Welcome to the latest edition of Broomfield Times.
This issue is packed with news of activities that have taken place or will be taking place over the coming months - we hope it will give a sense of what a busy and lively community we live in! On page 8 we have a response to the comments and suggestions received at the Annual Parish Meeting regarding the facilities Parishioners would like to see in the future. See also the Parish Council report (In Council) on page 6 for details of the recently published Strategic Land Availability Assessment by Essex County Council following their “Call for Sites” last year. The web address has links to the various Parish maps where you can view the parcels of land which have been submitted for consideration. Broomfield Parish Council will be consulting on this in due course. The Broomfield Village Games and Fun Day was a huge success – many thanks to all of you who supported it. A report and several photos are on pages 43 to 45. Don’t forget to visit our website and Facebook page for regular news and updates on Parish Council and wider Community events. Selina

Parish Council
In Council Parish Council meetings take place every third Wednesday at 7.30 p.m. in Broomfield Village Hall - members of the public are welcome to attend. There is a ten-minute Public Question Time at the start of the meeting for any questions to be put forward to the Parish Council for consideration. The minutes of all Parish Council meetings can be found on the Broomfield Parish Council website: www.broomfieldessex.org A summary of the main topics discussed at the last three meetings is below, but fuller reports for Civic Amenities and the Village Hall are included separately.
Planning Chelmsford City Council has now published the maps for the sites being considered for development in the period up to 2036. The map of Broomfield sites can be found here:
these sites are under consideration of suitability for development only; as it says on the CCC site, “the submission of a site does not mean that the site will be allocated for development in the Local Plan.”
There is no significance in the different colouring of sites (red, green, blue) - the colouring was just to more easily differentiate between the sites. It is important to stress that
The report containing the full assessment of all sites should be published and considered at the next Essex CC Development Policy Committee meeting (September 2nd). The Parish Council will be consulting on this with local residents - watch our website, facebook pages and noticeboards for further details.

Councillors Two new councillors, Sue Hubble and Charlie Cole, have been welcomed onto the Parish Council. There is still one vacancy, so if anyone is interested in joining the Council please speak to the Parish Clerk (see page 5 for contact details).
Future facilities in the Parish The Parish Council are developing a Strategy on how funding obtained from developers can best be used to improve parishioners’ lives, specifically by providing facilities in the parish’s open spaces for all age groups. Planning contributions have been received from the Saxon Gate, Patching Hall Lane development with further contribution due from Hospital Approach, Broomfield Place and part of the Hollow Lane/North of Copperfield Road developments. There will be around £80k in funds available to take the Strategy forward. In due course, an Overarching Strategy Document of all the projects being considered will be produced. Feedback and comments from the Annual Parish Meeting have been fully considered with a response provided on page 8. There will be around £80k available after the loan to pay for the Village Hall rebuilding has been paid to take the Strategy forward.
Traffic and road safety The north and south Village Gateways are still awaiting final designs. There is a budget of £5k for each Gateway. There was no report forthcoming on two other schemes which had been put forward by the Parish Council to the Local Highways Panel: widening of the footpath outside Little Orchards; and extension of the 30 mph from Butlers Close to Hospital Approach.
Communications We have made several changes to the Broomfield Parish Council website to improve and enhance it further. Please send any feedback to Peter Carter (cllrcarter@broomfieldessex.org ) so that we can continue to make the site as relevant and useful as possible.

Action Plan Update from Annual Parish Meeting 2015 Further to the Annual Parish Meeting held in April, various committees have been working through requests from parishioners. Some ideas have now been actioned; picnic benches have been purchased and are already on Angel Meadow ready for the Summer. The Civic Amenities Committee have planted flowers on Parsonage Green and other areas are being considered that could be enhanced by planting with flowers. Requests for benches around the village is under review, but will not be actioned before consulting with local residents who may be affected. Developing teenage facilities on the David Smith Field was hugely popular, but neighbouring residents had concerns. Strong support was given to the proposal to keep this area a multiple-use open space, which must also be taken into account. Both the skate park and adventure cycle track were popular. As there were more opposing views concerning the skate park, the Parish Council have decided to pursue the adventure cycle track at this time. They are currently researching costs and designs for something that will be suitable for everyone including the disabled and young. Where to relocate the kick wall will be considered alongside other recreational facilities in David Smith Field. Several requests for a fish pond were received and we would welcome views on the potential locations.

