Next phase of Herne Bay work underway Major city council improvements to the centre of Herne Bay are continuing with the start of work on a new town square at Wimereux Gardens. The creation of the new multi-purpose and flexible space will allow for a wide range of events such as themed markets, vintage car rallies and outdoor performances of theatre and music. It follows the recent resurfacing and relining of William Street car park with new pedestrian paths connecting to the town centre and improved lighting and drainage. The project, which will last around six to seven months, will also include enhancements to Beach Street and Lower William Street, both of which will be repaired and have new decorative surfacing, and work at the junction of Park Avenue, King’s Road and Dering Road to

improve safety and provide a better pedestrian route to the Memorial Park and railway station. The council’s Transport and Environment Manager, Richard Moore, said: “We’re pleased to be moving on to the next phase of this project – the creation of the new town square. This is something there has been a lot of support for in Herne Bay, and we hope it will provide a focal point for the community to come together and enjoy events and activities.” The contract has been awarded to Amey Construction and funding is coming primarily from the developers of the Altira business park.

Herne Bay Coastal Community goes from strength to strength over 20 local people in Herne Bay applied to become trustees of the Herne Bay coastal community to have a say in radical plans for how they intend to drive growth, jobs and prosperity. they, as HBcc, are now part of over 100 coastal communities across the country taking control of their futures. The plans lay out practical steps including regeneration, development, local business growth and entrepreneurialism leading to sustainable jobs creation which will help make Herne Bay a destination to live and work in for years to come. More than 11 million people live in coastal communities, from major cities to seaside villages. The tourism industry alone accounts for the employment of 250,000 people across 150 seaside resorts, and contributes £4 billion to the UK economy. The Government is supporting ‘local coastal community teams’ to help revive towns and deliver their plans for future economic growth with an initial £10,000 to kick-start work and providing expert guidance to help shape their own towns’ future prosperity. Josh Brown, Vice-Chair of the Herne Bay Coastal Community Team said “We were delighted to receive so many expressions of interest to represent the many community, business and charity groups in CT6. With such a broad representation of people who love Herne Bay and are passionate about its future, we look forward to continue working with those who live and work here to discover, discuss and agree regeneration projects, apply for funding and see through change leading to a more prosperous, safe and vibrant place to live, work, and visit.” 6 HBCM05 Magazine A/W.indd 6-7

Please mention

Further information 118 Coastal Community Teams were created last year and given a share of £1.18m to help drive forward coastal areas growth. The local economic plans submitted to Government by the teams cover areas including housing, business opportunities, jobs and skills, health and civic pride. Coastal Community Teams are just one of a number of initiatives launched by the government to boost the Great British Coast. The £120 million Coastal Communities Fund, established in 2012, has money going to projects in every region and country of the United Kingdom. So far it has created nearly 14,000 new jobs and over 10,000 training places. In addition 77 projects ranging from theatres to piers and lidos to lighthouses, received an addition share of £3 million in December to help restore them to their former glory. Due to the exceptional quality of the bids received, another £1 million coastal revival funding will be available in 2016 to 2017 for projects that narrowly missed out being selected. Further details will be announced in due course. Free parking in the coastal towns Motorists in Herne Bay and Whitstable can take advantage of free parking. At William Street car park in Herne Bay, the first two hours of parking each day are now free during the charging period of 8.30am to 8pm. For example: • If you arrive at 10am and leave at 1pm, you will only have to pay for one hour of parking • If you arrive before 8.30am you can stay until 10.30am without charge • If you arrive at 6pm your parking is free until 10.30am the next morning The free parking is being paid for from developer contributions from the Altira development in Beltinge. The city council’s project to resurface and reline William Street car park, provide a new pedestrian walkway and improve the lighting

and drainage is making good progress and should be finished by the middle of April. Meanwhile in Whitstable, parking is now free of charge until 10am every day in Gladstone Road, Gorrell Tank, Keam’s Yard, Middle Wall, Shaftesbury Road and Victoria Street car parks. This provides 90 minutes of free parking each day compared to before, when charging used to start at 8.30am. Canterbury City Council’s Transport and Environment Manager, Richard Moore, said: “We’re sure people will welcome the opportunity to visit the town centres and do some shopping without needing to pay for their parking.” Information is taken from www.canterbury.gov. uk for more information about this or any other local issues please visit the website.

