living well
What is dementia? The word dementia describes a set of symptoms that may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problemsolving or language. There are many diseases that damage the brain and cause dementia, the most common of those being Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s Society
“We find that getting involved in activities helps our clients regain their independence” As the number of people living with dementia continues to grow, the need to change the way we think about this illness becomes ever more important. As dementia can be so hard for loved ones and friends to understand, those living with the illness can often feel scared and isolated. Sadly those living with dementia have a low self-reported quality of life with research from the Alzheimer’s Society revealing 61% had felt anxious or depressed recently and 40% had recently felt lonely. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Initiatives like Dementia Friends, which has so far taught over one million people about dementia and the small ways they can help, are educating communities about the illness and encouraging social inclusion. Those diagnosed with dementia are also being helped to live well with the support of projects designed to keep them active and engaged with the community. The message from health experts is clear: you can still do all the things you enjoy after a dementia diagnosis.
‘In those early stages after diagnosis it’s really important to keep your mind occupied and stimulated by setting yourself goals and engaging with your local community’, says Barbara Hurran, Team Leader at Dementia Connections, a free countywide service which offers support to those with dementia. ‘Getting out and about and joining in with an activity outside of the home, or on a oneto-one basis, is brilliant for building confidence and helps create a circle of friends, something that is so important when it comes to preventing loneliness and social isolation.’ The Alzheimer’s Society suggests keeping as active as you can, both physically and mentally, will bring benefits and help you retain skills and memory, boost your selfesteem and avoid depression. ‘We find that getting involved in activities also helps our clients regain their independence and encourages them to help with daily tasks,’ says Barbara. Dementia Connections, which is run by Age UK Essex and The Alzheimer’s Society, helps those living with dementia to rebuild their confidence, continue their hobbies and interests and be actively involved in their community. By providing encouragement and low-level support in or outside of the home, clients are helped to pursue activities of their choice and to engage in new ones within the community. ‘As well as helping our clients find new ways to enjoy their favourite hobbies, we also encourage them to try new ones,’ says Barbara. ‘We’ve tried everything from bowling and yoga to art classes and singing. We also go along to the local Dementia Café run by the Alzheimer’s Society and the Men In Sheds group. It’s wonderful that there’s such a wide variety of activities on offer as it means we can meet the individual needs of our clients.’

Are you one of the growing number of ‘silver splicers’ planning on tying the knot soon? Here’s our guide to an effortlessly stylish wedding day.
love let there be
For the first time in years, marriage is on the rise. It’s not surprising that those aged 25 to 29 accounted for the majority of ceremonies, but the biggest percentage rise comes from a rather more unexpected age group, the 65-69 year olds. Dubbed the ‘silver splicers’, statistics revealed the number of grooms in their late sixties increased by 25% while brides of the same age went up by 21%. It’s a heartwarming fact that most silver splicers are those who have found love for a second time but could it be that there are a few practical advantages to saying ‘I do’ too?

Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall
The Prince of Wales and Camilla married at Windsor Guildhall in a small, private civil ceremony. The Duchess wore an Anna Valentine dove-grey silk dress and matching coat decorated with beautiful gold embroidery. Instead of a veil, she opted for a striking Phillip Treacey fascinator.

Research shows getting married isn’t just a romantic way to seal your relationship – it has countless health and financial benefits too. When it comes to money, married couples can potentially save on inheritance tax, reduce their income tax bills and take advantage of passing on income from certain types of pension. Tying the knot also gives you greater legal rights if something happens to your partner.
Becoming a husband or wife will also boost your wellbeing. Research from the University of Warwick suggests marriage can reduce stress, help couples develop healthier habits and suppress bad ones. One study has gone so far as to say the impact of marriage on health and life expectancy, particularly in men, is almost equivalent to giving up smoking! So with all these reasons to celebrate, here’s our helpful guide to getting married in sophisticated silver splicer style.