There were 50 requests for a table tennis table. This is under consideration; comments about windy conditions and poor English weather have been noted. A trial Broomfield Table Tennis fun day is a possible scoping exercise before any investment is made. The Parish Council are responding to the many requests for a youth club. For more information, please see page 13. Another area of concern highlighted at the meeting was for safer cycling in Broomfield. This is a complex issue, due to constraints such as road width and roadside parking, but is being actively considered. The planning committee oversees cycleways on new developments and are busy securing a route from the hospital, past Chelmer Valley School and onto Goulton Road. The crossing at Eric Avenue is still under review with ECC Highways - you may have noticed equipment that measures the traffic flow. Highways felt the crossing had insufficient pedestrian use and traffic to convert it to a pelican crossing. BPC have disputed this, stating that traffic is consistent with the controlled crossing at Angel Green and few parishioners cross at Eric Avenue because they consider it unsafe. BPC have asked for the crossing to be relocated slightly further south, away from a busy junction. Wendy Daden

Presentations to Retiring Councillors In May, a dinner was held at Channels Golf Club, at which Members made presentations in honour of long-serving councillors who retired that month from the Council. It was also an opportunity to recognise the dedicated work of the Parish Council staff and to thank them for all their hard work. Les Steed, who was a councillor for 39 years, and Jean Wrenn, who served for 28 years, were presented with glass plaques engraved with the Parish Council insignia as tokens of their illustrious terms of office. Gerry Cockram, who served for a four year term as Chairman of the Finance and General Purposes committee, was presented with a certificate and an engraved pen. Fellow councillors treated staff and retiring members to the meal to show their appreciation. Jean Wren (right) and Les Steed (below right) being presented with glass plaques by Councillor Smith. County Council
From the County Council Waste Plan Producing a Waste Local Plan is a national requirement. Essex County Council and Southend-on-Sea Borough Council aim to find innovative ways of moving away from the traditional approach of sending waste to landfill for the 15 years up to 2032. The Plan, which has just finished its public consultation, is looking at the provisions for all waste to make sure that the County is providing the best possible facilities to enable recycling to reduce the impact on the environment and on our community. Once adopted, the Plan will allocate specific sites considered suitable for waste facilities to manage future waste development and ensure that we recycle as much as we can to lessen the impact on our communities. If you would like further information, the Plan can be found online www.consult.essexcc.gov.uk or paper copies can be reviewed at County Hall and Chelmsford City Council offices. To view more detail on the methodology for the preferred 28 sites and the individual sites assessments, please go to www.essex.gov.uk/WLP
Devolution The current opportunity offered by central government for Local Authorities to seek devolution of powers is one Essex cannot afford to ignore. The County Council is working alongside other local council partners and central government to make devolution a reality for the Greater Essex area. The Chancellor of the Exchequer has indicated that this is only the start of English devolution, and has already announced further powers to a number of northern cities, and, significantly,
plans for the first county deal for Cornwall are being finalised. We believe that Whitehall has at last realised that local decisions are best made locally, and as a big place with big ambitions the prize on the table for Greater Essex is a once in a lifetime opportunity to take more control of local decisions, unlock economic growth, and revitalise our democracy. It is worth noting that this isn’t about the County Council: it is about all councils within Essex collectively having a greater say over the issues that matter to all Essex residents. This should lead to faster economic growth, more jobs, higher wages, more homes, better infrastructure, improved healthcare and public services.
Essex Sound & Video Archive “You Are Hear” Project A project to digitise and catalogue many of the historically significant sound and video recordings in the Essex Sound and Video Archive has secured a grant of £276,800 from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The project, run by the Essex Record Office, will work with community groups in villages and towns throughout Essex, helping them to reflect upon where they live by engaging with the recordings. These will be placed on “sonic benches” in every corner of the County - on village greens, by the seaside, or in a shopping district, where at the press of a button anyone will be able to listen to recordings from the past tell the story of where they are sitting. In addition, the recordings will be posted online for all to freely enjoy without having to travel to the Essex Record Office in Chelmsford to hear them. Youth Council Election 1st October The possibility of a Broomfield Youth Council is under discussion and any residents aged between 13 and 19 years old are asked to register their interest at the Parish Council office to get involved in an election for members scheduled for 1st October. The youth council will organise events for teenagers and have an input into discussions on future facilities within Broomfield. Civic Amenities Report Centenary Wood
5 Greens
Maintenance work is carried out by the Village Volunteers to make sure that the pathways through the shrubs are kept clear and the grassed area is suitable for informal recreation. The new wild flower beds have given us a very colourful display this year. Two new tree-trunk benches were delivered in July.
The shows of daffodils on Parsonage Green, snowdrops on Parsonage Green and crocuses on both Angel Green and Church Green has been really pleasing this year. A small flower bed has been made on Scots Green and the display of poppies has been remarkably colourful.
REMEMBER: Centenary Wood is located at the bottom of the playing field outside the Village Hall; it can be reached by walking down Angel Lane or by walking down the David Smith field and going through the opening in the hedge.
Parish Pathways Partnership (P3) The group of P3 volunteers has tackled a number of cutting back tasks to keep our public footpaths clear and easy to use. For example, we cut down some overhanging branches obstructing the public footpath by Mill Lane.

