-out systems can fail if employees aren’t on board with using them effectively.
The Approach
Organization is not a one-size-fitsall solution. Closettec’s approach begins with understanding the specific needs and goals of each client. By combining thoughtful design with high-quality materials, they create systems that address current challenges while anticipating future growth.
For example, in the case of the gym, they utilized vertical space to minimize the footprint of storage units, ensuring the workout areas remained open and spacious. For the doctor’s office, they focused on ergonomic designs that supported long hours of work while maintaining a professional appearance.
Why Organization Matters
The benefits of a well-organized business extend far beyond aesthetics. Organization boosts productivity, reduces stress, and creates a positive environment for employees and customers alike. For businesses like the gym and doctor’s office, the changes that were implemented have already translated into higher customer satisfaction and smoother operations.
In today’s competitive market, businesses can’t afford to overlook the power of organization. Whether you’re managing a bustling medical practice or a thriving fitness center, investing in tailored organizational solutions is an investment in your business’s future.
At Closettec, we take pride in designing and delivering high-quality, custom storage solutions that enhance the lives of our clients. For over 35 years, our family-owned business has built a reputation for craftsmanship, innovation, and exceptional service.
Since 1989, Closettec has been a trusted name in custom closet design, providing homeowners, builders, and designers with innovative storage solutions. 5 Great Spots for Irish Eats
BY RYAN LOUGHLIN
With just about everything turning a shade of green this month, we’ve decided to lean into the fun and festive theme by tracking down some of our favorite spots to chow down on Irish eats, covering everything from the super traditional dishes such as shepherd’s pie to the absolutely-not-authentic faves like Irish nachos. All are welcome in our world – as long as they are tasty! We recommend you dig in on any and all of the following:
Kim Marie’s Eat n’ Drink Away (Asbury Park) — The sister restaurant to the uber-popular Asbury staple Johnny Mac’s, Kim Marie’s offers a similar vibe, packed floor-to-ceiling with their signature brand of kitsch that feels like a twisted merger between Disney World’s Haunted Mansion and an active garage sale. But Kim Marie’s boasts a more relaxed pace
than Johnny Macs, with a legit menu of bar grub. But for Blarney’s sake, whatever you do, don’t miss out on the Irish Egg Rolls, a deliciously non-traditional dish involving corned beef, cabbage, bacon, potatoes, and Swiss cheese served with a fabulous mustard sauce. KimMariesEatnDrinkAway.com
St. Stephen’s Green (Spring Lake) — Arguably the most authentic Irish Pub in all of New Jersey, St. Stephen’s Green Publick House is a gloriously warm and welcoming place to grab a pint and a plate of bangers and mash or their Po’ Irish Lad — a baguette containing ale battered shrimp topped with Irish Cheddar, tartar sauce and cole slaw. Live bands are the norm here, including the highly festive and utterly authentic Irish group, The Bantry Boys, who never fail to bring the cheerful vibe to a level of near exuberance. A
The Black Swan Public House Fish and Chips
word of caution though – on St. Patrick’s Day, St Stephen’s Green can be PACKED. So, if you are a fan of the crowds and energy of the holiday, have at it. If not, plan your visit for the weekend before to take in everything in a slightly less chaotic state. SSGPUB.com
The Dublin House Restaurant & Pub (Red Bank) — What’s not to love about the Dublin House? Located smack dab in the middle of Red Bank’s bustling downtown, the Dublin House has been a popular watering hole for years. Its exterior entrance is notable, with its massive white pillars which stand in stark contrast to what you might expect from a typical Irish bar. Inside is cozy and offers the perfect spot to settle in for a night of laughter and good times with friends. The menu is dotted with Irish creations like shepherd’s pie, bangers and mash, corned beef as well as some decidedly faux Irish offerings such as the Irish Nachos, a mash of crispy potatoes, with melted smoked gouda, Irish cheddar, green onions, sour cream and chopped tomatoes. For those looking for a greatest hits of Irish classics, you can’t go wrong with the Irish Surf and Turf, a sampling of bangers and mash, fish and chips and shepherd’s pie served with tartar sauce and onion au jus. TheDublinHouse.co
The Black Swan Public House (Asbury Park) – Located in the space that formerly housed Modine, Chef James Avery’s Black Swan Public House is an utterly enchanting space inspired by the neighborhood pubs and inns often

found in England and Ireland. As you wander through it, surprises pop up around every corner – a breathtaking main bar with ornate flowers and branchwork quickly twists over to a downright dainty tea room, while the main dining room with its high ceilings has an almost NYC trendiness to it that fits in perfectly in Asbury Park. And the masculine coziness of the vault room in the back simply must be seen in person to be fully appreciated. And with them now being open for lunch as well as dinner, it’s easier than ever to find a time to pop in.
You can order up a variety of Irish favorites here, but we were so pleasantly surprised at the fish and chips, it’s hard to not insist that be your choice. An utterly massive (and we mean MASSIVE) piece of haddock gets dredged in batter and deep fried before being paired with a truly proper stack of steak fries, mushy peas and a side of homemade tartar sauce. It’s visually stunning and easily enough for two and maybe even three meals. TheBlackSwanAP.com
McDonagh’s Pub (Keyport) — One of Keyport’s goto spots for decades, McDonagh’s Pub stands out instantly thanks to its striking red exterior. If that wasn’t eye-catching enough to make you march right in, the fabulous menu of bar food and Irish-themed favorites such as fish and chips and shepherd’s pie should do the trick. Add to that an impressive selection of beers on tap and signature cocktails and you have reason to dance a jig right on the spot. McDonaghs.com

