Parish Council

In Council Parish Council meetings take place every third Wednesday at 7.30pm in Broomfield Village Hall - members of the public are welcome to attend and there is a 10 minute Public Question Time at the start of the meeting for any questions to be put forward to the Parish Council for consideration. At the time of writing two meetings have taken place since the last edition of the Broomfield Times and a summary of the main topics discussed can be found below.

Councillors

Traffic and road safety

The Parish Council have had an Uncontested Election with nine existing Councillors reelected and one new Councillor. Councillors Steed, Wrenn, Cockram and Mullender have not sought re-election and David Howell will be joining the Council. A big vote of thanks are due to all those retiring but particularly to Councillors Steed and Wrenn have served on the council for 39 and 28 years respectively.

Two surveys have been carried out by the Local Highways Panel on the zebra crossing at Erick Avenue to see if it is suitable to upgrade to a Pelican crossing. The first survey found that it would impede traffic flow. The results of the second survey, a safety assessment have not yet been received. Requests to widen the footpath near Gutters Lane, remove the road hatching along that stretch of Main Road and extend the 30 mph speed limit up to Hospital Approach have been received. The siting of village gateways, to help reduce the speed of traffic are still being discussed. The impact of the new primary school on traffic will also need careful consideration.

The Annual Parish Meeting was a huge success and is the subject of a separate report on page 7. Village Hall and Civic Amenities The Bingo evening and Table Top sale were a great success raising funds of over ÂŁ1000 to help maintain the Village Hall. The next event is the Village Games & Fun Day on 19th July where volunteers will be required to help. This will also form part of the Inter Community Games Active Essex. The Civic Amenities are keen to tackle the problem of litter around the village. All residents can play a part and volunteers to pick up litter would be particularly welcome. Play Schemes for 2015 Two sessions of Play in the Park were held during the Easter holiday and were very popular with 215 children attending over both days. Four sessions will be held during the Summer holidays - see the Village Hall section for details.

Discussions are on-going with Essex County Council regarding the proposed cycle path. The Planning Committee have concerns regarding lighting, the proposed surface and the detrimental impact on the rural scene and are liaising with ECC Senior Transport Strategy & Engagement Officer. Communications The Communications Committee have been considering widening their use of social media to encourage two way communication between residents and the Parish Council. The potential benefits of a Youth Council are also being considered. The new website is now live and can be found at www.broomfieldessex.org - the site has details of all council meetings, village hall activities and more. Our Village, Our Future Annual Parish Meeting 22nd April 2015 The Parish Council would like to thank all the residents including Broomfield Cubs who attended our informal consultation on 22nd April. Parishioners were invited to comment on Broomfield’s present facilities – play areas and open spaces - and were asked for suggestions as to how they could be improved. They were also asked what additional facilities they would like to see provided in the Village for all age groups – many suggestions were received!

There were live displays of our new website www.broomfieldessex.org and facebook page; Police and volunteers from Community Speed Watch attended to answer questions and seek volunteers; Planning issues were discussed; regular and future events held in Broomfield Village Hall were advertised and old photographs of Broomfield and our finance report were displayed. The afternoon and evening session saw around 200 parishioners attend – a great success!

County Council

From the County Council Hadleigh Park Opened to the Public Since London 2012, Essex County Council, along with Active Essex, have been developing Hadleigh Park into a world class sporting venue with its Olympic mountain bike courses at its heart. This great sporting legacy opened on 29th April and now incorporates with the bike trails, a 400 space car park, a café, bike shop and an outdoor children’s play area. A must for the burgeoning numbers of off road cyclists of all standards. Whilst on the subject of cycling, beginners and advanced riders may wish to take advantage of free “Bikeability” tuition, which is being facilitated by Braintree District Council and Essex County Council at Great Notley Country Park every Saturday morning, starting at 9.30am. These “Bikeability” sessions are government approved and overseen by the Department for Transport and are open to all especially those who may have rediscovered their enthusiasm for cycling.

Essex “Gritters” Stand Down

Be Aware of Deer

Summer officially began on Sunday 5th April, and this is when winter gritting crews stood down to take a well-earned break. During the last six months the crews carried out 85 separate countywide salting operations, spreading some 18,000 tonnes over the 2,000 miles of Essex’s priority roads.

With spring well underway, motorists should be wary of one of the season’s least known driving hazards – Deer! About 40,000 deer collisions occur every year in the UK, causing some 350 human injuries. So when driving take note of deer warning signs and drive with extra caution on country roads where deer collisions are more likely to happen. After dark, use full-beam and dim them on sight of a deer but don’t overswerve to avoid hitting a deer. Report all deer collisions to the police.

Although it was not the snowiest winter, the crews were out every night due to some particularly cold temperatures. The gritting crews begin again next winter on 27th October.