Great News for Broomfield Times Three 2014 editions of Broomfield Times were entered for the Essex Life Community Magazine Awards, organised by the Community Council of Essex. We were selected from the 40 entries as one of the fourteen finalists and invited to the Special Awards Evening at the new Grey Friars Hotel in Colchester. We were just beaten to it by Galleywood in 3rd place, Ambo 2nd and Thaxted 1st. The magazines all vary in size and frequency and are not all run by the Parish/Town Councils.

Broomfield Cottage Gardeners’ Society The Summer Show took place on 12th July in the Village Hall. Cricket Club News Parish Council Grant Thanks to a generous donation from the Parish Council, the Club has recently taken delivery of a new mobile cricket net which is already improving the quality of the training sessions. Pictured is Club President, Mr John Latham, receiving the cheque from the Parish Council’s Vice Chairman, Mr Geof Garwood, along with some of the Juniors.
Though it may seem early to start planning, new adult and junior members for next season are always welcome. Please contact me if you are interested. Tony Cowell Club Chairman tony.cowell1@btinternet.com www.broomfieldcc.hitssports.com
This season, the Junior under-9, -11 and -13-year-olds have enjoyed their Friday evening training sessions, supported by their parents who have in turn enjoyed watching, socialising and supporting the bar! The Juniors have taken part in Kwik Cricket festivals, friendly matches and the under-11s in league matches, winning one and having several close finishes. Winter Indoor training will commence in January please keep an eye on the website or contact me nearer the time for more details. The Senior Saturday sides have meanwhile had respectable campaigns in divisions 3 & 9 of the T. Rippon Mid Essex League, with promotion remaining elusive but both teams broadly winning as many as they lost.

Football Club Members of Broomfield F.C. travelled out to our friends in Werlte in Germany at the end of May for what was the first exchange without Jim Ford. Many of Jim’s close family made the trip, including his wife Pam Ford, to honour his memory. The exchange programme was full of all ages and as in past years, new people were involved from the youth and adult members of our club. They all enjoyed this week of fun and culture, which we believe is the longest running football exchange in Europe. In early June, the club held a training day to recruit new players for the youth section - this www.broomfieldessex.org
proved to be very successful for many squads. Broomfield Fun Day was held at the end of June and again I would like to thank the many volunteers for all their help, both in the week leading up to and over the weekend. The club is very proud of this event and many entrants back this up with praise for the organisation and enthusiastic stall holders. Only two Broomfield teams reached the finals; a team from our under-9 age group and the senior men’s team. Sadly, both lost in the final. I would like to wish all managers and players a very successful season ahead. Sean McGinley