Belmar Lake Como St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee Honors Matthew Lee and Fran Griffin as 2025 Grand Marshals
BY MATT DOHERTY

The Belmar and Lake Como Saint Patrick’s Day Parade will make its much-anticipated return for the 52nd year on Sunday, March 2, 2025, bringing the community together to celebrate Irish heritage with music, pageantry, and tradition. The parade will step off at 12:30 PM, proceeding down Main Street from Lake Como through Belmar, marking yet another milestone in the event’s rich history. This year’s parade will have added significance as it pays tribute to two longtime contributors to the Parade Committee—Matthew Lee of Middletown and Fran Griffin of Seaview Island, Neptune—who have been named as the Grand Marshals for the event.
“Both Fran and Matt are a tremendous asset to the Parade itself and the Irish American community. They are both people we count on year after year. They both donate countless hours each parade season,” said Eugene “Chip” Cavanagh, Parade Chairman.
In addition to celebrating the contributions of Lee and Griffin, this year’s parade will also serve as a tribute to the late Bob Jenkins, who was honored as Grand Marshal in 2011. Jenkins’ dedication to the community and the Belmar parade will be commemorated, ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire future generations.
Matthew Lee: A Passionate Advocate for Irish Culture
The executive board of the Belmar and Lake Como Parade Committee proudly selected Matthew Lee of Port Monmouth, Middletown, as one of this year’s Grand Marshals. A dedicated member of both the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh and the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) in Monmouth County, Lee has spent years fostering Irish traditions and strengthening community bonds.
Lee’s Irish heritage is deeply rooted in his family, with his paternal grandparents hailing from Carrick-on-Shannon, County Roscommon, and Cloonagh, Curry, County Sligo. His maternal grandfather’s lineage extends to County Cork. His wife, Mary, also has strong Irish ancestry from Counties Monaghan and Kerry. Together, the couple has instilled a love for Irish culture in their two sons, Jack and Michael, and maintained close ties with family in Ireland.
Born in Jackson Heights, Queens, and raised in Old Bridge, Lee’s introduction to Irish culture began as a high school student when he became involved with the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh Pipe Band. This passion led him to become an active member of the Old Bridge chapter, where he continues to volunteer his time and talents.
Lee’s professional journey has been equally impressive. A graduate of Rowan University, he started his career in design at Sotheby’s before transitioning to advertising. His expertise in healthcare advertising has led him to a successful 20-year career in the field. Today, he serves as Associate Creative Director at Pryme, a patient-focused agency based in Morristown, NJ.

Despite his demanding career, Lee remains committed to his passion for the bagpipes, playing with the Friendly Sons Pipe Band and contributing his design talents to various organizations. He has played a crucial role in the creation of the Belmar Parade ad journal and has been actively involved in the parade committee for nearly 15 years. Additionally, Lee has dedicated significant time to volunteering for the ALS Association, Greater Philadelphia Chapter, in honor of his father, who passed away from ALS when Lee was just 15 years old.
Fran Griffin: A Lifelong Commitment to Irish Heritage and Community Service
Joining Lee as Co-Grand Marshal is Fran Griffin, whose devotion to Irish culture, healthcare advocacy, and volunteer work has made her a standout figure in the community.
Griffin’s Irish roots trace back to Counties Cork, Galway, Meath, and Roscommon. Raised in Wharton, NJ, she grew up in a household where Irish traditions were cherished. Her father, Edward Griffin, was one of the found-
ing members of the Irish American Association of Northwest NJ and played a pivotal role in launching Wharton’s first Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in 1979. That same year, Griffin and her siblings proudly carried the parade banner, marking the beginning of her lifelong commitment to Irish heritage.
Since 2004, Griffin has been an integral part of the Belmar and Lake Como Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Committee. She has volunteered at numerous fundraisers, organized the Evening of Irish Culture from 2011 to 2016, and played a key role in managing the parade’s social media presence. Since 2015, she has served as the parade announcer, a role she cherishes, particularly when recognizing family members marching in the parade.
Beyond her contributions to the parade, Griffin has had a distinguished career in healthcare. She began as a volunteer at a local hospital and later trained as an EMT before becoming a Registered Respiratory Therapist. Her work in hospital administration has taken her around the world, including positions in the United States, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Qatar, and Australia. Currently, she oversees quality programs for the Infectious Diseases Society of America while continuing her work as an independent consultant.
Griffin’s passion for genealogy has allowed her to trace her family’s Irish lineage, leading her to reconnect with relatives in Kilconnell, County Galway, in 2022. This year, she will carry a treasured family heirloom in the parade: her great-great-grandfather’s blackthorn shillelagh walking stick, the same one her father carried in Wharton’s inaugural parade in 1979.
In addition to her work with the parade, Griffin has served as chair of the NJ Irish Festival Committee and has been actively involved with organizations such as the Irish American Cultural Institute Jersey Shore Chapter and the St. Vincent de Paul Society Belmar. She is also a dedicated parishioner at St. Rose Church and a proud member of the Manasquan Elks Lodge 2534.
A Community Tradition Continues
The Belmar Lake Como Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Committee remains dedicated to celebrating Irish heritage and fostering community connections. The annual parade, held on the first Sunday of March, honors Saint Patrick and showcases a vibrant display of music, dance, and cultural pride. The parade will commence at 22nd Avenue and Main Street in Lake Como and travel north through Belmar, concluding at Sixth Avenue and Main Street, also known as Dave Stanley Way.
For more information about the parade, visit www.belmarparade.com or contact 732-280-2648.
As Grand Marshals, Matthew Lee and Fran Griffin embody the spirit of the Belmar and Lake Como Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, ensuring that Irish culture and tradition continue to thrive for generations to come. With their leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to community service, the 2025 parade promises to be a celebration to remember.