Herne Bay Pier it seems that whenever visitors arrive on Herne Bay Pier, something new has been happening since their last visit. the Pier trust is always adding more and more activities and attractions to the pier, determined to bring this much loved local asset back to life again. in fact, Herne Bay Pier has become quite a talking point amongst other pier groups. Most significant was a visit here by Mr Simon Opie who has been one of the team spearheading the Hastings Pier rebuild. Last month we saw on the local news that Hastings Pier now has a galloper carousel like ours and they have not only built retail huts similar to ours, they even commissioned the Herne Bay Pier builder, Quinney, to construct them. During the Easter holiday, a stunning traditional galloper carousel arrived on our pier – a real piece of seaside heritage, providing fun and activities so that all members of the family can

The canopy and seating area built this time last year won on ITV Peoples’ Millions Lottery Funding now provide shelter from the elements for diners enjoying the wide range of hot and cold food and refreshments now on offer in the huts. It has always been the Trust’s commitment to offer start-up businesses a chance to try out their ideas in the low rental outlets on the pier and several former traders moved into larger shops as their businesses grew. This has been an exciting project and there are now 31 businesses running on the pier.

Currently, you can see the large sit-in fish and chip restaurant being built on the right hand side of the pier with an estimated opening date of July 1st. It will have a row of windows on the seaward side to allow diners to enjoy spectacular views over the harbour and it will serve top class fish and chips as Herne Bay folk are very particular about the quality of their fish.

enjoy the pier. The food shops have increased with a variety of quality meals and several new intriguing shops have opened. Children’s activities now include the boating pool, the helter-skelter and bouncy castle as well as the carousel. We are beginning to run out of space …… maybe we shall have to find the money to bring the building of a longer pier a bit sooner. 10 HBCM05 Magazine A/W.indd 10-11

Looking into the near future, we received more good news four weeks ago. Last winter, the Trust put in a bid for the government’s Coastal Revival Fund and we were delighted to hear this spring that we had been awarded £48,500 to put our designs and plans for a professional and attractive stage on the pier into practice. In order to complete the list of essential ingredients which contribute to and traditional vibrant pier, the Trust wanted to Magazine when responding to advertisements

Lessons now available in Whitstable!

We plan to have the shell-shaped stage with its retractable roof built for summer of 2017 and we shall be welcoming all enquiries from local musicians, dance, theatre, schools and performance groups who would like to contact us with a view to using the stage next year. It will be a mixture of community and commercial entertainment aimed at a wide range of audiences – lots of entertainment and something there to appeal to everyone. The town’s pier is now beginning to win accolades on Trip Advisor, the press and most importantly from the local residents. One current example is a two page spread in Prima magazine this month (June 2016). All the trustees and volunteers put their work and time in for free so every bit of support and approval the pier receives makes their efforts worthwhile. If you would like to join our band of volunteers you will be made most welcome.

Whitstable and Herne Bay Lions Club

Dates for your diary Regatta

Whitstable and Herne Bay Lions Club have preparations well under way for this year’s Regatta on August 6th and 7th; two days packed with fun, the live music of various bands, and a magnificent array of stalls and sideshows along Tankerton Slopes, plus all the fun of the fair brought by Traditional Fairground Amusements. Free entertainment for the children will include Uncle Myles’ Punch and Judy and Magic Shows. The EKHO re-enactment group will be back, the Dog Show and the Flypast by the Historic Spitfire plus an aerial display by Trig aerobatics.

At sea, Whitstable Yacht Club will be organising the sailing events and the local Lifeboat Service will demonstrate their skills at a seaborne rescue. There is also the return of the popular “Greasy Pole” contest.