Bus Update
Broomfield U3A is now well into its third year. It is an organisation for people no longer in full time employment, providing educational, creative and leisure pursuits in a friendly environment. Apart from regular monthly meetings, we have a number of groups including canasta, book group, art, history and a luncheon group to name a few.
As you may recall, Essex County Council carried out a countywide consultation over the spring to allow people to tell them what aspects of the bus network they valued and where areas for improvement might be. This consultation closed on 31st March and the results of the consultation can be found at www.essex.gov.uk/busreview
We have already had some very interesting speakers this year, with the following ones to look forward to: Treasure Beneath My Feet Gordon Bailey Sept 9th My Life In Ladies Underwear Terry Tabor Oct 14th Life In The Undergrowth Roger Hence Nov 11th Xmas Entertainment Jan and Friends Dec 9th Then, to start off the New Year we have Mark Stacy from BBC’s Flog It who will be giving a talk on antiques. Our meetings are held every second Weds of each month (with the exception of August) from 1.30-3.30 pm in the Broomfield Village Hall. New members are always made welcome. Full details of everything connected to the U3A can be found on our website www.u3a.uk/broomfield
From Sunday 5th July 2015, there have been some minor changes to Service 42/42A Galleywood to Broomfield Hospital and Stansted Airport (42A) via Chelmsford city centre. The main change to this service concerns the adjustment of running times during the school peak periods, particularly during the 1500 to 1600 period, during which traffic has worsened considerably of late. Most off-peak journeys have been re-timed to some degree. The off-peak hourly extensions to Warners Farm have been removed. Journeys from Stansted Airport have an increased layover at Broomfield Hospital on certain journeys to provide more time to pick up customers at this stop. A number of adjustments to the morning peak times and immediate post peak period around 0900 have also been made.

Community Speedwatch The Broomfield Community Speed Watch has, for some time, sought to use more than the single site on Main Road for our speed checking activities. Any site we use has to meet several criteria, the two most important being that it is safe for those undertaking the speed check and that it is approved by the Police. Through discussions with villagers, we had received proposals for four sites where it was felt that the traffic speeds were often inappropriate and at the end of February we visited these sites, accompanied by a Police Sergeant from the Casualty Reduction Section of Essex police. The sites and the outcomes are listed below. •Berwick Avenue This is a quiet residential road and is not a through road. During the period we were there no moving traffic was seen and it was not considered necessary to have a speed watch site here.
•Mill Lane This is also a quiet residential road and is not a through road. During the period we were there, no moving traffic was seen and it was not considered necessary to have a speed watch site here.
•Main Road, southbound The exact speed watch site would be at Rutherfords monitoring traffic as it passes Butlers Close and south towards the Kings Arms. This site was rejected
as it is too difficult to determine if the vehicle is within the 40mph or 30mph limit at the point of measurement and, although they are not happy about it, the Police accept that many vehicles will pass the 30mph sign a few miles per hour in excess of the limit.
•School Lane The site is opposite the Primary School. This is a through road with a reasonable length of straight either side of the measuring point, enabling speeds to be checked in both directions. This site is accepted and is now one of our official speed watch points. It is noticeable that whenever we carry out a speed watch, the traffic is almost entirely travelling within the speed limit and the number of vehicles that have to be reported to the Police for further action is extremely small. We can, therefore, make a useful contribution to controlling speeds within the village but only when we are actually using the speed gun. We can conduct speed watches whenever we wish throughout daylight hours, but at the moment we do not have enough operators to maintain anything other than a very infrequent presence on the roads. Although we hear many complaints of speeding in the village, we do need more volunteers to operate the Community Speed Watch if we are to make any real impact. Contact the Parish Office to join our team Chris Gardiner
Left: Looking eastwards from the approved site so the speed would be measured as the vehicle approaches the primary school and the zebra crossing; and right: a view of the approved site at the end of the road to the telephone exchange with the Police sergeant making the site assessment with his speed gun. f find us on Facebook

1st Broomfield Scout Group 1st Broomfield Scout Group have recently managed to purchase the land on which their scout headquarters building is situated from Chelmsford City Council. To mark the event the scouts turned “Masterchefs” for the evening and cooked a celebratory three-course dinner for the various grant donors and project supporters. Councillor Wendy Daden was one of the guests, representing the Parish Council, who donated the sum of £1,150 to help towards the purchase. She thoroughly enjoyed the evening and was particularly impressed by the standard of cooking. The Scouts made everything for the meal, including the ice cream and bread!
Broomfield scouts originally met in an ex-WWII wooden hut on some disused allotments in the village, later building a new headquarters on the same land. Now, with help from the Community Initiatives Fund, Broomfield Parish Council, the Essex Community Foundation, Essex County Scouts and individual donors, they not only own the building, but also the land on which it sits. This now secures their position into the future. For further information contact Roger Cole thecolefamily@btinternet.com