Charities Foundation Mid Essex Hospital Services Hello my name is Lisa Slevin, and I have recently started working as a Fundraising Events Co-Ordinator for the hospital’s Charities Foundation. Firstly, I’d like to tell you a little bit about me. I was born and bred in School Lane, Broomfield, attending Broomfield Primary and Chelmer Valley High. As one of four girls, I had a very happy childhood living with my sisters and parents. My main objective for the charity to raise awareness and much needed funds for the hospital, and I am looking for your help. There are simply so many ways you can get involved from holding a cake sale, quiz night or for the brave hearted, why not try a sky dive. With your help and donations, the charity is able to support so many different fantastic projects that make an important difference to hospital life. We want to make every area of our hospital the best it can be for our patients and visitors. Here are just a few examples of how fundraising has helped us to do that: The Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) fund is celebrating an entire decade of supporting women undergoing breast reconstruction by funding support groups and buying top of the range medical equipment. The Intensive Care Unit medical team raised funds to improve patient facilities and purchase new specialist rehabilitation equipment by completing the Three Peaks Challenge and amongst other events arranged a Bed Push through Chelmsford High Street.

TO ADVERTISE please call Mary on 01843 295371 f find us on Facebook

Donations have funded a new Woodland Path where patients, visitors and staff can relax and enjoy a tranquil environment away from the busy setting of the hospital. We have also funded a beautiful Dementia Garden. There are many national events where fundraisers are supporting us too. There’s the Prudential Ride London, the Super Hero Event and let’s not forget the London Marathon, where eight runners took part raising much needed funds for the hospital. Just this last week, a volunteer arranged a cake sale for the Cancer Care Unit raising over £400. The cakes were all sold out within 3 hours!!!! If you have any fundraising ideas or want to take part in one of our charity challenges, simply call me on 01245 514860 or by email to lisa.slevin@meht.nhs.uk. You can also subscribe to our newsletter mailing list and visit our website at www.meht.nhs.uk/our-charity

Falcon Bowls Club win National Championship Some Broomfield residents might not be aware that the Parish extends beyond the River Chelmer and Essex Regiment Way to an area that embraces Belstead Hall Farm and The Falcon, one of the best bowling clubs in England. In late March the ladies of the indoor bowling section achieved high honours when they won the Vivienne Trophy, a national bowls tournament with almost 100 clubs taking part. The final took place at the Nottingham Indoor Bowls Club and was played against the Dolphin Indoor Bowls Club from Poole, Dorset.

it was able to expand the range of facilities available to its members and visitors. In addition to the bowling, members are able to enjoy refreshments in the Club restaurant and bar, access to equipment via the Club shop, plenty of parking and disabled accessibility to all areas. New members are always very welcome at the Club whether you are an absolute beginner seeking tuition or an experienced bowler. If you think that bowls might be for you, simply contact the Club Office on 01245 443 666. John Milsom

www.falconbowlingclub.co.uk

The final, played with four teams of four ladies, was very close with the teams ending with 82 shots each after almost 4 hours play. The tie was resolved by one of the Falcon teams playing an extra end (the bowls equivalent of a penalty shootout!). Falcon won the end to the great delight of players and the many travelling supporters. The Falcon Bowling and Social Club has facilities for indoor and outdoor bowling in its purpose-designed premises in Channels Drive. Founded in 1908, the club moved to its current Broomfield location in 2002 where

Broomfield Football Club As the season draws to a close our attention turns towards our fun day weekend. We ask interested teams to get their entry forms in early. These can be accessed from Broomfield FC website or contact Dan Dunbar 07788 268327 or myself on 07885116073. As the club continues to grow with additional teams for next season we are seeking potential sponsors for new kits. This is a very cost effective way to promote your organisation. Broomfield FC are also seeking help with the loan of a minibus for use at the weekends. Football Reports Senior

Junior teams

Saturday Olympian team have completed their fixtures. After a very good start winning Broomfield fun day and the FA tournament the season was a story of score draws, 8 in total. We are looking forward to next season.

Broomfield FC are particularly excited when success comes from our youth teams as this shows we are making progress. Many of our junior teams still have games to play but at the time of writing this is how they stand:

Pope and Smith’s Sunday 1st have had a good cup run in both cups and look like finishing a very creditable 4th in the Premier League.

• U12 Fire reached the Knock Out Cup final (26/4/15) where they will play Dunmow Rhodes Tigers

Pope and Smith’s Sunday Reserves have struggled with league form in the early part of the season but were more successful in the cup competition. The second half of the season saw a change in form and they remain safe in division 3.

• U12 Blaze have reached League Cup final (3/5/15) where they will play Tiptree Jobserve

Sunday A, our new senior team started their first season in men’s football with a loss in their first game. They have since progressed very well finishing 6th in the league and reaching the cup final on May 10th.