What it means to run a parade…
With so many parades happening around Monmouth County, one might wonder how such a festive event can come together. We sat down with Garrett Giberson, the founder and president of the parade committee, to discuss how Asbury Park’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade got started and what it means and does for the community.
“This will be our 11th annual parade,” Giberson says, proudly. And that pride is warranted. At a time of year when many people are still hunkered down indoors hiding from the cold, he managed to create an outdoor event that has become one of the most popular of its kind in the area.
“I started the parade because I was out and about town, meeting different business owners, listening to different bartenders, servers and people, and the message I heard from them is that March is a slow time of the year for businesses,” he says. “I wanted to bring commerce to the city during a time of the year when business is usually slow. We also want to bring people to the city to showcase it and build up community. I think we’ve been successful in doing that.”
The Asbury Park St. Patrick’s Day Parade doesn’t just celebrate the Irish culture of Monmouth County – it also celebrates what makes Asbury Park special.
“The parade is always the second Sunday in March. It’s built

around what Asbury Park is about. We have a lot of diversity in our parade and a lot of musical acts. It’s a really fun, family-oriented event. We have bagpipers, we have different bands that participate, we have high school marching bands, we have classic cars, stilt walkers, different businesses that come in and have floats – all are welcome to be in it.”
It’s not just spectators of the parade that love it – the town, especially the businesses, are big fans as well. “The community response has been great. Every year it gets better and better. It also gives the community something to do when there’s nothing really to do. You’re not going to the beach in March. It brings the community out to see what’s going on and be together.”
Giberson lauds the St. Patrick’s Parade committee as well. “It’s not just me; it’s the people on the parade committee that make it happen – it’s all of us together. The help we get from the community, the donations we receive, the restaurants and bars that participate in hosting the fundraisers and donating the proceeds to parade, the general public – it’s everyone together.”

A Pub for the Publick
St. Stephen’s Green is as authentic as Irish gets at the Jersey Shore
BY RYAN LOUGHLIN
It’s not that hard to find an Irish pub at the Jersey Shore but finding one that feels truly authentic is a much trickier ask.
Plenty of spots throw an Irish-sounding name on the sign, a plate of fish and chips on the menu and a vaguely green color scheme throughout the interior and expect everyone with Irish eyes to be smiling. But few go the extra mile to offer an experience of true Celtic authenticity the way St. Stephen’s Green Publick House in Spring Lake does.
Named for a public park in Dublin, St. Stephen’s Green is perhaps the closest one can get to that city while keeping both feet firmly planted in Monmouth County. Irish flags fly outside beckoning passersby to stroll in for a pint, and once inside one of the most exquisitely cozy pubs presents itself in full visual glory.
Dark stained woods, mustard-colored walls, exposed stone and elaborate millwork are present throughout, with a large bar area featuring communal tables and a robust selec-

tion of Irish whiskeys and draught beers. Just adjacent to the bar is the main dining room, with the far area also serving as the performance space for various live music acts that are regularly a part of the routine at St. Stephen’s Green. And unlike most spots that feature live bands, it’s not just cover bands playing classic rock and Top 40. One can witness long-established live acts like the Bantry Boys performing traditional Irish music in all of its raucous joy on a regular basis here.
Beyond the main dining room, the restaurant snakes its way through a labyrinth of cozy nooks and crannies situated on various sub-levels, all of which enhance the atmosphere brilliantly, putting you in a relaxed and harmonious state before you even take your first sip of Guinness.
Speaking of Guinness, my wife and I started off our meal with a perfectly poured pint of it — the act of which is something of an art in itself — its crown of foam atop serving as a welcome mat for the famous stout. Guinness is intimidating