Obituary
Derek Cox (1929-2015) Derek Cox served as a Scout leader in Broomfield for almost 60 years and during this time over 2,000 Scouts have been fortunate to come under his care and guidance. Derek was born on St George’s Day (the patron saint of Scouts) in April 1929 in Butlers Cottages, Broomfield attending the local Primary School and from there going to Chelmsford Technical High School. When he was 12 he joined the Broomfield Scouts and later helped to run the Scout troop owing to the shortage of leaders just after the war. In 1948 at age 18 Derek took out his first leader warrant as an Assistant Scout Master. He left school in 1945 and started an apprenticeship with Marconi as an electrician. Whilst he worked at New Street he used to cycle home for lunch and on one occasion he caught the stitching of his trousers in the bike chain, resulting in his trouser seams unravelling and a rather embarrassing incident! In the late 1940s Derek attended the YMCA Red Triangle Club in School Lane Broomfield and it was here that he met his future wife Joan. Derek and Joan were married in Broomfield church in 1950 whilst Derek was still doing his National Service in the RAF. It was in 1961 when their son Graham joined the cubs that Derek re-connected with the Broomfield Scout Group taking on the role of Scout Master whilst Joan took on the role of Secretary of the Scout Group.

It was during their time with the Scout group that sufficient funds were raised to build a new Scout headquarters to replace the old wooden Scout hut. Not content with serving the community through his Scouting activities, Derek became a Broomfield Parish Councillor and was also on the committee of the British Legion. It was in recognition of his service to the community that Derek was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1985. After he retired Derek still continued actively supporting Scouting though his membership of the Chelmsford Scout Fellowship and was a Vice President of Chelmsford District Scouts. In 2001 he was awarded the Silver Acorn for specially distinguished service to the Scout movement. Derek lost his wife Joan in 2003 and is survived by their 3 children, Graham, Denise and Tracy, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Derek is remembered as a very kind, caring, man, always putting others before himself and willing to help those in need. The very essence of a true Scout. Roger Cole

St Mary’s Church Appeal In the early summer, I looked out of the Vicarage window one morning to see that the cross on top of the hall ventilator had finally collapsed, due in part to the original design, partly due to being vulnerable to storm and wind damage; and partly (or largely in my opinion) due to the weight of the wood pigeons which land regularly and at considerable speed on it! I observed this with much distress. Our village church is beautiful, and it has suffered much damage over the last couple of years. The round tower has extensive woodpecker damage, the Lady Chapel is infested with bees, and the wind-vane which was taken down the last time the spire was repaired is still waiting to be restored and replaced when the repair of the tower roof is undertaken. This is an ancient building, Grade 2* listed, and has features from virtually every era since it was built in the eleventh century. We are fortunate to have access to such a well maintained and beautiful place in our midst, but due to its age it is vulnerable to both the elements and local wildlife. It is also incredibly expensive to maintain to the standard which it deserves. Just the repair to the cross in the picture above will cost more than £2,000. Other repair costs which the church will face are estimated as follows: • Repair of the damaged shingles and replacement of the weather vane £10,000 • Repair of the organ leathers £30,000 • Replacement of the whole tower roof with woodpecker proof shingles (due in 2020) £100,000 The church will be looking for substantial funding from charitable organisations towards the costs of these repairs. However most of the cost falls to the people of the parish and f find us on Facebook
the fundraising efforts of the church. The regular running and maintenance costs of the churchyard and church buildings run in the region of £80,000 per annum, and are met by the worshipping community. We do also need support from the people of the Village of Broomfield to ensure the survival of this building where so many special events in the lives of the people who have, do and will live here take place. Christenings, weddings and funerals are such important events in the lives of the people, and the Church is always there to provide a special environment for them. Many of you will also enjoy attending our regular worship here at St. Mary’s, or perhaps you like to come along to worship at Harvest Festival, Remembrance Sunday or Christmas. We also use our building and grounds to host many community events. From the beginning of August we will aim to keep the church open during some weekday mornings so that people can come in to enjoy the historic building, to have somewhere quiet to reflect on life or pray, or maybe just to have a little space to experience God. Please do come along - you will be made most welcome. During the weekend of 11th-13th of September we are holding our annual Gift Weekend. This is an opportunity for the people of the village to support the church financially, so do please come along during the times listed in the calendar, and please be generous, so that future generations can enjoy the privilege of a beautifully, well maintained church in the village for special occasions and everyday visits. Methodist Minister Greetings, my name is Abe KonaduYiadom and from September 2015, I will be the Probationer Presbyter (Minister) for Moulsham Lodge and Broomfield Methodist Churches. A Ghanaian-British, I migrated to Britain in the 1980s in my mid-teens. After completing my GCSEs, I trained and qualified as a Chef, working briefly at the House of Commons. In 1990, I moved on to pursue a career in the voluntary sector and statutory sectors, working with various organisations, including Diabetes UK, the Dystonia Society; a charity supporting people with neurological injury and the Citizens Advice Bureau. In 2004, I joined Wesley’s Chapel, ‘Mother Church of Methodism’ in London as Lay Worker, and Do You Like Making Things? Would you like to make and look after this bear?