Mike Shaw of Whitstable and Herne Bay Lions Club, said, ‘Each year people come out and support us, and we are very grateful to them. Although it involves a great deal of work behind the scenes, it also means that we can raise funds for the disadvantaged, whilst providing two days of fun for local people and visitors to Whitstable.

Classic Car Show The popular Classic Car Show will be held on Sunday, 21st August, on the slopes at Tankerton, Whitstable. Last year there were more than seven hundred vehicles on the beautiful greens overlooking the sea. There will also be live music, a retro market, Punch and Judy, a children’s fairground and refreshments. The entertainment starts around 10.30am. For more information about both events, call Mike Shaw, 01227 274313 or see the Lion’s website, www.whitstablelionsclub.org.uk

Herne Bay family can rely on Demelza a family from Herne Bay has spoken about the essential support they receive from Demelza Hospice care for children.

Hallie did get the life-saving treatment she needed – a bone marrow transplant that means her bones are now healthy, although they will always be fragile. But her sight cannot be restored, she remains at risk of recurrent infections which frequently land her in hospital, and neurological problems may lie ahead. So the respite care Hallie receives at Demelza Kent in Sittingbourne is a huge boost to the family, including her big brother Logan, aged eight. “Hallie loves it there and it is time for us to spend with Logan,” said Megan. “Usually when he sees me packing a bag it’s because Hallie is going into hospital and he has to go and stay with his grandparents, so it makes a big difference to him. 18 HBCM05 Magazine A/W.indd 18-19

The couple’s first bridge to cross was the discovery that Hallie, then five months old, was blind.

The diagnosis, when it came, left Ian and Megan with many unanswered questions. “There’s not enough known about osteopetrosis,” Ian said. “But we were told she could die before two, and that many children do not survive past 10 if they do not receive treatment.”

De so fam

Megan Janes’ and Ian Robb’s daughter Hallie, five, faces serious health challenges. She has osteopetrosis, a rare and life-limiting genetic condition that can result in bone fractures, restricted height, frequent infections, sight loss and hearing impairment.

“We decided it wasn’t the end of the world, we accepted that and carried on,” recalls Ian. “But Hallie was often poorly with what we thought were unrelated problems, and then, just after she started walking at 14 months, she had a light fall and broke her arm.”

w

“We can’t leave Hallie with anyone else. Her grandparents love being with her but her medical needs are too much for them and they would be scared to be in charge. To take her somewhere where the care team know exactly what they are doing means we can relax.

De De Elt sp to

“Depending on how Hallie feels, sometimes we all stay at Demelza and sometimes we leave her overnight and take Logan out to do something she couldn’t do, like ice skating. He actually likes it best when we all stay because there is so much for them to do and he loves it there as much as she does!” as a charity, not part of the nHS, Demelza relies on fundraising, donations and gifts in wills to raise over £10.5 million a year to support children like Hallie. if you could help by taking part in a fun event or joining the band of volunteers at Demelza, please visit www.demelza.org.uk or call 01795 845200.