• U13 Tornadoes lost in the League Cup semi final • U13 Thunder lost in the League Cup semi final • U13 Storm lost in the League Cup semi final • U15 lost in the League Cup semi final In the league, both U12 Blaze and U15 could achieve promotion to Division 1 as they are currently lying 3rd and 2nd respectively. This year again, planning has been centre stage with the continuing fulfilment of the North Chelmsford Area Action Plan. New homes are being completed on the Saxon Gate development and we welcome the new residents to the Parish of Broomfield. We hope that the artwork that will enhance the development gives an insight into the long history of the village. Protecting our historic elements has caused concerns to the Parish Council and we have tried to make our higher authorities aware of how easily they could be wiped away in the frenzy of new development. I would particularly like to thank the chairman of our Planning Committee, Cllr. John Blake for his great expertise in presenting the parish view to the decision making bodies. They are not allowed to ignore the aspirations of the village as documented in our Parish Plan and Village Design Statement. The Village Hall has been much admired and used by many local groups, both longstanding and new – a full programme of events for all

Bulb planting at Scots Green ages takes place and the venue is also available for hire for parties and other celebrations. The Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) with its high quality surface has been marked out for many games and tennis nets are available for those inspired by Wimbledon. For those who like to take individual exercise, the newly installed fitness equipment is a popular facility for younger and older residents alike. Cllr Trevor Jones and his team must be congratulated on their enthusiastic pursuit of this enterprise. Our thanks must go to the team who keep our village looking good. The bulbs planted last year came again in abundance in the spring to lift spirits out of the winter gloom. Our many footpaths are well monitored and maintained thanks to the leadership of Cllr Tim Tranquada. Centenary Wood has become the destination

Annual Report

Chairman’s Report for “Wellie Walks” from the school and nursery schools, through which we hope the youngsters will develop an appreciation of the rural scene. It certainly looked beautiful in the autumn with leaves and berries of many colours including the intense red of the Guelder Rose. I also need to mention Stuart Jones our Village Attendant who is known to many in the Village and does a wonderful job not only picking up discarded litter but he also maintains our bus shelters, waste bins, play area equipment, seats and does many other little jobs which crop up from time to time – he often goes beyond the call of duty and is an invaluable member of staff. The “new look” Broomfield Times was launched this year. Giving the publication over to a business that covers the cost of production from advertising was an offer the Parish Council could not refuse. We hope we have not lost the appeal of our local newsletter with its reduced size format and that you find it as useful and informative as before. We know there were some hitches with its delivery to some houses, which we sincerely hope will be rectified for the next issue. Please let us know if difficulties continue to be experienced. The Parish Council has now set up a Communications Committee to manage Broomfield Times, our new website, the Facebook page and other possible means of communication that might be appropriate. Our sincere thanks must go to Selina Matthews who continues with her hard work producing each edition on a voluntary basis. Funds released from the new Broomfield Times arrangement meant that we could invest in an extensive consultation with residents about future facilities to be provided in the village. The major launch was at the Annual Parish Meeting in April and we were very pleased at how well this event was supported. Suggestions ranged from providing seats and picnic benches to a skate park or BMX track, and swings for grown-ups. There is still time to contribute f find us on Facebook

to the consultation as funds for much of the implementation will not be available until further planned developments take place in the village. We have welcomed two new councillors during the year and they, together with those who joined us last year, are getting used to the frustrations of how local government works. Nothing is instant, I’m afraid, but asking the right department in the right higher authority at the right time does eventually lead to your aspirations, as voiced to us in past consultations, becoming closer to being realised. It is ten years since the publication of our Parish Plan and in reviewing the Action Plan contained therein, it can be seen that much has been achieved and, although some items remain outstanding, these are being actively pursued. In this year of your Parish Council being re-elected, I must mention those councillors who have not sought re-election and are thus effectively retiring from Broomfield Parish Council. We are losing two very longstanding members and we will, I’m sure, miss their valued experience. Les Steed has served for 39 years under five chairmen and three clerks. He must have seen so many changes to both how the Council operates and to the village as a whole. In that time much housing has been built and the population has increased considerably as a consequence. Les has seen controversies come and go, problems arise and solutions found. We will miss his most valued support and his intimate knowledge of how the Council works. Jean Wrenn has served for 28 years and I’m sure she has seen many controversies too. In my time she has always endeavoured to keep the Council on its toes and respond appropriately in the interests of residents. Gerry Cockram has served for one term and during that time he has overseen all financial aspects of the Parish Council’s work, which is a great deal as it has to account for the spending of public money in a most meticulous way. His expertise as an www.broomfieldessex.org