Dame Helen Mirren and Taylor Hackford
After 11 years together, Dame Helen married her American film director partner on New Year’s Eve. Wills Week!
Up to
50%
off your Will!
5 – 9 October 2015
Age UK Essex Wills Week Over two thirds of people in the UK don’t have a will. Are you one of them? Wills are about the lives of the people you leave behind. Making sure your loved ones aren’t subjected to the pain of guessing your wishes. What happens if you die without a Will? Not making a Will can cause serious problems for those left behind. If you pass away without having made a Will, known as ‘intestate’, then there are rules in place which determine how your estate is divided up; by the order of surviving next of kin. Dying without a Will can mean that your money, personal belongings and even your home could go to the person you least want to have them and your loved ones could lose out, particularly if you are cohabiting.
Within your Will you can leave instructions to assist your family at what will be a difficult time for them. You can indicate what type of funeral you would like and choose who will be your Executors and put your wishes into effect. Can I use a DIY Will kit? Kits and guidebooks are useful aids for helping you think about the future, but they’re not a reliable solution. Many problems occur where these “Wills” are found to be invalid. Homemade Wills generally lack the required framework needed to make them legally binding. It’s very important a Will is executed properly as if the document you prepare is not correct, it could simply end up as just an expression of your wishes, with no legal standing.
To request the details of all participating solicitors please call 01245 207 065 or email jean.robinson@ageukessex.org.uk and quote "Age UK Essex Wills Week".
Isn’t it depressing to make a Will? Making a Will is no more morbid than choosing life insurance or a pension plan and is much easier to do than you might think. With the guidance of a reputable solicitor, the process is very simple and you will usually only need two appointments. The first appointment is to discuss the content of your Will, then a second visit to check the final document before it is signed. It really is that quick and easy. When should I make a Will? There is no time like the present! To mark Wills Week Age UK Essex has teamed up with solicitors from across the county to offer discounts on the cost of making a simple Will. Local firms are offering up to 50% off the cost of making a Will and have kindly agreed to make a donation to help support the valuable work of our Befriending and Advice services.

READING
Go Set A Watchman
fiction
by Harper Lee Cornerstone £18.99 Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird is one of the most iconic and widely read novels of the twentieth century, and this summer, 55 years after its original publication, a sequel is being published. After To Kill a Mockingbird was published in 1960, Harper Lee set aside Go Set A Watchman, and never returned to it. The original manuscript of the novel was considered to have been lost until the autumn of 2014, when Tonja Carter discovered it in a secure location where it had been affixed to an original typescript of To Kill a Mockingbird. Go Set A Watchman is set during the mid-1950s and features many of the characters from To Kill a Mockingbird some twenty years later. Scout (Jean Louise Finch) has returned to Maycomb from New York to visit her father Atticus. She is forced to grapple with issues both personal and political as she tries to understand both her father’s attitude toward society, and her own feelings about the place where she was born and spent her childhood.
Guy Martin: My Autobiography by Guy Martin Ebury £8.99 Guy Martin, international roadracing legend, maverick star of the Isle of Man TT, truck mechanic and TV presenter, lives on the edge, addicted non-fiction to speed, thoroughly exhilarated by danger. For the first time, here is the full story in Guy’s own words. From the boy who learned to prep bikes with his dad, to the spirited team mechanic, paying his way by collecting beer glasses in pubs, to the young racer at the start of his first race and the buzz he’s been chasing ever since. This thrilling autobiography is an intense and dramatic ride.
Mr Mercedes
fiction
by Stephen King Hodder and Stoughton £7.99 A cat-and-mouse suspense thriller featuring Bill Hodges, a retired cop who is tormented by ‘the Mercedes massacre’, a case he never solved. Brady Hartsfield, perpetrator of that notorious crime, has sent Hodges a taunting letter. Now he’s preparing to kill again. Each starts to close in on the other in a mega-stakes race against time.

For the first time in over 50 years the Ford Mustang is officially on sale in the UK. UK driving enthusiasts have been waiting for half a century for the Mustang to arrive on our shores, and now, the car that has captured the hearts and minds of the nation is finally here. The new Mustang, which is now available to order, is priced from £29,000 and is scheduled for UK deliveries in October.
The iconic car, which has featured in countless films, including Bond and the Fast and Furious franchises, has been given its first makeover since 2005. The all-new car is the first Mustang to be offered in right-handdrive and will come with a choice of two engines. The entry point in the range will be a new 2.3-litre fourcylinder turbo with 306bhp, while the
flagship version has a thumping 5.0-litre V8 with 420bhp and 400lb ft of torque. Both cars come with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, with the option of a six-speed automatic. There will also be two different body styles to choose from – a ‘fastback’ coupe, and a soft-top convertible.

w e i v e
So what is everyone saying about the new Mustang? BBC TopGear “If you always fancied a Mustang, this is the one that you buy without your petrolhead mates laughing at you. It’s really perfectly competent under any stony-hearted analysis, while still being able to paint a muscle-car grin clear across your face.”
What Car? “Based on our experience we’d struggle to recommend the 2.3 litre couple over its European rivals. However, the full-fat 5.0 litre V8 is a unique proposition. None of its rivals offers such a large engine, or quite so much power for less than £35,000. It looks and sounds amazing and is seriously quick.”
The Telegraph “As Marmite as it ever was. Mustang devotees will be dazzled by the way it drives, while others might never care to find out. The interior is also disappointing and you really do need the V8 for the authentic experience.”

watch As a nation we are passionate about our history, as the popularity of programmes such as 24 Hours in the Past and Downton Abbey demonstrate. We revel in stepping back in time, unleashing the rich heritage of Essex and paying our respects to those who fought and died in World War I and II. But what would happen if we lost the Roman remains of Colchester, the majestic halls of Audley End House or the hand written letters of World War II soldiers? This is why the Essex heritage industry has launched a new police initiative aimed at protecting our heritage, as well as encouraging members of the public who want to preserve community assets to get involved. Walking
back to happiness Often overlooked because of its simplicity, walking is a brilliant way for everyone to boost their health and wellbeing. Here’s an easy start guide to get you walking whatever your age and fitness.

