Command of the Oceans Launch of £9m ‘Command of the Oceans’ project reveals hidden treasures and captures 400 years of Britain’s naval history HMS Namur, a famous 18th century British warship whose battle honours surpass those of HMS Victory, Nelson’s flagship at Trafalgar, went on display for the first time in 260 years on 27 May 2016 as the centre piece of the new Command of the Oceans galleries at The Historic Dockyard Chatham. Her extraordinary 47-year service encompassed three major wars including the Seven Years’ War, Napoleonic Wars and nine fleet actions. She was one of the principal ships to fight in all key battles of the golden period of the Age of Sail. Dan Snow, TV Historian says, ‘The Namur is the ship that defines this course of British history.’ She was the first warship to have a ‘round bow’, a design pioneered at Chatham in response to Nelson’s tactic of ‘cutting the line’ (utilised to great effect at the Battle of Trafalgar). The round bow transformed British warships’ ability to withstand ferocious assault as they approached the enemy line of battle – thereby saving the lives of many British seamen. The Namur featured across 18th and 19th century history and literature – Jane Austen’s brother was her Captain. His nautical experiences informed the naval characters in Mansfield Park and Persuasion. Olaudah Equiano, one of the age’s leading and most celebrated anti-slavery campaigners was a ‘Powder Monkey’ on the Namur, (the name of the crew member who carried gunpowder to guns during battle – one of the most dangerous jobs on the ship). He wrote one of the only contemporaneous accounts of life below the waterline. 8

Please mention

The Namur’s remains go on display with personal items and objects from the Invincible, an 18th century French warship captured by the Royal Navy in 1747, whose collection also goes on show for the first time. Together, they form the centrepiece for the new ‘Command of the Oceans’ galleries at The Historic Dockyard Chatham. ‘Command of The Oceans’ captures 400 years of history and will act as the starting point for telling the unique role of The Historic Dockyard Chatham in creating ships for the Royal Navy.

About Command of the Oceans State-of-the-art interactive displays tell a previously untold chapter of British naval history, showcasing the Dockyard’s importance from its creation, almost 400 years ago, through to modern times. Building on the existing ‘Hearts of Oak’ gallery, a digital reconstruction of Chatham Dockyard as it was in 1806 during the height of the Napoleonic Wars, ‘Command of the Oceans’ will provide new documentation of life on board and during the historic ‘Age of Sail’. This includes the famous 18th century warship HMS Namur (1756) and the fine collection of 18th century maritime objects discovered on the 18th century French warship Invincible. ‘People, Tools & Trades’, another new addition to the permanent display, will present stories of the people employed at Chatham throughout the centuries, and bring to life a variety of trades practices at the Dockyard, which visitors will be able to try for themselves. BBQ Glazed Ribs COOKING This is barbecue cooking at its sticky-fingered best – though the dish will also work in the oven if weather doesn’t permit. You can either barbecue a whole rack of ribs or subdivide the hick into smaller portions, but don’t go smaller than three ribs joined together or they’ll get over-frazzled. Another thing you can use is an old-fashioned butcher’s cut called a sticking of pork – a piece trimmed off the hand of the pork to leave a tidier joint. The sticking has some ribs attached to some deliciously fatty meat from the shoulder.

ingredients 1–2 racks of ribs or sticking of pork (allow about 4 ribs per person, assuming other meats are being served) For the marinade 2–3 large garlic cloves, peeled 1 level tsp salt 1 tbsp English mustard 2 tbsp soft brown sugar 2 tbsp tomato ketchup 1 tbsp dark soy sauce Plenty of freshly ground black pepper (about 2 tsp) 2–3 tbsp vinegar (brown rice vinegar is good)

10

Please mention

method On a chopping board, crush the garlic and salt together with a fork to make a paste and then scrape it into a bowl. Add all the other ingredients for the marinade, the vinegar last of all, a little at a time. Mix well, adding just enough vinegar to make a thick emulsion that will coat the ribs well. Spread the marinade over the ribs so that they are well coated on all sides and leave them in a shallow dish for at least 1 hour, preferably 4 or 5. Feel free to turn and recoat them once or twice during this time. When the barbecue is up to speed (i.e. moderately hot), place the ribs over the coals without wiping off the marinade. Turn frequently to avoid over-blackening, painting and dabbing them with extra marinade as you go. A certain amount of blackening is acceptable, indeed desirable in the end, but don’t let it happen too soon. The ribs should take 10-12 minutes, a sticking 15 minutes or more. Serve.