We’re all about life – helping those who may not live a long life to live a full life. We’re here to provide compassionate and expert care for seriously ill babies, children, young people and their families - when they need it the most. We’re here to create precious moments and happy memories. In the family home or in our family hospices, Demelza Kent and Demelza SEL. And if time is tragically cut short, we’re still here. To help ease the family’s fear and anxiety and move forward from their loss. As a charity, not part of the NHS, Demelza is reliant on fundraising, donations and gifts in Wills to raise over £10.5million needed every year to provide care to seriously ill children and their family. Demelza Hospices – Our children’s hospices, Demelza Kent in Sittingbourne and Demelza SEL in Eltham, South East London, provide professional, specialist, one-to-one care and support and access to life-enhancing facilities, such as a hydrotherapy pool in Kent, and therapies for children and young people up to the age of 19. As a young person reaches adulthood, we’re here with advice and links to adult care providers for life after Demelza. Demelza Community – Demelza offers a community hospice at home service for children and young people up to the age of 19, providing therapies, respite and end-of-life care in the comfort of a child’s own home across East Sussex. Families supported by Demelza Community have use of our two hospices and as a young person reaches adulthood, we’re here with advice and links to adult care providers for life after Demelza. Kent Association for the Blind are you friendly, reliable and looking for flexible and rewarding volunteering opportunities in the canterbury, thanet, or Deal and Dover areas? The Kent Association for the Blind supports sight impaired people to live independent lives. We are currently seeking volunteers to help us with a range of activities from befriending to fundraising, and driving and escorting to delivering equipment. Last year our volunteers gave 38,000 hours of their time to help people with sight impairments stay mobile and independent, and we really need your help to assist as many service users as possible. We are urgently seeking volunteer befrienders in the Thanet area to visit sight impaired people in their own homes for a cup of tea and a chat. They may also accompany people on outings, visits to friends or attend appointments. A few of our volunteer visitors are asked to help with reading personal correspondence and help with light paperwork. It is a very rewarding role, and a fantastic opportunity to make new friends. A Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS), Volunteer Training and on-going support will be provided by the organisation for these roles. While owning a car is an advantage, opportunities are available throughout East Kent, with many locations being near or on a local bus or train route. Furthermore, we will reimburse you for your travel expenses/mileage at 40p per mile. Please contact East Kent Volunteer Coordinator Chenice Clarke on 01227 763366 or via email at chenice.clarke@kab.org.uk for an application form or more information.

The Project initially sought and supported purchasers from within the benefits and welfare system but Necessary Furniture revised the way it operates due to high demand. The recession saw many people not being able to afford good quality furniture so it is now able to offer the service to anyone who need it; examples are: people on benefits, low income families or individuals, students or young people moving into their own accommodation for the first time, young couples setting up their

The service offered to people in need cannot be beaten by any other Projects/organisations! Arrange to donate by calling the warehouse on Canterbury (01227) 712680. Herne Bay Boccia

Boccia (pronounced Bot-cha) is a Paralympic sport for athletes with disabilities that impact on motor skills. Boccia is a target ball sport and is in the same family as the French game of Boules/Petanque, or the British gameof Indoor Bowls and became a Paralympic event in 1984. The game is played sitting down, and the balls may be rolled, thrown or pushed with the foot. If a player’s disability is more severe an assistive ramp may be used. This means the game is ideal for wheelchair users, walking aid users etc. How to play Boccia Boccia can be played in teams of six, in pairs or singles. The game consists of six red balls, six blue balls and one white ball (the ‘jack’). The white jack ball is thrown first, followed by a coloured ball trying to get it as close to the white ball as possible. The opposition then throws their coloured ball, trying to get even closer to the white ball. Play continues until all the balls have been thrown. The winner/colour is whoever has the most balls closest to the white ball.

Boccia is a game for everyone, adult or junior, male or female and is a very pleasant social afternoon. Perhaps you think that playing a sport is not possible for you – I used to think like that too. When watching the London Paralympics I saw Boccia being played, I said to my husband “I could play that”. I was right too! Now we have Boccia in Herne Bay. I play every week, I love the sport and also the social aspect of playing Boccia too. Why not come along and give it a go – we never know what we can do until we give things a try”. Sheila appleton For more information please contact Sheila or Derek on 01227 375070 or 07880 594132 or sheilaetderek@gmail.com

Sun Safety Q Find out how to protect your skin in the sun

t

Skin should be protected from strong sunlight by covering up with suitable clothing, seeking shade and applying sunscreen. How long can I stay in the sun?

Sunscreen is not an alternative to covering up with suitable clothing and seeking shade, but it does offer additional protection if applied correctly. When buying sunscreen, make sure it’s suitable for your skin type and blocks both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. The sunscreen label should have: • the letters “UVA” in a circle logo and at least 4-star UVA protection • at least SPF15 sunscreen to protect against UVB Make sure the product is not past its expiry date. Most sunscreens have a shelf life of two to three years. Tips on applying sunscreen: • To be most effective, sunscreen should be applied liberally. The amount of sunscreen needed for the body of an average adult to achieve the stated SPF is around 35ml or 6 to 8 teaspoons of lotion. • If sunscreen is applied too thinly, it provides less protection. • If you’re worried you might not be applying enough SPF15, you could use a stronger SPF30 sunscreen. What are the SPF and star rating?