Age UK Essex Magazine
‘Many people underestimate just how much difference walking every day can make to their health,’ says Holly Knott, a personal trainer at Virgin Active in Chelmsford. ‘Just 15 to 30 minutes of walking at a moderate pace each day can reduce the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and asthma. Walking is also classed as a weight bearing exercise and this type of training can help reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis. Walking stimulates and strengthens your bones, increasing their density which is key to warding off arthritis.’
Just being outside and moving is also incredibly beneficial to both your physical and mental wellbeing. ‘Being outside in the sunlight for 15 to 30 minutes a day can increase your levels of vitamin D which has an important role to play in the body’s bone health and immunity,’ explains Holly. ‘Studies also show that a short, brisk walk will boost your energy levels by increasing blood flow and circulation. Being active releases feelgood endorphins into the body that can reduce stress levels and anxiety’.

If you’re taking on longer distances, or have signed up for a fun run or sports event, it’s important to eat the right foods. ‘Simple, nutritious meals are best,’ says Holly and she recommends healthy carbohydrates that will release energy slowly. Why not try porridge for breakfast with chopped banana or apple and sultanas? ‘If you’re walking later in the day, a jacket potato with a low fat protein like tuna or chicken is good,’ suggests Holly.
● first steps Experts agree we should be walking 10,000 steps a day but it’s important to build up to this goal slowly and safely. To get the health benefits from walking, it needs to be of a moderate pace – that means you need to be walking fast enough to raise your heart rate.
If you need to refuel while you’re exercising, go for foods that are light but energy rich so you don’t feel full or sluggish – an apple, banana or some nuts and raisins are ideal. ‘It’s important to stay hydrated too,’ says Holly. ‘Stick to water or make your own energy drink by putting a pinch of salt and sugar into your water bottle with a slice of lemon or lime. This will help replenish the electrolytes expended through the race, especially if it’s hot and you tend to perspire a lot.’
ready. At first you may only be able to walk at a moderate pace for 10-minute bursts, but don’t worry, this will gradually improve and these short bursts are still beneficial.
‘But most importantly,’ Always says Holly, ‘remember to talk to your have fun! Listen to an doctor before you audiobook, hum along to embark on any your favourite songs or walk to a place you want new exercise to visit – whatever works programme for you, just make sure you
Aim to slowly build up the distance and pace yourself over time. Start each walk slowly and steadily increase your pace when you feel
After exercising you need to refuel your body to avoid your sugar levels dipping too low. ‘Try to have a high protein and carbohydrate meal,’ says Holly. ‘Eggs on toast with mushrooms and spinach is one of my favourites or a brown bread sandwich with ham or tuna and salad. Drink plenty of water too!’
enjoy your exercise. You’re much more likely to continue with exercise if you enjoy it.’

MONEY MATTERS... Pension reforms What do the recent pension changes mean for you and your family? Make sure you’re prepared for the changes by planning ahead and getting some expert advice.
The changes are designed to offer extra flexibility as to how we decide to use our pensions. Previously, taking a tax free cash sum and buying an annuity (a guaranteed income for life) was the only option for many of us. However the new rules mean that when we reach the age of 55, we can take responsibility for the money we have saved and access our pensions however we like. Some of us might make large, immediate withdrawals to pay off debts or take a holiday of a lifetime. Others
will leave the money untouched to meet the later cost of care or to leave a legacy to our children or grandchildren. This huge array of possibilities may sound incredibly enticing, but now more than ever, it’s essential to get some professional advice to ensure we make informed decisions which suit our particular situations. The extra flexibility we’ve been granted raises a huge number of questions. Can I withdraw my entire pension pot? Can I leave my pension pot to my loved ones? What are the tax implications? What if I’ve already bought an annuity? And I have several small pensions in different places, should I put them all together?