City of Rochester Society The Society was founded in 1967 and is the civic society for the historic city of Rochester, which includes Strood. It is affiliated to the Kent Federation of Amenity Societies and is a member of Civic Voice, the national movement for civic societies. It is represented on a number of consultative and advisory bodies, such as the Medway Tourism Association. The Society has a wide range of interests and activities including examining development proposals for the city and offering comments on them to Medway Council; publishing books and pamphlets about the city; disseminating information about forthcoming events in and around Rochester; conducting walking tours of the historic city centre and surrounding areas; holding regular meetings for members, with guest speakers; running the craft fairs in the castle gardens during the Dickens Festivals The Society has, among its long-term aims, the establishment of a parish (or ‘town’) council for the old city area, and the restoration of Rochester’s ‘lost’ city status. More information about the Society, and how you can join, can be found on our website at www.city-or-rochester.org.uk The Society’s meetings (each month apart from July and August) are usually held in the hall alongside Rochester Baptist Church in Crow Lane. Non-members are welcome. A small admission charge is made to defray the expenses of the meetings.

Gillingham Male Voice Choir Gillingham Male Voice Choir began in 1988 when a small group of men who enjoyed singing decided to try to form a choir. Initially consisting of 9 members who rehearsed in a garage, choir numbers quickly grew and they also started to rehearse in more conventional surroundings. The choir now comprises around 20 members and rehearses at Gillingham Golf Club on a Wednesday night starting at 8.00pm until 10.00pm. New members are always welcome and they can either join in with the choir straight away or sit at the back and listen and observe if they wish. We also welcome people who just want to come along and see what the choir does and how it does it but don’t necessarily want to sing, may be preferring to sit, listen to the music and socialise. The general atmosphere at rehearsals is friendly and good humoured with a fair amount of banter between the choir sections and also between individuals. This results in a lively and enjoyable rehearsal experience as well as being effective in helping members to learn the new pieces and add polish the old ones. Members of the choir come from all walks of life, various ages and all sorts of jobs, (steel workers to solicitors and a few retired people). There are four different sections in the choir top tenors, second tenors, baritones and basses.

The choir repertoire is quite broad, it sings all kinds of music ranging from West End show songs, film musicals, pop songs, opera, and religious pieces through to traditional male voice choir music. The choir gives a range of performances through the year, and takes part in some competitions, such as the Medway Music Festival which we won in 2015. We also perform alongside other choirs at joint concerts, we hosted the brilliant and entertaining Barnsole Road Junior School Choir at our last Christmas Concert. Most of our performances are used to raise money for various charities and every three years we support “The Festival of Brass and Voices” at the Royal Albert Hall which raises money for Cancer Research. The massed choirs at the event number in the region of 1200 to 1400 voices, and singing at the Royal Albert Hall is something of a unique experience for members of the choir, no one who does it ever forgets it. So don’t be concerned about how you sing, if you enjoy it, just do it. Why not do yourself a favour and come along to one of our rehearsals and listen? You never know you might enjoy it and levering yourself out of your armchair on a Wednesday night might be the best move that you’ve made in a long time. Medway Families Need YOU! Volunteer for Home-Start Medway Home-Start Medway needs home-visiting volunteers who have parenting experience of children under the age of five. Come along to our volunteer information session 10.00am-12.30pm, Wednesday 8th June 2016 at 46 Green Street, Gillingham ME7 1XA. Volunteers visit families once a week for 3-4 hours. The families will have at least one child under the age of five. Volunteers offer emotional and practical support to parents/carers who may be struggling with a disability, bereavement, multiple birth etc. Volunteers attend a free preparation course within school hours – in June we will be running our 76th course!!

that he could no longer do his job effectively. On the advice of his doctor, he had to refuse to do certain aspects of his job. This caused a lot of friction at work, both with his fellow colleagues and superiors and resulted in dad being bullied. This caused dad to get very depressed and withdrawn. Mum was very worried about his mental and physical health. I listened to mum every week, she shared her worries. This really helped mum as she didn’t have to burden dad with more problems.

Since 1987, Home-Start Medway has provided a unique service to local families who have at least one child aged under five. Local parents are recruited and trained to become volunteers, who then home-visit to offer emotional and practical support. Home visiting is what makes the service unique. Support needs range from isolation and bereavement to multiple birth and disability. Volunteers are often a lifeline in helping families overcome difficulties.

In addition, one of the children was diagnosed with a developmental delay. I have helped them get to speech and language, health visitor, dental appointments, baby bounce, sure start centres and swimming lessons. I have also helped mum reach the shops, which can be tricky with small children and no transport. We also attended appointments to a child psychologist. I have played with the baby to give mum some time to herself. Mum has also passed her driving test and an essential work course.

A Volunteers Experience: Initial reason for support was helping with multiple children under 5 and an additional pair of hands. Dad had sustained an injury at work, it became clear

To register your interest, or If you would like to learn more about Home-Start Medway, please telephone the office on 01634 570 717 or email info@home-startmedway.org.uk