The sun protection factor, or SPF, is a measure of the amount of UVB protection. The higher the number, the greater the protection. In the UK, UVA protection is measured with a star rating. Sunscreen ratings range from 0 to 5 stars. The higher the number of stars, the greater the protection.

30 HBCM05 Magazine A/W.indd 30-31

Please mention

Don’t spend any longer in the sun than you would without sunscreen. In the UK, the sun is at its strongest from March to October, especially from 11am to 3pm. Try to spend time in the shade between these times. You can still burn in cloudy conditions, even if it is not warm.

Should I reapply sunscreen if I swim?

F

Water washes off sunscreen, and the cooling effect of the water can make you think you’re not getting burned. Water also reflects UV rays, increasing your exposure. Sunscreen should be reapplied straight after you’ve been in water (even if it is “waterresistant”) and after towel drying, sweating or when it may have rubbed off.

What clothing should I wear?

Wear clothes that provide sun protection, such as: • a wide-brimmed hat that shades the face, neck and ears • a long-sleeved top • trousers or long skirts in close-weave fabrics that do not allow sunlight through • sunglasses with wraparound lenses or wide arms with the CE Mark and European Standard EN 1836:2005 What should I do if I get sunburn?

Painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, will ease the pain by helping to reduce inflammation caused by sunburn. Sponge sore skin with cool water, then apply soothing after sun or calamine lotion. If you feel unwell or the skin swells badly or Magazine when responding to advertisements

blisters, seek medical help. Stay out of the sun until all signs of redness have gone. Are children more at risk of sunburn?

Yes. Take extra care to protect babies and children. Their skin is much more sensitive than adult skin, and repeated exposure to sunlight could lead to skin cancer developing in later life. Children aged under six months should be kept out of direct strong sunlight.

?

From March to October in the UK, children should:

• spend time in the shade (particularly from 11am to 3pm) • wear at least SPF15 sunscreen Apply sunscreen to areas not protected by clothing, such as the face, ears, feet and backs of hands. Consider sunscreens that are formulated for children and babies’ skin, as these are less likely to irritate their skin. My child has eczema. What sunscreen should I use?

Some sunscreens may aggravate eczema. Check the label for any ingredients that you know your child is allergic to. Test any new sunscreen on a small area before applying it to the whole body. Put on your child’s emollient and steroids first, then put the sunscreen on 30 minutes later. Remember to put more sunscreen on regularly throughout the day and especially after swimming. What are the symptoms of heat exhaustion?

Heat exhaustion occurs when the body cannot lose heat fast enough. If it’s not treated quickly, Please mention

it can lead to heat stroke, which is a much more dangerous condition. Signs of heat exhaustion include faintness, dizziness, palpitations, nausea, headaches, low blood pressure, tiredness, confusion, loss of appetite and hallucinations. What should I do if someone has signs of heat exhaustion?

Get them to rest in a cool place – ideally a room with air conditioning. Give them plenty of water. Avoid alcohol or caffeine, as this can increase dehydration. Cool their skin with cold water. Use a shower or cold bath to cool them down or, if this is not possible, wet flannels and face cloths in water and apply to their skin. Loosen any unnecessary clothing and make sure that the person gets plenty of ventilation. Monitor their condition closely. Should I cover up my mole when I’m in the sun?

If you have lots of moles or freckles, you’re risk of getting skin cancer is higher than average, so take extra care. Avoid getting caught out by sunburn. Use shade, clothing and sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 to protect yourself. Keep an eye out for changes to your skin. Changes to check for include: • a new mole, growth or lump • any moles, freckles or patches of skin that change in size, shape or colour Report these to your doctor as soon as possible. Skin cancer is much easier to treat if it is found early.