Brumfelda “Integrated with GPS, the magnetometer is ‘highly sensitive’, offers ‘absolute accuracy’ in its probing and recording of data in the ‘subsurface exploration’ of magnetic fields.” Thank you GEM for this information. www.gemsys.ca
Tim Dennis was so equipped in Dragonsfoot in March, 2015, marching in strict rhythm up and down a series of defined 10 metre squares. Roman tile, grey-ware, green glass, coins and other artefacts had earlier been found and recorded, but what precisely was left of any building beneath the earth? Builders of St Mary’s Church, Broomfield, had, over the centuries appropriated tile (tile = brick) - see the south facing wall - and perhaps there was little left! Twenty-four hours later we had an electronic

All in an area approximately 15 metres square and within six feet of the surface! With the kind permission of the owner, Brumfeldans and friends will expand their walking across Dragonsfoot this summer. Exciting times ahead. If you would like to take part or get further information about Brumfelda and its activities, please email: brumfelda@gmail.com or refer to Broomfield Parish Council’s website. Library Lots of excited Broomfield schoolchildren and their proud parents filled the library on Saturday 11th July at the prize giving for the winners of the book review competition. Over 75 entrants gave library staff the very difficult job of choosing winners from a very impressive set of reviews. Congratulations to everyone for their amazing creativity and lots of hard work and thanks to Broomfield Parish Council for providing the book token prizes. The same day saw almost 80 people join our attempt to set a Guinness World Record – children promised to read and parents and grandparents pledged to encourage children to read over the summer - we’ll let you know if our attempt (along with lots of others!) was successful. All this marked the start of our summer challenge, “Record Breakers”. Lots of fun, exciting apps and proud medal winners. Do you know the size of the world’s largest pizza? Ask any child who joined the challenge and maybe find out some more amazing world records. Special thanks too to our nine young volunteers who gave up time during their summer holidays to help enrol children, chat to them about their books and give out stickers and medals - we couldn’t do it without you. Cycle for Life 2015 ‘Cycle for Life 2015’ for Farleigh Hospice launches with new location Anglia Ruskin University Campus in Chelmsford Farleigh Hospice is delighted to announce that registration for this year’s ‘Cycle for Life’ is now open! This year’s event will take place on Sunday 13th September and, due to the growing number of participants, will have a new location at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) in Chelmsford. So whether you’re an experienced cyclist, or a younger/beginner cyclist with a family friendly 20km, a challenging 50km or a sportive 100km, there is a route to suit everyone. With early registration fees of £10 per adult and £5 for children under 16, it’s pocket friendly too! Everybody who registers will receive an event pack (inclusive of sponsorship forms, event guide and event T-shirt), certificates and drinks and snacks along the route. This year, limited edition ‘Team Farleigh’ cycling jerseys will be
available to purchase for an additional cost. Registering couldn’t be easier either, simply visit www.farleighhospice.org/ cycleforlife to register online, call the events team on 01245 457408, or email events@ farleighhospice.org. Last year 814 people took part in the event and between them they raised over £50,000 in sponsorship! Since then, this money has been used to fund the essential care and support which Farleigh Hospice provides to people affected by life limiting illnesses and has made a massive difference to so many local families. This year, with our new venue, we’re hoping that more people than ever before will get on their bikes and ‘Cycle for Life for Farleigh Hospice’ on Sunday 13th September!”
Representatives from Farleigh Hospice, MacIntyre Hudson and ARU gather to celebrate the launch of the event and the new start point with Ruskin the Rhino! f find us on Facebook