New pension rules which give us far greater flexibility over what we can do with our pension pots came into force in April 2015.
There are six key things to consider when turning our pension pot into retirement income:
1 2 3 4 5 6
The value of your pension pot What you can do with your pension How long your money needs to last How much money you’ll have in retirement Watch out for tax Look for the best deal
It can be very confusing. Making the correct retirement choice is likely to be one of the most important decisions you will ever need to make. If you have any questions regarding the new pension freedom rules then it is essential to obtain the right professional financial advice to ensure that you access your pension safely, without unnecessary costs and a potential tax bill. We at W B Baxter Ltd are Independent Financial Advisers, authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, register number 146480. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS...
The Care Act Major reform of the care system in England will launch the biggest shake-up for over 60 years. The introduction of the Care Act 2014 means we now have more choice and control over the care and support we receive. There are four major changes that directly impact older people:
● adapting homes
● Introduction of a national eligibility criteria which states when someone should be entitled to help (councils used to set their own criteria). ● Councils have a duty to offer schemes by which those who need to pay for residential care can obtain a loan from their local council, which is paid back from their estate after death. ● For the first time carers will have the same right to an assessment and support as the people they care for. ● Those who pay for their own care will be entitled to ask their local council for advice and information about the care system.
The ECL Equipment Service can help to adapt your home and make it safer by installing items such as grab rails and wet rooms, while it’s Telecare Response Service can provide equipment to detect falls, inactivity, smoke or gas. If you have a spell in hospital, the Reablement Service will help you get back on your feet. When you return home the team will be on hand to help you with daily tasks until you feel well enough to do them yourself.
● keeping active and independent ECL has 30 local Wellbeing & Activity Centres across the county, offering activities for adults with a range of needs. The centres offer a series of fun and inspiring things to do which are tailored to customers’ individual needs, aims and personal goals.
● in the community ECL also offers Outreach services to people who struggle to get out and about, socialise and do the things they enjoy. Support Assistants can help customers to access local facilities, helping to combat loneliness and isolation. Finally, its Sensory Service supports adults with sight loss, hearing loss or both. It helps to maintain their independence by developing daily living and communication skills, offering mobility training and providing a Sighted Guide Service.

To help protect people’s assets, a cap on care costs will be introduced in April 2016. The cap is set at £72,000 for over-65s and the cap for younger people has still to be finalised*. ECL (the care and wellbeing company), who support over 50,000 adults who have learning and physical disabilities, sensory impairments, or dementia, will be one of the service providers helping implement the changes. They offer a range of services designed to help people live active and fulfilling lives.

HELPING YOUR COMMUNITY
The kindness of strangers We regularly hear about the breakdown in society, lack of community spirit and the dwindling support from local authorities. But this is a story about the kindness of strangers, the fantastic work of Community Agents and how they worked together to change the life of a woman in need. Last year 72-year-old Rose Quadhidi’s life was turned upside down. Rose sadly lost her partner and then had to make the difficult decision to give up her home and move into sheltered accommodation. Rose arrived at Frank Bretton House in Ongar with just her clothes and her two beloved pet birds. Initially the move was a success. “Mine is the smallest flat in the complex, but I was so grateful to have my own place, I didn’t care how small it was,” she said. However it soon became clear her new home was not suitable. The step into the shower was too high for her to manage, and Rose had a nasty fall. It was evident the situation could not continue, something had to be done.
It was at this point Community Agent, Glenda Templeman intervened and set about resolving the problem. Glenda met Rose through social activities at Frank Bretton House. “When I met Rose it soon became clear that the issue with her bathroom was causing her some distress. I found out that the step into her shower was ten inches high and Rose was having difficulty getting in and out as she has trouble with her hip. She was reduced to strip washing, something nobody should have to do in this day and age,” said Glenda. “Originally I applied for a grab rail in the shower to help Rose get in and out, but when the contractor came to fit the rail he said the shower was not fit for
purpose and I should apply for a wet room to be installed.” So Glenda made a case to Epping Forest District Council for a wet room on the grounds of health issues and risk of injury. Her request was approved and within a couple of months, Rose had her wet room. “It’s changed my life,” said a grateful Rose. “Before I hated trying to get in and out of the shower, so gave up. Now it is just so nice to have a proper shower in the privacy of my own home. I can’t thank Glenda enough.” Through Epping Forest ReUse, and donations from other residents, Glenda helped Rose to furnish her flat which is now a comfortable home, allowing Rose to continue to live an independent life. She enjoys going into town to do her shopping and loves the weekly coffee morning Glenda has helped to organise at Frank Bretton House. “They are open to all seniors in Ongar and have helped bring residents at risk of social isolation together,” said Glenda. They take place every Tuesday between 10.30am and 12.30am and everyone is welcome.”
If you know someone like Rose who needs little help to remain independent, why not give the Community Agents a call: on 0800 977 5858. Alternatively email: enquiries@caessex.org.uk or visit: www.communityagentsessex.org.uk
Community Agents is a partnership between Essex County Council, the Rural Community Council of Essex (RCCE), British Red Cross, Age UK Essex and Neighbourhood Watch Essex (NhWE). It provides support to vulnerable older people and their informal carers within their own communities across the whole of Essex.