to a lot of people, but it shouldn’t be. Its deep, dark hue is a bit misleading, as it goes down surprisingly smooth and is never as thick and heavy as its appearance suggests.
The basket of fabulous Irish Soda Bread we were presented upon being seated was a nice touch. A full round of apps followed, with us opting for an order of Celtic Wings as well as the Irish Sausage Rolls. The wings can be had in a variety of styles including with a Dublin dry rub or glazed in an Irish Whiskey BBQ sauce, but we went with the classic buffalo. Heavily breaded and on the larger side, they came served with blue cheese and celery sticks. The Irish Sausage Rolls were a tasty and playful take on pigs in a blanket, swapping out the hot dogs for bangers, which were rolled in puff pastry and paired with whole grain mustard.
For our entrees, the choice was tough as there are as many temping non-traditional dishes as there are classic Irish ones, so deciding took us a while. Classics include Fish and Chips, Guiness Beef Stew, Chicken Murphy,
Bangers and Mash, as well as a full Irish Breakfast with scrambled eggs, roasted tomato, rashers, bangers, beans, boxty cakes, black and white pudding and stout and ale bread. In the end we chose the Shepherd’s Pie and had no regrets, its mix of ground beef, lamb and root vegetables in a savory gravy topped with clouds of whipped potatoes checked off every box we hoped it would. We also made our way to the sandwich section of the menu, throwing in an audible and subbing in corned beef for pastrami on the Clancy’s Red Reuben, which was topped with melted cheddar, sauerkraut and Russian dressing and served on rye with a nice side of steak fries.
Portions were more than plentiful, with each of us taking home as much in leftovers as we ate, meaning round two was a welcome lunch option the following day.
Though we were clearly too full to eat another bite, we simply could not resist ordering a dish of their Irish Bread and Butter Pudding, a warm and comfortingly cozy dessert fit for a freezing winter night. It was fabulously custardy
on the inside, nicely crusted on the exterior and came topped with a warm Irish whiskey sauce which brought any hopes of modesty and dessert-based restraint to a swift and abrupt cancellation. We left even fuller than we thought possible, and that was just fine with us.
The great thing about a truly authentic Irish pub such as this is that it lives its life as a chameleon. One could easily head here for a night out with the boys, knocking down round after round of stouts and ciders, while mere feet away, a family could just as easily enjoy it as a lovely spot for dinner on a Monday night or the perfect site to take Mom for brunch (their Irish Brunch is legendary here). And it goes without saying but finding a more appropriate and festive spot to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Monmouth County than at St. Stephen’s Green is simply not possible. It will be packed, it will be loud, and it will be perfect.