Chairman’s Report accountant has greatly helped and supported the Parish Clerk especially in a time of change and extra rules to ensure that all that we do is “squeaky clean”. Ray Mullender has been with us just a short while, but we have benefited from his knowledge of how to run some of our social events and the Parish Office is graced by his original watercolour paintings of village scenes. He says he will remain on hand to offer his help wherever we may need it. I must thank all those who have supported the work of the Parish Council over the past year, especially my Vice Chairman, Geof Garwood with whom I have shared many tasks in representing the community, and the other Councillors who have each taken on a role within the life of the village. I must also

especially thank the Parish Office staff – Karen Hurrell our Parish Clerk who has guided our work and put so many of our aspirations into effect; Wendy Martin, the Deputy Clerk who always presents a cheerful face, knows everyone and supports the Clerk and committees and Kathryn Cameron, the Village Hall Secretary, who not only sees to the smooth running of the village hall and associated facilities, but also organises village wide events with great skill and enthusiasm so that we can all come together as a community. Lastly, I must thank you, the residents, for taking such an interest in the affairs of your village through the Parish Council. We look forward to your continued support and involvement in the months and years to come.

Village Hall Report Councillor Trevor Jones Following all the momentous change that we have outlined in our previous annual reports, this year has been one of solid achievement rather than spectacular change. But nevertheless we have continued to move forward with our long term goals of establishing Broomfield Village Hall as the centre that all our residents can embrace and enjoy for themselves and their families. We have further extended our facilities with the establishment of a full range of outdoor exercise equipment. This has proved hugely popular, and we are delighted to see all age groups participating from Grandad’s and Nanny’s to the very young. We completed the installation of our outdoor storage facility to support the events in our MUGA. A continuing theme for us is the necessity to sustain our viability as an organisation and our fundraising events have continued to be very popular enjoyed by all of those who attend and playing a crucial role in our financial wellbeing. They have enabled us to replace vital equipment, the most recent of which, at the time of writing, is the installation of new noticeboards at the beginning of Angel Lane. These will promote events at the Village Hall and inform our residents about what is happening within the Parish Council. Our regular activities are Stay N Play for

families every Monday morning enabling people to relax and see their children enjoying themselves in the warmth and comfort of the Village Hall whilst chatting over coffee and toast. On the first Wednesday of every month we host a coffee mornings where people of all ages can come and relax and talk to us about all things Broomfield. For the first time we promoted our own New Year’s Eve party for families of all ages which was most successful. We intend to repeat this event this coming year. We have held Bingo nights, our regular family disco, the next being Saturday 13th June, and our band night. One event not to be forgotten is our first Broomfield Village Hall Fete which was held last September. This year it is to be followed by our Village Games and Fun day on Sunday 19th July. Mark it in your diary and be ready to enjoy yourself. We are actively working on plans for the future. A Village wide consultation is currently taking place so be assured we will not rest on our laurels. Our 300+ Facebook followers keep us on our toes ensuring we stay in tune with what our Villagers really want. In conclusion, I have to thank all those who have helped make the village hall so successful over the last year - my Committee, the Parish Council and in particular our Secretary Kathryn Cameron, our caretaker Fitz Grant and ‘our entertainments officer!’ Tab Porter.

Finance & General Purposes Committee Report Councillor Gerry Cockram This has been a successful year for your Council with income exceeding expenses by £67,792. Our main income source, the precept was £103,025 and, after localized council tax support paid to your council we received £108,650. We received £73,964 community support from Persimmon relating to the development at Saxon Way which has been transferred to reserves to provide funding for the repayment of the Public Works loan, the newly formed History and Heritage Committee and general village maintenance.

The Public Works loan for £220,000, entered into in 2014, is being repaid by annual instalments of £33,456 and the balance outstanding at year end was £175,014. We have increased our reserves from £164,779 last year to £232,651 this year-end. We are in a strong financial position to consider further projects to improve our village and the committee always welcomes ideas from local parishioners as to how we can invest our funds for the benefit of the local community. Further Community support will be paid to the council when the Hospital Approach development by Countryside gets under way. During the year the Council has made donations of £2,717. A summary of the unaudited accounts for the year ended March 31 2015 is shown on the charts and a copy of the audited accounts will be available from the Parish Office once the audit has been completed. If you have any questions about the accounts please direct these to the Clerk at the Parish Office who will provide any further information you may request.

Civic Amenities Committee Report Councillor Tim Tranquada Village Greens The annual 5 Greens walk took place on Sunday 20th July 2014; the leisurely walk visits each of the 5 Greens in the Parish. Scots Green received a small flower bed makeover from Angela Thomson, Andrew Lilley, Margaret and Tim Tranquada. The annual clearing of the ditches by parsonage Green took place in November and the Parish Council continues to put pressure on the County to sort out the drainage problems in the area.

5 Greens walk

The show of snowdrops on Parsonage Green heralded the start of spring and we then had a really good show of crocuses on Angel Green and Church Green; in addition the cheery daffodils on Parsonage Green lit up that section of the Village. Village Play Area & Playing Field The new metal fence has been placed around the play-area and Stuart, our village attendant, has started a programme to give each of the pieces of play equipment a new coat of paint.