Broomfield Then & Now History of Broomfield Scouts & Church Hall
Site of the Old Church Hall close to Deverill Close, Main Road The “old” Church Hall on Main Road (approximately at the entrance of Deverill Close now) was the meeting place for many local organisations, including 1st Broomfield Scout Group - or as it was then called, 1st Broomfield (St. Mary’s) Scout Group. This latter name was because the group had been restarted with the support of the church in 1938 after having been in abeyance for more than 10 years. Members of St. Mary’s church formed the leader team and initially boys wishing to be Cubs or Scouts had to attend the church, though this condition was later relaxed. The Scouts continued to hold their
The inscription says: This foundation stone formed part of the building which stood here from 1873-1998 the building was last used as St Mary’s Church Hall regular Scout and Cub meetings and fundraising jumble sales etc. in the church hall until 1950 when they moved to the scout hut, an ex-army wooden building erected on disused allotments off School Lane. The Guides and Brownies continued to meet in the church hall until it was knocked down in 1998. They then relocated to the “new” scout headquarters which had been built in 1973. In 2015 the Scout group raised the funding to purchase the freehold of their Scout headquarters, thus ensuring their security of tenure into the future.
Broomfield Afternoon WI There are more goodies on the horizon with Broomfield Afternoon WI. In September we hear about Living with the Inuit, as one of our members recalls how she spent eight days in the 1970s on an Inuit settlement in Canada’s North-West Territories. Stop smoking - for good! We can help people to stop smoking - for good. It is well known that giving up smoking is good for your physical health but new research suggests that, far from being a stress-reliever, smoking increases the risk of anxiety and depression. It’s hard to give up on your own but the free NHS stop smoking service which covers mid Essex has the knowledge and tools to help people living in this area to quit the smoking habit - for good. It is run by Provide, a social enterprise, and its Stop Smoking Team has helped loads of people to quit over the years It isn’t easy to quit, but we can help you every step of the way and you are far more likely to be successful with our help. Just give us a ring, we look forward to hearing from you. Retreat and Restore The word ‘retreat’ is defined as ‘The act of moving back, especially from something hazardous’; and ‘The process of changing one’s thinking’. Life can be hazardous - challenges occur, we get stuck in our thinking, feeling incapable of changing our circumstances. A yoga retreat helps us to re-evaluate, restore and recuperate during our busy, hazardous lives. More than a holiday, retreats allow you to develop a new sense of yourself and what’s important in
your life. Retreats are a deeply transforming experience that help you to change your perspective on life’s difficulties and even discover solutions. Peace, strength, serenity, renewed vigour and better health are just some of the souvenirs that you’ll bring home... For more details of the ‘Joy’ weekend yoga retreat (30th Oct - 1st Nov) in Canterbury, or to learn about colours and their effect on our lives at my 6th September Broomfield workshop, email susie@beyondsoundyoga.co.uk.

Broomfield Village Hall This summer has seen many activities at the Village Hall. Not only did we host our annual Village Games and Fun Day, we’ve also been host to many other organisations who have celebrated special events. Jack and Jill Pre-school celebrated their 30th Anniversary in July - congratulations to them! A special Charity Bike riding event, with riders participating in a sponsored 15 and 60 mile ride started and finished at the Village Hall. Support for Sight also hosted a family fun day at the end of July which a huge success. The Charity are very pleased to be the chosen venue for such worthy causes. As for our Village Games, we were delighted that the weather was on our side, the event was well attended and we raised a superb £1,200. We plan to use this to improve our current hearing loop system and some will also go towards the installation of a catering dishwasher. A lot of time and effort was put into the organisation of the Games and we are very grateful to everyone
Footgolf who donated their time to help out on the day and behind the scenes. A big thanks to all our sponsors, particularly those who made the Footgolf happen - Charles David Casson, Broomfield Football Club and Grays Farm and Suzuki on Main Road for donating the use of a Suzuki Swift for two days, won by Kieren Reynolds for scoring a hole in one. Other winners of the Footgolf were Jack Hawkins, p

It was lovely to see so many people milling around the fields, with smiles on their faces and enjoying all the different activities. We plan to continue with this event annually and hope to make it bigger and better each year. As always if you have any suggestions or feel you would like to join our committee for the Village Games event, please don’t hesitate to contact us at the Parish Office. Whilst a lot of our regular hirers took a break during the summer, we have been fortunate to arrange other events. The YMCA ran two free sessions in the park where children had the opportunity to participate in many activities such as football zorbing, free running and music workshops. Phil’s Inflatable Thursdays provided children from age 2 to 11 with plenty of fun with not just the usual inflatables, but laser tag, the eliminator, wrecking ball, disco competitions and much more.