Diagnosing Common Vision Problems in Children
BY MAIA FRANCO
Vision problems in children are more common than many parents realize. Studies show that nearly one in four children experience some form of vision issue, ranging from nearsightedness to more serious eye conditions. Early detection and proper care are essential in preventing these issues from impacting a child's education and development. Additionally, when children participate in sports, the importance of protecting their eyes cannot be overstated. This March, we explore common vision problems in children and the role of sports glasses in safeguarding their eyes.
Common Vision Problems in Children
1. Nearsightedness (Myopia) is one of the most common refractive errors in children. Children with myopia can see nearby objects clearly, but distant objects appear blurry. As myopia often progresses during childhood, it is essential to diagnose it early to prevent further deterioration of vision. Regular eye exams are crucial for identifying myopia, as the symptoms can be subtle and easy to overlook.
2. Farsightedness (Hyperopia) occurs when a child has difficulty seeing close-up objects. While mild hyperopia might not cause noticeable issues, more severe cases can lead to eye strain, headaches, and difficulty focusing on schoolwork or reading. As with myopia, regular eye exams are vital in identifying farsightedness early.
3. Astigmatism is caused by an irregularly shaped cornea, resulting in distorted or blurry vision. Children with astigmatism may have trouble seeing clearly at both near and far distances. This condition often goes unnoticed in the early years since children may not realize their vision is compromised. It's essential to detect astigmatism early, as it can affect a child’s learning and daily activities.
4. Amblyopia (Lazy Eye) occurs when one eye has poorer vision than the other, which can lead to a loss of depth perception. Often, this condition develops in early childhood and can result in permanent vision impairment if not treated. Treatment for amblyopia may include patching the stronger eye to encourage the weaker eye to work, as well as corrective lenses.
5. Strabismus (Crossed Eyes) occurs when the eyes are misaligned and point in different directions. This condition can affect one or both eyes, leading to double vision or poor depth perception. Strabismus can be treated with corrective lenses, eye exercises, or in some cases, surgery.
While managing vision issues in children is important, ensuring that children have the necessary protection for their eyes
when participating in sports is equally critical. Sports activities involve movement, contact, and sometimes physical collisions, making eye protection essential for preventing injury.
Why Sports Glasses Are Necessary
Children’s sports often involve fast-moving objects, high-impact activities, and environments that could lead to accidents. A blow to the eye can lead to serious injuries, including corneal abrasions, retinal detachment, or even permanent vision loss.
Sports glasses are designed to offer impact resistance, protecting the eyes from accidental collisions. These glasses are made from durable, lightweight materials such as polycarbonate lenses, which are much stronger than regular eyeglass lenses. They also have shatter-resistant properties, reducing the likelihood of injury from broken glass.
Safety and Preventing Eye Injuries in Sports
In addition to wearing sports glasses, parents and caregivers should encourage safe play to minimize the risk of eye injuries. Here are a few tips for ensuring eye safety in children's sports:
1. Choose Age-Appropriate Sports Equipment to ensure that children are using equipment that is suitable for their age and size. Properly fitting helmets, face masks, and protective eyewear can prevent eye injuries in high-impact sports like hockey, football, and lacrosse.
2. Emphasize Safety Rules and educate children about the importance of safely following the rules. Many sports leagues have specific rules in place to protect athletes, such as mandatory face shields or goggles in certain sports.
3. Monitor for Signs of Vision Problems. If a child complains of blurry vision, difficulty seeing at a distance, or headaches while playing sports, it may indicate an underlying vision issue. Regular eye exams are essential to detect these issues early, ensuring that children have the best possible vision to excel in sports.
4. Routine Eye Exams with a pediatric optometrist or ophthalmologist are essential in diagnosing any vision issues early. An eye care professional can provide recommendations for corrective lenses, including prescription sports glasses if necessary.
A Glimpse into Eye Conditions and Care
BY MAIA FRANCO

Our eyes are essential to how we interact with the world, yet many of us take them for granted—until a problem arises. Eye conditions can significantly impact quality of life. Luckily, modern medicine has made remarkable strides in both diagnosing and treating these conditions. From common issues to innovative treatments, we explore the eye care that is changing lives. If you are at risk for any of these conditions, seek assistance with a medical profession, such as those at Atlantic Eye Care, which has four locations in Monmouth County.
Common Eye Conditions
1. Presbyopia is an age-related condition that affects nearly everyone over the age of 40. It results in difficulty focusing on close objects due to the lens of the eye becoming less flexible over time. Many people rely on reading glasses or bifocals to compensate, but treatments such as multifocal contact lenses or laser surgery are becoming increasingly popular to address this issue.
2 Cataracts are one of the most common age-related eye conditions, characterized by the clouding of the eye's lens. This leads to blurred vision, glare, and, eventually, blindness if left untreated. Cataract surgery, which involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial one, is a highly effective treatment. In fact, cataract surgery is one of the most common surgeries performed worldwide, with success rates exceeding 95%.
3. Glaucoma refers to a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, often due to high intraocular pressure. It is one of the leading causes of blindness globally, with many sufferers unaware of the condition until significant damage has occurred. Early detection through regular eye exams is crucial for managing glaucoma. Medications, laser treatments, and surgery can help lower eye pressure and prevent further damage.
4. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss in individuals over 50. It affects the macula, the central part of the retina, leading to blurry or distorted central vision. While there is no cure for AMD, treatments like anti-VEGF injections, laser therapy, and lifestyle changes can help slow its progression and preserve vision.
5. Diabetic Retinopathy is a condition in which high blood sugar damages the blood vessels in the retina. If untreated, it can lead to vision loss. Regular eye exams are essential for people with diabetes to catch any signs of retinopathy early. Treatment options include laser surgery, injections, and, in some cases, vitrectomy.
Innovations in Eye Care
While these eye conditions are prevalent, the exciting news is that advancements in eye care technology are making treatments more effective, less invasive, and more accessible. Here are some of the most innovative developments transforming eye health:
1. LASIK Eye Surgery (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis) surgery has been a game-changer for individuals with refractive vision problems like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. This procedure uses a laser to reshape the cornea, enabling light to enter the eye properly and improving vision.
2. Robotic-Assisted Cataract Surgery has revolutionized the way cataracts are treated. Using advanced robotics, surgeons can perform the procedure with increased precision, leading to more accurate lens positioning and a quicker recovery time. This technique is also ideal for patients with complex cases or those who require special attention due to other eye conditions.
3. Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Eye Exams is rapidly transforming the way eye care professionals diagnose and monitor eye conditions. Machine learning algorithms can analyze retinal images with incredible accuracy, identifying early signs of diseases like diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. By enabling earlier detection and personalized treatment plans, AI may help prevent vision loss before it becomes irreversible.
4. Retina Implants and Bionic Vision can restore some vision for individuals with severe retinal conditions like retinitis pigmentosa or age-related macular degeneration. By bypassing damaged retinal cells and directly stimulating the optic nerve, these devices offer a new form of sight for patients who previously had no options for restoring vision.
Hundreds Show Their Support for LADACIN Plunge
LADACIN Network, a local nonprofit, proudly announced the success of their Annual Plunge, which was held on January 18 and raised over $94,000. Around 200 participants braved the waves to show their support for LADACIN. All proceeds from the event support the J. Michael Hartnett Memorial to benefit LADACIN Network.
Leggetts Sand Bar in Manasquan hosted the party and provided a delicious buffet lunch. Prizes were awarded for the most creative costumes. Contributing to the festive spirit of the occasion, the Pipes and Drums of the Jersey Shore Shillelagh Belmar, traditionally leading the procession to the ocean, played their bagpipes at the party. 95.9 The Rat’s radio personality Gotts entertained the party goers as the long-standing emcee of the LADACIN Plunge.