Clearing Parsonage Green ditches

The new roundabout for the play area should be installed in May 2015. Outdoor exercise equipment The outdoor exercise equipment was delivered on Friday 19th September, just in time for the village fete. The equipment is well used and the choice of ‘twin’ pieces of apparatus has proved to be a hit as it encourages pairs to have fun exercising together. New metal fence around the play-area

Centenary Wood Roger Cole has given us a detailed ‘condition survey’ map of the trees in Centenary Wood which will help us greatly in the management of the wood. The shrubs continue to give early spring and wonderful autumn colours. The stream has a good show of bulbs and primroses and the wild flower beds are becoming established. Two additional wooden trunk benches will be installed in late spring. Parish Pathways Partnership (P3)

We placed road scalpings on the very muddy pinch point on the footpath at the lower end of Angel Meadow. The village volunteers deserve a heartfelt thank you for all of the hard work they put into maintaining and improving the village environment. Allotments All the water pipes have new combination locks fitted. The site is generally well maintained and where tenants have had problems they have, in the first instance, been offered help to overcome these. This can help them to ‘turn their plot around’ and then maintain it to produce a range of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Volunteers spread scalpings on muddy footpath

Litter Pick This year’s litter pick was carried out with a merry band of volunteers from Chelmer Valley High School. We also helped to clear the ditch by the School’s entrance. The Parish Councillors who helped, mainly from within the ditches, were: Tim Tranquada; Geof Garwood; Les Steed and Peter Carter. A new litter bin has been installed nearby to help prevent further littering. www.broomfieldessex.org

Annual Report

Planning and Property Committee Report Councillor John Blake The ‘big issue’ over the last year has been the proposed development north of Morrisons, where the western end of Hollow Lane joins Chignal Road. The land belongs to two different developers. We’ve worked closely with Chignal Parish Council and Newlands Spring Residents Association to try to ensure the developers work together and access both developments from the same junction with Chignal Road. After a lot of activity, including two appeals to the Chelmsford Planning Committee, we are cautiously optimistic this will be the eventual outcome. We have also lobbied the County and City Councils to stop Hollow Lane becoming a ratrun for these new developments. Since talking it through with the Hollow Lane residents last year, we’ve pushed for Hollow Lane to be closed to most through traffic at the western end, so that it can become an attractive cycling and walking route. It’s early days, but again we’re cautiously optimistic, though it will depend on a legal consultation at some point within the next two years. This is the state of play on the other significant developments planned in Broomfield: • Area between Patching Hall Lane and Berwick Avenue: most of the 135 houses are now built and occupied • North of Hospital Approach: Countryside have had planning permission for over a year

now, but there is no sign of activity. The smaller development on the south side of Hospital Approach is different and seems to be nearing completion • Area around Broomfield Place: there’s no sign of the proposed Persimmon housing development, but discussions about a new primary school are continuing. Other planning issues over the last year have included: • Flooding in the Hearsall Avenue and Gutters Lane areas • Parking in the roads off Court Road • Possibility of some Hospital traffic using the Park and Ride at Little Waltham • Responding to Chelmsford City consultations about land for future development, both for housing and employment • Cycle paths, traffic problems and village gateways • The ongoing, month by month business of planning applications - the Parish Council is consulted on all such applications in and bordering the Parish. Space doesn’t allow more detail here, but please feel free to contact us at the Parish Office if you would like to know more about any of the topics outlined in this report.

Latest from ECM Essex Community Messaging (ECM) has been launched, to give residents in Essex a chance to receive up to date information on crime incidents and crime prevention advice via email, text or voice message. This information comes directly from Essex Police officers, Essex Watch liaison officers and other partners, including Neighbourhood Watch. Free of charge and specifically designed for Essex, the messaging system is jointly funded by the Police and Crime Commissioner, and money seized from criminals under the Proceeds of Crime Act. ECM gives you the option to select the information that you want to receive, including issues that you might have a particular interest in. This is used to make you aware of crime trends where you live, to give advice on issues happening in your area, and to encourage you and your neighbours to report suspicious activity to us.

You can find out more about ECM by visiting www.essex.police.uk/ecm.

Chelmer Valley High School Students Vote in Mock Election On Thursday 7th May, students at Chelmer Valley High School held their first ever mock election to introduce the voting process to students. Both students and staff were asked to vote for one of the five main parties during the day. The turnout was good with 45% of students and 30% of staff taking time out of their day to vote. Part of the preparation included reading the manifestos, taking online quizzes and preparing a debate, which took place on Wednesday 6th May during lunchtime. Students have really enjoyed researching the parties that they most identified with and made some well informed decisions when voting. Posters in support of parties were made before the election and placed throughout the school to help undecided voters choose.