Homeowners in the UK are the most active renovators across Europe Global report proves home improvements are popular in the UK with three quarters of homeowners undergoing renovations

Three quarters of UK homeowners1 renovated their homes in 2014 and/or were planning projects in 2015, proving more active than other European countries, including France, Italy and Germany,2 according to the inaugural Houzz & Home survey for the UK market from Houzz, the world’s leading platform for home renovation and design. The survey, which had more than 9,500 respondents in the UK and more than 260,000 respondents globally, revealed that nearly half of homeowners on Houzz. co.uk who renovated in 2014 embarked on a project to customise a recently purchased home, and more than one-third renovated because they finally had the financial means. The survey also highlighted that Brits are the most active decorators globally; 87% decorated their homes last year and/or are planning projects this year.3 Discretionary, or non-essential, projects are driving the majority of improvement projects in UK homes, with a quarter (24%) of decorating homeowners, and 14% of renovating homeowners updating all interior spaces. Living rooms and kitchens are the most popular interior renovation projects, with over a quarter of renovating homeowners in the UK tackling these rooms in 2014 (29 and 27 percent, respectively). The most popular home system upgrade was heating (45%), with cooling being the least prioritised (1%). While living rooms are the most popular space to improve, kitchens command the greatest spend. Homeowners spent an average of £18,300 on major renovations of kitchens over 150 square feet4, and £9,400 for major renovations of kitchens less than

150 square feet. Furthermore, over one in ten renovating homeowners invested in a kitchen extension (12%). Brits were twice as likely to build an addition to their homes as those living in the US (23 percent versus 11 percent).

“In the UK, renovating homeowners on Houzz are actively investing in their homes in a variety of ways,” said Nino Sitchinava, principal economist at Houzz. “The top goals of their renovations are to address their own design and functional needs, over and above any financial considerations, such as increasing the resale value or minimising renovation costs. The prevalence of nonessential projects such as kitchen and living room renovations is a direct outcome of these

priorities. It is not surprising then that many homeowners who have been in their home for a while delay renovations until they have the financial means or time to do them.” When it comes to realising their home improvements, UK homeowners prefer to hire professionals; 90% of Houzz respondents hired a professional for their renovation project in 2014. Reviews or recommendations are the most important factor when choosing a service provider (86%) followed by experience with projects of similar scope (48%) and good communication/organisation skills (46%). Homeowners admitted that finding the right service providers was the toughest challenge in their home improvement projects (42%).

Other key findings among UK homeowners on Houzz who renovated in 2014 • Smart Technology: 19% of homeowners rate smart home technology as a very-toextremely important, however, 33% rate it as not important at all. Nevertheless, a quarter installed home automation systems as part of a renovation in 2014.

• Financing: While the majority of UK homeowners save or use personal finances to pay for home improvements (93%), over one in ten (13%) charge expenses to a credit card. Almost a third (32%) admitted it was a challenge to stay on budget.

• Green Homes: Homeowners in the UK are more divided on the importance of integrating green and sustainable materials into their homes than those in other countries. While a quarter rate this consideration as veryto-extremely important in recent renovations, a fifth rate it as entirely unimportant (compared to Germany, where 47% rate it as very-to-extremely important, and 15% rate it as entirely unimportant).

• Safe House: 11% of UK homeowners are choosing to update security measures, such as cameras, sensors and intercoms. • Outdoor Living: Renovating homeowners focus on indoor renovations to a similar extent across all regions. In contrast, the focus on outdoor renovations varies widely by region. Homeowners in Wales are most active (66%), while those in Greater London are the least active (45%).

Read the report here: http://info.houzz.com/rs/804-JLJ-529/images/Houzz%26Home%20-%20UK%20.pdf The Houzz & Home Survey was sent to registered users of Houzz and fielded in February-April 2015. The content of the survey was adapted for the UK market. The Farnsworth Group, an independent market research firm, conducted the survey. The data within this release relies on responses of UK homeowners on Houzz (n=8,000).