The event supports LADACIN’s educational, therapeutic, social, residential and support services for over 3,500 infants, children and adults with complex physical and developmental disabilities or delays living in Monmouth and Ocean Counties.
Since the Inaugural Plunge 17 years ago, the annual event has raised over 1.4 million dollars. Over the past several years, the proceeds have helped fund the vital programs and services provided to individuals with disabilities.

Joseph J. Russell, Jr., Esq., of Manasquan, Shareholder and Chair of the Family Law Department at Wilentz, Goldman & Spitzer P. A., Eatontown, and Woodbridge, founded and continues to coordinate the event along with his wife Jeanette. Why Boarding Your Dog with a Professional Facility Is the Best Choice for Spring Break
Spring break is a time for relaxation and adventure, but for pet owners, travel plans come with an important question— who will take care of your dog while you’re away? While asking a friend or family member might seem like an easy solution, a professional boarding facility offers unmatched safety, care, and comfort for your furry companion. Below, we answer common questions about why professional boarding is the best option for your dog this spring break.
Q: Why should I board my dog at a professional facility instead of leaving them with a friend or pet sitter?
A: Professional boarding facilities provide structured care, experienced staff, and a secure environment tailored to your dog’s needs. Unlike a friend or pet sitter who may have limited availability, boarding facilities ensure constant supervision, scheduled meals, regular exercise, and social interaction. Your dog will receive personalized attention, playtime, and a safe place to stay while you enjoy your vacation worry-free.
Q: My dog has special dietary or medical needs. Can a boarding facility accommodate them?
A: Yes! Reputable boarding facilities are equipped to handle special dietary requirements and administer medications as needed. Whether your dog requires a specific feeding schedule, prescription food, or daily medications, professional caregivers ensure their needs are met with precision and care. Many facilities also have on-call veterinarians to address any medical concerns.
Q: Will my dog experience stress or anxiety while boarding?
A: It’s normal for dogs to take some time to adjust to a new environment, but professional facilities take extra steps to make their stay comfortable. Familiar routines, engaging activities, and caring staff help dogs feel at ease. Many facilities encourage bringing your dog’s favorite blanket or toy to provide a sense of home, making the transition smoother.
Q: How far in advance should I book a boarding reservation for spring break?
A: Spring break is a popular travel time, so it’s best to book as early as possible. Many top-rated boarding facilities fill up quickly, especially during peak vacation seasons. Making a reservation in advance ensures your dog has a spot at a trusted facility, giving you peace of mind as you plan your trip.
Q: Where can I find a top-quality boarding facility for my dog this spring break?
A: Green Leaf Pet Resort provides premier boarding services designed for your dog’s safety, comfort, and enjoyment. With spacious accommodations, personalized care, and plenty of playtime, your pup will have just as much fun as you do on vacation!