Mr Paz, our History teacher and organiser said, ìWhilst growing up in America I took part in mock elections and wanted to share these experience with the students. I believe that it is great for kids to become engaged with politics from a young age and a mock election has helped them understand the political process. It was a great atmosphere and really lovely to see the diversity of students voting. It was encouraging to hear a high quality level of debate between students throughout the day. Vote counting took place after school for about an hour and half with Mr King and Mr Rolph scrutinising each ballot sheet. We had results for the First Past the Post system and the more laborious Alternative Vote method. In both methods Conservatives won the mock election.

Broomfield U3A The year has begun well for Broomfield U3A with both an influx of new members and some very interesting speakers. The first speaker, Ian Currie, gave a very amusing and interesting talk on the weather. He provides short and long term weather forecasts to a range of industries including vineyards and appeared on the Channel 4 series Extreme Weather. In February we had another fascinating talk courtesy of John Taylor on bumble bees. He highlighted their role in our lives and the distressing fact that they are declining. In March we had a slideshow on Te Araroa which is a spectacular trail on the North island of New Zealand. This was followed by a talk in April on the history of London through the eighteenth century. Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month (except August) 1.30-3.30 in Broomfield Village Hall. New members are always welcome. Details of future talks can be found on our website at www.u3asites.org.uk/broomfield and in the Village Diary section of this publication.

St Mary’s Church May Fayre The annual Church May Fayre event was held on Sat 16th May on the Church Green of St Mary’s with St Leonard Parish and was a very successful event. This year we had a ‘Roman’ theme with an opportunity to have your photo taken by the church tower (with Roman tiled coins) dressed in Toga’s and Roman attire. There was a Chariot competition, a Roman treasure hunt with prizes and a chance to see the Church’s new history project ‘Brumfelda’ which is studying Roman activity in Broomfield.

and Jujitsu. The newly formed LMC Juniors (kids dance group - ranging from ages 4-12) performed a dance medley - this was their first public performance and they did themselves proud. All the contestants were brilliant and made the show a great success. There were 2 winners, winning trophies, goodie bags and a laurel leaf ‘roman’ headband - Sean Watkins (Beat-boxing) for the ADULTS category and Leah Masters (street dance) for the JUNIORS category.

Activities on the Green this year included a fitness demo by LMC Fitness (Lorna Cotton), followed by the ‘BROOMFIELD’S GOT TALENT’ show / competition where 12 contestants demonstrated talents such as juggling, singing, dancing, baton twirling, a Rugby Hack, beat-boxing, ventriloquism

Thanks are due to all the businesses and organisations who supported us. The event generated a real community atmosphere and was enjoyed by many. Planning has already started for next year’s Event on the 7th May so watch this space!! Sara Clark

1st Broomfield Scout Group Yay! It’s camping season – without all the thermal layers! Having said that, the Scouts did a weekend camp at the beginning of January at Gilwell Park, the home of Scouting today – If you asked the scouts if they had a great time they’d say yes. If you asked the leaders for one word to sum up the camp it would be MUD! It was very muddy and they all came home caked in it – funnily enough they are up for going again next year, talk about scouting endurance! Cubs and Beavers have both done indoor camps at Belchamps, in Hockley. It was equally muddy and cold (not least because the boiler broke on Cub camp!) but that didn’t dampen any spirits – we’re hardy now – not least because our HQ boiler also broke so we all had to contend with wearing extra layers for our weekly meetings until we got it replaced – but we survived. Many of you will also know that we ran our yearly book sale again. This was hugely popular and very well supported – it took a week to set up and about three hours to clear away. Thank you to everyone who donated books, to everyone who put up posters, who posted

flyers through doors, who helped half term week to put out the books, categorised them into sections (that took the best part of two days and 12 people!) went out and about picking up books from homes wanting books collected , to those who made some delicious cakes and cookies to sell with teas and coffees, to those who staffed the sales desk, those that made the teas and coffees and those that stayed behind to help clear up (and it was raining heavily!) A couple of helpers and some of the leaders went above and beyond in their help with this event – Steff, John, Roger, Sue and Linda – a massive thank you! There were others, including some of the Beavers and Cubs who were equally amazing with the time they spent helping and in all weathers. We raised £1594.95 from the book sale which is a phenomenal amount. Thank you to all that supported us, and we still have half a garage of books ready for next year! To celebrate St Georges Day, we had a fabulous parade from our HQ with all sections super

smartly turned out carrying flags up to St Mary’s Church. The Vicar Carolyn, very kindly gave us free rein to have our own St George retelling in Church. I suspect it had never seen the like of it before, with a massive cardboard and cloth dragon in the aisles, to meet with a well armoured St George on his fearless charger, to rescue the Princess from the jaws of the Dragon. The King was very relieved to have his Princess returned to him safe and sound! There was cardboard and tape everywhere… We then all renewed our Scout Promise and Roger gave us a thoughtful talk about how we can use our promise in everyday life. We then paraded back to the scout HQ where a BBQ was waiting for us - yum! As we were all together, or as many as could be from across all sections including adult leaders, we took the opportunity to have a Group photo. As ever my thanks go to the volunteer leader team - without them none of this would be possible.