Just Like Heaven: The Kur Experience in Asbury Park
BY EMMA SYLVIA
It’s a Monday morning in the dead of winter and the one assignment from Community Magazine that crosses the line for me finally lands on my desk — The Kur Wellness massage story. With brazen boldness unbeholden to most, and a heavy sigh and heart, I pick up the phone and call Troy Teeboom, the owner of Kur Wellness Studios in Asbury Park.
“Troy,” I say, “I really gotta take one for the team. My boss wants me to come down to Kur and get one of your services. I was thinking about a massage?”
Troy laughs, “Really? This must be so hard for you!”
I nod, and with a back that should not be possessed by a 23-year-old, I inquire, “What’s the best massage for someone with a bad back?”
The walk to Kur Wellness Studios, located on Bond Street in Asbury Park just a block or two from the bustle of Cookman Avenue, is a short but nice one. It seems to prelude the expe -
rience that’s due to follow – it’s a bright, sunny day, lending the winter season to not be entirely frigid; parking this time of the year in Asbury Park isn’t entirely impossible, and I get a spot right out front of the store; walking up to the door, I get a compliment on my sweater (it’s black with the design of a OUIJA board on it). Headed into the store, I met my masseuse (as recommended by Troy), Lauren.
It’s been suggested I try the deep-tissue massage, which is focused on relaxation, deep-tissue bodywork to encourage health and wellness (again, read: bad back). It lasts 60 minutes, starting while lying on my stomach. I imagined that it would be difficult for me, a chronic talker, to relax while my masseuse, Lauren Hoffman, began. However, after about 40 minutes (it was quite easy to lose track of time), she requested that I move onto my back, and I groggily blinked and asked her to repeat herself. With medita-
tive music playing, my shoulders were tackled (as well as the knots in them that, after a few years, were finally provided with some relief). The entire experience was nothing short of fantastic, and both rejuvenated and relaxed me for the rest of the workday.
The staff of Kur, especially Hoffman, were friendly and accommodating. It’s made clear what the expectations for the massage are, and I’m asked if there are any areas that might be more sensitive than others to be aware of. The heat of the room and the music are able to be adjusted upon request, but I was comfortable with the default that they had.

Hoffman, when asked about her time at Kur, said, “Working at Kur is great; I feel very heard and respected as an employee. They are always willing to train and educate when someone needs help, making therapists more comfortable and confident with services. I’ve been at Kur for almost a year and can see myself there for a long time.”
My experience at Kur was facilitated by Teeboom. He’s ecstatic about Kur and the work they’ve done over the last decade (they will celebrate their 10th anniversary in June, an impressive feat for a business in a town where things often come and go quickly.) The location is prime, and Teeboom is happy to be an Asbury Park business.
“The inspiration for being in Asbury Park is that I live there, and I knew something like this was needed,” Teeboom elaborates. “It’s my first entrepreneurial endeavor; I did it because I personally like these kinds of services and wanted to bring that to the com-
munity.” He hopes to one day open a second location, but is content with progress so far. The thing he’s most proud of, however, is his team, which includes massage therapists like Hoffman.
“I believe they’re the most talented in the industry. I’m lucky to have them,” he says.
Through my experience, I saw firsthand the uniqueness that Kur possesses and the accommodation that they are willing to go for the customer. Teeboom elaborates on what he thinks makes Kur special, pointing to having a yoga room that doubles as a personal training gym. Being versatile is crucial for Kur, and Teeboom ensures that the experience there is fit for anyone.
“I feel like I’ve embraced the diversity of Asbury Park,” he says. “It’s pampering, but not so traditional where it

could feel uncomfortable.” He says that people go to Kur for all sorts of services, from the yoga room, to providing workouts, and finding ways to change their course of wellness and adapt to a healthy lifestyle. “You can find it under one roof.”
Kur, has utilized both Eastern and Western methods for improving a body’s constitution. Teeboom points to Ayurveda, a traditional medicine of India, which translates to “the science of life.” It focuses on one’s energy in a holistic way. “It’s nurturing, healthy, and customized. That’s what makes Kur different.”
With a plethora of services, I’m looking forward to returning to Kur to try a different approach. If you’d like to check them out for yourself and get the Kur experience, visit www.kurstudios.com
Buying New Jersey Car Insurance: Beware of the “Limited Tort” Option
BY JUSTIN DRAZIN, ESQ.
In New Jersey, car insurance policies come with an important choice that can significantly impact a driver’s legal rights after a motor vehicle accident: the “limited tort” or “verbal threshold” option versus the “full tort” option. While the limited tort option generally offers lower premiums, it restricts an injured person’s ability to recover damages for pain and suffering, presenting significant legal challenges for claimants seeking compensation after a crash.
Understanding the “Limited Tort” option is incredibly important for New Jersey drivers because oftentimes it limits a policyholder’s ability to sue for non-economic damages like pain and suffering unless their injuries meet specific thresholds defined under New Jersey’s Automobile Insurance Cost Reduction Act (AICRA). These thresholds typically require that the injury results in:
1. Death;
2. Dismemberment;
3. Significant disfigurement or scarring;
4. Displaced fractures;
5. Loss of a fetus; or
6. A permanent injury, meaning the body part or function will not heal to normal function even with medical treatment.
This limitation creates a high bar for claimants, often forcing them to rely on medical documentation, expert testimony, and other evidence to prove that their injuries surpass the verbal threshold.
Challenges for Claimants
1. Burden of Proof
For claimants, the limited tort option shifts the burden of proof onto them to establish that their injuries meet one of the statutory categories. Insurance companies often dispute claims, arguing that the injuries do not qualify under the verbal threshold for a claimant to re -

cover money damages. This can lead to lengthy and costly litigation, requiring extensive medical evidence and expert opinions to substantiate claims.
2. Interpretation of Permanent Injury
One of the most litigated aspects of the limited tort threshold is the definition of “permanent injury.” Insurance companies often challenge the permanency of injuries, using their own medical experts to argue that a claimant’s condition does not meet any of the AICRA thresholds listed above. For claimants, this creates a legal hurdle, as they must present compelling medical evidence and expert testimony to counter such arguments.
3.
Exclusions and Ambiguities
In some cases, injuries that seem significant to a claimant may not fit neatly into the statutory categories, leading to legal ambiguity. For example, chronic pain or soft tissue injuries, which can severely impact quality of life, may not meet the threshold unless they are coupled with objective evidence of
permanence. This can leave claimants with significant hardships but no recourse for non-economic damages.
4. Financial Implications
Litigation costs associated with proving a verbal threshold injury can be prohibitive, particularly for claimants already facing medical bills and lost wages. The need for expert testimony and detailed medical evaluations often requires substantial upfront investment, making it challenging for some claimants to pursue their claims fully.

Difficult Negotiation
The limited tort option can also weaken a claimant’s negotiating position in settlement discussions. Knowing the difficulty of overcoming the verbal threshold, insurance companies may take a “no pay” position, refusing to make a settlement offer, and betting that a jury will find that the claimant does not vault the threshold to recover money damages at trial.
Choosing the limited tort option when buying New Jersey car insurance may seem appealing due to the lower premiums, but it comes with significant legal challenges for claimants involved in motor vehicle accidents. Proving that injuries meet the verbal threshold requires substantial evidence, medical documentation, and legal expertise. Claimants should weigh the potential risks and benefits of this option carefully and consult with experienced legal professionals, so they can make an informed decision on the best coverage options for themselves and their families.

Belmar Historical Society Celebrates 10th Anniversary
The Belmar Historical Society (BHS) proudly marks the 10th anniversary of its Archives and History Museum, a testament to the community’s dedication to preserv ing Belmar’s rich past. Over the past decade, this all-volunteer organiza tion has transformed a vision into a thriving resource for history enthu siasts and residents alike.
“To create something from nothing was a monumental task,” the BHS shared. “Without your in terest and support, we would not be here! People like you keep us going by participating in events, attending pro grams, or donating to our mission—all of which are vital to our existence.”
The museum’s journey has been remark able, thanks to the generosity of the community. Highlights of the past year include the creation of the “Board walk Stroll” signs along the beachfront. These signs feature archival photos showcasing Belmar’s historical charm from each location, offering residents and visitors a unique perspective on the town’s heritage.

The BHS also curates monthly mini exhibits at Borough Hall, provides digital access to historical documents and newspapers via its website, and assists individuals in researching their homes, families, landmarks, and memorable events.
Looking ahead, the BHS invites the public to explore the museum, attend one of its popular “Speaker Series” programs, or participate in upcoming events for 2025. Topics in the past have included the history of railroads, notable inventions, classic diners, and the Lenape heritage, with more exciting presentations on the horizon.
The BHS Archives and History Museum is located at 900 E Street in the Annex of the Historic Union Firehouse. It is open to the public on Mondays from 2–4 p.m., Thursdays from 10 a.m.–12 p.m., and every second Saturday of the month from 1–3 p.m. (Note: Closed Saturdays in July and August).

Asbury Sites Used as Filming Location for Upcoming Springsteen Biopic
Asbury Park was recently the site of filming for the upcoming Bruce Springsteen biopic, “Deliver Me From Nowhere.” The film crew set up at various well-known spots around town, including The Stone Pony, the Carousel House (where several carnival rides were set up specifically for the film) and Frank’s Deli. Springsteen himself dropped by the set several times throughout filming while local onlookers waited patiently hoping to catch a glimpse of The Boss in person.
Long Branch Firefighter Aids in Off-duty Rescue
Probationary Firefighter Dillon Smart, a BIG pickleball guy, was at a pickleball tournament in Tinton Falls recently. During one of the matches, Smart noticed a player had collapsed on the ground and was unresponsive. Dillon immediately ran over to assist the man and was accompanied by another good Samaritan and a retired medical doctor.
They assessed the patient and found a faint pulse. They started rescue breaths and chest compressions while Dillon ran to retrieve the AED (Automated External Defibrillator) and place it on the victim’s chest. The AED detected a shockable rhythm and delivered its first shock.
They continued rescue breaths while the AED reevaluated. Another shock was then delivered and the patient regained a strong pulse and started showing signs of consciousness. We are proud to report the patient was revived and transported to a hospital for definitive care.
Congratulations to Dillon. He has honored the highest traditions of the fire service.

At Trinity Hall, Riano-Cruz is a leader in Talk in Unity, the Latina affinity group on campus.
“Being awarded a QuestBridge scholarship to Stanford University means that I have proven to younger girls, like myself, that we can obtain the stars. It has always been my dream to become the representation that I needed to see when I was younger. The journey of achieving this dream was full of late nights, sacrifices, and moments of doubt,” Riano-Cruz expressed.