Derek Johnson Derek Johnson, a well-known Broomfield resident passed away in February of this year at the age of 75. He lived at Scravels for 21 years until 2006 when he moved to Felixstowe. Whilst living in Broomfield, Derek served on the Parish Council for 15 years. He was also active for many years in social and charitable projects and was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2004 for services to business and to the community. Derek was well known within the shipping, freight and logistics sectors as founder and chairman of Johnson Stevens Agencies (now JSA Global), He also received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007 in recognition of more than 50 years’ contribution to the shipping, freight transport and logistics sectors.

He joined United States Lines as an office boy in 1954 at the age of 15, and later worked for SeaLand and American Export Isbrandtsen Lines before setting up Johnson Stevens in 1976. This developed into the leading liner agent in the UK and is credited with helping to make Felixstowe into the UK’s leading container port. Derek’s funeral was held at St Mary’s Broomfield and he is buried in the churchyard. He left 4 children, Michael, Sarah-Ann, Abigail and David, grandchildren, and a wife, Angelica.

In the Bowels of the British Museum Amongst the vast collection of world art and artefacts in the British Museum, lie pieces of Broomfield’s past. Brumfeldans and friends were recently given the rare opportunity to ease past crowds, milling to view the Rosetta Stone, the Elgin Marbles, Egyptian mummies, bypass ‘staff only’ doors and descend flights of stairs into grey corridors flanked by glass cabinets stacked with ancient artefacts. In one such narrow room a white sheet covered a long trestle table. On it lay a rusted, trusted double edged sword, a sword hilt, the fragment of a shield grip, a blue glass vase with ‘self-coloured lattice of trails’, delicately thin stems of gold buckle fragments, an iron lamp with four feet, and a gold edged, cloisonée fragment of a buckle, in-filled with garnet and blue glass. All were found in a ‘barrow’ which dates from the middle Anglo-Saxon period, 550-650 AD, off what is now Main Road, Broomfield. Leaning forward, we nearly head-butted each other, eager to get up close and intimate and engage with these pieces of our village’s history and capture the images mentally and

as photographs. Steve Pollington, author and expert in AngloSaxon history, when talking to Brumfeldans in February, referred to a ‘barrow’ as being a ‘meeting point’ or ‘meeting hall’, and a place where expensive and precious items were placed, as gifts, alongside recently deceased high status nobles. The barrows usually overlooked roads and rivers – he cited Sutton Hoo as another such example – and our site, in overlooking the River Chelmer, is consistent with this concept. Of the British Museum’s vast collections, only a fraction can be on display at any one time. One such artefact is in Room 41. It is the sword scabbard decoration, The Broomfield Jewel, donated by David Christy of Broomfield in 1894. Ref. www.britishmuseum.org accessed through Google. Robin Marchal

Broomfield library

Jack & Jill Pre-School

On a beautiful sunny day in April the library was packed with grandparents, parents, children and babies, and even visitors from outside the county, for our now famous and unique puppet show. Watch this space for the next dates.

Jack and Jill Pre-School, Broomfield Celebrates 35 Years with a Family Festival.

Baby and Toddler rhymetime on Wednesday mornings at 10 is rapidly expanding and all ages enjoy singing, jumping, tickling and joining in with the stories. Our team of Home Library Service ladies do a brilliant job choosing books and chatting to the housebound in the village – if you would like to be part of the library and can’t get out of the house, let us know and we can arrange for a member of the team to contact you. Break a record this summer!

Library volunteers Sue and Carol

All children are called to take up the challenge to sign up to Record Breakers, our Summer Reading Challenge, between 11th July and 5th September. Discover amazing world records as you read your way through your choice of library books, collecting stickers as you go (some are stinky!) to complete your fold-up poster and get a medal and certificate. Who would like to be in the Guinness Book of Records? On Saturday 11th July come into the library to join our attempt to set a Guinness World Records title for the most pledges received to join a reading campaign – see how many pledges Broomfield can contribute and help us set a world record! On Saturday 4th July from 1pm to 3pm at Broomfield Community Centre there will be a special family festival to celebrate 35 years of the Jack and Jill pre-school. The Blue Falcons Gymnastic Display Team will form part of the headline event. Also confirmed so far: • BBQ • Beer tent • Music and dancing • Face painting • Assault course and climbing area • Story tent • Craft areas • Music session by Caterpillar Music • Games and stalls Julie Ellingford, the pre-school leader has worked at Jack and Jill for 21 years and has seen many changes. Jack and Jill pre-school first started as a toddler group in 1979. A pre-school was then formed to meet the needs of the older children. The pre-school has always been run from the Methodist church hall at Broomfield and has always had strong links with the community. It first started with just 10 registered children over the course of 2 mornings. There are now 52 children at the pre-school and sessions are offered over 5 mornings and 3 afternoons with a toddler group running on 1 afternoon. Julie Ellingford, the pre-school leader is available for interviews. For any other information please contact: Cheryl Barry

Village Hall

Broomfield Village Hall We have lots to update you on from recent months, the first being the Bingo night and Indoor boot sale, that took place in March. We were fortunate enough to raise just over £1000 collectively and the proceeds have been put towards the new notice board you will see at the end of Angel Lane. This will display information about future events so keep checking it regularly.

Play in the Park and Tuck shop was a hugely successful event over the Easter Holidays - Broomfield was the Village with the highest attendance across the whole of Chelmsford, nearly triple the amount of most parks!! A big thank you to Broomfield Parish Council for funding and, to all of you who attended. We really hope your children enjoyed themselves and look forward to seeing you over the Summer Holidays each Monday, from 10-12 on the 3rd to 24th August inclusive.

Preparation has begun for the Village Games and Fun day which will take place on Sunday 19th July, from 11.00-14.30, so make a note in your diary as we hope to see you all there!! This year, we will be building on the fun games from last year and hosting a multitude of games for all ages as well as group events in the main arena. There will of course be the usual BBQ, Bar and Bouncy Castle and this year Essex Fire Rescue will be joining us with a Fire Engine for your little ones to explore. We will have a series of craft and bric-a-brac stalls for you to have a browse around with plenty of bargains for you to grab. If you would like to book a craft f find us on Facebook

or bric-a-brac table please contact Kathryn via email hall@broomfieldessex.org. These are just our initial plans - we are still considering more activities for the day so if you have any ideas or suggestions please don’t hesitate to let us know. I’m delighted to announce we will be having Phil’s Inflatable Fun days on the David Smith field over the summer holidays (they used to be at Chelmer High School some years back). They will take place each Thursday from 1-4pm and wristbands will be priced at £5 per child. Come along and let your kids exhaust themselves on the 10 different inflatables - a fun afternoon guaranteed by Phil!! Please don’t forget regular activities run buy the Village Hall Charity. Stay ‘n’ Play - on Monday morning 9.00-11.15am, the Coffee Morning takes place on the first Wednesday of each month from 10.45 to 12.30 and the Tuck Shop in the park each (dry!) Friday from 3.154.15. Moo Music is a great fun and interactive regular music session for 0 to 5 year old babies & children and their parents, grandparents or carers too, where the children sing, dance and play. Music is an essential part of every child’s development and the 100 original Moo Music songs used at the sessions are positive, uplifting, fun and educational. Unfortunately the tennis sessions advertised in our previous magazine are no longer available and coaching will cease with immediate effect. We are trying to find a new coach and will keep you posted if we are successful. Line Dancing Our line dance classes are 1 hour long, every Tuesday from 11am-12noon. We are an absolute beginners class so everybody is welcome, even if you have never tried Line Dancing before. You might have seen us dancing in High Chelmer on Saturday 25th April, we performed a flash mob and surprised shoppers when we all grouped together and performed two of our dances. Our main aim is to have fun with some exercise thrown in. There is a varied age group[ that attends at the moment so if you fancy a go come and join us, we would be pleased to meet you. For more information, contact Susan Dore on 07514 086085. Thursday afternoon is Art Class time A happy group of people meets at 1.30pm each week to try out different techniques and mediums, and learn or improve their artistic skills, in a friendly, supportive environment. The class is open to anyone - those who have

previous experience work alongside those who haven’t picked up a paintbrush since they left school. Each term the class decides what aspects of art they would like to try, so we then have four 3-week themed units, time enough to learn something, but not long enough to get fed up. Already this year we have tried working with coloured pencils, painting the sea and waves, colour theory with perspective, painting landscapes and pen and wash. Anyone who is interested in joining the Art Classes can contact Susan Keeble on 01277 353973, or email me through my website: www.susankeeble-artist.moonfruit.com, where you can find more information about the classes.

Back to Basics We are a small friendly group of ladies who are trying to lose weight without “being on a diet”. We have a weekly weigh in and give each other support, but there is no pressure to follow a particular diet- instead we look at what’s healthy, the nutritional values and what is actually in our food. We try to be more aware of food labels and avoid the misleading low fat, low sugar jargon on much of our food in the supermarket. Our fundamental belief is that by going back to basic foods, by preparing and cooking more of our meals, we will be healthier and shed a few pounds in the process. Help and advice is also available to those needing more guidance. We believe going on a diet makes you hungry and crave the “forbidden foods” so we simply just try to eat healthier and be more aware. Our weekly fee is £3.00 and includes a cuppa, there is no membership or joining fee.
